Comparison Between Persona 3 and Persona 4

Tone and Atmosphere

Persona 3 is often described as having a darker, grittier tone compared to Persona 4. The story in Persona 3 deals with themes of mortality and existential dread, which some players find compelling but others consider depressing [2:1]. In contrast, Persona 4 has a lighter, more upbeat atmosphere, focusing on the lives of normal teenagers dealing with everyday problems, which many players find relatable and enjoyable [1:4][2:4].

Story and Characters

The storytelling approach in Persona 3 involves long-term character progression without immediate social links for most of the cast, leading to a strong payoff in the last third of the game [1:3]. Persona 4, however, is praised for its engaging cast and well-developed social links, although some characters' stories might seem far-fetched [1:7]. Players have mixed opinions about which game has the better story, with some preferring the depth of Persona 3's narrative while others enjoy the plot and character dynamics of Persona 4 [3:2][4:1].

Gameplay and Mechanics

Both games are considered less refined in terms of gameplay mechanics compared to Persona 5, with simpler dungeon designs and less smooth difficulty curves [2:3][4:4]. Persona 3's Tartarus can be repetitive, whereas Persona 4 offers more variety in dungeon aesthetics and themes [3:4][4:5]. Despite these limitations, both games offer unique experiences that contribute to their charm.

Social Links and Side Characters

Persona 4 is often praised for its social links and side characters, such as the Dojimas, which many players find memorable [5:1]. Persona 3 also has notable side characters, like the sick dude and the little girl, who add depth to the game's narrative [5:2]. Both games have their strengths in character development, though opinions vary on which game handles it better [5:4].

Overall Reception

While both Persona 3 and Persona 4 are highly regarded, players tend to have personal preferences based on their tastes in story, tone, and character development. Some players rank Persona 3 higher due to its impactful story and mood, while others prefer Persona 4 for its engaging cast and lighter atmosphere [4:1][5:3]. Ultimately, both games are worth playing for fans of the series, offering distinct experiences that cater to different interests.

And Persona 5 seems to have a balanced tone compared to the two; there are a few dark moments that harken back to Persona 3 (i.e., the Fourth Palace) while there's also plenty of light-hearted and heartfelt moments to be had like in Persona 4, too (i.e., going to the church with Yusuke, maxing out Sojiro's Confidant, the entirety of Futaba's Confidant, etc.)

IMO, Persona 3 has the best story because they didn't give most the cast immediate social links and half don't even get one, meaning actual story long character progression. Waiting for moon story bosses is also a straight better system then timed dungeons. Much worse pacing then 4 tho, and a horribly slow UI. It's story is very last 30% focused, so it's the slowest game, the shortest game but has the best payoff.

Persona 4 has the best cast. They're just great. Better overall social links and way better UI for em, but less variety. Fuck Chie's Golden English VA tho.

Persona 5 is the worst of all worlds. Weak cast, weakest social links, incredibly weak story thats basically a worse Persona 4. It's game design is also easily the worst in the series and the social link changes were horrible decisions. The best character is the lol so random gamer girl and even she's C tier. Hot tho.

I love the P4 cast. I think the fact they were all (well, mostly) normal teenagers with normal problems is what makes it my favorite Persona game, and one of my favorite JRPGs of all time.

That's what I said mostly.

I gotta say, though, even if Naoto's and Rise's stories were more far-fetched, they still had a somewhat realistic vibe to them. Rise's insecurities and pressures seemed like those a teen pop idol would actually face.

Teddie... well, I mean, they clearly weren't going for realism there. But considering Teddie was the joke character, I think they did a very remarkable job of giving him a multi-layered personality and insecurities. The token joke character in JRPGs usually doesn't get anything besides the funny one-liners.

Persona 4s story in a nutshell.

Opening and Yusk: Shits bad mk and random as fok.

Chikuko's dungeon: Shits gay as fok and we don't know shit.

Katakana's dungeon: Shits gayer as fok and starting to become really obvious.

Rie Kugimiya and Doraemon's dungeon: Theeeeres the fanservice and I think these characters might be retarded.

Gamers rise up dungeon: Did anyone actually think he was the killer?

Kuzunoha's Dungeon: "Ima just state what was obvious the last 40 hours and your gonna call me a genius"

Loli, age difference, ugly bastard's dungeon: Did anyone actually think he was the killer round 2.

The only guy left in the story without a social link's dungeon: The story is rapidly becoming incredibly contrived.

Predictable final god boss: Wow, an actual unexpected twist, shoved with endless bullshit.

SIB Persona 3 or Persona 4

I recently finished persona 5, and I'm looking forward to playing the previous iterations. It's the middle of summer, and I'm thinking of picking up a persona game while I'm at it. I loved everything about persona 5, just curious about what the community thinks I should buy between these two persona games.

Edit: Decided to go with Persona 3 first, thanks for the suggestions!

Both P3 and P4 have really good stories, however it might be hard going backwards gameplay-wise. The dungeons are a lot less interesting and I found the difficulty curve to not be as smooth as P5.

Both 3 and 4 are great games since you are on ps3 I suggest getting P3 FES. FES is the best way to experience p3 added content that weren't in the game originally. P4 on ps3 is only the base game( still great). Either way both are great games

I suggest P4 because it feels light and fun. Also, I like the plot better. On the other hand, P3 is a darker themed game. It is kinda depressing for my taste. Anyway, both games great and you won't regret buying which ever you choose.

I just finished Persona 3 Reaload...

Posted by Beautiful-Fudge6981 · in r/JRPG · 7 months ago

So, I just finished the P3R base game (don't have the DLC yet, but I guess I'll pick it up soon).

My first Persona title was P5 back in 2017 or so and then Royal on steam. I picked up P3R because I liked the looks of it and thought I'd probably give it a shot at some point.

I know this might be a hot one, but P3R, at least to me, is soo much better than P5/P5R... The art-syle (UI-elements and such) are better in P5R tho, everything beyond that is inferior. P3R has better writing, better Characters and for the love of it, better confidants, or Social Links, as they are called in P3R. I also like the score better, but that is highly depending on the individual.

P5/P5R overstayed it's welcome imo. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the best JRPGs out there, but I think a lot of people are blinded by it's fancy visuals. It has too many palaces that don't mean anything and even the main cast, namely Makoto and Haru, are of no real relevance shortly after their introduction, were as in P3R, even the most faceless of classmates leave lasting impressions.

P3R has a very tedious story introduction, but once it's ramped up, it's the best writing you can get. I admittedly played through the game following a schedule guide, to get most of the game. It basically just told me what to do at any given day, spoiler free, oc. I'd recommend this to everyone tbh. It might sound stupid, but there is so many things you can miss, that have severe impact on your impression of the game during the ending. And these games are, as you know, already very long.

I firmly believe that everyone who says P5/P5R was better, simply hasn't played P3R yet.

The last time I felt what I felt after beating the game, was when I finished Crisis Crore.

PS: I don't mean to offend anyone with my opinion. I still love P5/P5R and if you like P5/P5R better, be my guest. But hell, you should give P3R a shot guys...

I got my start with P3P years ago, then moved on to P4G, then P5. As much as the games get better to play with each iteration, nothing has that MOOD the way that P3 did. This felt like the last push of the dark edginess of SMT influence before the games leant more into jpop happy times. All three of them are 10/10.

Original P5, I absolutely loved. At that time, it beat P3 in my personal rankings easily. But then later when P5R came out, replaying everything again was so dull. That soured my P5R experience a lot. I may have felt differently if I hadn't played original P5 and went into P5R directly

Then P3R came out and it easily regained its crown in my personal ranking. I don't know how to really explain it but P3R did just about everything better than both its own original and P5/P5R

(This is not counting the DLC episode of P3R. While story-wise it's solid, actually playing through it is a tedious slog)

I’m thinking of dropping P3R.

I’m just about to fight the Hanged Man boss after beating Strega, but I can’t say I’ve enjoyed much of it.

  • the characters are mainly unremarkable
  • the stories are boring
  • Tartarus is a slog

I’m 90 hours in and can’t get the motivation to play anymore. I was hoping Hanged Man was the last boss, but I’ve been told I’ve got about another 30% left of the game, which has put me right off.

I ended up disliking P3R greatly by the end. I finished it only to see this "amazing ending" that I had been told was coming. The game overstayed its welcome by a lot.

The actual gameplay loop is dated, and it showed. I was disappointed they didn't try updating it to better suit a modern audience that's become accustomed to the two games after it. I realize for many that's a plus, it's a faithful remake. For a new Persona audience who never played any of the P3s before it and lack any kind of nostalgia for it, it's a detractor.

My second problem is the lack of connecting tissue and motivations for a lot of the characters. Saying the confidents are better is interesting to me, most were entirely trivial to me and lent very little weight back into the main narrative. Not to mention the complete lack of any kind of social links with the people actually closest to you. Only getting four social links in your party was a huge bummer.

Personally I feel there was too little plot spread over too much game. You could say P5R has an entirely different problem, too much plot over too much game. Only one moment in the entire game really struck me with its emotional weight, >!Shinjiro getting murdered. It was handled well with plenty of lead up to it and character growth between the MC, Motoko, and Mitsuru. Then we get some mourning and what I had hoped was a deeper motivation for the team. Until it just resumes the monster of the month theme...!< Yukari's personal involvement with the overarching plot, which should be an even bigger motivator, manages to feel ham-fisted in. It's like they needed a character with a personal attachment to the goings on to make the story work, so they spun a wheel and chose Yukari.

The ending twist was whatever. Definitely not enough to justify all the praise for it.

Probably a lot of hot takes, and a lot will disagree. I think a decent game exists in P3R, but it was ultimately tarnished by rabid fans placing it on a pedestal, creating a lot of hype that it could never live up to.

Comprehensive comparative review of P4G, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 5 Royal

Posted by Funlife2003 · in r/PERSoNA · 5 months ago

So when it comes to Persona game comparisons are inevitable. And Just to rebut some common arguments of me being biased that'll be used here, I'll point out that I'm a newer fan who played the games in order i.e. Persona 3 first, then 4, then 5. So I think I'm in a pretty good position to avoid stuff like nostalgia bias and anchoring bias and all that when I say Persona 5 Royal is the best Persona game and frankly the only Persona I put in the 10/10 category amongst my favorite games. But I am of course interested in discussing this and I won't claim that everything I say is 100% objective though I'll try to be impartial. With that out of the way, let's get started.

UI: I started with this cause I do feel like it's an aspect of games that's overlooked, and so I want to highlight the absolute genius that is Persona 5's UI. The other two aren't particularly bad exactly, but man Persona 5's UI is a masterpiece. It pops, it's easy to use, it's consistent with a clear visual hierachy, and yeah I think that's enough of me shilling it, 10/10.

As for Persona 3 Reload and P4G, I slightly prefer P4G's UI, though it's a small difference. Let's just say P3R is a 8/10 and P4G is a 8.5/10.

Plot: Now just to preface this, I'll be making a distinction between plot and storytelling here, which is why I have separate categories. Now, in terms of plot, I agree with the consensus, Persona 3 takes it, though I don't think the difference is nearly as significant as people say it is. Persona 3 gets a 9/10 in terms of plot for me.

Now this part will get some pushback, but I honestly think Persona 4's plot is kinda mid. Which is strange cause conceptually it should be my favorite, a mystery oriented story with heavy slice of life elements and chill rural setting? It should've been my favorite. But it makes several missteps, which I feel are necessary to discuss. The mystery is not very well done, and the use of red herrings would be fine if they weren't so damn obvious. In good mysteries, the player/reader should be on pace with or slightly ahead of the protagonists, not lapping them ten times over. Plus there are some obvious plot holes and weaknesses. Now the common response here is that it's about the characters not the mystery and that.... well I'll get to that. But it does have a strong final part, so 7/10.

Persona 5 Royal plot is honestly underrated and overlooked, and I think it's cause it has wider and more general societal themes compared to 3 and 4 which are more focused, but that doesn't in any way make it inferior. It's exciting, it's moving, it's consistent, and the first part with the opening and Kamoshida is the best start of any persona game. Moreover the third semester, the final part, is close to the level of the final persona 3 part with Maruki being the best Persona villain of the 3. 8.5/10. It dips a bit in the middle, but it never feels as tiresome as parts of 3 and 4. Speaking of, I'll move on to the next.

Storytelling: This is the part which I feel a lot of fans of 3 and to some extent 4 overlook or undermine. Even said fans will acknowledge that Persona 3 takes a while to get going, and I agree and I say that as someone who liked it from the start. The pacing is simply not good. Now, I should note this is somewhat affected by the tedious gameplay, as Persona 3 does still use it's story more effectively than persona 4. But the pacing screws it over badly, kinda ridiculous to expect players to grind through a third of the game to get to the really good stuff. 7/10.

Persona 4 doesn't have the poor pacing of persona 3 or rather it doesn't to that extent, but it does have some poor storytelling. To illustrate this I'll bring up the school trip. P4's school trip is honestly kinda a waste of time that accomplishes nothing beyond showing the main cast goofing off and even then it doesn't really flesh much out or add to the dynamics. Compare it to Persona 3 which accomplishes so much in it's school trip that actually doesn't last much longer. Even P5 does a better job in it's school trip. 7.5/10.

Persona 5 meanwhile has some remarkably effective storytelling, with the best pacing of the 3, an excellent ludonarrative, an engaging hook, effective use of story time, and it sticks the landing with P5R's ending. Still some issues, but nothing as bad as the other two. 8/10.

Cast: Now this'll be a bit controversial, but well I'll start by splitting cast into two, main cast/playable cast, and side cast.

For the main cast, I think Persona 3 absolutely spanks the other two, yukari is my favorite of all the persona characters. Everyone here is good and well written which works cause the main cast is the focus. 5/5. As for P4, this is an unpopular opinion, but I think the main cast is kinda boring. Not poorly written, they're well written, but it doesn't do much with them, and them being total yes-men detracts from them, as does Teddie. 3.5/5. Persona 5 hits the middle ground of having more interesting characters, but not to the extent of Persona 3. I honestly think the main reason people like P4 more is cause we spend more time with them goofing around, but that doesn't make them better written. P5 gets a 4/5.

For the side cast, I do think P4G takes the cake. Adachi, the Dojimas, and several other great characters make this the best one. But there are a few I didn't like that much, bringing it down to a 4.5/5. Persona 5R comes in second at a 4/5 with several memorable social links with none of them being bad. And as much as I like it Persona 3 comes in last with a 3/5, genuinely can't remember most of them. So adding it up all 3 get an 8/10 for the cast.

OST: Frankly while I prefer the P5 OST most I can't say any of them are actually better or worse than the other, so let's just give them a 9/10 all around.

Gameplay: Yeah honestly not sure there's much of a discussion here, P5R absolutely smokes the rest. The way it all comes together is incredible, 9.5/10 for me.

P4G is, and this might be an unpopular opinion, worse than P3R gameplay wise. At least to me. A significant issue for me with P4G is A) the lack of teleport points like P3 or safe spots where you can save like P5, and also the healing thing with the fox felt unwieldy. P4G gets a 6.5/10, and P3R gets a 7/10.

Overall: So with all of the above as the basis, I feel like P5R simply is the best game of the three when you look at it as an overall package. You might prefer P3R for one reason or P4G for another, but neither of those two games are as complete as an overall package compared to P5R. In the end I rate P5R as a 10/10 game, P3R as a 9/10 game, and P4G as a 8/10 game. But of course, I'm open to discussions and critiques of this review.

Hmm, interesting. I do think the sick dude was well done if a little obvious, and the little girl one I remember liking but can't say it wowed me that much. Not saying it was bad but I do think the main strength of persona 3 is it's main cast, which works out since that's what the focus of the story is on. But I get what you mean, there are some good ones as well, and it's been a while so maybe it's better than I remember idk.

Tbh I think P5 is more consistent in its confidants as I can't really say any of them were weak, but I didn't love them as much as I loved say the Dojimas in P4. But P4 also has some really boring ones. So yeah I can see it the other way as well, which is why they're not too far apart in my rating.

Funlife2003 · OP · 5 months ago

Well one I find funny is the scene of the man in the fog, which genuinely makes no sense and is kinda laughable when you think about it. Like based on plot it should be Adachi, but the words and emotions expressed by the figure totally don't match him. They don't match Nanahime either. It's clear that Atlus basically added it for like the tension or intrigue or whatever, but it really is dumb. As for the rest well tbh when I said plot holes I meant more generally plot issues and asspulls, and there are several of those as well. Like Nanako resurrection is another obvious one that's an asspull. I like Nanako as a character, but the way the handled he'd return was so bad I couldn't even feel anything about her return. There's other stuff like this, but I'll have to confirm some of them since I'm going off of memory here.

Are social links significantly harder to manage compared to P5R?

Posted by phanzov36 · in r/persona4golden · 8 months ago

I'm playing my NG+ playthrough after not getting the true ending in my first attempt. Even with my better understanding of the cadence of the game, I feel overwhelmed by the time and effort social links require in this game.

Adachi not having set days and being both a day and night link, multiple party members requiring a separate convo before you can form a link, other pretty obscure requirements or unexpected deadlines, these things have made it really hard as someone who prefers to not use walkthroughs.

I don't know if it's a translation issue but the toughest challenge once I formed a link is that it's not clear to me what prompts are best based on the options provided and the character's personality. And even when I have the right Persona with me, I'm always seemingly not ready to progress with certain links.

It seems like you need to almost completely focus on links to try and complete them, or use a guide. With P5R, I rarely needed a guide besides for fusions or some small side quest related items. I do agree that some parts of 5 do seem a bit too easy but for someone who likes to complete major parts of games like this (even if not "necessary" to beat it), the experience of 4 has been a bit exhausting.

I would say yes to significantly. It isn't even subjective. It objectively is more difficult. You have fewer free time slots and there are more hoops to jump through to unlock some of them. P5 has the latter, but not as many and not to the extent of P4.

Do you recall if anyone besides Ai has a lot of trickery to romance, or multiple steps to do so? I remember in P5R I messed up a few romances because I didn't realize I was being tested at rank 5 lol.

Romance wise, no. P5R put some steps in for the adults to be romanced. P3R then expanded and gave them to everyone in a way that if you don't trigger them you won't even have to turn them down at rank nine.

Oh, Naoto. I almost pressed comment and remembered Naoto. Naoto has things that need to be done as well.

P5R I think has a 10/9 split of confidants for day and night, In P4G I think the split is 14.5/4.5. Plus you can further increase the bond in P5R with the call after you rank up.

I just barely maxed out all Social Links without a guide on my first blind playthrough. It's definitely possible but yes it does feel harder than P5R.

The only things I knew was that Adachi and Marie were pretty important. I like to optimize, so as soon as I met the SLs, I kept a mental note about when they're available + I did every dungeon on the first day except for 1. Doing all this on Very Hard Mode was well, extremely difficult at first, but as soon as the dungeon grind is over, prioritize the knowledge stat.

It's not well known, at least I don't think, but besides gaining extra School SL points from doing well on an exam, you also get a hidden multiplier boost until the next exam. Prioritize the school SLs especially. P5R lets you do any SL, even outside of school besides Maruki iirc, so you could do them even during summer vacation unlike in P3 or P4.

Besides that, try and do the fox's quests asap and speak to him on rainy days or whenever you have free time. Also unlike P5R, you're not able to tell whenever you're ready for the next level, so it's more of a save and reload type of deal. I eventually used an answers guide to look at to confirm if the answer I'm using is the best one. Usually was, but there were times there was a better answer and the answer guide simply saved me time.

I hope this helps you out! Good luck!!

I think p3 and p4 are way harder to max out social links and social stats without a guide and I’m pretty sure that’s the general consensus as well

P4G is harder then P5 in my opinion but I think it’s partly because this was only the second time the devs were making a game with this system (like 4th or 5th counting rereleases and special version that came before it) so they still didn’t have the best idea of how to balance everything. That being said it is still possible to max them all in a single run without ng+ but it’s really hard. Since you’re on NG+ I’d recommend an answer guide if you’re struggling with responses, the megamitensai wiki has separate pages for each characters social link that lists the responses for each dialogue choice you’ll just want to look for “insert character/social link” on the wiki.

Yeah, I'm a bit stubborn when it comes to using guides when it's not absolutely necessary like for fusions or to figure something the game gives no clues about (like which NPC unlocks which link).

But I did do a little digging and it looks like as long as I take care of Adachi and Marie, I'll have more story time to work with

Did this Game do alot of things right or wrong?

Posted by Qewey01 · in r/persona3reload · 4 months ago

Trust me, ever since I've owned the original FES I have loved P3 as my favorite Persona game despite it's flaws that P4 fixes.

I was excited to see it get a remake and I have played a decent bit of it, but I found that even though the Combat was more modernized the rest of the game felt like Atlus was taking a step backwards in terms of Game Design. (For example the Social Links not having a new mechanic like P4 and P5, I like that they are fully VA'd but that alone doesn't save the boring moments.)

So I have a genuine question, did this Game do alot of things right or wrong in your perspective? What did it do right for you, what did it do wrong?

What i noticed is that P3R isn't a faithful remake, and i don't think that Atlus were planning to since the beginning. This remake was made with Persona 5 fans and the modern audience in mind, many P3's distinct gameplay was abandoned completely not refined, in favour of making the game closer to P5.

I think reload was extremely faithful. I would have preferred the original voice cast and soundtrack of course, but after several playthroughs of 3 I found most of the game was pretty close to the original design wise.

If you actually played the original, then you would instantly noticed a lot of P3's distinct gameplay was removed, such as Tactics mechanic being abandoned, fatigue system gone, ability to use various weapon gone, etc. mechanics that makes P3 style of gameplay different to other modern Persona games. Instead Atlus copy and pasted baton pass without balancing it and just call it a day, that alone is enough to make Persona 3 plays and feels the same just like Persona 5. I'd suggest you play the original again if you forget how P3 was different.

P3R might work for the modern audience like you, but not for me.

Lmao this is just a braindead take. What about it isnt faithful lmao. Its like 80% the same game with new additions and minor dialogue tweaks. Same characters, story, tone, mood, gameplay, design, etc. you can name all the things different, you would run out of time naming eveeything that was kept the same

Tactics mechanic abandoned, fatigue system gone, ability to use various weapon gone, fusion spell got dumbed down, just to name a few. Gameplay that makes P3 distinct from the other persona games. I know it's a lot for Persona fans like you, but I'd suggest you play the original version first.

I think it was modernized in the right areas. They had to walk the balance of honoring the original while bringing it up to modern standards, and aspects like giving you control over your party member decisions and Dyad Fusion in the Velvet room went a long way on their own. Social Links not having perks the same way P4 and P5 did might feel like a step back, but because those perks are made available through other avenues, it's not like they're not there at all, and it places more emphasis on the Arcana Burst each link provides as well as their individual stories, while also serving to ensure you're getting a different experience from 4 and 5.

Imo the social link perks/skills made 4&5 too easy, cool though

I think they were a cool way of further diversifying the links and allowing room to prioritize some over others depending on which skills they want more.

A lot right, some things wrong. I personally despise the remixed portion of the soundtrack. Fuuka is better voiced, imo Yukari is worse.

P3 is my all time favorite game, and I was really happy with reload. I miss some things from FES, some of the old school charm, but they honored a great game pretty well. It was emotional for me playing through it all over again after 15 years of loving this game and it introduced me to SMT as a whole

A lot of things right, and an admirable "we made and stuck to certain decisions" attitude about stuff that was never gonna please everybody. It's a lovely way to experience P3 for ppl who were never gonna sit through a 2006 version where you had to trust the AI team mates. If you're in an online discussion a lot of original fans can tell you ways they think it doesn't live up to the original, but most new players are gonna prefer the quality of life of the new one

Atlus missed out not releasing a FeMC tho but here we are

Old player here who started with original amd I have to say I'm on the fence. I play original if I feel like Nostalgia and atmosphere or I'll go for reload if I'm craving the game but want to enjoy the updated gameplay/visuals.

Vanilla 3 was the first Persona game that hooked me despite renting both 1 and 2 prior.

That being said... I love Reload. I didn't need it to be a truly faithful remake. It made it a little fresh.

I will say, I like the story for p3 a lot more, but the dungeons sections can be a bit of a bitch to get through if you your newer to the series.

A bit controversial, but if you want real growth of your characters in the overall story, p3 is the answer.

3 if you want well written characters and serious themes that are handled decently well. The gameplay is a bit more dated but it's not really that different. Just expect a bit of a slow burn story.

As someone who thinks that P3 is better, P4 is clearly the most welcoming for first timers.

Eh, I'd say Persona 4.

Persona 4's story is much better-paced than Persona 3. Once Persona 4 starts its mystery, it keeps on it and it gives enough clues and revelations to keep your attention. Meanwhile, Persona 3 does nothing for the first 2 months(in-game if that needs to be stated), then it starts teasing something but then drops it for another 2 months, before picking it back up.

Persona 4 is also, expectedly, much better in gameplay. Persona 4 manages to make its dungeons feel different and occasionally it throws the odd puzzle at you(also there are only 69 floors in Persona 4). Meanwhile, Persona 3 gives you 263 mandatory floors of the same thing with frequent barriers toward progression and clunky movement and attacking(outside of battle).

Also, Persona 4 has more things to do outside of battle. Something that Persona 3 is lacking in.

And lastly, Persona 4 is much less serious most of the time, compared to Persona 3. I think nothing shows this better than the openings of the games. Persona 4's Opening & Persona 4 Golden's Opening. Contrasted by Persona 3's Opening and Persona 3 Portable's Opening If you want a more serious tone, than you'll probably enjoy Persona 3 more.

Persona 3 vs Persona 4

Posted by [deleted] · in r/vita · 7 years ago

I have just finished Persona 3 on Vita and was amazed at how awesome that game was, many people recommended Persona 4 for the Vita but I think Persona 3 is so much better! (story and character design at least). The dubbing on P3 is much better and less cringey than P4 too. P4 is an amazing game don't take it the wrong way, I am just amazed that people don't recommend P3 more. What are your thoughts P3 or P4 or both?

I feel P4G is good since it's on handheld device, graphics is pretty good, also there is a lot of quality of life stuff there. Going from P4G to P3P was a lot harder than P5 to P4G. Let's face it P3P is dated in many ways, including both graphics and gameplay. It's kinda hard for me to enjoy the story, but struggle throw actual gameplay.

Kanji is one of the best designed characters I've ever seen in a JRPG. He feels human in his conflicts and inner turmoil. Good as it is, nothing in p3 even comes close.

Played 40 hours of P3P, reached major plot twist (currently in block 5 Tartarus) and then decided I wanted to start P4G. Now I am 45 hours into P4G and wanted to pick up P3P again and I found it quite difficult. My verdict is that P3P is a lot more challenging and grindy when compared to P4, and the it’s weird having to play with one stick again, instead of two. (I own P3 on PSP) Dungeons are a lot less vibrant as well... etc. I also find P4 characters a lot more lively and interesting than P3.

Comparison between Persona 3 and Persona 4

Key Considerations for Comparing Persona 3 and Persona 4

  1. Story and Themes:

    • Persona 3: Focuses on themes of mortality, the nature of death, and the impact of social connections. The story revolves around a group of students who fight Shadows during the Dark Hour, a hidden time between days.
    • Persona 4: Centers on themes of identity, truth, and the importance of community. The narrative follows a group of friends investigating a series of murders in the rural town of Inaba, exploring the concept of facing one's true self.
  2. Gameplay Mechanics:

    • Persona 3: Introduces the concept of the "Social Link" system and features a more structured day-night cycle. The combat system is turn-based, and players can control only the protagonist in battle, while AI controls other party members.
    • Persona 4: Builds on the mechanics of Persona 3 but allows players to control all party members in battle, providing more strategic options. The game also emphasizes social interactions and character development through the Social Link system.
  3. Visual and Audio Design:

    • Persona 3: Has a darker, more somber aesthetic, with a soundtrack that reflects its themes. The art style is unique but less colorful compared to its successor.
    • Persona 4: Features a brighter, more vibrant art style and a catchy soundtrack that complements its lighter tone. The character designs are more varied and colorful.
  4. Character Development:

    • Persona 3: Characters often deal with personal issues related to loss and existential questions, leading to deeper emotional arcs.
    • Persona 4: Characters face their inner demons, leading to growth and resolution of personal conflicts, often with a more optimistic tone.
  5. Reception and Legacy:

    • Both games are critically acclaimed, but Persona 4 is often regarded as more accessible and user-friendly, appealing to a broader audience. Persona 3 is praised for its darker narrative and emotional depth.

Takeaways:

  • If you prefer a darker, more introspective story, Persona 3 may resonate more with you.
  • If you enjoy a lighter, more community-focused narrative with more control over combat, Persona 4 is likely the better choice.
  • Both games offer rich character development and engaging gameplay, making them standout titles in the JRPG genre.

Recommendation: Consider playing both games to appreciate their unique strengths and storytelling approaches. If you have to choose one,
