Recommendations for Dark Mystery Movies

Classic and Modern Thrillers

For those who enjoy classic thrillers with a dark edge, movies like "I Saw The Devil" and "Zodiac" provide intense narratives that keep viewers on the edge of their seats [1:1][1:2]. "Memento," known for its unique storytelling structure, is another must-watch for fans of psychological twists [1:2].

International Films

If you're open to non-English language films, "The Invisible Guest" (Spanish) and "The Secret in Their Eyes" offer gripping mysteries with intricate plots [1:6]. "The Vanishing" (1988), a Dutch film, is praised for its chilling narrative and unconventional ending [3:2].

Unique Storylines

For those seeking films with unique and unconventional stories, "Oldboy" (2003) offers a twisted narrative that's both engaging and thought-provoking [4:1]. "Mulholland Drive," a David Lynch classic, is recommended for its surreal and mysterious storyline [4:2].

Dark Comedies

If you're looking for something lighter yet still within the mystery genre, "Happy Death Day" and "Hot Fuzz" blend humor with suspense, providing an entertaining watch without being too heavy [5:1][5:2]. "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" is another fun option that combines comedy with horror elements [5:3].

Movies with Great Twists

Films like "Parasite" and "The Sixth Sense" are renowned for their unexpected twists and captivating storylines [3:1]. "Nightmare Alley" offers a compelling narrative with a memorable ending [3:3][4:6].

These recommendations span various styles and languages, offering something for every fan of dark mystery movies. Whether you prefer classic thrillers, international cinema, or dark comedies, these selections promise intrigue and entertainment.

ORIGINAL POST

I'm looking for a darker detective thriller with a good mystery. Might be detective season 1 vibes. I watched a lot of the most well known movies from this genre like Seven, Usual suspects, Prisoners etc. Would appreciate any sugestions. You can add something from recent years (I wasn't in the game lately) or maybe something not in english language that is also good. Thanks!

Give me some mystery/thriller movies based off this list!

Posted by ParanoidPistachio · in r/MovieSuggestions · 1 month ago

I’ll list some films in particular that are personal favs spanning from different genres, so someone can point me in the right direction. I’ll also list popular films I did not like. I tend to go for mystery/thriller and neo noirs, but the different genres I’ll listen might be helpful for understanding what I like in a movie.

Here’s a list of my favorite mystery/thrillers:

The Vanishing (1988)

Body Heat

Angel Heart

The Pledge

Mulholland Drive and Lynch in general

The Conversation

A Simple Plan

Frailty

One False Move

Cache

Wind River

Falling Down

Affliction

Here’s a short list of my favorite dramas:

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

The Wrestler

Barfly

Slingblade

The Station Agent

Critically acclaimed movies I did NOT like:

Inception

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Dawn of the Dead (super boring in the same way I found “Aliens” boring but LOVED Alien)

I’ve been recommended the Prestige a ton, but I’m super hesitant with Nolan. I just don’t like his style generally and Interstellar to me, was really nothing more than an overproduced space flick… entertaining, though. Only Memento and the Dark Knight I really like by him. I just don’t see how a movie about two magicians is that interesting or meaningful other than raw entertainment.

Also, you can assume I’ve seen the big name classics like LA Confidential, Chinatown, Fargo, Oldboy, Hitchcock, Scorsese, Tarantino, etc. etc.

Winter’s Bone, Coherence and Badlands are ones I have not seen, yet I hope Coherence is not the same nonsense I felt with Spotless Mind. Let me know your thoughts, thanks.

Darker Thriller/mystery movies that really make you think, or a great twist

Posted by CryptographerVast774 · in r/MovieSuggestions · 1 month ago

I have become so obsessed with movies that really lock me in to figure out what is happening, but would never be able to guess. Even just well directed thrillers with a great story.

Some good examples have been Shutter Island, Memento, The Prestige, Identity, Coherence, Prisoners, The Game, Zodiac, Seven, Interstellar, etc.

Been having a hard time finding new movies/shows to enjoy that give me the feeling that I have gotten from these movies. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Vanishing (1988) - Dutch film with a typically European ending. When it was remade in 1993 with Kiefer Sutherland, they ruined it with a happy ending. The original is, iirc, terrifying.

Dark comedy murder mystery movies that are comfortable to watch and not too "heavy" if that makes sense?

Posted by fullmoon_123 · in r/MovieSuggestions · 3 years ago

I don't know if anyone here has watched The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window starring Kristen Bell, it's a tv series on netflix. It's a bit dark comedy/kind of a parody but it's serious when it has to be and it's interesting suspense even though it does have a ridiculous ending lol. I loved it!

So I'm looking for movies that have a similar feel to that tv show. It doesn't necessarily have to be a full on comedy but I wanted it to be more comfortable to watch. I'm not really up for "heavy" or too dramatic movies tonight (like the woman in the window, which the tv series is parodying)

Any way don't know if my explaining makes sense but if anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate it.

Well, someone's got to break the ice, and it might as well be me. I mean, I'm used to being a hostess, it's part of my husband's work. And it's always difficult when a group of new friends meet together for the first time, to get acquainted. So I'm perfectly prepared to start the ball rolling. I mean, I, I have absolutely no idea what we're doing here. Or what I'm doing here, or what this place is about, but I am determined to enjoy myself. And I'm very intrigued, and oh my this soup is delicious, isn't it?

Looking for dark, intense Kdrama/movie recommendations

Posted by Hot-Attorney-1 · in r/kdramarecommends · 1 month ago

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently been on a streak of watching darker, thriller-heavy Kdramas and I’m hooked. Some of my favorites so far are:

  • Strangers From Hell → Loved the claustrophobic, eerie atmosphere and how unsettling the characters were.
  • Mouse → The moral dilemmas and twists kept me hooked, though it dragged a bit in later episodes but I still loved the twists.
  • Signal → Loved the time-crossing mystery and emotional weight, especially how cases tied into the detectives’ lives.
  • Beyond Evil → Amazing character depth and ambiguity—kept me questioning everyone’s motives until the end.
  • Flower of Evil → Loved the duality of the ML and how the suspense built around his secrets, though the romance felt slightly overplayed at times.

What I’m looking for:

  • Psychological tension
  • Crime or mystery with strong writing
  • Unsettling or eerie atmosphere
  • Complex characters with hidden sides
  • Anything gripping/horror and not fluffy/lighthearted

What I’ve already seen:

  • Squid Game
  • Train to Busan
  • The Wailing
  • Exhuma
  • A Shop for Killers
  • Moving
  • Vincenzo
  • My Name
  • Happiness
  • Kingdom
  • Sweet Home
  • Extracurricular
  • Itaewon Class
  • Sky Castle
  • Strangers From Hell
  • Mouse
  • Signal
  • Beyond Evil
  • Flower of Evil

Would love to hear your recommendations for more Kdramas (or even movies) along these lines!

Thanks in advance!

I think it's a great drama but maybe not what they are looking for if they want a morally grey protagonist. The first episodes of the bullying were dark and the domestic violence as well. But it's important to note that's the worst things that happen there and it happens to innocent characters. The bad guys suffer but more from strategies of the FL putting the bullies against eachother etc...so the FL is NOT morally ambiguous, I feel like she is pretty morally clean, which some people loved and others were a bit disappointed. If the OP doesn't mind that and is okay with seeing innocent people suffering a lot for no reason and the bad guys not suffer as much (physically graphic wise) but still fucking eachother up and being scared, I would say give it a watch

Reborn Rich - it’s about a guy who is loyal to a Chaboel family. He discovers a secret and they murder him. He wakes up in the past in the body of a child - the 4th grandson of that same family. Since he is from the future, he knows what will happen and he uses that knowledge to impress the chairman (his grandfather). He works to figure out who has killed him.

It is AWESOME.

dark mystery movies

Key Considerations for Dark Mystery Movies:

  1. Themes: Dark mystery films often explore themes of crime, psychological tension, and moral ambiguity. Look for movies that delve into the darker aspects of human nature.

  2. Atmosphere: These films typically have a moody and suspenseful atmosphere, often enhanced by cinematography, music, and setting.

  3. Plot Twists: A hallmark of dark mysteries is unexpected plot twists that keep viewers guessing until the end. Look for films known for their clever storytelling.

  4. Character Depth: Strong character development is crucial. The protagonists and antagonists should have complex motivations that drive the plot.

  5. Critical Acclaim: Consider films that have received positive reviews or awards, as they often indicate quality storytelling and production.

Recommended Dark Mystery Movies:

  • "Se7en" (1995): A gripping tale of two detectives hunting a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

  • "Gone Girl" (2014): A psychological thriller that explores the complexities of marriage and media perception when a woman goes missing.

  • "Prisoners" (2013): A tense story about a father's desperate search for his missing daughter, raising questions about morality and justice.
