TL;DR Many museums in NYC offer free or pay-what-you-wish admission for residents, often requiring valid ID or specific days. Notable options include the Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Museum of Natural History.
Pay-What-You-Wish Admission
Several major institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), offer pay-what-you-wish admission policies for NYC residents. This means you can technically enter these museums by paying as little as $1 [1:2]
[5:2]. The Met's policy is well-known, allowing visitors to donate any amount they wish, including nothing
[2:5]. However, some visitors feel pressured to pay a minimum amount due to social expectations
[5:7].
Free Days and Memberships
Certain museums have designated free days each month. For example, MoMA offers free admission on the first Friday of every month [5:1]. Additionally, NYC residents can access free memberships through programs like Culture Pass, which provides free entry to various cultural institutions via library membership
[5:3].
Specific Museum Recommendations
While the Met and AMNH are popular choices, other museums worth visiting include the Tenement Museum, Museum of the City of New York, and the Cloisters [3:1]
[3:4]. These museums provide unique historical insights and are highly recommended by locals and visitors alike.
Challenges with Free Admission
Despite the availability of free admission policies, some users express frustration with crowded conditions on free days [5:9]. Additionally, there is confusion regarding which institutions offer genuinely free admission versus pay-what-you-wish options, particularly concerning places like the Bronx Zoo, which does not offer free general admission
[5:10].
Additional Free Activities
Beyond museums, NYC offers numerous free activities, such as exploring Central Park, walking the Brooklyn Bridge, and attending free concerts and events during the summer [4:2]
[4:3]. These activities provide opportunities to enjoy the city's culture without spending money.
17 cultural institutions across New York City are situated on public parkland and were founded on the promise that in exchange for free rent, funded by NYC taxpayers, they would provide free admission to New Yorkers. Yet, over the years these institutions have received no oversight from the city and have made their own rules and regulations to bypass the original promises made. Including these major institutions:
American Natural History Museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Bronx Zoo

Your post is not entirely correct. The Met is practically free for NYC residents with a valid ID. You can pay as little as $1 to go, per the “suggested donation” clause. I do it all the time. #facts
What do you mean when you say “difficulty accessing free admission]”?
I don’t know about the Bronx Zoo and AMNH but at the Met you just show your ID and then you can pay whatever you want (including $0). I’ve done it many times and never had any difficulty with it. I believe it’s pretty common there as I know other people who do the same and haven’t heard of anyone getting pushback.
I’ve never had difficulty accessing free admission to any of those institutions.
AMNH also has the donation I take the fam once a year
I’ve never had difficulty accessing these spaces with a NYC-based discount. They even have great pay-as-you-wish days at Frick and Whitney! There have been times that I just walked right into AMNH for free without waiting in that line.

Since when there's a free admission to the Bronx zoo? AMNH and Met always had free or pay what you can for NYC residents, but the zoo - never.
I was shocked to see Bronx zoo on the list. That’s false right?
You have to get an idnyc for the zoo. My wife and kid were free when we went on tuesday. She also got a year free membership for the museum of natural history
We’ve always had free Wednesdays.
I used to enter the MET free by telling them I was an artist.
You used to be able to go in free through the gift shop, but that may have changed.
I’m a member though because it’s favorite place in NYC.
I know for a fact you can go to the MET, give them 1 penny and you'll get a ticket. The price you see posted is a suggested ticket price but in no way shape or form is it enforced.
This is a campaign posted on all sorts of NYC subs, by a woman who has been ticked off at the MET because she didn’t want them expanding near her Fifth Avenue co-op (right across the street from the MET) because it is “historic”.
I’m all for increasing access to the arts and other cultural institutions. But her incessant posting of this, plus her claim of these institutions “ignoring rights” is what makes me suspicious of her motives.
A “Hey, did you know you can get into these places for free?” post is one thing. But this is someone who seems to be looking for “dirt” on these institutions because of some beef in her past.
WELL actually, I saw them for free! I donated blood with the NY Blood Drive or smt and they gave me a voucher for 2 free mets tickets about a month or so ago. The ad popped up on my instagram! I got snacks and a pack of girls scout cookies too. The only conditions were that it was application to games on Monday-Thursday only and most of the seats were in the 400-500 section but it was nice!
And note that the Mets “pay what you want” makes you donate something, they won’t let you in for free. And that they used to make you wait in long lines in-person to do even that.
You can see the Mets for 1¢
Yeah that’s been an improvement. It should still be free for NYers though.
Visiting my friend in the city this week. I’m a teacher on summer break and she works during the day. What museums would you recommend? I’ve been to MoMa, the met, 9/11, natural history… I was interested in the broadway museum but the price is pretty steep. I’m interested in anything, but I love history.
What museums do you recommend?
EDIT: thanks for the all responses. I’m gonna head up to the met cloisters tomorrow and today in either going to do tenement or city of New York museum. My friend and I want to do frick this week after work.
My NYC daughters and their Broadway obsessed friends (as well as reviews) think the Broadway museum is overpriced for what you get.
I'd vote The Cloisters if you haven't been. Simply lovely. I'm DYING to see the Frick as the remodel is finally done. The Tenement Museum experience is top notch. The Whitney or the Guggenheim--check to see what exhibits are going on and what appeals to you most. If the Whitney, you can tie that in with a walk along the Highline. Museum of Moving Pictures if you're a cinephile. Have an amazing lunch/dinner in Astoria after. Honorable mentions: The Morgan Library. Have tea! The Neue Gallerie.P Have lunch in their Bavarian restaurant. Very small, but so lovely. Personal favorite, The Noguchi Museum. Gorgeous space. Worth the trek if that's your vibe.
Kinda liked Broadway museum but it’s true that it doesn’t have a ton of space to work with, so it’s small and overpriced for what you get. but what in Times Square isn’t? I saw some cool props and stage sets. Worth one visit, for me, but idk if I’d go back.
The Museum of the Moving Image is great. Right by the American Museum of Natural History is the New York Historical Society which has some great art, a collection of Tiffany lamps, and obviously objects that showcase the history of New York. Really interesting!
Have to be honest, I’ve tried once AMMI since it opened…but just never seem to even like it. Did see a screening that was introduced by its famous director there once, so that was cool.
i enjoyed MMI for the Muppets Exhibit they had, idk if it’s still on, but that was really the highlight of that one
Tenement Museum Transit Museum Museum of the City of New York
Yes to all 3! Came in to make the same recs.
Would you recommend tenement or city of New York museum?
Tenament Museum, especially if your ancestors came via ellis island. Not the main Met, but the Cloisters is absolutely worth it if you like history and haven't been. Not museums per se, but the botanical gardens in the Bronx and Brooklyn - they're like museums of plants!
I did the cloisters this morning and then headed way downtown to the tenament museum! I have ancestors who came over this way so it is definitely a cool thing to do
Glad you enjoyed it!!

Reposted due to an error made in my last post. Thanks CIO!
Any free shows and activities that you would recommend to experience this city? And to meet and get to know other people in this city?
The Met is pay what you wish for city residents. Numerous museums have a free day each month.
Sightseeing (architecture, monuments) around the city
Walking around exploring neighborhoods, parks, the Brooklyn Bridge
Free events—in the summer there’s NYPhil and opera in the park, a jazz festival in the park, numerous other free concerts. Many free outdoor movies in various parks. Shakespeare in the park.
Winter is harder for free performances/events, but you might look for stuff like bars without a cover that have music or comedy.
Holiday activities—holiday markets, the Thanksgiving day parade and/or balloon filling, Rockefeller xmas tree, Dyker Heights lights
Free activities to meet people—join a meetup group, running or sports club, etc
Free public lectures at universities; readings at book stores; cultural events at embassies
Gallery openings
Edit: List of free/pay what you wish museums and free museum days. https://www.nyc-arts.org/collections/35/free-museum-days-or-pay-what-you-wish
What are some good free sports clubs? Volo and Sandlot seems to require payment
I confess I’m not a sports person, but there are a lot of sports/fitness groups on meetup. Most for stuff like running, soccer, volleyball, frisbee, or basketball that can be done in city parks with minimal equipment. If you’re looking for a more formal competitive team with uniforms that might be something you have to pay to join, but if you’re looking to play sports and meet people there should be plenty of free options.
My favorites free/Cheap AF things to do in NYC:
Museums. some of them are free/pay-as-you-wish once a week, some are pay-as-you-wish for NYC/NYS residents.
Anything in Central Park. Walk from Columbus Circle to Bethesda Fountain to Conservatory Garden
Just hang out in the city, walk from Washington Square Park to Union Square Park, to Madison Square Park, to Bryant Part to Central Park
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, from Brkl to the city
Staten Island Ferry
Roosevelt Island Tramway (free with your unlimited pass)
Get a free donut at Krispy Kreme just by showing your vaccination card
grab a 99 cents pizza
invest $2.75 in a 90-minute all you can ride NYC Ferry
$3.00 beer with free hot dog at Rudy's
Where the heck is centennial gardens in Central Park? Do you mean the conservatory garden?
Yes conservatory garden. Edited.
Thanks
Go to the NYC public library. It’s amazing. They have a few free tours and you can get a free ticket to the Treasures collection.
The Treasures Collection is really quite something! Took visitors there a few weeks back and we stayed for a couple of hours, fascinated.
the skint, TimeOut and Oh My Rockness are frequently recommended event guides. Also, I’m new in NYC. I ran into feverup.com but I was wondering if anyone can recommend other websites to be in the know of things going on in the city. Thank You! from 4 days ago should be of interest to you and links to similar questions.
Questions around meeting people and making friends are regularly asked of, and answered by, this subreddit. Most recently in Best bars to meet people? from 5 days ago and its link to similar questions.
Ticket is good for 90 minutes, just like they said.
It should be enough time to go out from Pier 11 to pretty much any destination and back down to Pier 11 again.
The Soundview one goes up to the Bronx and goes under almost all the East River Bridges: Brooklyn, Manhattan, W'burg, 59th St., Hell Gate, and Triboro. It also passes close to the approach of runway 22 at LGA.
The Rockaway one goes under the Verrazano and passes by a bunch of other interesting stuff too.
Well worth the price.
You could walk around trying to find cool street art , graffiti, interesting architecture.
I have folders on my phone like “Quebec Street art & murals ‘16 ” “ Philadelphia Graffiti ‘18” “ Evil looking Buildings”
I feel like it gives me a reason to get myself to explore. Also its free lol
The ferry is interesting.
You buy a $2.75 ticket and they scan it when you start your first ride. Then, as long as you get into your last ride within 90 minutes from the start of the first ride you're good to go. When you get off your last ride doesn't count.
There's also an app where you buy your ticket(s) there, then you activate the ticket and you see the 90 minutes countdown.
You usually can get 2 rides, unless you go from Per 11 to Rockaway Beach or vice versa.

Museum of natural History is free everyday, you just need to go online and select the NYC resident option and donate x amount, x can equal $0 if you like. It use to be you had to wait on the cash line and go to the cashier and tell them you want to donate nothing-whatever and it was quite embarrassing cause you felt like a cheap f*ck when in reality you were just poor.
In addition to free resident plans, you can get passes through Culture Pass via your friendly public library. Sign up and get a card, https://www.culturepass.nyc/
Aren’t they free on Wednesdays? Is this regarding something else where you can also enter for free?
Btw since this is a Staten Island sub, the Staten Island zoo is also free on Wednesdays if you want to visit
I don't like to go on free admission days. The places are packed.
the MET is anyday they are open and the same with museum of Natural History. i believe MoMa is free the first friday of the month. a lot of them do have stipulations on when they honor the residents policy.
you can get pay what you wish tickets online for some museums! I know you can for the met & met cloisters
The membership is good because you can use it at the Brooklyn aquarium and queens zoo as well.
The pay-what-wish policies still don't adhere to the original public-private partnership that these institutions were originally founded on. New Yorkers should just be able to get in without being asked to pay an amount. We've also heard from some visitors that pay-what-you wish makes them feel like they have to pay an amount and have felt judged when they've offered a minimum amount. Making it difficult for them to enjoy this option.
Maybe back in the day when you had to actually hand cash to someone at the register. Now you can do " pay what you wish " tickets online and dont have to tell the cashier that you want to pay zero dollars for 4 tickets lol. So this removes that barrier. Bronx Zoo def isn't free though.
I wish I saw this yesterday I just paid 50 bucks for the Bronx zoo
I have never not paid for the Bronx zoo wtf
Same, only Wednesdays are free.

Since OP is just shilling their new subreddit:
American Natural History Museum
Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Academy of Music
Brooklyn Children's Museum
Brooklyn Museum
Museum of the City of New York
New York Botanical Garden
New York Hall of Science
Staten Island Museum
Staten Island Zoo
The Metropolitan of Museum of Art
Wave Hill
New York Zoological Society/Wildfire Conservation Society
Bronx Zoo
Central Park Zoo
New York Aquarium
Prospect Park Zoom
Queens Zoo
I’ve never had a problem with the Met or AMNH, but I had no idea the zoos/aquarium were included too.
Is IDNYC the same as my drivers license or do I need a separate ID card for free access?
The full list is pinned on our subreddit: r/NYCFreeAdmission
I can’t find the list at r/NYCFreeAdmission. Where is it pinned?
The Brooklyn botanical garden…? Free?
If you get the real id nyc or whatever it is called you can get free membership to the Bronx zoo
Huh? I've been to both The Met and the AMNH recently and had the option to pick my donation for entry. I've never selected a $0 donation, but I'm relatively certain that that is an option an has been for a long time.
When I lived in NYC about 10 years ago, I walked to the met from my place and realized when I arrived that I had forgotten my wallet. I had the same interaction - you have to donate something but any amount more than $0 is okay. So I walked to the fountain in front and grabbed a penny out of it that someone had used to make a wish. I then turned around and saw a huge group of Chinese tourists cracking up and taking pictures of me. Haters gonna hate. They accepted my penny donation and I got into the museum.
I’ve never experienced any difficulty getting into the three listed institutions free of charge with NY state ID.
Free Bronx zoo with New York State ID? What about kids?
Yeah I have a NY drivers license. Will that get me into the aquarium for free? Lol
Hello dear newyorkers and fans of the big apple,
I am coming from Europe to visit NYC for 10 days, and i was wondering if i can enter certain meuseums for free (trying to minimize the budget here 😊). I searched on the internet and i found out that on somedays the MET, the MOMA on friday night and the museum of natural history are free entry. But is it free for residents of NYC only or tourists can also enjoy the museums for free at certain days? Thx
MoMa is free for everyone fridays from 5:30-9:00. Whitney used to be 'pay what you want' on friday evening. Met is 'pay what you want' for residents and students of NY, Nj, CT or a member can take 1 penson for free.
And Guggenheim Museum has one Saturday per month with free admission
Just so you know, the free nights at museums are typically extremely crowded shitshows. At least they were pre-covid, not sure if there are still stricter capacity limits.
As a tourist—some stuff is ‘pay what you want’ entry, but I think you should budget some money towards paying entry. They don’t acquire art, staff and clean themselves magically with no funds.
Entry prices for museums will be nothing compared to the accommodation and food budget.
What a useless reply
It's already taken care of weeks ago Thanks for the useless input
The option of popping in for 20 minutes and checking out some inspired work, on a break calls to me. I’m not oppose to paying as I wish but I’d like to know which museums honor that? Getting conflicting google searches of “free museums” like the Brooklyn museum or botanical garden but on the website there’s no mention. Just wondering how does it work?
Brooklyn Museum is pay what you want (aside from special exhbits), so yeah basically free.
Brooklyn Botanical Garden is not, but they have "Winter Weekdays" (December–February) that is pay what you wish.
Thanks, good to know. Brooklyn museum I walk in and just go to admissions? Not at a certain time or anything?
Yeah, pretty sure you just go to the front at any point of the day. No day restrictions from what I remember
Culture pass has free museum tickets if you have a Brooklyn library card
Thanks! :))
This list seems pretty comprehensive. Most of the “pay what you wish” places will tell you the suggested price and then it’s up to you to tell them what you will pay. Some of them require that you give at least a penny.
There are also a lot of ways you can free or discounted admission to the paid places. Bank of America has a program where cardholders can get free or discounted admission to museums. Alumni of some NYC colleges also get free or discounted admission at some museums. Some places will give you discounted admission if you work for a nonprofit or educational institution and have your work ID. Journalists can get in free at most places with a press pass (it depends on the museum how strict they are about what they’ll consider a “press pass.”) The front desk people at NYC museums tend to be underpaid art school grads who don’t particularly care about being sticklers for the full admission price, so don’t be embarrassed to try to take advantage of whatever discounts you can.
Thanks for the info
The Met is "free", entry is a "suggested donation". Pay as little as you want.
Most galleries are free as well but not all keep hours open for the public so you'd have to check which ones are open to the public.
Thanks! Have yet to go to the Met
I like to go during the week on quiet rainy days. There's something very vibey about The Met on rainy days. Great way to get inspired.
Brooklyn botanical garden is free if you click on community tickets
I saw a lot of free museum sites where most Friday nights are free but they're for residents. Are there free ones for non residents? Thanks!
Saturdays at the Guggenheim are "pay as you wish" from 5-8 pm.
Thanks! Guggenheim does seem like one of the must see museums.
No worries. The Basquiat exhibition on the top floor is really powerful. Enjoy!
Here's a good listing of free/reduced entry fee museums.
Thanks! I'm considering MOMA PS1 and Japan Society.
Pro tip: Be a good person and donate money to the museums anyway. They need it.
True!
Hi NYBWT- art lover and current museum worker here :)
I know we all love the MoMA and The Met but I hope in 2025 I can challenge all of you to try some new museums and experiences.
In no particular order here are some museums I recommend for all of you!
AND if you're still craving The Met- the exhibition that will probably change my life if is opening in February. It will be the first major showcase of Caspar David Friedrich's work in the USA- so if you love Austrian romanticism like I do- definitely make sure you get out there :)
Also for anyone looking for a list of venues that offer free/suggested admission the city provides a list here!
edit: forgot the Whitney, new museum, Neue, and the Morgan
I'm really looking forward to the Frick Collection reopening! I hope their renovations of the new spaces are worth the wait. tho I'll probably give it a few months to let the crowds subside.
and I've been meaning to make uptown to the Hispanic Society but haven't yet! has anyone been before? they were also closed for quite a while iirc.
also highly recommend The Cloisters for ppl who like medieval stuff, and the grounds are beautiful.
Thank you for mentioning the Hispanic Society! I went years ago when it was closed, but the Sorolla murals were open. I did a tour, which was amazing. One room, but there was so much to see. Looks like the whole museum is open now!
And please don't forget The New York Historical — New York's first museum!! They have an absolutely jaw dropping collection of Tiffany lamps among other great things to check out. It's right next to Natural History, just look for the Abe Lincoln statue.
My favorite current exhibits there are: Pets in The City, Pride and Protest, Real Clothes, Real Lives: 200 Years of What Women Wore. The latter is within the Center for Women's History (an absolute must see for any BWT).
Queens Museum also has a nice Tiffany lamp collection and also the Panorama of NYC which is one of my favorite things in the city!
I have been planning to visit this museum. Do you know how much time I should allocate for it? Particularly I want to see the 200 Years of What Woman Wore. How big is the exhibition? Thank you!
l'd say 2-3 hours depending on how big of a museum person you are. Real Clothes Real Lives is small but has a lot of interesting content so maybe 30-45 mins there. Pets is huge but you don't necessarily need to read every label so probably 30 mins there too. The permanent collection galleries are pretty diverse between paintings, historical items, and decorative items like the Tiffany lamps, so it just depends how interested you are in those.
Also they have a great docent led tour for your first time
The museum’s Manager of Living History, Cheyney McKnight/Not Your Momma’s History, is a BWT herself
The Whitney museum is my favorite in the city.
This is an incredible list!!! I love the transit museum. We all gripe about the MTA but it is actually so fascinating that these tunnels dug over a century ago are getting modern day people to jobs that those late 1800s - early 1900s workers couldn't even conceive of.
Also big fan of the tenement museum for similar reasons. I love seeing what things have changed so dramatically and what things have stayed surprisingly the same. I've only been once but would love to go again soon for one of their other tours!
Love the transit museum. As an advertising nerd, I could easily spend all day in the tunnel - All the old ads in cars!!!!
Saving this list! Going to the NY Historical Society this week!
