The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)
The Met is often considered the crown jewel of NYC's art museums. It's renowned for its vast collection spanning thousands of years and cultures, making it a must-visit for first-timers [4:1]
[5:2]. However, it's important to note that the Met is no longer "pay-what-you-wish" unless you are a NY resident
[5:3].
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
MoMA is another iconic institution known for its impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by Van Gogh, Monet, Diego Rivera, and Frida Kahlo [4:2]. It's an excellent choice for those interested in modern art and offers a vibrant atmosphere for appreciating art with fellow visitors
[4:3].
The Whitney Museum of American Art
The Whitney focuses on 20th and 21st-century American art, offering a diverse range of exhibitions [1:1]
[2:8]. It is praised for its engaging exhibits and has been recommended as a top choice over other major museums like the Guggenheim
[2:8].
The Frick Collection
Recently reopened, the Frick Collection is celebrated for its unique architecture and intimate setting, showcasing European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts [1:5]
[4:1]. It's considered an underappreciated gem among NYC museums
[4:1].
The Cloisters
Part of The Met, The Cloisters is located in Fort Tryon Park and specializes in medieval European art and architecture. It's noted for its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, making it a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle [1:5]
[4:1].
Brooklyn Museum
While opinions vary, the Brooklyn Museum offers a broad collection and often hosts contemporary exhibitions [1:10]. Some visitors find its curation lacking
[1:12], so checking current exhibits before visiting is advisable
[5:2].
Other Notable Mentions
These museums offer a rich tapestry of art and history, catering to varied interests and providing a comprehensive cultural experience in New York City.
The Met, MoMA and Guggenheim are great but I’ve gone a lot now and would like to hear about some other museums worth checking out. Thanks!
Brooklyn Museum, Museum of the Moving Image, Museum of the City of New York.
Museum of the city of NY has been my fave for years. Has the bonus on beautiful days to be across the street from one of the most beautiful gardens in NYC.
I was a little disappointed by the museum of the city of New York when i went
Brooklyn museum is a poorly curated mess at best…
The Frick? Depends on what they're showing, but the Whitney?
Second the Whitney. It’s always great.
Morgan library is interesting. There are a bunch of galleries downtown too. Met Cloisters uptown.
Second the Morgan Library. I went expecting it to be a quick visit and didn't actually manage to get through everything before they closed
the last biennial was dog shit but yes, Whitney has a great collection and usually great exhibits
The Frick reopens 4/17! Exciting news! Its been closed for years - great museum.
The Met cloisters if you haven’t been up there !
Also the frick just reopened and the ny historical society often has cool exhibits if you keep an eye on it
Tenement museum and Museum of the Moving Image among others are recommended by Museums worth checking out besides the big ones. Poster House and Rubin Museum among others are recommended by I want to go to an art museum. Anyone got a very underappreciated art museum rec?
The Rubin Museum is permanently closed.
Hi! In July I will be visiting New York for the first time (yay!) and I am planning my visit. I have already included visits to the MoMA and the Museum of Natural History; what other museum do you recommend I visit between the Met and the Guggenheim? (in case I can’t visit both) Can you please tell me the pros and cons (if any lol) of each? Thank you very much in advance!
Met is enormous with so many exhibits - definitely that over guggenheim, unless you have a specific exhibit at guggenheim you are interested in.
But, if I may add one to your dashboard - the intrepid air, sea, and space museum is one of the coolest museums in existence.
Since you're already seeing art, I'd recommend the Tenement Museum, the Museum of the City of New York or the New York Historical Society to get a more in-depth look of the city
The Museum of the City of New York is such an underrated museum. It’s terrific and if anyone is looking for great NY inspired souvenirs, their gift shop is the way to go. It’s also right across the street from a a great little secret garden in Central Park.
As someone who has been to nearly every museum in the city, it’s my favorite museum alongside the Transit Museum. The exhibits are incredibly well-researched and I always learn something new. They had a basketball in NYC exhibit a couple years back and it was a top ten exhibit of all time for me. Plus, the staff are very friendly and it’s rarely crowded.
I always recommend the tenement museum! It’s amazing and has such a great little shop too
I’d recommend the Museum of the American Indian & Customs House in Bowling Green. It’s free and the Customs House interior is so beautiful.
The Met over anything else, easily
The Whitney over both
The architecture alone makes it worth a visit.
Cooper Hewitt is great and not super overwhelming, whereas the Met is, well, the Met
Went there a few weeks ago with German guests and it was a letdown. First floor was closed. I’d never even heard of it but it was included in one of their German tour books.
Everyone speaks about the Moma and Met but what are your favorite museums in the city?
The transit museum was one I recently discovered and it was pretty cool!
love Museum City of New York
Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. I visited in like 9th or 10th grade and it solidified what I wanted to do with my life.
I’m biased because my partner works there, but MOMI really is amazingly rad. Absolutely worth the trek out to queens.
The Tenement Museum is awesome (definitely take a tour!)
The Noguchi is peaceful and unique, and the perfect size in that you can reasonably see it all during your visit.
Loved Noguchi ! Plan to make a reservation before you go
It’s similarly lauded like the MOMA and the Met, but Natural History is always amazing.
Intrepid is also dope.
What’s your favorite museum/science center to visit in the city?
The Met is the grande dame. It's my favorite without hesitation.
The Museum of Natural History I really enjoy but a lot owes to nostalgia.
The Cloisters for being an underappreciated, tranquil treasure that feels like a secret.
The Neue Galerie because I really love art deco and expressionist art.
The Frick is an underappreciated midtown UES museum with iconic architecture.
Cooper Hewitt is a museum of design in the Andrew Carnegie mansion (worth going for that alone).
The Rubin Museum of Art for its tranquility and really informative and well designed exhibits. I always learn a ton there and leave feeling calmer than when I entered.
The New Museum for interesting contemporary art.
Honorable mentions: The Whitney, the Met Breuer, the Asia Society
Museums I haven't been to but which are supposed to be great: The Tenement Museum, El museo del Barrio
I would definitely include MoMa here , their collection is insane. Some of the most important pieces of modern art are there, not to mention their incredible archive . Their Van Gogh and Monet stuff is beautiful , they also own beautiful pieces that they keep in their basement and show every now and then, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo for example . One of my favorite museums
I grew up and went to college (i.e. spent the first 21 years of my life) in Washington DC - aka the Land of Museums. When I would visit NYC as a kid/teenager, I would go to the well-known museums here - Met, MOMA, etc. I have been to a lot of museums. I went to the Cooper Hewitt for the first time a few months ago, and I can’t remember ever having had a more enjoyable time at a museum. The interactiveness of it - it’s like a Funland for geeky design-loving grown-ups. I heartily second this recommendation!!
Really depends on what kind of people you’re going with and/or your mood.

The Met. Nothing else compares, imo.
The Met is better than the Louvre.
I went there and am totally serious.
The Prado is better than either of them though. The Met is definitely in secomd place though.
The museum at FIT (the Fashion Institute of Technology). It's free. They have from one to three small exhibits of fashion, usually including various garments on a theme, with a good selection of historical garments, as well as menswear vs. women's wear, examples from various countries and subcultures, etc. Sometimes the smaller gallery has an exhibit that isn't fashion/garments and instead is about design, print, fiber arts, etc. I always come away with inspiration for my own work.
It's not always obvious what is there - the largest gallery is downstairs through the kind of door that usually leads to non-public space, and the smallest is to the right down a hallway. it's not always clear that these galleries are open (or even there!), so always ask the guard in the lobby what is open. They will sometimes also guide you to an exhibit of student work just across the street.
It's about five blocks from Penn Station, so easy to stop by as part of a larger trip. And it's not far from the High Line either. There are quite a few decent places to eat nearby. Did I mention it's free? And clean bathrooms! Make a note of it in case you're in the area with a bit of time to kill.
So far on my list I have the MET, MOMA, New Museum, Vito Schnabel Gallery, Brooklyn Museum (kaws haha), Gagosian, and maybe the Whitney and Guggenheim. Any other must see spots?
To mention: The Met is pay what you wish, so you can give them a quarter. There was a huge foundation grant to allow this. (Remember not to feel guilty, many museums in Europe are free for artists). Note that museums have free or pay what you wish nights, again you save a lot of money this way, if that matters. Chelsea galleries are worth a buzz through if you have time. Note the Met takes a long time. Check out the shows on at the Gug, Whit, and Brook before going to them, sometimes there is a bunch of crap that makes it not worth going. A great little museum with older stuff is the Frick, check it out online to see.
The Met is NOT pay-what-you-wish. It’s $25 for out of state visitors
Met is no longer pay what you wish unless you are a NY resident.
I don’t know that seeing as many Basquiats as you can in a week is the best use of your time. I’d say don’t miss the Earth Room or the Broken Kilometer, both free and a few blocks from each other. The Merode Altarpiece + The Unicorn Tapestries + the view at the Cloisters is worth the trip uptown. You’d probably want to do one day in Chelsea, one day downtown galleries. The Frick used to be really special, haven’t been since they relocated. I’d skip the Brooklyn Museum, partly because Kaws sucks. The best use of a day would be to take a train up to Dia: Beacon — they’re open with advanced reservations, and for my money that’s one of the best art viewing experiences in the world.
Yes, Dia: Beacon is incredible, it’s well worth the trip.
Dream House and Mmuseum are also interesting site-based installations in the same(ish) area.
Isn’t PS1 still around?
One of my favorite art museums!
Get the See Saw app when you get in and checkout all the gallery shows
The hole
...is a terrible gallery.
What’s wrong with the Hole?
I'll be traveling to NYC soon and I'm still debating on what museums I'm going to visit. To help me make me final decisions, I would like to hear from people that have already visited NYC and see their recommendations. Thank you in advance!
I live in the city. The 9/11 museum is really exceptional. The museum of natural history is really cool, and the Guggenheim has some cool stuff and you can get through the exhibits quickly if art isn’t really your thing
I loved the Met. I thought it would be boring, but it wasn’t.
I really like the MET Cloisters. The size is really manageable and the grounds were pretty.
In some places the grounds themselves are an exhibit... like they shipped pieces of a historical castle to NYC.
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is one of my favorites.
I haven’t been but always wanted to go. You have to plan ahead and book in advance. Day of bookings on any day can be difficult.
I don't know how things are now, but pre-virus, I usually booked on the day of.
Yes! Such an interesting place.
I fourth this!
Mine too
The Morgan library is my favorite museum in the city
I'm visiting NYC in late May/early June with my other half and our 17-year-old son and I'm looking for museum recommendations.
I don't dislike art, per se, but I'd rather spend an hour listening to an expert talk about a single painting than several hours trying to see as much of a vast museum as I can. (Plus, I'm used to going to museums for free in London and only looking at one or a handful of paintings doesn't seem like a very efficient use of my overstretched $.)
The Tenement Museum is definitely on my list and we may go the Morgan Library, too, if we can get free tickets. The V&A is one of my favourite museums in London, but NYC's Museum of Arts and Design doesn't look quite as good. (Or am I wrong?) Where else would you recommend?
Have you considered the Cooper Hewitt or The Frick? Both have some lovely exhibits and neither are so vast that it seems never ending.
Seconding Cooper Hewitt, it's very interactive (as in literally, lots of exhibits to interact with).
I also like the Museum of the City of NY, which has specific, interesting exhibits you won't get elsewhere.
OP, also CH has "pay what you wish" admission from 5-6 on Thursday-Monday. For other museums, don't forget to utilize your son's student ID for reduced admission $.
The Tenement Museum is a great choice.
Besides that, the Museum of Natural History is a classic. And based on your description, you might enjoy the Museum of the Moving Image.
Yeah, I’d go with the Museum of Natural History, Museum of the Moving Image, and Museum of the City of New York as good choices for OP.
Second Museum of the Moving Image!
The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn could be a good option.
Best part of the exhibits are being able to walk through and explore the old subway cars that ran all over the city. Great insight into NYC's transit history as well.
Highly recommend.
Yes, this museum rules.
Museum of the Moving Image! It's my favorite
100x this. Also the NY Transit museum is so fun - so many old trains that you can walk through and touch
I just went to the Museum of the American Indian recently at Battery Park City and really liked it! It’s located inside of the Alexander Hamilton Customs House and near a nice view of the Statue of Liberty.
Also since it’s a Smithsonian institution, it’s free.
NY Historical Society and Museum of the City of NY is a close second
Do you know if the gallery with The Course of Empire paintings is open again?
Museum of the Moving Image is pretty cool
That's my favorite museum also
It's also free on Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m.! We went a while back when they had the Jim Henson exhibit and had a blast.
The Met. The range and depth of its collection is unparalleled, except for the Hermitage, the Louvre and a handful of others. It's also essentially free for New Yorkers. What's to complain about?
For a more intimate experience, the Frick. The beauty and elegance of the building rivals those of its collection.
Wait how is the Met free for NYers? I went many moons ago, so don't remember but I think I and an NY friend had to pay.
I always have a great time at the museum of natural history going through the hyperrealistic dioramas
I work as a volunteer at The Museum of Natural History on Tuesdays and Fridays
Fotografiska. Small and intimate. No permanent exhibits, so the art is ever changing. Wine available, so you can drink and pontificate.
Also love the zen of the Noguchi Museum.
I prefer the smaller museums.
+1 to Fotografiska! Literally went yesterday to the David LaChapelle exhibit for the first time and it was super cool.
I also live right by Noguchi and it’s so underrated.
The museum is actually pretty small, but usually 3-4 floors are all exhibits. Each floor has a ton of art of look at. It’s hard to describe because none of the exhibits are permanent, so they’re always changing the layout, lighting, etc.
I usually spend about an hour there. I do stop to read some of the stories, typically with a wine glass in hand lol. You can get wine at the bar on the first floor and take it with you.
Ah yes, my favorite museums:
"Poster House"
"Metropolitan Museum o Fart"
"Museum"
Metropolitan Museum o Fart 😂
I'll be visiting at the end of march for one week.
Time is marching fast while having fun, therefore i'd like to go straight to the goals.
MOMA, MET and Whitney are my top 3 choices so far, not only because of their permanent collections, but also for their exhibitions that will be held in that time, like Epic Abstraction: Pollock to Herrera @ MET and Andy Warhol From A to B and Back Again @ Whitney.
Any suggestion will be highly appreciated, the Museum mile is long and densely provided with ART

I mean moma and whitney both are decent IF what they have on display is appealing at the moment
New Museum is another awesome space for contemporary works.
Get the See Saw app. Plan ahead and you can hit a ton of galleries.
They meant this: https://seesawmap.com/
although I prefer Artforum's listings:
https://www.artforum.com/artguide/place/new-york
edit: Seesaw is a decent overview of what's showing. Artforum's listings are still discerning but more comprehensive.
Brooklyn Museum is excellent! It's like a smaller (but still huge) Met with, IMO, a better modern/contemporary collection. They're also super mindful about representation and have a good balance of women and artists of color. A bit of a train ride but nothing awful. It's a recommended donation so theoretically you can get in for as little as free, but give if you can.
Thank you, I'll stay in FIDI, so not far at all. I'll visit also Brooklyn
I feel like PS1 isn't too expensive.
What are the top art museums to visit in New York City
Here are some top art museums to visit in New York City:
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Whitney Museum of American Art
Brooklyn Museum
The Frick Collection
Recommendation: If you have limited time, prioritize The Met and MoMA for their extensive collections. Consider purchasing a CityPASS for discounted admission to multiple attractions.
