What Redditors are Saying

MacBook vs. Windows Laptop Longevity

TL;DR MacBooks generally have a reputation for lasting longer due to their build quality, integrated hardware-software ecosystem, and consistent performance over time. However, premium Windows laptops with similar price points can offer comparable longevity.

Build Quality and Design

MacBooks are often praised for their superior build quality compared to many Windows laptops. Apple's focus on high-quality materials and design contributes to the durability and longevity of their devices [1:3]. The aluminum chassis of MacBooks tends to hold up better over time than the plastic bodies found in many budget Windows laptops [4:1]. However, premium Windows laptops like the Dell XPS or Microsoft Surface also offer excellent build quality, which can rival that of MacBooks [1:6].

Hardware and Software Integration

One advantage of MacBooks is the tight integration between hardware and software, as both are designed by Apple. This allows for optimized performance and stability, which can contribute to a longer lifespan [2:2]. In contrast, Windows laptops often feature components from multiple manufacturers, which can sometimes lead to compatibility issues and driver problems [2:5].

Performance Over Time

MacBooks are known for maintaining their performance over time, with macOS being less prone to slowdowns compared to Windows [3:1]. Users report that even older MacBooks continue to perform well for basic tasks like web browsing and word processing [4:4]. On the other hand, Windows laptops can experience "software rot" where performance degrades over time due to accumulated updates and background processes [3:1].

Price and Value

The perception of MacBooks lasting longer is partly due to their higher initial cost, which often leads to comparisons with lower-priced Windows laptops [5:3]. Premium Windows laptops that match MacBook prices, such as ThinkPads or Zenbooks, can offer similar longevity and performance [5:3]. For users who prioritize battery life and portability, the M1 and M2 MacBooks are highly recommended due to their efficiency and long battery life [3:8].

Use Case Considerations

For users focused on gaming, Windows laptops may be more suitable due to better support for gaming hardware and software [5:6]. However, for tasks like music production or design work, MacBooks are often favored for their stability and application support [4:9]. Ultimately, the choice between MacBooks and Windows laptops should consider individual needs, budget, and preferred operating system environment.

From my experience, any Windows laptop I've owned has either broken or become incredibly slow at around the 2 year mark. I've had my Macbook (Pro 13" 2017) for 3 years now and find it works more or less just as well as when I bought it. Other people I know seem to have had the same experience.

I should mention that the windows laptops I owned were in the range of £400-500, so not half as expensive as my Macbook. Has anybody had different experiences with comparably priced Windows laptops?

It's a mixed bag. I've had more major hardware failures with Macbooks than I ever had with anything else, from a 2012 MBP with a GPU failure, a 2015 MBP with another GPU failure and screen de-lamination, to a 2018 MBP with keyboard and battery expansion issues. On the other hand, build quality is otherwise exceptional and allows the rest of the machine to last longer than the parts bin plastic junk you generally find from the Windows competitors. I haven't ever had a snapped USB or broken charging port with a Mac.

They're sort of like Mercedes Benz. They're built better, will last longer, but when they do break it'll hurt.

That’s one thing I really hate with Apple devices. Especially when buying the latest stuff, you never know when a weird defect will pop up. I know more people with an iPhone 7 that have had AudioIC issues than not. With windows and android devices, I’m not surprised when they have weird issues after a few years - but I expect a bit more from my premium Apple stuff.

First of all windows laptops are not welll built as macs. Macs are engineered in evey way to provide durability. Besides unlike windows Mac OS doesn't become sluggish over time. Even if there is a problem with the system , there is apple care.

I have a Desktop I built in 2012 that’s still going strong, running all of the latest and greatest. The difference here is that Apple picks high quality parts for you out of the box (usually), while in the commodity PC world you have to do the research to make the right decision. I mean, there are plenty of ancient PCs still running in companies around the world, used as servers and what not. They’re not all bad.

Business windows laptops tend to have long lifespans. It’s not in the manufacturers interest to cut corners on them. The prices also tend to be more inline with MacBooks.

I feel like if you had a more pricey Windows Laptop, it would have lasted the same amount of time as the Mac.

I do think Mac build quality is awesome, but I do believe that a lot of it is in peoples heads.

Apple laptops are currently 1,000+ dollars new and a Windows Laptop priced in the same range would probably last that long as well. The thing is though, most people don't spend that much on Windows Laptops because there is usually a cheaper one with better specs. Just a thought.

Dell and Microsoft have entered the chat.

I’d love to buy a premium windows laptop, but I’ve seen both XPS’ and Surfaces have really bad issues, like many MacBooks have. Sadly, they’re mostly undocumented and can’t be addressed as easily as a Mac (eg. With GPU issues) without spending a lot of time or money on it

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 4 years ago

Definitely true, a device like the XPS can last you plenty long, but they are more expensive compared to other Windows laptops with the same specs. The thing about the issues is also true, because Apple only makes a few computers vs all the Windows laptops on the market.

To be quite fair, you'd have better experiences with more premium windows machines as well.

I have a $700 Samsung Ultrabook I bought in 2012 that is still working great. I installed an SSD and some extra RAM a few years back, but it would still be doing fine regardless. I used it for my job, through grad school, and over the last year it’s been a great schoolwork station for my son. I expected five good years, so I’m definitely getting my money’s worth.

Historically macs generally last longer than window pcs because the software and hardware both r made by apple. Especially with the recent switch to apple silicon where even the CPU/GPU in macs r now made by apple. Basically apple has total quality control on their macs.

The issue with window pcs r that different components r made by different companies. For example for a typical window gaming laptop like rog zephyrus g15. The CPU is by AMD, GPU by nividia, Asus which design the hardware like motherboard and thermal system around the CPU and GPU. And finally the software comes from Microsoft again a different company. See? Here u have different companies working on a single product so on a long term it’s easier for bugs like incompatibility issues to arise. Like window drivers incompatibility issues since the software and hardware r manufacture by different companies.

When Microsoft releases an window update they have to account for the myriad of different pcs/laptops out there since there r many different pc companies Asus, dell, HP, Lenovo all using the same software for different classes of pcs ranging from gaming ones to business/ casual ones. Microsoft also need to make sure window is able to take advantage of the various type of CPUs/GPUs made by Intel/AMD/Nividia. Basically it’s rly complicated. Furthermore these semi conductor companies won’t tell Microsoft the full detail of their silicon tech so I doubt window is able to squeeze every last drop of performance from the CPU/GPU.

But for apple? Simple just macs so it’s easier to maintain the quality and control bugs. Plus since the CPU/GPU r also designed by apple they can easily design the software to take full advantage of it. This is why u see why old macs r still able to run buttery smooth and still be used for casual task like office work. One of my friend is still using a 2006 MacBook Air till these day. Which is why I am amore than happy to splurge $5k on a MacBook but hesitate to spend it on a window laptop.

Btw the same can be said for android phone and iPhones too. This is why apple products can last so long.

Hardware has not typically been made by apple. The only custom hardware they’ve had recently is their own M1 line. Otherwise they’ve used the same off the shelf parts like all other windows laptops. Yes they have a few custom parts like the T2 chip in their intel laptops but those don’t make a huge difference in everyday stuff. PowerPC Mac’s might of been custom orders from IBM though. Also the MacBook Air didn’t exist in 2006, it released in 2008. Also those original MacBook airs were notoriously bad, had slow hard drives and were painfully slow. The main benefit that MacBooks benefit from is that from 2013 onwards all their laptops used SSDs instead of HDDs making them far better for everyday use plus they would not slow down overtime as more stuff is packed on them. I’ve used old windows laptops from 2008 and they work fine for standard internet browsing with its core 2 duo. The main problem is their very slow HDD that’s pinned at 100% most of the time making it unusable for around 5-10 minutes when it’s first turned on

My bad I type wrongly is 2008 MacBook Air. Yes while there macs had slow HDD making them boot slowly but once Mac OS is boot up, the mac works nicely. Just have to be patience.

Compare to a typical window laptop u have to admit the pc core components like CPU, GPU and Software which r the three main component in the spotlight, of a mac r designed by apple whereas for window pc the core components r made by different companies like AMD/intel/Nvidia/microsoft. Which could led to incompatibility issues. Since u always heard of this term “drivers issues”.

Ofc pc components like display/webcam/battery/some of the component on the motherboard aren’t design by apple but apple get to decide the arrangement of these component so u can say while off the shelf parts r used, ultimately apple still is the one who designed the mac hardware from the ground up.

Windows Vs Macbook Pro/Budget vs Longevity

Posted by Sid2987 · in r/SuggestALaptop · 3 years ago

I'm a lawyer so my usage doesn't go beyond drafting/reading and general browsing.

I have used windows all my life and I'm currently looking to switch but to Apple. In my experience and opinion windows laptop eventually start wearing out and I've been told Macbook is relatively better in terms on longevity. But there's a major difference in the price range as the macbook would cost me 40% extra as compared to windows. Is it really worth the budget?

Please advise me on this as I'm in two minds.

Secondary question: If I'm going for a Windows laptop which one would be better?

The perception of Apple lasting longer is a mix of 3 things. Hardware quality (Apple tends to use high quality components), OS speed (MacOS tends to remain speedy over time, windows is subject to 'rot') and windows quality (layering windows os and driver updates on top of each other over time tends to make windows seem less and less stable).

Hardware wise, any equivalent quality PC to a MacBook Pro should last just as long. ThinkPads especially the true business grade, for example, last forever.

Software wise, windows has gotten better at avoiding 'rot' and slowdown over time. And while kind of a big pain , wiping and reinstalling windows and apps can make an old windows laptop feel new again.

Bryanmsi89 · 1 year ago

Yeah, but two counter arguments:

  1. OpenCore Legacy allows MacOS updates to be added to older macs without tremendous trouble. Not ideal, but it extends the typical 5-7 year support timeline for MacOS quite a bit if someone wants it.
  2. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and dropped support for a ton of machines in the process. When it was released, this even cut off machines that were just a few years old. Yes, people could stick with Windows 10, but then again people can stick with older MacOS too so that's not a valid 'win' for Windows.

Apple generally supports all of its laptops for 5-7 years, including with firmware updates, driver updates, etc. Many Windows laptops stop getting updates from their makers after a few years. Yes, they still work, but they may no longer get BIOS updates or other fixes.

Not shilling for Apple, to be clear. But i do think its a lot more common to see someone still using a 10 year old Mac than it is to see someone using a 10 year old PC.

Yes and no. If u want longevity I’d say yes. Especially for ur light workload. I prefer the ui of macos for work and windows for everything else. But realistically a decent windows system will also last as long. If u want battery life then mostly MacBooks are still winning even with intels 12th gen efficiency chips. But realistically any windows system will work. If u decide windows I’d recommend getting one with a 12th gen efficiency chip for the rlly good battery life and stable performance. Then perhaps M1 MacBook Air, even refurbished might be a good option.

These new Apple processors are pretty fast and efficient, with an unparalleled battery life compared to almost any Windows laptop. It stays silent, cold, is thin and light, great keyboard, nice screen.

Heck, even just the trackpad would make it worth it over PCs', which aren't that great.

Why do Mac users keep their computers for so long?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/macbook · 3 years ago

Hi first time macbook owner here. I love my M1Pro 14 Inch MBP base model. But I grew up with Windows because I like gaming and didn't need battery life until recently.

This is not a completely serious question: Why do y'all keep you macbooks for so long? I see posts on here about 2010 Macbooks still being in use and it baffles me. Macs didn't have better hardware than windows laptops probably ever until the M1 chip. It's not like a 2010 Laptop Intel processor is magically better on a Macbook. What about the Macbook ecosystem makes it last longer? Is it because you don't game on macs therefore the gap in technology isn't as noticeable because you don't need a up to date chip for word processing? Or is it because everything is more expensive so you feel obligated to keep things longer? Help me understand. I'm a Psych Major and absolutely would love to write a paper on this just because.

>Why do y'all keep you macbooks for so long?

Because they cost a shit ton so you better use it for a long time. The other thing I would say is that, they also have nice feel to them. The parts don't wear out the same way. The chassis hold up really well. A lot of Windows laptop are made out of plastic and the cheaper ones are loaded with crapware.

Instead if you look at something like a Surface, you will find a lot of them old ones are still in use just like Macs. You oughta, with those prices on dem Surface, right? 😆

In theory, your Windows laptop should last longer than your Mac, because you aren't beholden to just Apple for OS support. Sure, you can use opencore or something, but Windows generally just work except for the latest Windows 11 with TPM requirement. Like opencore, the community stepped up and removed the TPM requirement too.

> What about the Macbook ecosystem makes it last longer? Is it because you don't game on macs therefore the gap in technology isn't as noticeable because you don't need a up to date chip for word processing?

Bingo. If all you do is basic web browsing, word processing and etc. Those thing will work on a 10-15 year old laptop if not older.

All of this makes sense, but if all you do is basic web browsing and word processing, wouldn't a budget Windows Laptop make more sense? Microsoft Office is by far the superior office suite and I would use Google Docs before I open up Pages any day of the week.

Well you can’t keep word processing on a budget laptop for that long though can you, i had a 400 dollar laptop before my m1 macbook air and after 5 years it started to struggle with even Microsoft word and youtube wouldn’t play at 1080p anymore. Its kinda like the amount of life you can get out of a device is proportional to the price

No. Most people would still choose apple technology. You can get MS Office for Mac ya know… Are you that naïve? Everyone knows it’s the better machine. Just accept it. You’re comparing a Ferrari to a Ford Focus and are so deeply concerned why everyone chooses the Ferrari. It’s well known common knowledge apple makes better devices. Period. People would much rather use apple if given the choice. You can keep asking questions as to why but that’s just how it is.

You could, but cheaper Windows laptop don't have the nice exquisite feel of Mac's. The creaky plastic, the shitty keyboard, the useless touchpad and the bloaty crapware infested Windows version these manufacturers put on them to make a quick buck.

Typing there is just fun and really nice. Whenever i have to type something that's longer than a few sentences, i swap away form my Desktop PC to my MacBook.

My MacBook is in my opinion the single best, most valueable tech-purchase i've ever made, and feels considerably better than my high-end gaming PC, that's almost tripple the price of that thing.

> My MacBook is in my opinion the single best, most valueable tech-purchase i've ever made, and feels considerably better than my high-end gaming PC, that's almost tripple the price of that thing.

I think that is the problem. You bought a high end gaming PC (I'm assuming laptop). Most of those gaming oriented ones has this cheap plastic futuristic look that is so cheesy and feels even worse. Get a Surface, and you get MacBook level experience on Windows. Of course, gaming on those isn't ideal though, but MacBooks (with Apple silicon) are even worse in this area.

I find the combo of MacBook or Surface with a desktop gaming rig is a pretty good solution. Especially now that we can use Magic Touchpads on Windows with the full gesture support, and Surface has excellent touchpads too. I'm just frankly saddened Apple went with ARM, because one of the biggest benefits of Mac's where the fact that I can still use Windows. You get the best of both worlds. I ran out and bought the 2019 MBP with Intel CPU and once that dies I might have to give up Mac's, unless something drastic changes with compatibility with Windows.

Don't get me wrong, Apple silicon is awesome. It just, I value compatibility more and dual functionality.

Do Macbooks really last longer than Windows laptops?

Posted by IncomeTotal4990 · in r/Tech_Philippines · 6 months ago

I've been trying to canvas for laptops in a while already for school since my current laptop (Acer) is very slow and its battery life doesnt last much.

As per the title, I am quite curious if macbooks do last longer than laptops since I'm thinking of going for an M1 (5 years since release) or an M2 (3-4 years since release) in consideration since there are newer laptops close to the former's price (like hp laptops at 35-36k). Can an M1 or M2 laptop outlast a 2024 laptop if I buy one this year?

I only plan to use the laptop mainly for school, some music/video streaming, and perhaps light gaming (like stardew valley). Is it worth it, or should I just buy a windows laptop? If ever Windows, may unit po ba kayo na masusuggest? Thanks!

edit: guys im a broke guy huhu thus i based the comparison on their respective prices :< i hope u guys can help me with that

Most Macbooks are flagship level devices, and majority of Windows laptop purchases are on the budget to midrange specs.

Walang pinagkaiba yan sa mga nagsasabi na "Ang ganda ng iPhone na 70k, 4 years wala parin lag, pero yung Android ko na tig 15k eh after 2years lang lag na." Malamang kasi it costs 5x more diba.

If you want laptops that have comparable build quality to Macbooks, then you have to find them at Macbook prices brand new din; Thinkpads, Zenbooks, Zbooks, Expertbooks, Zephyrus, etc.

That said, sobrang sulit ang Macbook Air M2 ngayon kasi unlike ibang laptop manufacturer na nag stop production ng models from last year, Apple continued production ng old models kaya bumaba presyo. The only issue with Macbooks is if pwede ba ss kanya or may useable alternative ba on MacOS para sa mga gusto mong programs na gamitin.

This is true. I'm still currently using a Legion laptop that I bought 6 years ago and it's still as fast as it was when I first bought it. It actually kinda makes it hard to justify an upgrade because it can still run modern games pretty decently. My sibling is still using the Acer laptop that we bought 8 years ago and the only damage that it had is because it was dropped from a relatively high height before.

And before that I was using a top of the line Sony Vaio for about 6 years until it broke because of an accident.

I will never ever buy a windows laptop again. I used to have the acer predator 15 na tumagal lang ng dalawang taon.

Reasons

  1. Speed when it comes to to apps I use (design)

  2. Weight - bigat ng windows laptop especially kung gaming tapos takaw eksena pa.

  3. Battery Life - eto talaga yung hinding hindi ko na kayang pag palit especially for someone na nag ta travel habang nag wowork. Kaya kong mag work mag hapon without plugging my macbook and same speed pa din sya. Kesa nung naka predator 15 ako wala pang isang oras wala nang battery and the speed was crap because naka power mode kineso.

Best investment kahit masakit sa bulsa.

OP if stardew valley ang main gaming consideration mo sa laptop, I strongly advise against getting a macbook

I bought an M1 during the pandemic planning on playing steam games kasi I keep hearing from friends na durable, mahaba battery life, happy sila sa purchase, etc. Tbh I barely use the macbook. Hirap brain ko mag-adjust sa mac after a long ass time of using windowd (lalo na sa office apps), and I ended up just buying Stardew and other games sa playstore and playing on my android tablet.

Pero if you can force your brain to adjust sa mac, baka pwede pa.

For work or school, go for an m2 with 16gb memory. And if kaya, at least 512gb ssd. 128gb is a no no. 256gb is ok basta most of your files ay nasa external hdd.

I have an m1 macbook pro with 8gb memory and 256gb ssd. Get an M1/m2 macbook air. Cheaper pero ok ang performance pa din.

But again, do not expect a lot kung maglalaro ka.

6 years, no issues: my MacBook has genuinely saved me money in the long run.

Posted by Maginaghat997 · in r/BuyItForLifeIndia · 2 months ago

After years of frustration with Windows laptops screen damage, keyboard failures, unresponsive touchpads, battery issues, and random slowdowns; I finally switched to a MacBook. And honestly, it’s been one of the most cost-saving decisions I’ve made.

I’m a heavy user. I often run 4–5 virtual machines at a time, and I rarely shut it down. Despite that, it still runs like new. The battery easily lasts all day, and performance has never let me down.

What I didn’t expect was how smoothly it plays with the open-source ecosystem. Tons of tools just work out of the box no tweaks, no issues.

Yeah, it costs more upfront, but looking back, it’s probably saved me way more than I spent. Anyone else here have a device that’s outlasted everything else?

Note: At work, I use an IBM ThinkPad workstation, and that’s been equally reliable.

The only issue I have with it is that it’s very expensive to repair. If the display goes bad, you can be asked to shell out 70-80% of the cost of the laptop. (Based on personal experience few years ago)

90% of the time the answer is repair and run it to the ground. That’s how apple products become worthy.

I changed my 2018 MacBook display for ₹60k last year (check my profile history). Now I’ll be changing the keyboard panel+battery. And run it for at least 2-3 years. So that’ll work out to a total of ₹26,500/annum over 10 years, which is cheaper than buying a new apple product every few years.

Why have my high-end PCs failed so quickly while my MacBook Pro keeps going strong?

Posted by Melior30 · in r/mac · 7 months ago

In November 2018, I purchased the Microsoft Surface Book Pro 2 for around $1,500. Initially, it was an incredible laptop—I loved the detachable screen, and it was fast, sleek, and aesthetically pleasing. However, its quality declined rapidly, and by February 2020, it had completely stopped working.

In May 2020, I bought the HP Spectre x360 for a little over $1,100. Initially, it was a great laptop—I loved the 2-in-1 design that allowed me to fold it into a tablet and take notes, and it was very portable. However, its quality also deteriorated quickly, and by March 2022, it completely stopped working.

Despite this, I decided to give the HP Spectre x360 another shot. In March 2022, I purchased the latest version for around $1,500, and it was significantly better in terms of speed and build quality. While it might seem odd to stick with the same model after my first experience, I attributed the earlier laptop's failure to my own mishandling rather than a flaw in the product.

With the newer model, I took far greater care: I installed protective bumpers for better airflow, used a protective shell for travel, and avoided overcharging the battery to preserve its health. Yet, despite all this, its quality also declined rapidly over time. Finally, in July 2023, it crashed completely and wouldn’t turn on.

Frustrated by the short lifespan of my high-end PCs, I decided to switch to the 2023 MacBook Pro, which I purchased for around $2,000. This transition coincided with a period when I needed a laptop for far more intense use, managing a wide range of work and personal projects. Nearly 1.5 years later, in January 2025, the MacBook Pro still performs almost as well as it did when I first bought it.

One common argument for MacBooks' longevity is the price: “hurr durr of course they last longer; a Mac costs $1.5K–$2.5K, while most PCs are $500.” However, I’ve owned three high-end PCs in the same price range as Macs, and they all failed quickly—the first after 1.25 years, the second after 1.83 years and the third after just 1.33 years. They showed noticeable performance deterioration after moderate to heavy use.

In contrast, my MacBook Pro has endured extremely intensive use—often running dozens of demanding applications for most of my waking hours—and still operates flawlessly.

Don’t get me wrong—there are aspects of my PCs that I genuinely preferred. I strongly prefer the Windows OS and often rely on Parallels to run Windows-specific applications on my Mac. I also miss the convenience of handwriting notes directly on my PC, which was a feature I used frequently. However, despite these advantages, I simply cannot justify returning to PCs due to their consistently short and frustratingly unreliable lifespan.

What explains this? Why has my Mac lasted so much longer?

If you take apart a mac and look at the motherboard, the attention to detail and quality of soldering of the components are phenomenal.

PC motherboards in comparison are horrifically bad, other than the higher end gaming mobos.

So for the same specs, macs are simply built better.

When jobs and woz were binding the first macs in their garage, jobs made it a point to make the motherboards beautiful. That ethos and qc has lived on to now.

Apple's manufacturing process also ensures that what they prototype is what gets built. Apple has the same machines as the factories in China. PC manufactures do not have the same level of manufacturing detail, and it shows in the longevity, even when Apple was using Intel.

My late 2013 MBP is at a point where I can’t update the software ( unless I use OCLP), but it’s in great shape. The newer Macs are not as easily upgradable so I don’t imagine they’ll last quite as long, but you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. I’m still running original battery and the hard drive is fine, but I’m currently running it off an external SSD which has more space than the original drive. Battery is your biggest enemy in terms of longevity. Once it’s out of production, you can’t find original Apple batteries anymore so you’ll be forced to use aftermarket.

whats the average lifespan? And real life battery expectations?

get at least 16gb ram and as much storage as you can afford and it will easily last you years to come

I think the most sensitive points are price and ecosystem though.

Apple likes money. They are also quite successful in making it. People still view Windows as the more budget friendly option, with IT folks perhaps sidestepping to Linux if they like working with coding/computers a lot. Windows and Linux are pretty much interchangeable for x86 machines, although with more ARM options popping up that may change someday. The most passionate of these people also don't like their closed hardware ecosystem, e.g. no SSD or RAM upgrades after purchase, and little support to run any other OS on Apple hardware. However that's also getting more common on Windows PCs, e.g. look at Qualcomm machines.

Besides I often build my machines with storage/RAM "for life" because I already don't run low-spec stuff, so 5 years down the line its a lot more probable that I will replace the whole machine instead of spending 300$ on a larger RAM kit. Its often not worth it IMO.

So I agree, there is a reason why Apple is killing it. Their industrial design sets a high standard, and they deliberately choose not to sell trash hardware in their machines to kill their brand appeal ("the budget option"). Even though you can get a very capable Mac Mini for a few hundred $ these days. But if you're a power user, better pay the big $$$ for all the upgrades.

I'd list value and repairability as two of the essentials, and Apple fails hard on both compared to alternatives.

When I say depends on use-case, consider this.

As a software developer, I can easily say that yes MacBooks are because no other platform can target iOS and macOS development. Windows might be able to make development builds for Maui but to release them to the stores, you need a Mac.

As a gamer, I can easily say that Windows laptops are better for obvious reasons.

I don’t game much anymore so the first scenario is what fits me best.

Agreed. If we're talking casual use for someone who just wants to go online or watch movies/play music, the Air is my #1 recommendation. There are a lot of people who can't afford one or can't justify the price, though. That's always an issue, because they can also go online and watch movies/play music on a $400 entry level laptop.

What is a normal user ? But from experience, it doesn't really matter.

Now people will have specifics needs like gaming, photo editing or a few other and that will determine what platform to prefer.

And if you don't have much money, I'd avocate that Mac isn't particularly great.

MacBook vs. Windows laptop longevity

Key Considerations for Longevity:

  1. Build Quality:

    • MacBooks are known for their premium build quality, often using aluminum chassis which can withstand wear and tear better than many plastic Windows laptops.
    • Windows laptops vary widely in build quality; high-end models (like Dell XPS or Lenovo ThinkPad) can match MacBooks, while budget models may not be as durable.
  2. Operating System Updates:

    • MacBooks receive consistent macOS updates for several years (typically around 7-8 years), ensuring security and performance improvements.
    • Windows laptops also receive updates, but the longevity of support can vary based on the manufacturer and model, often around 4-5 years for mainstream devices.
  3. Hardware Compatibility:

    • MacBooks have optimized hardware and software integration, which can lead to better performance over time.
    • Windows laptops can have varying hardware configurations, which may affect performance and compatibility with future software updates.
  4. Repairability:

    • MacBooks are often harder to repair due to their design, which can lead to higher repair costs if something goes wrong.
    • Windows laptops can be easier to repair or upgrade, especially models designed for business use.
  5. Battery Life:

    • MacBooks generally have excellent battery management and longevity, often lasting longer on a single charge compared to many Windows laptops.
    • Windows laptops vary widely in battery performance, with some high-end models offering competitive battery life.

Takeaways:

  • MacBooks tend to have a longer overall lifespan due to build quality, software support, and battery management.
  • High-end Windows laptops can also offer good longevity, but you need to choose carefully based on build quality and manufacturer support.

Recommendation: If longevity is your primary concern and you're willing to invest, a MacBook is a solid choice. However, if you prefer Windows, look for premium models from reputable brands that offer good support and build quality.
