Cheapest International Calling Plans

TL;DR

  • Google Fi offers unlimited international data and calls for $60 [2:2].
  • Airalo provides affordable eSIMs for high-speed data while traveling [4:5], [4:9].
  • Viber offers unlimited international calls for $5.99/month [5:1].

Google Fi

Google Fi is frequently recommended for its comprehensive international service. It offers unlimited data, calls, and texts for $60 per month, making it a viable option for those who need constant connectivity abroad [2:2]. Users have praised its reliability and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional carriers like Verizon [4:7].

Airalo eSIMs

For travelers looking for flexible options, Airalo provides eSIMs that are easy to install and fairly priced. This allows users to maintain their original SIM for emergencies or two-factor authentication while benefiting from local data plans [4:5], [4:9]. It's particularly useful for those who travel across multiple countries.

Viber

Viber's international calling plan is another affordable option, offering unlimited calls to mobile and landline numbers for $5.99 per month [5:1]. This service can be especially handy for travelers needing to make frequent calls without incurring roaming charges.

Local SIM Cards

For those visiting specific countries, purchasing a local SIM card can often be the most economical choice. Options like Lebara offer free calls to certain countries with their XL or XXL plans [5:2]. Similarly, Coles prepaid SIM provides unlimited calls and SMS to 15 international locations [5:3].

Considerations

While these options provide various solutions for international calling, it's important to consider factors such as coverage in specific regions, the necessity of maintaining your current phone number, and whether internet-based calling apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime might suffice for your needs [5:5], [5:6].

ORIGINAL POST

Heading to Mexico end of this month and need a good plan for international calls and texts (my entire job is essentially making and taking calls.

I already have Xfinity mobile and they have an add-on for $5 a day in Mexico and everything else I saw online was about the same. But was just wondering if anyone knows of other plans for a better price. Preferably unlimited since I use my phone a lot for work. TIA.

Google Fi has unlimited data for international travel. The service is pretty great. I've used it in Tulum. When you have multiple ppl on your plan it is cheaper.

Cheap international calls ?

Posted by Swimming_Shark7 · in r/UKFrugal · 3 years ago

Hi,

I'm looking for a cheap international calls service that would optionally provide me with permanent number and allows me to call both phone numbers as well as landline for cheap. This excludes various messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook\Meta and so on.

I need to make around 6 hours of calls abroad per month and I was looking which popular internet service providers offer the best deal and I feel like I'm being trapped and ripped off for them all because how can you explain this:

5 hours of calls for £8, both mobile and landline then £1.80 per minute, so giving that I would need another hour, that would come up to £108 + £8 = £116.

I would use free means like WhatsApp or whatever but not everyone has smartphone on which they can be reached on. Also, prices are already high as f*ck and keep rising, recent examples being gas and electricity\energy.

What are the best and foremost cheap ways to reach someone abroad ?

Any specific app/service that you recommend ?

I and my fiancè use Googlefi to text/ call eachother. Were in a long distance relationship (UK-USA) and I've now switched from my UK provider completely to googlefi. Its 60 dollars each for unlimited data, calls and text not sure if this is in your budget but remember that plan includes everything and you could use it as your main phone number / plan. Hope that helps, also I can give a referral code for a free $20 if you'd like & if that's allowed.

Which country do you need to call?

Just sign up with a VoIP service from that country that lets you get a local number and call 'local' (ie. Within that country) numbers for free.

The best VOIP services for international calling (my deep dive look)

Posted by Informal_Weekend_801 · in r/VirtualComms · 5 months ago

If, like me, you're old enough to have used regular phones to make international calls you'll probably also remember getting hit by a phone bill roughly equivalent to the GDP of an industrialised nation.

As a digital nomad with clients dotted around the world, I've become all-too familiar with saving a few shekels by using VOIP services for placing international calls.

I'd like to act as your concierge as I take you on a tour of the very best options available.

RingCentral:

OK, so this isn't the cheapest option available - but you get what you pay for.

Users can enable international calls from the admin panel. You can then place calls at RingCentral's rates e.g. calls to landlines in Germany are $0.039 per minute.

RingCentral also supports incoming calls from international numbers and you can even add international numbers (even toll-free ones) for foreign customers to dial.

The admin dashboard can be configured only to allow certain users to make international calls. There are also some countries RingCentral will block by default like the Philippines for safety reasons.

This makes RingCentral good for multinational corporations with cash to spare, as you also get a ton of extra features like video conferencing. I've also always found call quality with RingCentral to be crystal clear.

8x8:

Like RingCentral, 8x8 offers metered international calling. The exact coverage depends on your subscription and telephony setup. 8x8 has PSTN services in over 55 countries but virtual coverage in over a hundred. The site has a nifty feature where you can build your own 'rate card' depending on where you want to call.

For instance, calls to China cost around $0.05 per minute, though you can get unmetered calling for some plans. The platform also supports toll-free inbound numbers for international customers, though you'll need to speak to 8x8's sales team for an exact quote.

Talkroute:

This business phone service is an old favorite, though its international calling options are limited. It only supports outbound calls to US & Canada. You can't forward calls to international numbers, plus if you have a toll-free number and someone tries to dial it from abroad it won't connect.

That's the bad news. The good news is that Talkroute works over good old-fashioned PSTN telephone lines. This makes for very reliable call quality and coverage - even when the Internet's patchy.

If you have a regular US number, you can still receive international calls via the platform. And as Talkroute points out, since you can use the service with your regular telephone equipment, you can still place international calls via your local telecoms company.

Google Voice:

For those of you looking to save some pennies (I don't blame you, we've all been there!) Voice can be a great budget solution.

You can bag yourself a US VOIP number free of charge on some plans, plus calls to the US & Canada are free.

If you're using Voice and try to call an international number you'll hear an announcement that the call's being routed through the platform and how much it'll cost.

Google makes it easy to work out their rates and these can be very reasonable. Calling a German landline, for example, is just one cent per minute. (RingCentral costs almost four times as much.)

As much as I admire Google Voice's international bona fides, its other business VOIP features are limited. For example, it doesn't integrate at all well with non-Google apps like CRM software.

My two cents...

I've tried so many different VOIP services, sometimes I feel like a kid in a candy store as there are so many offerings.

Still, I'd say if you're business making tons of international calls or are seeking global domination, then go for RingCentral or 8x8.

If you're on a budget, Google Voice's rates are tough to beat. If you mostly receive international calls, then Talkroute's a solid pick.

So, my fellow global communicators: what's been your experience with international VOIP calling? Are there any hidden gems I've missed? If so, please share your experiences in the comments!

Solid recommendations dude! I think even JustCall is at par with some of the solutions you've mentioned in your list. They offer international numbers, free dialing minutes every month, caller ID management, help with 10DLC registration, and other important features like call logging, call recording, IVR setup, etc.

People I know who use it say even their AI suite is a bang for the buck, and their dialers are great for executing high-volume outbound campaigns. (This features are of course a part of their higher plans)

I thought I'd put it out here for other people who might have similar requirements.

If international calling is your priority, look for providers with flat-rate packages to avoid surprise bills. I've been using net2phone for our business that regularly calls clients in Europe and Asia. Their plans include unlimited calling to 40+ countries and they offer local virtual numbers in over 50 countries, which has been great for establishing regional presence. The call quality has been consistently clear even on international calls. You can check their international coverage at https://www.net2phone.com to see if your frequent destinations are included.

If you don't care about sms/MMS to back home, just get a sim or esim in the country that you're traveling to

That's exactly what I'd heard about google fi. Was thinking maybe if we switched plans now - 2 months before we leave - we could establish a pattern of calling from the US and then maybe they wouldn't cut us off immediately, which is what I have read has happened to others.

Switch to T-mobile (I sound like an ad lol); they offer free international text and data, and cheap phone calls for up to three months. I switched from Verizon for that reason, but the icing was that t-mobile’s monthly charge is lower :)

Worth mentioning that T-mobile only gives you free low-speed data when traveling abroad and that calls are 25 cents a minute. I ended up using Airalo on a recent trip so I could have high-speed data.

ETA: Looks like things are different with the newer T-mobile plans.

Best SIM for cheap International calls

Very handy if you travel to multiple overseas destinations also. As you can return peoples calls (global roaming), via the Viber app. They'll see your caller ID just like any other normal domestic call.

Looking for Cheapest International Calling from Stateside Mobile Service

Posted by Ok-Sport-9020 · in r/NoContract · 8 months ago

So I'm looking for the cheapest mobile service that has some form of international calling from stateside USA (need more than just Canada/Mexico), there are many countries I need to make calls to any given day for work, and I know each service usually has different number of countries supported for international calling. But the most important thing is not the number of countries available. It's actually if the mobile service actually allows large amounts of international calling, in the past I had issues with mobile providers where after about 2 hours of international calling they flag my account and disable the so called "Unlimited international calling", which I find crazy. Any ideas on a good service for my needs ?

Most cheap mobile services that offer international calling will limit you to a certain amount of minutes each billing cycle as outlined in the terms of use (ex. Tello limits international calling to 1000 minutes on unlimited voice plans) and/or limit the number of different international numbers you may dial within any billing cycle (ex. US Mobile and Good2Go Mobile limit to 15 different international numbers). Unless you are working for yourself, see if your organization will pay for a line with international calling or a VOIP application that allows international calling.

1 upvotes on reddit
Ok-Sport-9020 · OP · 8 months ago

Oh that makes sense now, does Tello have the highest allowed international minutes you are aware of with the 1,000 monthly ?

Also do you have any recommendations for any VOIP applications for international calling, good priced ones that is ? I have no experience with any paid VOIP stuff really

1 upvotes on reddit
CloudAdministrator · 8 months ago

does Tello have the highest allowed international minutes you are aware of with the 1,000 monthly ?

It's not the highest allowed international minutes, but it is a generous allowance for the price point.

Buying an international calling add-on from an MNO like T-Mobile would be your best bet if you are after the most possible international minutes under fair use policy. However, VOIP solutions can be more cost effective and run over a mobile data connection. Different VOIP providers have different calling rates varying by country. Google Voice, Skype, and Rebtel are a few VOIP providers to compare rates from.

2 upvotes on reddit
L
Lucky_Corner · 8 months ago

Tello offers 1000 minutes of international calling per 30 day period to 60 countries.

The limit for international calls is set at 1000 min/30-day billing cycle and this balance is not rolled over. In case of abuse of usage, we reserve the right to suspend, terminate or restrict your ILD Services without any prior notice.

The cheapest unlimited call and text plan with no data is $8/mo.

Google Fi if you are solely reliant on cell network for data. T Mobile if you will be on WiFi most of the time in most countries. G

Google Fi probably edges out because T Mobile has a clause that says they can shut you down if you are international for too long (intended for temporary trips)

TMobile is the best hands down. That said if you are STAYING somewhere overseas just ditch your USA number and get a local plan. Check with your carrier about unlocking you phone before you go or plan to buy local when you get where you are going.

Downvoting OP and their comments shows how people can be so tone-deaf. If it wasn’t clear before, it definitely should be, by now- but as we all know, if only common sense was actually…well, ‘common’.

OP might be looking for a cheap method of “offline calling”, and not internet-based calling as we have on FaceTime, Discord, Teams / Skype, Google Meet, Instagram, Snapchat, Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, and so on.

I don’t know the reason why OP wishes that, but that’s not the point here if the condition of the requirement is definitively specified - “it has to be a normal call” and by “normal”, presumably “offline” call.

My guess? Probably privacy.

Can phone carriers tap into such offline calls? Probably. Yes actually, why not? They are tracked by law enforcement, whenever that’s deemed necessary.

But online calls? Lmao, we know how that works like…

I know about Signal and all that, but again, if OP wishes for offline calling, then Signal or any other such alternative would be irrelevant.

Jumping straight to the answer now, well, I believe Jio is one of the cheapest carriers that might allow OP have what they are looking for, hopefully it’s cheap enough for them.

Cheers 👋🏼

You didn't get the question either, he doesn't want to call people from his phone number he wants a VoIP service that can call even landline numbers in other countries, Jio is not cheaper than online VoIP.
If you want a reputable VoIP service with calling numbers not blocked or marked as spam I would recommend Microsoft Team's VoIP if you are looking to cold call businesses in other countries.
He asks in the post for a "service provider or an app", so no wonder people got confused. It is OP's responsibility to frame his question better.

Most comments here are stupid. People have no concept of a landline number. Let's say I need to call Chase or Citibank or Walmart customer service? I need to make a real phone call. Let's say I have to call the Hilton in Warsaw or Paris? Again, I would need a real phone call. Let's say I ordered some product or service and need to call them? Things like WhatsApp or Telegram don't work.

cheapest international calling plans

Key Considerations for Cheapest International Calling Plans

  1. Plan Type: Determine if you need a prepaid plan, postpaid plan, or pay-as-you-go option. Prepaid plans often offer better rates for occasional use.

  2. Destination Countries: Rates can vary significantly depending on the country you are calling. Check if the plan covers the specific countries you need to call.

  3. Calling Features: Look for plans that include features like unlimited calling to certain countries or low rates for specific regions.

  4. Mobile Apps: Consider using VoIP services like WhatsApp, Skype, or Viber, which allow you to make calls over the internet, often for free or at a low cost.

  5. Carrier Options: Major carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile often have international calling plans. Compare their offerings, as they may have special promotions or bundles.

  6. Hidden Fees: Be aware of any additional fees, such as connection fees or monthly service charges, that can affect the overall cost.

Recommendations:

  • Google Voice: Offers low rates for international calls and can be used on various devices. It's a great option for flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

  • T-Mobile Magenta Plan: Includes unlimited calling to over 70 countries, which can be a great deal if you frequently call those destinations.

  • AT&T International Calling: Offers affordable add-ons for international calling, especially if you’re already an AT&T customer.

  • Prepaid Calling Cards: These can be a cost-effective solution for occasional international calls. Look for cards with low per-minute rates and no hidden fees.

By comparing these options, you can find the best plan that suits your calling needs while keeping costs low.
