Pros of Eyelash Extensions
Instant Glamour: Eyelash extensions can give you longer, fuller lashes that enhance your appearance instantly. Many users appreciate waking up feeling "pretty" without the need for additional eye makeup [1:3]
[2:5].
Reduced Makeup Routine: With extensions, you can skip mascara and other eye makeup, simplifying your daily routine [2:2]
[3:1]. They provide a consistent look that feels more put together
[3:1].
Customization: Extensions can be tailored to achieve different looks, from natural to dramatic, depending on the density and length chosen [2].
Professional Application: When applied correctly by a skilled technician, extensions can be safe for your natural lashes and last several weeks [5:1]
[5:2].
Cons of Eyelash Extensions
Costly Maintenance: Extensions require regular upkeep, typically every 2-3 weeks, which can become expensive over time [1:5]
[2:3]. The initial application and subsequent fills can add up quickly
[4:6].
Potential Damage: There is a risk of damaging your natural lashes, especially if extensions are not applied properly or if they are pulled off [1:1]
[3:3]. Some users have reported their natural lashes becoming shorter or less full after wearing extensions
[4:3].
Lifestyle Adjustments: Extensions require careful handling; you must avoid rubbing your eyes, using oil-based products, and getting them wet [2:4]
[4:1]. This can be inconvenient for individuals who frequently touch their face or prefer thorough cleansing routines
[3:2].
Comfort Issues: Some users experience discomfort, such as dry eyes or irritation, while wearing extensions [2:2]
[5:4]. Additionally, poorly applied extensions can look unnatural or clumpy
[3:5].
Alternatives
For those hesitant about extensions, alternatives like lash lifts and tints offer less maintenance while enhancing natural lashes [4:4]
[3:6]. Lash serums can also promote growth and improve the appearance of natural lashes
[4:2].
Recommendations
If considering eyelash extensions, ensure you choose a licensed and experienced technician. Review their previous work and client feedback to minimize risks [5:5]. Be prepared for lifestyle changes and weigh the cost against the benefits to determine if extensions are right for you.
The one pro would presumably be longer lashes. The cons would be upkeep, damage to your own lashes, cost, possible risk to eyes.
(This will totally vary for everyone ofc so these are my pros and cons. As a disclaimer I wear makeup most days, like 4-5 days of the week, even if I’m just chilling at home because I enjoy putting it on)
Pros - I don’t feel them at all/they’re comfortable; I feel very “pretty” right when I wake up; I don’t feel the need to bother with eyeshadow, liner, or mascara (obv) so when I do makeup it takes less time; because I’m wearing a mask all the time if I’m out I feel more...expressive? Pretty? in Ye Olde Days I would typically wear a lipgloss or lipstick and you can’t see that now so I like my eyes to be more focused on; I can choose the style and have gotten super natural, and much more dramatic if a special event was coming up; and lastly I just like them, I like how I look with them, and although I like the look of individual lashes they’re a pain in the ass to put on so just waking up and having long, dark lashes (my natural lashes are long but light brown) makes me happy.
Cons: they can be expensive to get all the time and maintain, if someone isn’t just getting them for special occasions; if they’re done incorrectly they could irritate someone’s eye, or damage the natural lashes; you get used to how you look with them on and feel like a naked mole rat without them (same for falsies tho). -oh one more! If you sleep on your face or rub your eyes they can get all messed up.-
They’re not for everyone and that’s ok. But I like mine. I’m getting a fill tomorrow.
If you’ve got blonde or ginger eyelashes I’d suggest getting your eyelashes tinted instead - it makes a real difference to how you look, don’t have to faff with mascara, and it’s just super convenient!
They’re really expensive and time consuming to maintain. I got them for my wedding and considered keeping them because I liked them so much, but they cost way too much for how often you need to go.
Pros: longer eyelashes
Cons: might fall off, time consuming to get done often and make sure they don’t get damaged, can be costly, also risk of damaging your natural eyelashes.
My take is that it’s way more worth it to take care of your own eyelashes with Vaseline and make sure they’re healthy and have a chance to grow. Less time consuming and cheaper, and looks better in the long run imo
So i just started esthetics school and i’m kinda interested in being certified in lashes after graduation, and i kinda maybe wanna eventually get them one time just to see what it’s like haha. To those of you who get lash extensions regularly/now and again, what are some things you like and don’t like about them? Estheticians who are lash certified, what are some pros and cons of application and do you like doing lashes? Are they pretty versatile in how dense or long you want them? Thank you!
pro: don‘t have to wear mascara/fake eyelashes, can save a lot of time, wake up with long lashes
con: pricey, high maintenance, idk if its just me but sometimes my eyes feel dry when I have them on
They are pretty but for me, along with what the other commenters have said the price for the upkeep was just more than I was willing to pay ($75 every 2 weeks). I also HATED having to avoid getting them wet or touching my eyes, but that’s more personal. I also didn’t like that they would often break my real lashes when they fell off, always pretty close to the root.
Pros: you literally wake up looking gorgeous
Cons: can’t get them wet, real lashes break off, expensive, have to get them refilled otherwise they start looking janky af.
I did them once. I’ll stick to applying my Falsies every day thank you much.
I love them! You’re makeup routine is done faster. You don’t even need to wear foundation. It literally makes your face. I don’t get them often though because I hate laying down for so long!
I was super curious and got eyelash extensions once - super natural and a brown colour to match my existing lashes. I ABSOLUTELY HATED THEM. They looked great at first, I can admit it. But removing makeup, sleeping and living with them was a pain in the ass. They kept twisting around and pointing into my eye or in weird directions and then when they started falling out my lashes looked extremely gross so eventually I just pulled all of them off along with my actual eyelashes. Never again.
This. All of it
I had lash extensions once, never again. It was the worst according to me. I naturally have long lashes but wanted to try out the hype. I am a person who likes to touch my face and eyes, wash them properly each day but with the extensions I couldn't and it made me feel dirty, or like I had dirt in them. Eventually I decided to rip them out along with my own lashes because I couldn't take it anymore. I have since moved on to lash serums instead and I'm very pleased with that result.
I did same exact thing♀️ I kept picking at them and they looked horrible after a week
Don’t do it! Ruined my natural lashes. Took months of castor oil to repair them to their natural length/volume. Also super expensive and unless you get them filled every 3 weeks, they charge you for a full set ($150)
Lash extensions look super fake. To me they look bad on every person I’ve ever seen them on.
Then you definitely haven’t seen any that are done well. To achieve a “natural” looking set, a combination of volume and lengthening lashes should be staggered from the outside in. The amount applied also makes a big difference in achieving a natural vs. caterpillar look. The worst ones I’ve seen all look uniform and heavy, but they definitely don’t have to look that way.
I’ve seen them double the length of even dramatic falsies. I’ve seen them look like a solid black clump with no natural feather to them at all. I’m hoping that they get better, I’m glad to know they can be natural looking.
try a lash lift! they are less maintenance
For me, the cons were the time commitment and the cost. I recently had my lashes removed and I miss them already. Pros were how easy it was to wake up and go in the morning and how my look just consistently felt more “put together” with them.
Also, I had forgotten how annoying mascara was, and now because I was so used to my extensions (I had them for over a year) my lashes seem so short to me.
I went through the exact same thing, but I had lashes for four years. No lie, when I saw my stubby naked lashes I cried.
Castor oil really did wonders. Buy a good mascara and use the oil at night. Now my lashes look pretty damn good for no extensions and my wallet thanks me!
Depends on the look your going for. They can definitely get really pricey, and if you don’t have time/$$ for the upkeep they won’t look good. But, if you’re up for all of that you can’t beat the look. If you have semi decent lashes to start with, honestly using a lash serum (NeuLash, Babelash) has done wonders for my lashes. They were sparse and light a month and a half ago, and when I saw my mom last week she asked if I had gotten extensions (I was barefaced, no makeup). The serums are somewhat pricey as well, but last quite awhile and are still cheaper than the extensions. I started noticing results in about a week and a half with Neulash. I used to curl my lashes, use a lash primer, and double coat mascara. Now they’re so long and thick on their own that if i curl/prime/double coat, when I blink I have mascara dots where they touch near my eyebrows.
When mine finally grew out/fell off I noticed my natural lashes were less full and shorter (people said they would just look shorter because you're used to seeing them so long when they're fake but I know where on my brow bone my lashes normally come up to as they are naturally quite long and they were definitely shorter)- they grew back to normal but it definitely took a few months.
I haven't seen many other people mention that though so maybe my eyelashes are extra sensitive!
Have you considered getting a lash lift, possibly with a lash tint? I know extensions would be too extra for me so I’m looking into a lift instead.
I get my lashes lifted and tinted, and it's so worth it. Any mascara I use after I get a lift is looks amazing.
Pro: you look absolutely perfect all the time
Con: $$$
Yep, pro: your eyeballs are fabulously decorated.
Con: you have to be careful what cleansers you use (no oil cleansers or any oils around eyes). You can’t rub your eyes. When they start falling out they REALLY fall and you look weird which means constant upkeep. Mine bugged one eye. Too many can look caterpillar ( only saw this with one person).
My eyeballs are no longer fabulous but I can rub my face it’s all good I guess.
Yes, I love mine! I wake up with them already on and ready to go, they're easy to clean, and I get a fill every three weeks. I don't have to worry about clumpy mascara.
Hey all! I have been wanting to get eyelash extensions for a while, but I'm scared it will break my natural lashes + have seen how red the eyes get after application and am super scared to have complications or anything like that. Are eyelash extensions worth it? Do they last a while? Thanks for your attention! 🌹🌹🌹
Lash extensions are perfectly safe for your natural lashes as long as they are applied correctly. I have clients that have been getting lashes for 5+ years from me and their naturals are thriving. It’s all about the lash artist you choose! 🤍
What should I really look for when finding a technician to make sure it's a pro? 🥺
Most important would probably be make sure they’re licensed + certified, then I would look at their client reviews, zoom in on their work and look at the application, etc
They aren't good for your lashes, just like gel/acrylic isn't good for your nails. I'm really over techs acting like "applied correctly" means no damage. It's a risk vs reward.
I feel the same. I have an appointment June 6th and I’m nervous about it. I also am a chronic eye rubber 🙄 so I think I’m really going to have to work on that. I’m interested in what others say.
If you get lash extensions from a professional, they will not damage your natural lashes. Make sure the lash tech has experience and see their socials for previous work!
I’m thinking about getting extensions for my birthday for the first time ever. I’m still deciding between classic and a hybrid set. What are some pros and cons about lash extensions?
Pros: Feeling fully made up every day without needing 30-45min to put makeup on, as the other poster said being ready to go way more quickly, healthier skin because of skipping makeup, your look is now weather-proof/workout-proof/dance-proof. It's a major quality of life upgrade if eye makeup is part of your every day self expression.
Cons: They're an investment of money and mindfulness in your daily routine. You need to take care of them to avoid damage to your natural lashes. For me it means no moisture for 24-48 hrs and fills every 2-3 wks. After that no oils and pretty much just not rubbing my eyes ever (ngl I do miss rubbing my eyes lol). I still sleep on my side every night with no issues.
Oh and don't touch them, always carry a clean lash brush, although I consider this one a pro and a con bc who doesn't feel pretty pulling out a mirror and a lash brush to do a quick touch up, lol.
Last tip: If you get them and decide you want them off, resist the urge to DIY and just book an appointment. It takes 15 minutes, smells lovely, and this way you'll skip the redness and swelling and more importantly still have your natural lashes left afterward.
The besttt piece of advice! Yes, I love seeing those cute little fans and wands/brushes lol. However, lashes aren’t apart of my everyday routine, but I’m trying to upgrade myself a little bit lol that’s why. I also agree about getting them removed, I always said I would get them professionally removed!
Pro. Wake up and it takes no effort to get ready at all. Wash your face and boom you’re out the door. Con. You can’t rub your eyes and you need to be careful with how you sleep. Those are my pros and cons lol
How should you sleep with extensions?
Tbh sleeping on your back comes with experience if you’re a crazy sleeper and lashes are expensive so it motivates me to try not to sleep so wild but you should get them. Do your research on salons and make sure that if you don’t like how they turn out to let the lash tech know right then and there. 🫶🏻
On your back
Get yourself an ‘eye bra’ mask to protect your lashes.
I’ve been getting them for 3 years and the pros outweigh the cons IMO. Some of the pros are that you literally don’t need to wear makeup anymore and still look good and they’re pretty low maintenance, some of the cons are that they can get expensive and if you don’t go to a professional they can end up looking too fake
Hi, everyone! So, I'm thinking of getting lash extensions, but I want to get some insight before so I don't end up with unwanted consequences!
My lashes don't stand out at all, I don't use mascara, I sweat a lot during my workouts, and it would be a bother. My eyes are droopy and I feel it would elevate my looks if I had longer, more prominent lashes. I have found a trusted salon that my friend has been going to for the last couple of years.
Is there anything I should look out for? Will it damage my lashes? I heard lashes fall out every 21 days or so, that is why it is not an issue, but I am not so sure about that. My eyes are sensitive, could that cause me any issue? Hygiene-wise are they difficult to maintain? Should I just go for it?
Sorry for the barrage of questions! I am just trying to look better and boost my confidence without damaging my health! Thanks in advance! 😊
Love having mine done.
Pros - look ready/refreshed with minimal effort, easier than mascara, less messy than mascara, you can take a nap when getting them done.
Cons - it’s expensive, a lash apt is usually 2 hours at least and upkeep is about every 2-4 weeks
I don't use makeup at all since I have very sensitive skin, only lipstick, so I wanted something that is not makeup to make me feel prettier. Thanks for sharing!
Cons- high maintainance -expensive -The glue is bad for the eyes -looks unattractive and unatural
Pros- never seen any
Thanks for the insight! Personally, I think they look very pretty when done by a Pro. I am concerned about the glue, tho
They’re amazing. You’ll love them.
Pros - always look put together/ready, no curling lashes and mascara etc so saves time.
Cons - can be expensive. I’m lazy so don’t like washing them but it’s crucial you do, lastly I like rubbing my eyes too much 😂
I use to workout a lot too, just make sure you wash them daily and you’ll be good :) I quit getting them because money but also I felt like after 3 or 4 months, I was getting less and less because my lashes weren’t growing in. However, I hardly ever cleaned them (I know that’s bad but they didn’t inform me to do it) & I went to a chain place so I’m sure it wasn’t the BEST quality out there as they just want to make money / don’t care about quality
Thanks for the pointers! Did your lashes go back to how they used to be or are they more sparse now?
I LOVE mine. I love always looking put together and even without any other makeup I feel a little fancy and like I look great.
Avoid anything with oil; get oil-free moisturizers, cleansers, sunscreen, etc. Oil dissolves the glue and you'll lose lashes. Wash gently, I never stick my face under the shower spray anymore, and always wash your lashes after sweating. Don't rub your eyes or pick at your lashes!
I have sentive eyes, and occasionally when getting the lashes I tear up fro the glue. I use an anti-allergen eye drop (Opcon or Pataday, you can get them w/o prescription) before I get a fill and it makes my eyes feel fine.
Good luck - hope you love them!
Thank you for the feedback! Very useful info :)
I love getting my eyelashes done. I’ve never had any damage unless I go through a picking stage and end up pulling some out….
Easy to maintain, I just avoid any oils as that dissolves the glue. There’s alot of lash shampoos and cleansers nowadays aswell which are great. Just cleanse them then dry with a spoolie and hairdryer!
I have sensitive eyes/skin too and I don’t get any problems normally. The only thing you might get is a tiny bit of irritation with the sweat, I know if I’ve cried before or got watery eyes it sometimes feels a bit funny for a few minutes but it goes once they’re dry.
Don’t think too much into it, they’ll feel odd at first but you’ll get used to them. I love extensions they make me feel pretty lol
Hi, thanks for the reply and the feedback! This is very reassuring info, I am feeling kind of anxious to try something out of my comfort zone as I don't like to mess with the eye area, so this is really helpful!
I’ve seen some really good and some really bad eyelash extensions. I’ve also heard lots of pros and lots of cons. Everything from it saved people from feeling they need to wear eye makeup to it ruined people’s eyelashes permanently.
Anyone who has gotten them I’d greatly appreciate your opinion one way or another!!!
The first 2 weeks were worth it. And then it sort of wasn’t when the touch up cost started to add up. The hassle and expense of it just was too much.
The pros, yes it looks awesome and you don’t need as much makeup.
The cons, sort of uncomfortable, the lashes go in every direction and you have to comb them out constantly. It’s definitely noticeable during random moments like when the wind blows your lashes feel heavy and like they’re blowing away lol. And of course, once you start you have to keep going or suffer how devastatingly awful you look without them. And they do destroy lashes after repeat times, lashes fall out earlier than they normally do.
I would say it’s worth it for an event like wedding or vacation where there’s lots of photos. If it’s just one set, not too much damage done. It’s not worth it to pay so much every 3 weeks for “everyday”
Thank you so much for commenting I really appreciate you! I’m definitely freaked out at the idea of damaging my lashes so this is really making me think I don’t want to go down this path. Thank you!
The damage isn’t permanent, takes about 6 weeks for lashes to turn over and get back to normal afterwards. It’s a tough 6 weeks of feeling ugly but it all does grow back : P
I get my lashes curled and tinted and I really enjoy it. Its not as dramatic as extensions, but it saves me time in the morning and then your regular lashes just grow out.
Thank you so much! That seems a lot less damaging…I’ll look into lash tinting a bit more!
Honestly no. They definitely damage your natural lashes, and the upkeep is SO EXPENSIVE (we’re talking maintenance every 2-3 weeks to keep them looking fresh). I’ve started using medspa eyelash growth serum (Latisse) and lash tint and I get a comparable result for a lot less damage to my natural lashes, and less upkeep cost in the long run.
Thank you so much!! That really helps put things in perspective I didn’t realize the upkeep would realistically require fills that often. Thank you for commenting!
Nope, it’s too expensive and time consuming to upkeep. It only looks good for the first week then it looks ridiculous when they start falling out and you’re missing chunks of eyelash.
Thank you for the insight I really appreciate it!
I’ve always thought even when they’re fresh they look kinda janky 😬
LOL I can’t disagree I’ve seen some really crazy ones but I’ve seen a few that swing me the other way because they look so good!
I have a very minimal daily makeup routine - CC cream, concealer under the eyes and a swipe of mascara.
I am the Scoutmaster for an awesome group of young ladies in Scouts BSA and we camp monthly. (If anyone wants to talk about burning down the patriarchy from the inside, let's talk!)
I just use moisturizer when we camp and feel comfortable with a bare face, but I would love to have the extra confidence boost of some darker lashes.
If you've had them, what are the things I should know? What should I look for in a salon? What is upkeep really like?
Edit - It sounds like a lift and tint is really what I would prefer. Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Hooray for you! I am a proud former Girl Scout, and while the patriarchy seems to be doing just fine here in the medical field, I do my best…Lash extensions can look fabulous for an event, especially one that lasts a while. They are probably not suited for camping as they require a consistent lash hygiene routine with very clean water. They also don’t like heat, such as campfires etc.. I am blonde blonde blonde with blue eyes and clear eyelashes, so I keep trying to use lash extensions but each time I try for more than a few weeks my eyes get crusty and when the extensions fall off my meager lashes are more meager (meagerer?) I also get sort of skeeved out by the idea of demodex mites having a nice place to nest and use Rx ivermectin gel when I have them. Long story short, I agree “on my honor” with everyone else that tint and/or lift is better option for camping. Thanks for being a scout leader.
I got them for my wedding. I got it done once two months in advance to make sure that I didn’t have a reaction and then got them redone 3 days prior.
They looked incredible in photos of me.
You couldn’t see them in photos of groups or when I was in the background of photos of other people.
They fell out completely in 5 days.
Pre-pandemic, my salon budget was literally the biggest expenditure of my life. I’m not at all afraid to spend money on myself.
I would only do it again for an important event with a photographer who is there specifically to photograph me.
I recommend doing lash lift and tint instead. Looks great but lasts longer and less damaging to your lashes
+1
I loved how they look but unfortuetly I had a bad reaction. So i opted for a lift and tint instead and it gives me the extra boost I need when I'm bare faced
I love them and get them regularly, but they do require upkeep. My sets last 3 weeks minimum, but in order for that to happen I wear an eye mask when I sleep, brush them in the morning and at night, use a special lash shampoo every other day, take good care not to scratch them too often, and stay away from oil-based products around my eyes. It definitely is a lot, but as someone with a small toddler the benefit of being able to wake up and look put together is worth it for me. If you’re willing to put in the time/money for the convenience, I personally think they’re worth it.
Edited to add: I’ve found that volume and even hybrid lashes (more than one extension per natural lash) made my lashes fall out more, so I stick with classic.
THIS is the comment I’ve been searching for! I have a 1 year old and I work full time. I recently started going to the salon for acrylic nails and theyre a HUGE time saver because I was previously dealing with painting, chipped, filing, repainting, etc my natural nails and my nails were a huge headache. With acrylics, they always look polished and they’re sturdy as hell. The only maintenance is obviously going to fill them every 3 weeks or so, which is honestly a nice “mom break”
I HATE mascara and it seems to make my lashes dry and irritated? I’m thinking some lash extensions would be nice too, and helpful that my eye makeup is semi done without doing much daily.
I’ve been debating getting some and want to know what the pros/cons are, if you think they’re worth it; etc :)
Agreeing with some of the comments here, I used to be adamant about getting my lashes done. When I went into an office, it was great to get up and only spend about 5-10 mins on makeup. Now, I’m working from home and use strip lashes when I go out or have really big meetings where I need to look ultra nice.
They’re incredibly convenient and upped my confidence level, but the price and maintenance weren’t worth it to me.
they’re great if you find the right person. i pay $200 for full set and $80 for fills.
That’s around the average price I’m seeing for my area, how often do you feel like you need a fill??
2-3 weeks
they look cute for like one week before they start falling out and looking crazy. not worth the the money considering they are so expensive
You feel like you can wear almost zero makeup with these!! I like how I look fresh and play on the natural look. It’s a lot less work
Same!! Just foundation and ready to go!
I have short straight thin lashes. I really love them. I can wake up, look in the mirror and say, damn you look cute!
Only cons are not being able to run your eyes and taking more care in cleaning your eyelids/upper lash line.
Eyelash extensions pros and cons

Waterproof: Unlike mascara, eyelash extensions are waterproof, making them ideal for swimming or exercising without worrying about smudging.
Low Maintenance: Once applied, they require minimal upkeep, although regular fills are needed to maintain their appearance.
Cons of Eyelash Extensions:
Cost: Initial application and maintenance can be expensive, with fills typically required every 2-4 weeks.
Potential Damage: Improper application or removal can lead to damage or loss of natural lashes.
Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the adhesive used for extensions.
Maintenance Required: While they are low maintenance, you still need to avoid oil-based products and be gentle when cleaning your face.
Limited Longevity: Extensions typically last 4-6 weeks before needing a fill, depending on your natural lash growth cycle.
Recommendation: If you decide to get eyelash extensions, choose a reputable salon with certified technicians to minimize risks and ensure a quality application. Additionally, consider your lifestyle and budget to determine if the benefits outweigh the cons for you.
