TL;DR MacBooks can experience issues such as keyboard problems, charging anomalies, software bugs, and hardware failures. Solutions range from using built-in features to manage battery health to downgrading macOS versions for stability.
Keyboard and Hardware Problems
One of the most notorious issues with newer generations of MacBooks is the butterfly keyboard problem, which has affected typing functionality due to dust and debris [1]. Additionally, some 2014 models have experienced issues with anti-reflective coating wearing off
[1]. For hardware-related issues like motherboard problems or overheating in certain models
[1:1], checking Apple's official exchange and repair programs may provide solutions
[1:3].
Charging and Battery Management
MacBooks employ optimized charging to extend battery lifespan by halting charging at 80% [2:1]
[2:4]. This feature can be misunderstood as a warning but is intended to preserve battery health. Users can manually adjust settings to charge fully if needed
[2:4]. Persistent charging issues below 80% might require professional inspection
[2:5].
Software Bugs and MacOS Updates
MacOS updates can introduce various bugs, such as file permissions errors, Bluetooth connectivity loss, and external hard drive mounting issues [4:3]
[4:5]. Sonoma updates have been particularly problematic, leading some users to downgrade to Ventura for stability
[4:7]. Rebuilding the Spotlight index has been suggested as a workaround for search function issues
[4:8].
Visual Artifacts and Streaming Issues
Some users report visual artifacts appearing on screens, particularly when viewing non-white backgrounds [5:3]. These issues may be related to streaming settings or graphics processing and could potentially be resolved by adjusting display settings or consulting technical support
[5:4].
Community Resources and Support
For ongoing issues not addressed by Apple directly, community resources such as GitHub repositories dedicated to Apple support problems can be valuable [3:1]. Additionally, tech channels like Louis Rossmann's YouTube channel offer insights into common MacBook issues and potential fixes
[1:5].
Newer generations have the keyboard problems I know some 2014 pros have this anti reflective coating problem but is there a list other than what recall programs apple has?
I want to know the problems apple won’t recall !!
That’s the list I’ve already found but there are issues like the one I mentioned that are not listed there :/
Well I heard something about the motherboard issues with 2018 macbook air, and something with overheating 15' macbook pro, but i'm not sure if they fixed it or not.
Check out the Louis Rossmann Youtube channel. You’ll find plenty.
Thanks !
Hello guys , I am facing this issue in my macbook it's showing me this warning , is it a issue should I need to Take it to the Service
Totally normal. It’s the ideal state… took my new M4 some time to get there. It learned that you’re using the Mac unplugged rarely, so it rests the battery at 80% to not stress it. Lithium batteries are unhealthy when kept fully charged for a long time. That’s why people use 3rd party battery management apps, even though the best is to use the built in native battery management system. It’s just take more time until it learns a full charge isn’t always needed. It’ll eventually charge to 100, sometimes discharging itself to 92, then 80, etc. No need to take it to service
It shows the same warning at 10 percent for a couple of minutes and starts to charge
yes that's how it works. not a warning, just info. it lets you know what's going on so you don't think it needs service.
As others have said, optimised charging halts charging at 80% to protect the battery and extend its lifespan. You can right click the battery and I (from my poor memory) ask it to charge to 100%.
If like me you leave it connected to power 99% of the time, leave optimised charging on as it cannot hurt.
Also check battery condition in system profiler, or the battery settings.
It is probably optimised charging (assuming you have it plugged in most of the time). Keep an eye on it. It should start charging on its own.
If the charge keeps going down well below 80, have it looked at.
I have a been a longtime Mac user ever since Leopard and found recently Apple's support for MacOS recently quite cavalier. (Sorry this is an absolute essay but it is really a joke)
I have raised three issues (the first being a known issue) up with Apple support only to these issues not be taken seriously. The first relates the AUValTool (Audio Unit Validation Tool) which is script incorporated into the kernel to validate first and third party plug-ins for use in Logic and Final Cut. Since the new permissions system that was implemented in Catalina, this has been an issue because this script does not have the ability to launch and validate plug-ins as there no bypass built into the script for Gatekeeper. Subsequently this has got even more difficult with Big Sur because the Gatekeeper permissions have gone even further and require complete overhaul in how the plug-in is installed. In speaking to a senior advisor, they said 'developers need to make sure they develop for the changes within the OS'. This is completely ignorant of the fact that A) audio units are Apple's own proprietary API within Core Audio so they are developed to an existing Apple approved architecture standard and B) for these plug-ins to work within MacOS they need to be validated which can not be achieved with the script not having the necessary GateKeeper permissions.
Secondly, I had discovered that the scaling function within Screen Sharing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_Sharing) doesn't work with sharing a 16:10 ratio (Macbook Pro Retina) to a 16:9 (Mac Mini/Pro). I was told for weeks that there was something wrong with the hardware (having to reset the SMC, NVram, native HDMI port was broken) and even told to see if the issue was happening in Safe Boot. The Safe Boot thing is completely irrelevant as you can't connect to any server while in safe boot and the Apple support team should have known that. I reported this while Catalina was still the primary OS as Big Sur had not been released yet, only to be told that moving to Big Sur would fix this (went to Big Sur still doesn't work, went back to Catalina on Time Machine) and the fact that this software hasn't had an update since November 2014 (according to the Wikipedia). In speaking to Apple support they have just told me that I have to upgrade back up to Big Sur to provide system logs even though the app hasn’t been updated in Big Sur even though I provided those logs when Catalina was the most up to date OS. The senior also just advised me to change the resolution of the MacBook Pro, yet she didn’t know that it’s impossible to do that anymore as it was removed from the display preferences. Yet again wasting my time with troubleshooting when it’s a software bug.
The third ticket which is the most concerning of all the issues I have is using a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter that crashed the CoreAudio driver. For people that don't know, CoreAudio and subset is Apple's proprietary audio drivers that make up the entire Apple lineup of products produce sound. When I had a Macbook Pro connected to a Mac Mini via ethernet, both devices detected each other as audio input and output devices in the Sound system preferences and automatically selects it (I think this could be apart of the AVB standard which is incorporated in the MacOS kernel as it allows 16 channels bi-directionally through the Thunderbolt). As it was automatically selected as an audio device, it immediately crashed the drivers on the Macbook Pro and the CoreAudio process would show up as not-responding in Activity Monitor. Even after force quiting the process and it would automatically relaunch and crash again because its a major part of the OS (it's a Daemon App). This would loop and cause my CPU capacity to go to maximum to the point where it caused a kernel panic and crashed MacOS completely. The kernel panic happened in two instances, the first was when the CPU was just stuck in that loop of the non-responsive apps and the second was when I unplugged the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter.
In talking to Apple support they have pointed this to being a hardware issue which I find fairly hard to believe as I have had Audinate Dante (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dante_(networking)) AoE drivers and programs installed ever since they were released and never had any issues in any of those Thunderbolt ports with this exact same adapter and cables (Cat5e and Cat6a) and even after this was happening. Considering that the Thunderbolt standard has been on nearly every Mac since 2011 this covers an insane amount of devices, this is highly concerning as the potential for this cause issues everywhere and Apple's support failed to realize this at all. Most Thunderbolt 2 and 3 dock include a RJ45 connector and would use the same Thunderbolt drivers which could have the potential to crash vast amounts of devices. I am hoping that publicly bringing this out it will be seen by a senior Apple engineering employee who will take this seriously. If anyone has any contact with anyone in the engineering department I would be happy to talk to them about this as the support and senior advisors really have no clue. Also has anyone experienced similar issues?
TIA
EDIT: Happy to include screenshots showing what I am on about if people are confused
EDIT: Apple is refusing any support while I am still running Catalina even though the APIs in question haven't been updated in Big Sur
For the growing club of unhappy apple customers I have created this:
https://github.com/etewiah/help_with_apple_support
You can create an issue for any apple tech support problems you encounter and we as a community will work to get it to the attention of apple.
Goal would be to centralize here encountered issues to help make a decision on when to upgrade for those holding out and how to workaround issues.
(edited suggestion by /u/invenue:)
Since this thread might be useful several weeks going forward, I'd suggest everyone include their mac model, macos version, details on bug and workarounds if any.
Same issue after Sonoma install. I'm pissed!
I installed Sonoma on my M1 Mac. Had similar experience as Zen 1.
1.) Random Restarts
2.) loss of bluetooth connections
3.) connected external hard drives would randomly unmount, and would not re-mount after re-plugging then in. Only re-booting the Mac would restore mounting, until they would randomly unmount yet again.
And those are just a few of the more persistent.
I have been a mac user since the 1980s. I haven't seen these many issues since the release of OS 9. I put my M1 back onto Ventura. I need a reliable production machine. I may skip Sonoma all together.
I know everything can't be caught though the gold master, but some of these should have definitely been picked up.
I suppose i should update and say that 14.1 & 14.1.1 have been much more stable for me; my restart issue never re-appeared.
I have a 2012 mac mini that I OCLP'd up and same thing, it had a few random edge case glitches on 14.0 that were fixed by the minor updates.
I'm having the same problem since updating to Sonoma.
Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020, 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon Pro 5700 8 GB, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
I usually have two hard drives connected. Immediately mounted every time I turned on my computer. Now after updating, one shows up after a couple of minutes and the other one takes 10 - 20 minutes to load. Connected the slow one to Samsung tv (it loaded fine) then reconnected back to iMac and turned it on and it loaded almost immediately but after I shut it down and started it back up it's back to mounting slow.
The external drive that loads fast is a WD Elements 2TB and the slow one is LaCie 4TB.
And Disk Utility doesn't work until both hard drives have mounted. I have done first aid on both. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong the hard drives themselves.
I really regret the update but don't want to downgrade in case it creates even more problems.
I'm having this same issue with my lacie 5tb hard drive. Makes me super worried. Cause I ran first aid and a disk check software and says nothing seems wrong with my hard drive. I have backups just in case, but don't want to have a broken hard drive because of an OS update...
and anyone I ask for help just blames it on my hard drive, but it was working fine before the update...but now, like you said, takes about 10 minutes to mount
14.2:
File permissions broke. Can't save and duplicate a file
A load of file corruption happened that gets picked up by Disk Utility
14.1:
Mail is currently broken. It will stop downloading emails and generating notifications
Photos screensaver sometimes freezes
14.0:
Many files in the Bin don't have a put back option
Corrupt files caused by update
Wallpapers were not working properly. Kept forcing Sonoma Horizon regardless of settings or glitching out in other ways
EDIT: Added which version the bugs were first seen
I also get kernel panics since sonoma update.
Yeah, it’s so awful I downgraded to Ventura. Thankfully the Time Machine backup made on Sonoma actually worked on Ventura except iMessages.
Yes. I've tried to rebuild the spotlight index, it took many hours to complete. Once that was done i was able to search the file faster and able to see them properly. Then when i installed the new update, everything was lost. Files not seen and not even able to search them through finder. Then i once again tried to rebuild the spotlight index, It worked. Then i tried to shutdown my macbook. Later when i turned it on, the hard disk issue happened again and file search was back to the old mess. Don't know what to do.
Yes, same here - search produces a crazy amount of results so am not bothering. I hear you with the workflow disruption - it's like a whole cabal of stupid micro glitches that constantly require solving, googling, workarounds etc. I think Apple no longer value their legacy/core customers, they're going all out on widgets and imacs you can juggle, iOS like desktop OS, networking your Apple everything (great for advertisers and data gathering) over form and functionality.
178 days since you posted this comment - I have this issue happening in real time. Did you ever find a workaround or did you downgrade your OS?
Since this thread might be useful several weeks going forward, I'd suggest everyone post their issues or bugs in this format:
Gonna need more context about what you think is wrong? This looks like a streaming issue unless there are more details
I'm not sure how to explain but every screen or website I lick has this colored rectangle except for white backgrounds. It's not just this stream.
First of all, stop licking the screen and websites.
yeah those artifacts look stream related.
its on everything I click except for white background websites. Ive had this issue all year it just randomly showed up on my laptop screen one day.
How do you get latest macos
BINGO!! Opencore patcher is the answer. The thing runs as good as it did on the original MacOS. Maybe even better because of the newer drivers and support that the Opencore Patcher has to offer. I'm using the laptop as my replacement while my actual laptop is getting repaired. This thing is so capable I'm so impressed by what a 13 year old MacBook is capable of. Typing all this on the Mac too :)
I'm not sure Sequoia is the best MacOS for this Mac. If it is upgarded to 8gb of ram and ssd, then it should work nicely on Linux Mint.
It's silly, my college (UK) teacher's macbook is 10-11 years old on macos 11, it will stop getting chrome updates shortly and Microsoft teams desktop app no longer works
Meanwhile older windows 7 laptops can upgrade to windows 10 and get full app support
That's why I love high-spec Intel machines. They hold up. When people find their 10-year-old Intel MBP is too slow or behind, it's either an underpowered base model or it lacks a dedicated GPU.
While I am a recent Silicon convert, I'll gladly squeeze as much performance out of a good Intel machine as possible. Your trash pick MBP is a nice find. It's very encouraging. Cherish and enjoy!
Yes, Opencore works wonderfully on my 2012, installed a ssd drive and running on 8 gig ram with Sequoia and its an intel i5 cpu, live wallpaper and youtube streaming with latest Google Chrome using ChatGPT and other apps. Would love to bump the ram up to 16 gig but it runs great for a 2012 model and is usable in everyday tasks but not too many of course. Some apps will work some wont and some Mac features wont be available due to hardware limitations.
Ahh... i thought the comment you were referring to was going to be check for private keys lol.
I'm using this laptop for a week while my regular Zephyrus G15 (I'm a windows user) gets fixed. I have plenty of newer laptops I could use but I took this 2012 MacBook out of storage for a bit of a challenge. It's been so incredibly usable I don't even feel challenged using this. It's such a machine. i5-3210m in this thing, that's why. It's a 35W CPU not a power saving 15w one like the newer U series Intels
Wattage doesn't really correlate to performance, especially comparing between generations. A 3210m is approximately as performant as a 5th gen U chip, based on benchmarks.
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i5-3210M-Notebook-Processor.74458.0.html
(And of course, we had the M1 that maxed out at 30W, which beat out an 8th gen Intel chip that could max out at 120W.)
The speed is more so because it's a Mac, and Apple really really likes to tune macOS to run speedy on the chips they use. That's the Just Works(TM) Apple ideology going on there. Definitely wondering if macOS 26 and Liquid Glass will make the 2012 Mac show its age, though.
Of course, since it's a 35W, battery life will also be pretty poor in this thing, unfortunately. But it's fine because it's a MacBook Pro, and one during a phase where Intel's chips weren't screaming hot from being stuck in 14nm. Ivy Bridge was Intel's first 22nm chip, I believe, and 22nm had amazing longevity even on the desktop side.
Thanks! I actually found it around a year back but since my Zephyrus G15 is in repair I've pulled this out as a cool 1 week challenge to try and live with the thing. I am SLIGHTLY cheating though. I put in 8GB of RAM and a 512GB Samsung Evo SSD. The thing absolutely flies now. Entirely a CPU bottleneck but since it's an M series i5 it has 35w of power. Not too shabby. Yes it has a CV/DVD but I'm Gen Z and have never touched a CD or DVD in my life :)
I put 16G RAM and a 1TB SSD in mine. Great machine but the wife pretty much only uses it to store her tens of thousands of photos these days. I haven’t tried OCLP on it yet.
I have an old Macbook Late 2011 and the battery health is at 87%. I think this is a good result after so many years of usage.
You shouldn’t have bought another Intel Mac. Sorry but that’s not an upgrade at all😭
I was choosing between the macbook air m1 and this macbook. I had a big screen in priority. For me, there are no advantages in M1, Apple intelligence is not available in my country. The only plus of M1 is that there are native ports of new AAA games, but Bootcamp is 100 times better than that. Cyberpunk on Air M1 runs at 30 fps, and on this macbook pro at 60 fps. security updates will come until 2028. People are exaggerating the coolness of Apple silicone. They just hold the charge longer, that's all.
The problem is that MacOS 27 (next year) will no longer support Intel macs.
Yep. You do you OP. But I will be honest. You are purposely trashing on the Apple Silicon Macs. It’s not just long battery life, but you go ahead and believe what you wanna believe because I had your “new” Mac that you have, the 16” 2019 and I was so glad to get that POS thing out of my goddamn life. The fan blew all the time it kept getting hot. But if you like what you like that’s fine but don’t trash on the newer models because to be honest the MacBook Air performance wise will be far better than your new 16 inch.
You make no sense.
M1 performs way better than any Intel Mac, has 50%+ longer battery life, and doesn't even come close to its heat output. macOS 26 is the last release for Intel Macs. OCLP won't help you install newer versions if they're no longer compiled for x86. You bought a dead-on-arrival Mac. If you want a gaming device, neither is a good option anyway.
I mean, congratulations on the upgrade and all, and I hope this was just too good of a deal to pass up, but don't mislead others that this was the better choice.
To be fair, there are a lot more positives to Apple Silicon. But I agree with you, people have blown out of proportion how good M1 is. I had a 2019 16” for a while, and loved it. Downgraded to a 2015 MacBook Pro because of the portability and much better battery life than the 2019 16”. Enjoy your new Mac OP!
Did you really just say that a 16" 2019 isn't better than a 2017 Air, thats just factually incorrect. No one thinks Intel is better than Apple Silicon, there's no need to lie.
Intel Macs absolutely suck ass but ok lol and they aren’t going to be able to update it any further. Huge waste of money in my opinion.
The Intel Macs are so cheap. It’s literally worthless because of software support. You can buy a $4,000 intel i9 MacBook Pro for only $600 now. Also MacBook Pro intel toasts your lap under heavy tasks while it stays cooler on a M series Mac without hearing the fan scream at you.
$600 for an i9 MBP is still absolute robbery and a complete waste of money.
I don't even need to read the comments to know gale force winds are being created from people shaking their head all over the world. If you can still return the 2019 Intel do so immediately and get an M1 Air. Its an incredible machine. I still have a max spec processor 16/512 2019 intel machine and its painful to use compared to my M1 and its even difficult to tell the difference between my M1 and M4 for casual day to day use the M1 is that good. For future reference do about 3 minutes of research before buying a new computer.
Uugghh people buying Intel Macs now just doesn’t make sense to me. M1 would have been minimally more and significantly better.
I just got a macbook air 15" and it's the first mac I've had in years. My eyesight isn't the best and I'm finding that the text size is too small for me to be able to work at the computer comfortably.
Is there a way I can get larger text across all apps, or does this have something to with the display on this model in particular. Does text appear larger by default on the 13" air?
What I've tried so far:
Adjusting the text size in accessibility. - This doesn't really seem to work. It increases text size in the finder, but it remains tiny in various apps I'm using. For example, I use the chat app beeper, and in that app I can't read text without straining my eyes. I checked for font size settings in the app, but there are none. Are developers able to create font size options in the settings for their apps in Mac OS or is this something that can only be adjusted through system settings?
Changing resolutions. - If I change the resolution to the very lowest resolution option 960x600, I can read text comfortably on the screen, even in Beeper. But doing this creates other problems: windows get larger and don't fit on the screen.
Also, does it even make sense to use a system with a native resolution of 1710x1107 at so much lower of a resolution? Isn't that going to reduce my picture quality overall?
have you tried resolutions between that low resolution and the default? That seems like the best solution for your problem. The default is too small and 960x600 is too big. You might need to click on “Show all resolutions” to see all of your options.
Yes that’s what I ended up doing, I picked a resolution in between. Overall, it seems to be working for most apps, but there are still some apps I realize I’m not going to be able to use on Mac. These are apps like Beeper where the developer has not included any options for font size adjustment in the app itself. I tried everything I could think of but I found no way to make the text bigger. Not even zoom works. The text just remains the same tiny size.
You might be able to setup a pair of Shortcut scripts to switch to higher resolution and to switch back when you run that app.
That Mac OS 15 can be installed…
How did you get it working I have a MacBook Pro 2016 touchbar and tried to get it working but got the Apple website and a no start up screen
That is some heavy coolaid you have got there to not see obvious hindering of new MacOS compared to original by weak GPU and dual core. But good find still
Tell me about opencore patcher
In have the same age machine and absolutely agree with your assessment of incredibly 🫡 installing them ssd years back gave out a new life too.
Probably a reason why it was in there;
Wouldn't suggest using it as a daily driver, I think by this point its probably due retirement. Also one of the bullet points above is probably hitting the thing you're waiting for. I'm thinking its the EoL of it.
35W TDP, 2 cores 4 threads fyi. Don't worry, it won't be a daily driver. I've actually had it sitting at home for a year but since my Zephyrus G15 is in repair I've pulled this out as a cool 1 week challenge to try and live with the thing. I put in 8GB of RAM and a 512GB Samsung Evo SSD. Not too shabby.
The thing I was waiting for was MacOS Sequoia being installed in the screenshot. Opencore Patcher.
Even coming from a Zephyrus G15 I don't feel limited using this thing. You may call it EoL but I still see plenty of potential in this old thing. Will be a fun week
Fun fact: even though Apple officially says it isn’t supported, you can actually install two 8GB RAM modules in this model, and it runs even better.
I had a similar experience with the same machine, a cousin on my father's side didn’t need it anymore, while a cousin on my mother's side was just starting college to study graphic design. It felt like the sensible thing to do, so I replaced the battery, installed a brand-new SSD, and upgraded the RAM. She was thrilled, and it saved her from spending a thousand or more on a brand-new laptop just to test out the Apple ecosystem. Honestly, people today get too caught up in chasing the latest tech, when hardware that’s only a few years old can still perform pretty good for most needs.
I installed the highest version of adobe suite that was supported by the OS, finding those was a bit tricky but I did that because I didn't know if the OCLP route would be stable enough, has it worked fine for you?
Dude. So freaking weird. You have an old mbp and your daily driver is a G15 ... I have an old mba and my daily driver is a G14. It's such a silly coincidence that your backup laptop is the better version of my backup from the same era, and your primary is the bigger version of my primary.
Open core legacy patcher for the win 👏
.... "for some people" (caveat)
I think the VPN you're using is not letting you use yr wifi. Try to turn yr vpn off and also yr DNS. Then check yr wifi
That makes sense. It's Blokada. I have it installed in a few other devices and only been having problems with this phone in the last couple days. Something probably updated in a blocklist or DNS. Turned off the DNS and going from there. Thanks.
