Character Leveling Guide in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

TL;DR Grinding can help you feel overpowered in normal/dynamic mode, but mastering combat mechanics is crucial for hard mode. Focus on leveling materia and understanding game mechanics.

Grinding and Game Modes

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, grinding can make your characters feel overpowered, especially in normal or dynamic modes. Players have noted that while grinding levels and materia can give you an edge, it won't necessarily make bosses easy due to their multi-phase nature and complex mechanics [1:1][1:2]. On hard mode, the focus shifts more towards mastering combat mechanics rather than relying solely on levels [1:4][1:6].

Dynamic Mode and Enemy Scaling

Dynamic mode offers a consistent challenge by scaling enemy levels to match yours, ensuring that you don't become overleveled [2:4]. This mode is recommended for players who want to maintain a balanced difficulty throughout the game [2:3]. While side quests and additional content can lead to higher levels, the game generally maintains its challenge unless you switch to easier settings [2:6].

Materia and Combat Mechanics

Leveling up materia is essential for tackling endgame challenges and optional content such as VR brutal/legendary challenges [2:1]. Players suggest focusing on useful materia combinations and ensuring all characters are equipped with leveled materia for these tougher battles [1:5]. Understanding and mastering the game's combat mechanics is crucial, especially in hard mode where strategy plays a significant role [1:2].

Job System and JP Management

While not directly related to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, discussions on job systems in other games provide insight into leveling strategies. For instance, swapping jobs when reaching high JP requirements can prevent stagnation and encourage experimentation with different abilities [4:2][4:6]. This approach can be applied to leveling materia and exploring different combat setups in Rebirth.

Recommendations Beyond Discussions

For players looking to maximize their leveling experience, consider focusing on areas where enemies yield high EXP and AP. Additionally, experimenting with different materia combinations and practicing combat mechanics will enhance your overall gameplay experience. Engaging in community forums or guides specific to Rebirth may also provide tailored advice for character progression.

ORIGINAL POST

I genuinely enjoy a relaxing grind to make my characters feel ahead of the curve. Many JRPGs lend themself well to this. Is this feasible in Rebirth or am I mostly going to expect to be at the level that the game wants me to be at?

You can grind but you will not get overpowered. Bosses or sub bosses will still be difficult if you do not master the combat mechanics and prepping your build. Unfortunately, remake/rebirth is action rpg and grinding does not put you in an advantageous position

On normal/dynamic yes grinding level and materia is worth it and you'll feel overpowered at times.

On hard it's not only expected that you've grinded but as well mastered the mechanics.

Not sure I agree. EXP and AP is so high in hard that it’s not really a grind. Regardless of level entering hard, you’ll be max level in probably 30 mins maximum

No_Programmer2482 · 1 year ago

To me the main purpose was to ask can you feel overpowered by grinding? Which I think is plausible in normal/dynamic. Like you said in Hard you will naturally hit max level and materia is not too terrible to grind in NG+. But regardless of level and materia hard mode will be difficult because it's more about the mechanics.

Won't work once you get to hard. Unlike OG, you can't just level to 99 and murder everything. But on easy and normal, you can level up your materia in the sim and pretty much breeze through

I played a lot of JRPGs, whether it's turned based or action, and I understand completely the satisfaction of being OP in battle as a result for grinding. That is actually my preferred way to clear bosses in OG FF7.

Won't get to do that in Remake and Rebirth because bosses have different phases (normally 3). Also, there are various offensive and defensive mechanics (like shields, charged attacks, DPS checks). Sometimes, even gimmicks (need specific attacks to get through). Some boses require you to have a long-term strategy, saving your limit breaks and synergy abilities for a certain oppotune moments.

My point is that grinding to be OP won't work on bosses. You gotta invest vertically and horizontally on your characters, know exactly the strategy prior to battle, and excute them flawlessly to make bosses feel like a breeze.

Grinding for normal enemies and the VR battles will work, tho. Just equip first strike, atb boost, magic plus, magnify + any 3* magic (firaga, thundaga, blizzaga). Do it immediately at the start of battle. Almost everything will die instantly.

But honestly, I think the genius of the FF7R battle system is that it incentives you to do more instead of less in battle. The special abilities outside basic attacks are super cool, and you have to build the right meters to get to them. I played Chapter 1 normal difficulty but found that enemies die almost instantly once I get the hang on the combat. My characters don't get to do anything cool. 😒 So I put the game on Dynamic and never looked back. I'll probably also do a Hard-mode playthrough later (I did it for FFR1).

How worried should i be for overleveling?

I've been progressing through Rebirth steadily, but I'm worried about the consequences of doing all/most of the side content ASAP. How bad is it if i am overleveled? Should i try to avoid it? Is it even possible to do it?

Conversely, how worried should i be if i bline the story for a bit?

The game is pretty easy tbh. You dont even need a single materia on “dynamic mode” which is essentially “normal mode” since there is only that, easy mode, and a hard mode you have to unlock

Im not saying play without materia im just saying keep it on dynamic mode or it will be boring, and in dynamic mode very few fights will even seem risky if you have a solid grasp of the gameplay, which i have to assume 99% of literate players will have pretty quickly

Enemies will be the same level as you, giving you a consistent challenge. It's a very useful mode to switch to if you find yourself one shotting enemies you need to stagger etc for certain Chadley missions.

Just a warning. Endgame part of the game that includes an optional island and vr brutal/legendary challenges are quite hard and requires decently leveled materias. So putting useful materias to everyone on your roster and leveling them up is a good idea if you want to do those challenges eventually.

Resources, techniques and/or advice for a mid level player to climb up to high level

Hello, for some background I am an I-no/Johnny player on floor 10, and I wanna know tips and advice as to how to climb into celestial/high level play that have helped you to get to that level of gameplay or higher.

Im talking stuff like theory, VOD reviews, matchup learning, offense and defense.

Any advice is welcome, and I also hope fellow players like me can use this thread for help as It will (hopefully) help me.

Also if someone wants to help me directly, please shoot a dm, Ill be glad to play some matches.

Ok so I'm going to divide the advice here into 2 parts, Getting into Celestial, and then part 2 as Celestial and beyond, because they are truly two different worlds. For context I'm a long time Strive player and when I grind it out I can sit consistently in the top 100-50 Nago range. I'm no pro player but I've got some experience to my name.

Getting into Celestial. This is a tough thing to do, you're attempting to join the top ~5% at the highest level of ranked play. The first thing that needs to be there is mindset. It seems you've got a mindset centered around learning already established so that's great! But also prepare for lots and lots of frustration, even when you've got it all in theory you can still fail and if you get frustrated you will play worse, when that inevitably happens take a break and come back later. The next thing you need for Celestial is consistency. That means you are hitting the super input 9/10 times during a game, that you aren't accidentally doing moves you don't want all the time. You aren't dropping combos 9/10 times, even if you only know a basic BNB just don't drop it. Finally the last skill you'd need for Celestial is defense. Offense is incredibly strong in this game but we've been given great defensive options, know when to use FD, learn common match ups and their pressure options (specifically when to risk mashing against them), and know how to take that stray defensive hit or block and turn it into your own offense. After you got all that cherry pick those Celestial matches, everyone does it as the challenge just isn't realistically possible. If you feel like you can't beat someone twice during the Celestial Challenge then don't play them twice. If you're sure you can win then try and keep matching them. Best of Luck with the challenge

Since this comment is long enough I'm adding part 2 in the reply to this comment.

Part 2, Celestial and Beyond. I recommend not paying too much attention to this list until after you're in Celestial for a month or two. Also note I'm still on this journey and have much left myself to learn, so much this list will be nowhere near a full picture, but I'll share what helped me most. Additionally to preface while this can all be somewhat target trained 95% of improving in Celestial is just raw playtime and effective practice during sets.

  1. Matchups matchups matchups!!! This is so crucial to GG with how unusual many characters are. When you struggle with a matchup do not ignore it, head to dustloop, look at frame data, watch vods of high level play against that character, and keep playing against them!!

  2. Adaptability. This is the combined skills of recognizing an opponents strengths, weaknesses, and tactics while also being able to capitalize on that knowledge. This is an ever growing skill and one of the hardest things to learn period, flat out. In other mediums of competition, people spend their entire lives dedicated to learning and mastering this one skill. You don't have to master it but you do need to get competent at it.

3.Master the game not just your character. You can get into Celestial while being relatively "bad" (relative to other Celestials) at the game but good at a character. To truly accel you need to master things like roman cancels, instant blocks and thus IBFD, wall breaks, positive bonus, wild assault, deflect shield, and movement of all forms.

  1. X factor. This is more of a tournament thing but can apply to tower as well. The X factor here is simply being that person willing to take the risks needed to win against all odds. Make a new and unusual play, be bold, be calculated, be simple and complex. It is everything that can't really be described beyond just knowing the game so well you can feel when it's time to make something happen and then actually making it happen.

  2. Make friends. Be a part of the community, help teach others. Find partners and streamer tournaments. If you have one explore the local scene. Thrive in the game, not just survive.z

That's my list. Again not comprehensive but there it is. Should you want to get some more personalized help I've coached a person or two here and there. My DMs are open to you and any other aspiring learners who might see this comment. Best of Bullshit Blazing friends!

What do you do after hitting level 9 with jobs mid-chapter 3

Posted by JaredJDub · in r/bravelydefault · 3 months ago

Marking this as spoiler just incase. Just cleared the fire Crystal (and beat the FF Version of a Kirby monster).

A couple of jobs have hit level 9, but I became a little disheartened to see that they jump to 3500 JP to level up.

Do you usually push through? Or do you just start leveling up your other jobs regardless of whether or not you think you really want to use them? I see that JP has scaled (unlike BD2, where it doesn’t) so I was thinking about saving going past 9 for next chapter and beyond.

Swap jobs. The game has the massive JP spike to kind of soft cap job levels. It's the game's way of forcing you to switch up your team without actively forcing it since the amount of JP needed to get from 9 to 10 could have gotten you two more jobs to 9. As for what to swap with, probably something that synergizes well with what you're swapping off of. For example if you were a Spell Fencer swap to something like Ranger or Pirate to add elemental damage to your physical DPS, or if swapping from White Mage consider Performer or Salve Maker to add utility and buffs to your healer.

Generally, I get a handful of jobs to level 9 per character. Not huge amounts but around 3-5 at least I'd say. Having a lot of level 9 jobs gives you a whole lot more choices for job and subjob combos, as well as passives, going forwards - which is great for if you get stuck on a boss. it also let's you experiment with more jobs and that might help you decide which jobs you most want to push up in level once JP gains improve.

In Chapter 4, JP increases a decent amount and it starts becoming viable to push for level 10 and above, or you can continue pushing up a few more jobs to level 9 if you prefer (particularly the new jobs you get in chapter 4). Chapter 5 they increase again and it becomes quite easy to level to 10 and beyond.

nightwing0243 · 3 months ago

This.

I'm on chapter 3 at the moment and have roughly 3-4 jobs per character at level 9. Some of them are level 10 (I think my spellfencer is actually level 11 at this point lol), but I used them quite heavily during story dungeons or keeping certain attackers around for easy battles while I leveled jobs on others - stuff like that, so I wasn't consciously leveling them or anything.

It’s a soft cap to encourage you to use other jobs if you haven’t already. Don’t be disheartened, you’ll be earning 999 JP per farming fight in no time and blasting through those levels.

Real question: How necessary is it to grind?

I barely remembered anything about this game like how spells have a cast time. I just did the Wiegraft battle in Chapter 1. He was level 9 and I was 4-5 still mostly with some basic jobs.

If you're familiar with the game you probably don't need to grind much at all. Just a basic comp of knight/monk that learned auto potion and mage backline can get you pretty far I'd imagine. If you can manage to get access to the more advanced classes like ninja/samurai/calc then the game becomes even easier. Errands unlock ch 2 and will help contribute alot of jp.

I remember barely anything of the game. My plan was a dual wielding Monk, a Geomancer, a Bard, a Summoner and probably a Dragoon or a gunning Archer.

Final Fantasy VII - advice on early power levelling for first timers.

Posted by [deleted] · in r/FinalFantasy · 6 years ago

I am currently doing another run of FF VII on PS4 and I thought I share some tips and advice for early levelling in the game and how to get the most out of the game on "disc 1", especially since a lot of people around here seem to currently play FF VII for the first time.

A great first spot to do some serious grinding are the Mythril Mines. I use this spot to quickly bring the Limit Breaks of my preferred characters (Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie this time around) to Level 3.

To get the Level 2 Limits your characters have to do two things - 1.) use Limits 8 times and kill 80 enemies. To get them to Level 3 they have to use Limits again for 6 or 7 times and kill another 80 enemies.

The fastest ways to achieve this is to constantly use Hyper on the characters (limit gauge fills faster) and to use magic that attacks all enemies at once to quickly kill groups of enemies. The Mythril Mines are a great spot because you can encounter groups of up to 5 enemies in there.

If you play the newer versions of VII this can be done even much quicker with 3x speed and HP/MP/Limit on which allows your characters to use Limits in EVERY round.

This way you can not only get the Level 3 Limits in very short time but your characters will also level up quite a bit. When I left the mines I was like Level 25 already. It is recommended to get enemy skills Matra Magic or if you can Beta (from Midgar Zolom in the swamp) though beating the Zolom and surviving Beta can be tricky if not using the infinite Hp cheat. Using Aeriths Planet Protector limit (which makes the party invincible for a short while) and using Tranquilizer on the character with the enemy skill materia (giving them Sadness status which reduces damage taken) combined with a Elemental/Fire materia combo on the characters armor can be extremely helpful.

If you get Beta you can wipe out entire groups in the Mines with a single attack, making grinding for the Limits much faster.

The next really great spot for grinding in my opinion is the area that you reach after exiting the sleeping forest (the screen with the big fallen tree trunk. the area is called Corel Valley).

This area is filled with large enemy groups that give around 2000 exp per battle and around 250 AP.

By this time you should have weapons with double growth. Putting materia into such weapons will gain DOUBLE the amount of AP for them. Also in Bone village (which you were in right before coming here) you can buy Rune Armlets which give double growth as well. This means you can equip the characters with weapons AND armor that give double AP which allows you to gain double AP for 24 materias in every battle.

If you then fight the enemy groups in Corel Valley you will gain HUGE amounts of AP and exp. Not only will your characters levels skyrocket (my characters are at level 45 and I have not even left the Ancient City yet) but your materia will level up superfast and you can master a lot of them (or at least get the high level spells) in very short time. I already mastered several All materia, fire, ice, lightning, restore etc and have Counter, HP plus on level 3 or 4. With around 50 fights or so you can even get Life 2 before going into Ancient city. I also recommend going to Ancient City to get the powerful Comet materia, then go back to Corel valley and do some more levelling until you get the Comet 2 spell (takes about 25 fights with double growth equipment). Doing this will also give you a lot of Gil. I am currently at 160.000 gil and did like 130.000 gil in less then half an hour in that area. And if you sell mastered All materia this will give 1.4 million (!) gil per materia. You will never ever have money problems in VII after that again.

Once you leave this area you should be around Level 47-50 with all available spells learned, several materias mastered and be such a powerhouse that you will annihilate virtually every boss.

Another tip: Get Big Guard, white wind and Aqualung enemy skills and put on the water ring before you go to Ancient city. It will make things much easier.

Happy travelling.

Fun Fact: After you get the buggy, you can battle monsters that appear during the Underwater Reactor Events, in Junon. You just need to go into the room where the soldiers are doing drill and push the alarm and then you can get into battles. I use this for very quick level gains!

Personally I remember preferring the forest near Junon (where you can first get Yuffie) over the Mines as a Limit grind. I remember the enemies there giving better exp and the smallest group you could find was normally 3 enemies, biggest was 5 (and quite frequently) and there was a rare encounter (surprise attack) of 2. If I'm not mistaken the caves were a little inconsistent.

not really. there are areas in the mines where you always get groups of at least 4 enemies. That's pretty consistent in my book.

There's a few tricks you can do.

At early game there's a console mission that gives some exp, 12 class exp and 8 BP which can be cleared in less than 10 seconds with a levelled range art which whilst not a lot when spammed over and over isn't to bad.

Next is the Irina method in which you control Irina and take advantage of her Brain Jack art into using servant sacrifice to try and instant kill things a few levels higher than you. This one can be a bit tricky to get to grips with and Servant Sacrifice is fussy as hell to hit as well as landing the initial brain jack can go wrong so be careful with it.

Otherwise as far as Class levels specifically are concerned I wouldn't worry until you unlock a certain method of transportation and then is look up what is referred to as "Joker farming"

The Grand Plot can easily level you to 40. Plus I loved the additional class points.

OP, how's your gear? If you haven't yet, you can start transitioning now from raw attack to TP gain and maximize Overdrive.

1 upvotes on reddit
YOM2_UB · 5 months ago

Stun or Topple can guarantee Servant Sacrifice's kill, since it seems to work off an accuracy check that those debuffs bypass. Irina can use Assault Hammer to try and get a topple off before sacrificing. If you can craft any Resistance Reducer augments, even a level V would probably go a long way for landing both Control and Topple.

Do you have Skells? If so, go to the Greater Gemini Bridge in NW Primordia and repeatedly walk back and forth on the Level 46 female Prone soldier there. Don't draw your weapons, just step on her over and over. You can get your levels up to the mid-40s pretty easily while doing this. And at the same time you can earn enough Class Points for everyone who is currently on your roster.

Enel put a video out on this. Basically get the one heavy skell that has some Thermal Dmg Up effects on its gear, not Mastema the other one, then throw a Phoenix weapon on it and grab a few Insecoid Slayer XX augments and throw it on your weapons (despite being XX this is VERY easy Skell Weapon augment to make). Then there is a ravine in Oblivia with tons of higher level Bugs. You run through pulling them all, then kill them with a single Phoenix. Go watch Enel's video for the exact location and build parameters. That is just the general strategy.

Find any small-size enemies (like Blattas) that are higher level than you and proceed to eradicate them with Skells. Exp is based on level, but enemy difficulty is based on size. So you will be able to mow down hordes of small enemies with ease while still earning the same amount of exp.

That sounds like a safe assumption. Though I also assume leveling will revert between installments. So don't grind to lvl 99 in part 1 and think you'll be there for there for all of the titles.

At least based on games like Mass Effect or Xenosaga.

Characters level up on their own?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/FinalFantasyVII · 4 years ago

I started playing the og FF7 a while ago, (Still haven't beat the game, I've been busy replaying some zelda games of mine) and I mainly used Yuffie, Tifa, Cloud, and Red XIII, I occasionally switched them around. I only ever used Barrett and the others for their respective missions, and for Barrett in particular, I think I ditched him at level 15 after leaving Midgar. (I didn't even equip any materia onto him before the Dyne fight, had to win that solely on the weakest gun I had and some hi-potions. it was a LONG fight.) but somehow, Barrett seemed to be higher than the level-15-weakling he was after midgar. Do the other players not in your party level up at a slower rate than your main characters as they level up? just wondering, hoping to see your opinions.

They gain half the exp of those in the battle party.

It's how they make it so you can swap party members in and out and don't get caught with your pants down in places where you have to use certain party memebers. Otherwise by the time you got to Junon you wouldn't want to change your party.

Yeah and in other games like FF8, where you might want to strictly control levels, they don't level up outside of the battle party. Square actually thinks about these things!

Faster way to level up? It's really Character EXP 7?

Posted by Aurelius_Red · in r/FFVIIEverCrisis · 1 year ago

Not a huge deal, and I'm 95% sure asking this is a fool's errand, but there's no harm in trying.

Unless I'm missing something the fastest way to level is selecting Character EXP 7, turning on Auto and speeding up the battle.

I like the game very much and will continue playing regardless. Just wondering.

Auto-clicker for the free XP levels if that’s available to you, while you rest/sleep. If not, then as others have said, EXP 7 w/ cactuar event or FF9 event grind for 30k (I think?) per run.

Which stage do you recommend doing on repeat with an autoclicker?

Run through all the free stam XP levels on auto for a few times. Whichever one you don’t come close to dying in, farm that one.

You can wait for the cactuar event that seems to come once a month or wait for the character exp bonus week. Otherwise, yes, that is the most exp per stamina/time at the moment. Though people also use stuff like autoclickers on the free exp stage.

Hmm, thanks. I don't think I'll go through the particular trouble of auto-clicks, but I'd see how that would help some.

Auto clicker on your computer.

The fastest method of level grinding will vary from team to team. A good rule of thumb is doing the stage that your teams gets to eliminate the scorpion before the tail laser attack. It's a lenghty animation and finishing before it will help. Either way, that's not guaranteed to be the fastest way, cuz you need to take account of reload time for the stage too. Now about stage 7, it's definitely the better ratio of exp/stamina, that's an absolute statement.

Character leveling guide in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Key Considerations for Character Leveling in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth:

  1. Experience Points (EXP): Focus on battles that yield high EXP. Engage in side quests, monster hunts, and tougher enemies to maximize your leveling speed.

  2. Character Roles: Each character has unique abilities and roles (e.g., tank, healer, damage dealer). Level up characters according to their strengths to optimize your party's effectiveness.

  3. Materia System: Equip and level up Materia to enhance your characters' abilities. Prioritize leveling Materia that complements your characters' roles and playstyle.

  4. Limit Breaks: Use Limit Breaks strategically in battles to deal massive damage and gain additional EXP. Leveling up your Limit Breaks can also provide significant advantages.

  5. Equipment and Upgrades: Regularly upgrade your weapons and armor to improve stats. Look for equipment that boosts EXP gain or enhances specific character abilities.

  6. Explore Thoroughly: Take time to explore the game world. Hidden areas often contain valuable items, Materia, and tougher enemies that provide more EXP.

Recommendations:

  • Balanced Party: Maintain a balanced party with a mix of roles to handle various combat situations effectively.
  • Focus on Side Quests: Completing side quests not only provides valuable rewards but also contributes significantly to character leveling.
  • Utilize Save Points: Save often, especially before challenging battles, to avoid losing progress and to experiment with different strategies.

By following these tips, you can efficiently level up your characters and enhance your overall gameplay experience in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
