Museums and Cultural Spots
New York City offers a plethora of museums that are perfect for couples who enjoy cultural and historical experiences. The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria features interactive exhibits, including a Jim Henson exhibit [1:1]. The Brooklyn Museum is another great option, located near Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, allowing for a full day of exploration
[1:1]. For those interested in history, the NY Historical Society and the Museum of the City of NY provide informative experiences
[1:2].
Outdoor Adventures
For couples who prefer outdoor activities, kayaking on the Hudson River or paddle boating in Central Park can be exciting options [3:1]. Governors Island offers opportunities for picnics and bike rides, providing a scenic escape from the bustling city
[3:1]. Another unique spot is the Little Red Lighthouse, which offers picturesque views and a romantic setting
[4:3].
Unique Date Ideas
Couples looking for something different might consider roller skating, escape rooms, or visiting art cafes like Happy Medium [2:2]. Magic shows such as Urban Illusions in the East Village offer an entertaining experience
[2:3]. Additionally, the Amateur Astronomers Association hosts free telescope observations, perfect for a night under the stars
[2:5].
Romantic Experiences
For a romantic touch, a sunset stroll on the Brooklyn Bridge followed by rooftop drinks in Midtown can create a memorable evening [3:3]. Picnicking in Central Park's Sheep’s Meadow or taking a Circle Line cruise around Manhattan are other charming options
[3:2]. Exploring the West Village or enjoying dinner at a cozy restaurant adds to the romantic ambiance
[3:4].
Classes and Workshops
Engaging in classes or workshops can be a fun way for couples to bond. Brooklyn Brainery offers various classes, including DIY hot sauce and other creative activities [5:1]. A wine and paint class in the Lower East Side provides a relaxed atmosphere for artistic expression
[5:2]. Pottery and painting classes in Brooklyn also make for enjoyable couple activities
[5].
Hey all, my bf and I (both 20yo) love going to interesting museums like MET Cloisters, Intrepid museum, etc. Looking for some fun exciting date afternoon ideas of cool spots in or around nyc. If there is history, activities, or animals involved we are down- i’d love to hear suggestions. I appreciate it!
For animal lovers, the Central Park Zoo is a nice option with a more intimate scale.
If weather is challenging, go out to Brooklyn and visit the Cat Cafe: https://catcafebk.com
Some other museums include the Museum of Arts and Design on Columbus Cir which is adjacent to the park and there is a Xmas market across the circle as well as The Shops at Columbus Cir.
NY Historical Society on the Upper West Side and The Museum of the City of NY on the Upper East Side are both very informative. El Museo del Barrio is closed to the City of NY Museum.
Do you have a NY library card? If so, go into culture pass and check out all the places you can get free tickets to (not that you were asking for free stuff, simply a bonus).
No, dyk do you have to be a ny resident to get one? Were from NJ. Ty this is such a good tip though!
You do need to be a resident, yes.
Use search bar or the guides.
You can find them in the side bar for new and old Reddit.
They’re in the community resources on mobile.
Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria is great - the Jim Henson exhibit alone is worth the trip (do Muppets count as animals?), and there are a lot of neat interactive stations that would make for a fun date.
The Brooklyn Museum is usually interestingly curated, and it's right next to both Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, so you can make a whole day of it in nice weather.
In further deep cuts, the Queens Museum usually has offbeat art exhibits, and the room-size Panorama model of NYC is surprisingly cool to look at. Pair that with getting Dim Sum in Flushing.
I've only ever been there for a wedding so I can't speak to the normal visitor experience, but the Queens Farm Museum might also fit the bill if you're looking for animal-related places.
Hey everyone!
I was wondering if knows of unique/unheard of date ideas and locations to do in the city. I feel like I've done everything there is to do in the city (visiting the piers like Pier 25 minigolf, visiting museums, going through central park, doing all the touristy things, etc).
I know of some unique places like puttery (indoor minigolf in general) but they all require you to be 21+ which I am not. I've been to spyscape, comedy shows, broadway plays, shipwrecked, color factory, ice cream musuem etc. Are there any other ideas anyone has that are similar to these? Essentially I'm looking for more indoor activities that aren't just eating and walking around but would be good for a date! And if possible, on the less pricy side please! (Like max 50 dollars per person but under would be better for a broke college student).
Thank you all so much!
Edit: Sorry if I didn’t clarify, but these are activities I’m asking for a significant other!
Roller Skating, art cafe at Happy Medium, escape rooms, libraries, opera, off Broadway/smaller theater shows, art shows (lots of events on partiful & Instagram), governors island, roosevelt island, park events, etc.
Go to a magic show! My personal recommendation is Urban Illusions in the East Village.
First dates, or date nights with a significant other? Big difference
Sorry I didn’t specify, but a significant other! Almost 2.5 years actually :)
Check out some of the cultural centers and their free events.
Some of their events include free food and drinks.
NYC has so much cultural stuff and yet most people don't take advantage of them.
AAA.com or amateur astronomers association!
They do free observations, with provided telescopes. I’m taking my sweetheart out and we’re considering getting a membership for more direct outings !
Tons of talks, live podcasts and lectures to check out - look at event programming at NYPL, 92Y, and museums. Often free. Eventbrite will also feature these.
The Lefrak center in prospect park had kayaks you can rent to go out into the lake, it’s fun and pretty reasonably priced, iirc.
Brooklyn cat cafe is a fun date, too!
Just moved to New York! My boyfriend's visiting in a few weeks so I'm planning to show him around. It's also just in time for our anniversary so looking for romantic things to do in the city! Dinner, museums, fun activities, anything like that really!
What part of NY? There are no shortage of options. Are you working with a budget - if so provide it with real numbers as this will avoid some one recommending either Punjabi Deli (which is tasty) vs Daniel (which i$ ta$ty).
A couple easy ones
All great ideas here I especially luv Governor’s Island and or a picnic in Central Park in Sheep’s meadow A rooftop bar to watch the sunset, a circle line cruise around the island of Manhattan you can catch on the Hudson River and 42nd St Walk from the top of CP at 110th st to the sanctuary off of Fifth Ave near 100th st is so peaceful and beautiful a great romantic spot too Top of the Rock in Rockefeller center for great views Stroll around the West Village Have fun 🤩
Welcome to NYC! 🗽 A sunset stroll on the Brooklyn Bridge, rooftop drinks in Midtown, and a cozy dinner in the West Village would be perfect. Happy early anniversary! 💕
Sunset walk on the Brooklyn Bridge, picnic in Central Park, and maybe dinner at a rooftop spot, can’t go wrong with that vibe!
A rooftop spot sounds like a great idea! Do you have any reco?
awwww you go girl! anywhere will be romantic as long as you two are together 🥰
Hang out on your roof at night
I’m new to New York. What are some activities or places to do or try for taking a guy on a date? What are your go to spots that you recommend
One that my husband and discovered when we moved to Astoria is the ferry. You can bring a cooler and have some drinks on the rooftop, ride it from east 90th to Wall Street and back (or however far you want to go), for $4 a person. It’s a great way to see the NY skyline, especially at sunset.
They’re OK with alcohol?
Last year they sold it on board if you want beer, but we sometimes just bring a cooler or put wine in a tumblr and bring some cups. They haven’t sold it yet so it might be a summer thing or they may have stopped selling.
Oh my gosh, have I got the one for you, my friend! When I was dating around, I had a secret weapon locale that STILL has the guys I took there over a decade ago reminiscing about what a perfect afternoon and picture perfect first date that was. They were all practically writing their wedding vows on the walk home afterwards, and it is my pleasure to pass this information to you and everyone else on this thread. If you don’t know it already, allowme to introduce you to your new favorite NYC landmark:
The Little Red Lighthouse.
For maximum impact on your date, I advise familiarizing yourself at least a little with the lighthouse’s incredibly charming history. (Romanticizing this history as you tell it out loud on your adventure there together will most assuredly captivate your date’s attention as he taps into his childhood sense of wonder and imagining life’s endless possibilities.) In short, the lighthouse’s backstory involves many decades as an internationally beloved literary icon, portrayed as the hero of Hildegard H. Swift’s 1942 classic children’s book entitled The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge. (There’s a free version of the book on YouTube, beautifully scored with music and narrated brilliantly if you want to check it out.) Anyway, the book was a hit back then, and remains popular to this day. In 1948, (this is real life, not a synopsis of the book) the lighthouse was no longer needed because of the newly constructed George Washington Bridge directly overhead, with lights 10x brighter than the lighthouse’s. So the lighthouse was decommissioned and was to be auctioned off for scrap metal. When word got out about this, there was an enormous outcry from, of all groups, children. Children everywhere revolted against the destruction of their favorite book’s hero. They wrote OpEd articles that made it all the way to the New York Times, some kids were interviewed on local and national radio shows, and thousands of kids sent literal pennies to the mayor of New York City in hopes that their donations could save the lighthouse from demolition. The mayor was so moved by this reaction from children all over the world that he cancelled the auction and donated the lighthouse to NYC Parks so the lighthouse could continue being a symbol of hope and strength for generations to come.
Plus; it’s situated on the rocky shoreline of the Hudson River (you can climb out there and sneak a kiss, leaning against the lighthouse if you’re feeling it) where George Washington led some of the most famous battles in the Revolutionary War. If you look around, you’ll find old pieces of metal drilled into the rocks that Washington used to tether boats to and to help transport war supplies across the Hudson. Very cool.
There’s something about the lighthouse defying all odds both in the book and in real life that resounds with our cultural identities as gay men, so you and your date are likely to remember your afternoon with Little Red for quite some time.
I saw that a gay couple became the first documented couple in history to get engaged up on top of the lighthouse back in 2020. It took 120 years for someone to be the first, and I love that it was the gays!
Best date location ever. Guaranteed to get you a second date whether you want it or not.
Found a picture of the couple that got engaged up top, look how sweet!!! https://historichousetrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/DonateToday.jpg
I’ve done the following stuff as dates and they all turned out great and were fun. These are NOT first date ideas, but date ideas for when you’ve already gone on several dates and a little more serious:
Seconding the AMNH, especially the Rose Center.
Can anyone recommend any fun one day classes/workshops for couples? Preferably in Brooklyn, but Manhattan or Queens is fine too.
I found some pottery and some painting classes that look cool. Does anyone else have any other fun ideas in mind?
Thanks!!
There’s a new wine and paint place that opened in LES, it looked super popular the last time I walked by
Brooklyn Brainery has a lot of great classes. Not sure if they are transitioning back to in-person yet, but I took one of their virtual classes (DIY hot sauce) and enjoyed it.
Hi everybody, my partner and I will be in NYC this Friday-Sunday and are looking for free interesting/romantic things to do during our time there, any recommendations? Besides walk around and see the sights, we have that planned already :) Thank you so much!!
r/visitNYC
Hi guys! I was hoping some of you could share what you’ve been doing for fun in the city with your partners. We’re both homebodies but love a good date night. Somehow I feel I see cool events after the fact. Thank you!
Hi! If you’re looking for a more self guided wine experience date night I highly recommend going to Corkbuzz in Union Square. My boyfriend and I went a few weeks ago and ordered the “three blind wines” for both red and white. It’s $25 and you get three tasting glasses of different types of wine (we had 3 for white and 3 for red). They give you this awesome sheet that lets you review the wine and decide which ones you like- at the end they reveal which wine is which. It’s a fun intimate way to find out what kind of wine you like. It’s a sexy atmosphere and reservations aren’t competitive!

Temperance in WV also does this on some nights!
I love going to greenpoint for bar hopping and dinner (we live in Manhattan). Our personal fave include: the hidden pearl, oxomoco, little rascal, love birds, ask for Janice, Paulie gee slice shop
Bonus points for taking the ferry there!
Other GP spots for dates: Achilles Heel (fireplace!), Wenwen (Taiwanese dinner spot), Troost (live music most nights), Faurschou gallery (free art foundation), Happy Medium (art cafe), Goodland (indoor pickleball courts), Ferox (ninja gym w adult nights), Kettl (amazing matcha w fun classes), Hana Makgeoli (off the beaten path spot Korean rice wine)
Seconding Ask For Janice!!
Oxomoco is 🤤
Mercer Labs in Fidi. Expected it to be overrated and kind of like the scam Van Gogh experience, but was proven wrong—super cool and quality visuals/sensory experiencs. Date and I took chocolate shrooms and just walked around doing all the little interactive activities lol.
Mercer Labs! 🙌🏻👌🏻
Date Night at the Met, every Fri + Sat! https://www.metmuseum.org/events/programs/met-live-arts/date-night
Second this!! It’s fun to grab a drink and then wander the galleries!
Ok it’s a bit pricey but we’re bitches with taste so… AIRE!!
YES! also my favorite AIRE trick with taste is to snag their Black Friday deals and use the certificate whenever you want (they never expire). Get that beefed up couples experience with a massage!!!
The Met Cloisters/Fort Tryon Park The Ford Foundation Atrium The Morgan Library
Jazz clubs and french restaurants
Shakespeare in the Park https://publictheater.org/productions/season/2425/fsitp/twelfth-night/

You can take each other to places that have meaning to you or you'd like to make memories at. And you can write notes or love letters and explain to give her along the day.
Make some kind of challenge, like walk over every bridge, eat food from every country, hit every major park, walk the grid, walk the perimeter of Manhattan, etc.
The beach and boardwalk, year round. You can ride rides. You can also go down to the Jersey shore for boardwalk action as well.
Hit the roller rink or skate around the city. Ice skate in the winter.
There is a little arcade like place, Game Room in Industry City. It has limited hours. But I think it's 8 for 2.5 hours. https://www.yelp.com/biz/game-room-brooklyn There is also a board game place there. You can pay $12 hour 4 hours of play or borrow a game for the same price. Around there, there are many places to sit inside and out, where you can chill out and talk. You can technically BYOF and you could BYO drinks as well. But there are a number of places to eat.
Board game cafes in general can be fun.
You go could shoot arrows: https://www.got-archery.com/ Or some other physical activity like that.

You could find a class of something else that interests you. Check out coursehorse.com
Check out an art experience, like sculpture without sight: https://www.unarthodox.com/ Or paint night: https://www.paintnite.com/us/ny/new-york
There are so many drawing sessions, you could find one that appeals.
Buy art supplies at the dollar store and have a home or park art night. Or get a hotel room and do an art night.

Open mics.
There is a Catacombs by Candlelight tour that is pretty interesting: https://takeawalk.com/#catacombs-by-candlelight-tour

Did you just type all that up just now? Or do you have this prepared answer ready to go? In either case, I'm super impressed!
Thank you! I have a working list of various going out ideas because it's always nice to have them. And i forget about things sometimes. I try to edit it to reflect the question (but ofc miss things), but generally these are things I have shared here or somewhere else before.
Same here, I was like wow!
Excellent list! Saving this.
Wowza. Thanks!
Saving this! Thank you 🙏🏻
Me and my gf have been super stressed and we need something fun romantic lighthearted to do. It doesn’t need to be cheap nor super duper expensive but something planned. Let me know.

Coffee and donuts at the Donut Pub counter.
Central Park after sunset is pretty magical. Grab some takeout and find a quiet spot near the reservoir or Bethesda Fountain.
Been a while since we went out. She’s been at home a month straight with an injury and is crazy bored. I want to do something interesting. We’ve done stuff at the mckindrick that was fun. Looking for something interactive like that.
Any ideas? We are 30s, from the Bronx and Brooklyn. And are into food but want something more. Any kind of help would be really appreciated. I feel bad she’s been stuck at home while I’ve been working a lot.
