TL;DR Yes, you can kill Reaper Leviathans in Subnautica, but they generally do not respawn unless there are bugs or changes to the game version. Killing them can diminish the game's intended experience of survival and exploration.
Respawning Mechanics
Reaper Leviathans, once killed, do not typically respawn, as confirmed by multiple players [1:1]
[3:5]. However, some users have reported instances where creatures appeared to respawn due to game bugs or after deleting map cache files
[1:7]. Ghost Leviathans at the crater's edge are known to respawn
[3:4].
Methods to Kill Leviathans
Killing a Reaper Leviathan can be achieved using various tools such as the Stasis Rifle combined with a Thermoblade or Prawn Suit equipped with a drill arm [3:3]
[2:9]. It requires patience and persistence, as it can take hundreds of hits
[2:10]. While some players enjoy the challenge, others find it tedious and prefer avoiding these creatures
[2:7].
Game Experience and Strategy
The presence of Leviathans adds an element of terror and excitement to the game. Many players argue that killing them diminishes this aspect and recommend using stealth and evasion tactics instead [3:1]
[4:2]. The game was designed to emphasize exploration and survival without necessarily engaging in combat
[1:8].
Alternative Play Styles
While the game encourages non-combative strategies, players are free to approach it differently. Some enjoy the thrill of hunting Leviathans, making it part of their gameplay [4:6]
[5:1]. This emergent gameplay allows for personalization, although it might not align with the game's original design intentions
[4:2].
In conclusion, while killing Reaper Leviathans is possible and sometimes necessary for certain play styles, it's important to consider how it affects your overall experience and enjoyment of Subnautica.
some say they respawn some say they don’t so i don’t want to get my blood pressure up and my time wasted
They won’t respawn assuming no bugs happen. I think the respawning was mostly due to changing versions when SubNautica was still in development.
Same thing happens if you delete your map cache. Nodes, capsule spawns, and flora/fauna respawn at their spawn points (assigned or otherwise) upon reloading the file and the rebuilding of a new cache file.
I mean the game generally doesn't want you to kill things. There used to be a special knife that did more damage, and they removed it since it didn't fit with the general paradigm they were going for. So unless you're so anxious you literally can't finish the game otherwise, try to make it past using the other tools available. You can play however you want, but being stealthy and careful is genuinely how the game was meant to be played.
Me after killing every leviathan in the game :
i generally dont find them scary anymore i just find them annoying more than anything else. ones behind the aurora dont matter, ones on the dunes and the mountains annoy me because i keep getting in their aggro zone on accident
Time to install DeathRun I guess
The 'hardened blade' knife? I think it does less damage than the thermoblade. It was removed because it was supposed to be tied to a 'durability' system that got removed.
Oh, really? I'm dumb, I thought it was higher damage. Larger point still stands.
They don't respawn. Unless you are building in their territory and you really don't want to deal with them it's not worth it imo.
Some people deliberately leave them alive so they can build leviathan viewing stations into their bases.
I do this!! It's cool to see them.
Saamee i have one in the dunes with two observation bubbles. Theres a reaper that circles it, it's so cool. Also have one in the lava lakes right next to the entrance to the aquarium to observe the sea dragon.
I don't for the same reason I wouldn't hunt a lion on the savannah. Sure, it might try to eat me, but it's just being a lion and I'm in its territory. I can't fault the reapers for acting like reapers, but I can use my wits, skills, and tools to remove myself from the food chain.
The title
It’s not worth to kill them unfortunately :/ Since they respawn and you don’t get any praise/achievement/reward
I killed every Ghost Leviathan and Crab Squid in the Lost Ravine. They never respawnrd for the rest of that file's life, all the way to the end of the game.
Do resources respawn on your file? If they do, that is (to my understanding) a reportable bug. Things should only be respawning if the resource file is missing or damaged.
I don’t think they are. I’ve never noticed any resource re-spawning. But I know I’ve read somewhere that they do respawn. Ah found it
I know it’s silly to believe a steam thread, but I never bothered to test it on my own. I searched for it, considering killing the reaper at Aurora so I can search it in peace.
Yeah but you can say I knifed a reaper to death
Yep, with a stasis rifle and a will of iron.
Do you recommend this on hardcore mode?
Also are ghosts similar? (Although it seems like you have to hit ghosts in the mouth for the stasis rifle to do anything)
Never in Hardcore. Avoid all leviathans like they’re the plague.
With enough first aid kits and a big ol' set of brass cajones you can but it's a cross between an epic underwater battle and a snorefest. I wouldn't bother myself. You'll likely only ever do it once.
yes, takes a while, couple of hundreds stabs, dunno the exact number (200-300?)
Yes, but you have to be willing to die to do so.
It's a fairly common pastime among the veteran users on the sub.
Just got my Stasis Rifle and the Thermoblade, I'm ready to kill those bastards, but I have some questions...
First, there's people on internet saying that they respawn after a while and people also saying that they don't respawn at all. I'm confused because I want to explore freely without worrying about those guys, but I'm not sure if that's how this game works.
And what about other Leviathans, like Ghost and Sea Dragon? I know they're killable, but, again, I don't know if I'm supposed to kill or avoid them.
Any tips on this subject? Which is best: to fight or to run?
Thanks in advance, this sub is really helpful!
What happens if they die is that they start glitching out. So I'm pretty sure you're supposed to avoid them/run away from them/run past them. I have never personally noticed a leviathan of any kind respawn after killing it, but I wasnt really counting or paying enough attention. Also, prawn suit with grapple arm and drill/hand arm is a lot safer/faster way of killing them, if you know how to do it right.
Depends on where in the game you are. Once you have a prawn suit and a drill arm, kill them. It's not hard at all. You can do it with a thermoblade but it takes a long time and it's easier to just avoid them, but once you can hang on the side of a leviathan's head and drill through their skull, it's pretty simple.
Thanks for the tips. I saw a guy on youtube putting down a Sea Dragon with the Prawn Suit (which I don't have yet), it took about 20 minutes. It doesn't look hard, only a bit slow to do it.
They have a ton of HP but it can be done. The only ones that you can't really kill are the Ghost Leviathans because they'll just respawn when you get close to the void. Otherwise, dead is dead. It's up to you how you play the game.
I kill every one I see.
And they're gone forever?
No, Reapers do not respawn, however killing them diminishes some of the scariness and fun of the game, so i wouldn't recommend it until you complete at least one playthrough.
If you kill them it kinda ruins the experience, you feel overpowered and the game and every further play through suddenly becomes boring
The main reason they're there is to add an aspect of terror in the game. They really aren't meant to be killed but they are killable. the only leviathans that do respawn are the ones in crater's edge
I agree - I am of the opinion that the game is more fun when it's about evading/eluding dangerous fauna rather than fighting and killing it. It does seem like the intended way to play the game.
With that being said, the people here saying "you're not supposed to play the game like that" and downvoting anyone who says they kill leviathans, should stop. It's a game. Some people's favorite part of games is to break out of the intended way of playing. It's called emergent gameplay. I might not always understand it, but I'm not going to criticize someone for playing their single player game the way they want to. Let people have their fun.
ye cuz i finished the game multiple times modded and vanilla so it gets kinda boring but having a 1 on 1 battle against a reaper or smth is always fun not to mention just breaking thier ankles near the surface to make them gain the ability to fly
Didn't even know you could kill them lol
No Leviathans being left on the map is literally the opposite of fun
Have you tried using the prawn and drilling them to death, could be a fun ride while grappling onto a leviathan
I kill the ghostie at the lost river entrance. In my first playthrough it was a major bother getting the cyclops through with him there, never again. The drill arm is handy to keep him from biting while you use the other arm to punch his blue face. I end up going through several waters and fish plus a full repair tool battery, but it's doable just standing in the open in the prawn suit.
Ah nice dude, i killed the lower dragon using drill arm and grapling arm with prawn. Since that day I stopped using the stasis rifle entirely. (I got better way)
Amen. The leviathan joyride is the best way
I fought the sea dragon for 30 mins and gave up. We were at an impasse so I just left
They can respawn
yeah, first playtrough I killed a few, second, zero
The lower dragon was actually the first leviathan I killed. It blew up one of my thermal plants any I took it personally. So I hopped in my Prawn and went spine-mining
Kill the other 21 Reapers.
Could be a good idea! Like killing 1 a day. I will try that
Oi, you stole my idea, now imma have to beat you to it.
Good luck to you mate! I only have the sea dragon left. I got the ghost now too.
Welp good luck with that. Im doing a hardcore run, and I havent gotten prawn yet. So youll prob beat me.
How tf did you get the ghost??
Ghost leviathan
I got you!
Followed by the Sea dragon ;) while you're at it that is.. En route, so to speak
A cuddlefish. Bet you can't do that they're too cute!
Holy. That might be too hard. I might have to give up on that. That seems impossible!
Sea dragon
Hydrogen bomb versus coughing baby kind of situation tbh
That reaper stands no chance
If you ever see me fighting in the ocean with a Reaper Leviathan. HELP THE LEVIATHAN
Multi-player Subnautica with friendly fire enabled.
Absolutely nothing. A 55 m large creature is going to be showing zero interest in me. Chasing me is a waste of energy for him.
He will go for the oceanic sharks, rays, dolphins and other similar creatures he has a taste for.
Would be a crime to harm him anyways. A 55 m larhe carnivore is practically impossible. There is not enough for the creature to appropriately sustain itself, so I am just going to be enjoying the sight until it eventually goes extinct.
At some point, a creature is soo large it invokes no fear at all.
The ocean would have to be extremely productive to support 55 m long hyperpredators. Considering how clear the water is, the subnautica ocean clearly isn't extremely productive.
The protagonist of Subnautica is just as small as you are and is of great interest to the reaper leviathan
That is because it is a gameplay necessity.
When was the last time you heard even a large whale wasting time on a human?
You forget that whales eat krill, which are orders of magnitude smaller than them. Fish are commonly know to eat tiny prey when its an easy meal. I catch 2lb largemouth on 1/64oz jigs every so often. If the reaper is hungry the reapers gonna eat.
Whales eat krill by the millions. They do not chase down singular krill, nor could they. Do you not understand math or something? Reapers have to chase you down and chomp you up, not passively filter feed as they naturally move.
Not in this instance. The reaper only hunts you because you are the player. The reaper is 55 metres long and the player is approximately 1.7 m. Ignoring width, the reaper has a ratio of just over 32:1 compared to a human. Animals that have that ratio compared to humans are small birds and rodents. Now, say you are in a forest where you know you can kill anything in there, with no great effort or danger to yourself. Why would you settle to waste time by killing something like a mouse for food when you know you could get a boar or something better to sustain yourself?
You just have to be more angry than it. If you somehow manage that, it'll respect you and go get a Ghost leviathan to get you.
Would you swim and chase something the size of a hornet if you were trying to survive? You’d probably look for bigger prey, the reaper would literally expend more energy hunting you down than it would get from eating 3 of you.
Ok, so i have been playing subnautica for a while, and I had a lot of experience with Leviathans specifically, fighting them, grappling on them to use them as a means of transportation, and of course getting attacked and other stuff.
So I will cut the reasonless talk and cut to the point, I think that the reaper leviathan is the ONLY scary leviathan in both games.
!Ghost leviathans !<
!Ghost leviathans don't really have a certain gimmick, they just come up to you from the dark and they don't even sound intimidating, they sound more annoying and they don't even have a special way of attacking you they just ram you.!<
!The Sea Dragon!<
!The Sea Dragon is pretty intimidating and notably the only leviathan that can ranged attack, but the thing is you can just escape him entirely either with the fast movement of a prawn suit (GRAPPLE ARM GO BRR) or silent running in a relatively secluded location. The lava Lakes dragon makes it harder with a lot of open space (so nowhere to hide) but then it just becomes annoying because if you are there you are just going to the primary containment facility so it just becomes annoying because you just straight up b-line to it and they just fire at you and create loud noise.!<
Moving off from SN to BZ >!(I won't include the Sea Emperor, Reefback, Glow Whale and Ventgarden because you know why)!<
!The Chelicarate !<
!The Chelicarate is considerably fun IF YOU ARE USING THE SEATRUCK because with the seatruck you would more like need to slightly evade them. However they ALSO get annoying because they are everywhere. and after a few little encounters you just get the shock update thingy (official term) and they get annoying. with the prawn you just hit them a few times and you instantly leave and you are also way faster and stronger then them with the prawn.!<
!The Shadow Leviathan !<
!is only bad because of the place they spawn at. the crystal and fabricator caverns are way too tight for a long and considerably fast leviathan which the shadow leviathan is. I think a biome designed like the ILZ would be far more better for them, the crystal caverns is just so small and the crystals block its path and makes it far less affective. Not only that, when you see them, you are already well equipped to the point where!<
!The Ice Worm!<
!do I need to even get started at this?!<
!it is overall just annoying,A few encounters with him you feel he is intimidating and cool. IF YOU ARE ON FOOT, the prawn or the snow fox makes it way less intimidating. actually I would need to say that I actually NEVER saw the ice worm in my BZ saves. even if I just stayed for numerous minutes and lost my way. i didn't even have the noisemakers. but according to information I found at my creative saves and other videos of bz I watched, I can say they are pretty annoying and almost anyone would agree.!<
!The Reaper Leviathan.!<
!We all know them. love or hate them is your choice. but they are the reason subnautica is the subnautica we know. I bet a good bit of us either got the "go to the back of the massive ship" joke from a friend who played before or saw a good youtuber/streamer we watch see the Reaper Leviathan and went "that is epic and scary and I shall play this game."!<
!The Reaper Leviathan is perfect in many ways, they are meant to keep you on edge and not kill you like most leviathans. But unlike them, they execute this perfectly. They take several turns around you before attacking, they come from behind to give you the feeling that you are not safe in these waters and you need to always check your back. their scream alone sends shivers down all the subnautica players' spine. Their grab is downright horrifying. And their head (face) is also scary, not to forget the "attacking from the back" part with the murky and hard to see waters of the biomes they spawn in make its stealthfull attack thing far better then the ghost leviathans stealthfull attack.!<
!These make in my opinion a near Perfect leviathan which perfectly creates fear and awareness to keep you on edge all the time.!<
It's true Reaper really is designed amazing, but I gotta disagree on the Sea Dragon part those guys are really really dangerous sometimes especially considering the hazardous environment where you encounter them. Still tho Reaper is by far the best, honorable mentions to best design (chelicerate, shadow and ice worm) thing I hate about the Ice Worm is that it's not an entity that has a predictable movement, location pattern so it's not fun encountering then just anoying which ia sad considering how cool they are on paper, not to mention the absolutely terrifying centipede like tail, ugh. You just walk, get attacked, get away, repeat. Reapers youcan hear, stealth pass, sonar reveal, remember their position and gtfo or wait for grab and zap so it's fun whem you deal with them. Ice worm is just a specific animation that triggers in specific place and there isn't much you can do about it
sea dragons are dangerous of course, but i think that something really dangerous doesn't automatically become scary, to be honest the design and the sound of the sea dragon fascinates me more then anything.
Their roar is kinda scary and the fact that even though it looks like it's moving very slowly somehow gets to you very fast
I don't think there are Reapers in BZ? I found nothing in that game very intimidating.
reapers arent BZ of course, i just wanted to finalize the essay I wrote with the best leviathan.
I don't disagree. The reaper is the only one that's designed from the ground up to be scary. Oh, sure, the other ones are dangerous, but being dangerous doesn't automatically equal scary.
The reaper gets up in your face, he grabs you with his mandibles, and he takes away control of your character. And that's the only reliable way to scare a video game player. Sure, there's jump scares, and the threat of losing progress and having to farm materials again, but those are very different types of fear. The only thing you have is control of your character, you probably don't even think about it most of the time, it's so natural and obvious that it's below the level of conscious thought. So when something can take away that control, even for a little bit, it's scary.
The Redeads from Legend of Zelda say "hi", by the way.
Dayum bro wrote an essay just for an r/subnautica post 😭😭
Although the Sn2 discord chat has made it clear that the dev team won’t be making leviathans killable, I still believe that it would be a great idea for leviathans to be killed by other leviathan species as well as leviathans within the same species. This would not only create tight situations where you’re caught in between two leviathans fighting for territory, but also a new way to deal with leviathans, being that you could lure a larger leviathan to the smaller leviathan you want to be delt with, and the smaller would be killed and never bother you in that area again. This strategy can be seen in Ark (which I know is much different than Subnautica in a myriad of ways), but would still be pretty applicable to Subnautica in my opinion if allowed.
Some people may say that this makes dealing with leviathans “too easy” and “not a realistic feature in a survival game” if you can just lure an apex leviathan to a smaller one, however I believe that the process of “luring” the leviathan would still be a high risk situation (as the larger leviathan could easily eat you or simply replace the leviathan in the area you want leviathan free), is still very applicable to a survival game. For instance, luring sea dragon to kill a reaper leviathan, the reaper leviathan would be delt with but you still have the risk of the sea dragon prowling around.
Imagine the situation on our world: There’s a shark that keeps on stopping you from exploring this sunken shipwreck that you need to go to. So, you lure a killer whale over (which could also kill you) to deal with the shark. The shark is killed by the killer whale, so you’re able to loot the wreck while the killer whale is feeding on the shark remains, and then stealthily leave the area.
Although the luring mechanic may be a bit too “off the deep end” for Sn2, i believe that the ability to encounter leviathan fights would be a quite cool feature.
They're making the leviathans indestructible?
I dont like to actively get rid of them but damn that's kinda odd
I get why, but I still want some kind of temporary solution or deterrent for them, rather not have a constant looming threat of just sitting and waiting to be eaten
I always wanted to see a Sea Dragon come up and take a Reaper. To see parts of the ecosystem in action.
Like a shark with a seal. As an introduction seeing that stuff would be neat to watch. We see the Reapers take the various smaller organisms out there but a scripted “reaper hunt” involving a sea Dragon would be neat to watch.
The idea of using a leviathan to distract a leviathan has a lot of cool potential
I think a mechanic like this would be awesome for injuring or distracting leviathans, but tbh I agree with the devs on not killing them.
From what we've seen it looks like there's a squid type leviathan that can grab small fast vehicles and stuff, so being able to lure a leviathan over to distract it would be super fun.
I would honestly love an area overrun with a jellyfish swarm like a cave entrance you have to lure a creature to to get access
i absolutely dont disagree. this kinda stuff gets the team really excited. hopefully we can impress in a future EA release. ty for your thoughts!
Never kill in subnautica!!!! There is a reason you get no reward or anything from killing one. The devs want you to respect the fauna, not kill them!
I once used stasis rifle and gas pods to quickly kill a reaper
I actually lost my hardcore world collecting those damned things. I had the rocket built and all, story finished. I was devastated
And that kid is why you collect it with a prawn (for hardcore) so no loss
This is the correct answer. Drop about 25 ish gas pods and SWIM for your life. Those things will destroy you! I don’t remember the exact damage numbers on a gas pod but I believe it is around 120 for each pod for a reaper leviathan. It could be a set amount of damage or it could be percentage based on the target’s health; all I know is I tried this method on a sea dragon and it was dead in seconds. Must’ve stunk pretty bad
It's more like 200dmg per pod.
I prefer stasis and knife for reliability and safety but it is extremely annoying
Used a prawn suit with a drill arm, that isn't the best option, but it did the job
Or just don’t
Hey guys, I tried to test the stasis riffle + knife combo like other guys to kill the fking Reaper that has been haunted me the whole game. However, when I shoot the riffle directly to the head of the Reaper, yes it was locked into the lighting shock, it still eats me like usual?
Any suggestions here?
It ate you after you shot it with the stasis rifle? Try not swimming in front of it’s face.
Thanks for your advice. I did kill it but losing the seamoth tho.
They can’t move but they can still bite. So yes, strike from the sides.
Can you kill a reaper leviathan in subnautica
Key Considerations:
Reaper Leviathan Overview: The Reaper Leviathan is one of the most dangerous predators in Subnautica, known for its aggressive behavior and high health (approximately 1,500 HP).
Combat Strategy: While it is possible to kill a Reaper Leviathan, it requires significant preparation:
Location: Reaper Leviathans are typically found in specific areas like the Aurora, the Dunes, and the Blood Kelp Zone. Knowing their locations can help you avoid unnecessary encounters.
Risk vs. Reward: Killing a Reaper Leviathan is not necessary for game progression and can be risky. Consider whether the effort is worth it, as they drop valuable resources like the Reaper Leviathan's teeth and the Leviathan's body parts.
Takeaway: While you can kill a Reaper Leviathan, it requires careful planning and strategy. If you're looking for a challenge and want to gather resources, go for it, but be prepared for a tough fight! If you're just trying to explore, it might be better to avoid them altogether.
