History of Roulette

Origins and Development

Roulette, a popular casino game, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The game is believed to have been invented by French physicist Blaise Pascal in his quest to create a perpetual motion machine [1]. The modern version of roulette was developed in France, with the first official mention of the game occurring in Paris in 1796 [1:11].

Monte Carlo and the Gambler's Fallacy

One of the most famous events in roulette history occurred on August 18, 1913, in Monte-Carlo, where the ball landed on black 26 times in a row. This event led to massive losses for gamblers who believed that a red outcome was "due" based on the gambler's fallacy—the mistaken belief that past events affect future probabilities [1]. Despite the improbability, such streaks are not impossible given the vast number of spins that occur globally [1:8].

Roulette in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, known as Sin City, became synonymous with gambling after Nevada legalized it during the Great Depression in 1931 [3]. Roulette quickly became a staple in casinos, contributing to the city's reputation as a gambling hub. Modern technology now allows players to enjoy roulette from home via online platforms [3:1].

Strategies and Anecdotes

Roulette has inspired various strategies and anecdotes over the years. Players often bet based on personal numbers like birthdays [1:1], while others have experienced remarkable luck with repeated wins [1:2]. However, the reality is that the odds remain constant regardless of previous outcomes, highlighting the randomness of the game [2:4].

Roulette Wheel Mechanics

The mechanics of the roulette wheel have intrigued many, leading to speculation about biases and patterns. Some individuals have studied wheels to exploit biases, as seen in historical cases like the Pelayo family [1:10]. The addition of green 0 and 00 pockets further shifts the odds in favor of the house [1:11].

Overall, roulette remains a fascinating game with a storied history, characterized by its blend of chance and strategy, and continues to captivate players worldwide.

I once won a $1 bet on 12, so I took my $35 in winnings and left $1 on 12 for the next spin.

It hit again. I took another $35 in winnings, left $1 on 12 again.

It hit a third time.

I won $105 in about 5 minutes, but if I'd let it ride, it would have payed over $40,000.

Out of millions of rolls since the existence of roulette, thinking that it's impossible to get 26 in a row is dumb.

About 10 years ago I was in Vegas and some people came to my roulette table and told us that at the casino across the street it hit red something like 26 times in a row. Everybody made a bunch of money that night.

I was trying to do some Fermi estimation to figure out roughly how many games of roulette have been played in the past 150 years.

  • Apparently there are about 10,000 casinos in the world.

  • I have no idea how many casinos have roulette tables, but some probably have none and some probably have quite a few. So let's say they average 1 per casino, so 10,000 roulette tables in the world.

  • I know nothing about roulette, so I have no idea how many spins occur per day. But let's say it averages 100 spins per day per table. That seems low, but oh well, trying to be conservative.

  • That works out to be 365,000,000 spins of a roulette table per year globally, or 55 billion in the last 150 years.

So yeah, it seems like a 26 spin run on black probably should occur somewhere in the world every now and again.

In Vegas it landed on red 15 times in a row. After 7-8 times a lady playing started betting heavy on black and lost her butt off. I actually kept betting on red and ended up winning 500 bucks at that point so it was a nice run for me.

Take any sequence of red and black that is 26 long and the odds are exactly the same… yet no one thinks it’s weird that something so unlikely happens every 26 spins!

I like this as a little thought experiment to understand probability. 52! Is an astronomically large number - our mortal brains are too tiny to comprehend its size. It’s also the number of different unique shuffles that exist from a standard deck of poker cards. Take a deck and shuffle it well - the odds of you getting the specific shuffle you did is mind-blowingly small and yet you got it… and no one else in history or in the future will ever get that exact shuffle again.

Yes, sort of. I would expect it to happen about once in 1664 million spins. How many roulette spins per year, in legitimate casinos? If this event happens once every 50 years, it would not surprise me.

Problem is, you could say that about any given 26-spin sequence of reds/blacks.

There have been multiple instances of people observing roulette tables for a long time and finding these bias and exploiting them. I quickly found this article about a guy doing long ago it but if you want a more recent occurrence, look up the pelayo family.

Some roulette wheels have green 0 and 00 to push it even further into the casinos favour, though I’m too lazy to work out if 38 numbers vs 37 would be the number above :)

I’ve only been to a casino once and it was with some friends who are regulars.

I was watching one of my friends at the roulette table and asked him why he always puts a chip on 12. My friend said it was because his birthday is on the 12th.

So I put a £1 chip on 28 for my birthday and it came in. I jokingly said “oh wow does it work every time” and put another £1 on the 28 and it came in again. Unfortunately it didn’t work a third time but it kept us laughing for a good while.

My first 2 sessions ever at Roulette (6x my money)

Posted by Exxane · in r/roulette · 8 months ago

Went from $200 - $1200 total.

Just turned of age recently and I took a trip to Miami and visited a casino. Knowing that the casino always wins I was prepared to go in to just have fun with $200.

Session 1

I initially started by playing 2 units on 2nd 12 and 1 on 3rd 12 (each unit being $5). Within a couple minutes I was down to about 150. A couple more games a little up and down i decided to put a third of my bankroll on a dozen and it hit. Within 2 minutes I threw a chip on green and hit again. Walked out with around $500.

Session 2

Knowing I was up, I decided to deposit my initial 200 and just go play with profit. Immediately at the table they told me units were $10 chips at that time. I lost the first 2-3 bets on some dozens and saw the girl next to me kept hitting. I threw a $10 chip on 27 since she put some there and it hit… I was up to about 580 and slowly lost it on some big bets on dozens till i was at 250. I took about 150 and bet it on the first 12 dozen, then i took another chip and just put it on 9. I have no idea why but I just did. The fucking Roulette wheel hit 9. I was in immediate disbelief, this all happened within 15 minutes. I got payed out and just left immediately.

I’ve been wanting to go back now that i’m out of Miami and hit up maybe something more local. But no matter how many videos I watch about strategies or whatever it’s just a matter of fact that I got lucky and whatever happened wasn’t likely to ever happen again. I want to play again but don’t want to pay the casinos there money back.

Lol I paid about 22k of my student loans off roulette outside only would go multiple times a week after work. Wish I could tell you after that run how much I lost - think I lost for a year straight.

Barely go now if I do I play a couple spins first - then all blackjack and bacc if I go. If I'm up 3x I'll rip craps.

Funny note: I've lost thousands on second twelve me and my boy id go with call it 2nd12 curse.

Degen note: made 1200 on a Monday was down 500 by Thursday. You'd think that's when I'd call off roulette but nah took a year.

Gamblings fun, a hobby, to make money use your brain and grind the market. It pays more than the casino ever will.

Some findings about the Rouletsplay Wheel

Posted by Padarom · in r/roosterteeth · 4 years ago

Normally I'm not the kind of guy to give in to this because it doesn't really matter too much for me, but with the dozens of guesses I see each and every week on how people assume the current wheel used in Rouletsplay operates I kind of had to.

Don't read this if you want to keep believing in the magic of the Wheel.

----

Most people think it has to do with the specific items on the wheel. Some combination of it not landing on the same spot multiple times, considering every item with the same label as the same, etc.

I looked at the source code of the wheel to figure out whether the location it lands on is predetermined in any way or random. It's littered with bugs and inconsistencies so it was a bit harder to track down than I'd hoped, but the way it works is the following:

  • When you start spinning it determines a random step angle between 20 and 50 degrees (this is the only random part)
  • It will always spin for a fixed amount of time, during which it will tick every 30ms. This time is configurable and defaults to 5 seconds. I think they're using 10 seconds in Rouletsplay
  • When it ticks, it decreases the step angle by a bit and rotates the wheel by that amount. It's slowly easing the step angle down to 0 so that the wheel ends up stopping smoothly
  • Therefore the position it lands on can be entirely determined by the randomly assigned step angle and the starting position of the wheel (which is consistent across page reloads)

It doesn't actually care about what's on the wheel at all while rotating. Only when the rotation stops does it look at what entry it's stopped at, not before. Therefore it doesn't matter how many items you have or what they're called. Now unfortunately even looking at the source code I couldn't figure out why it is consistently not hitting Battlefront for them, but it doesn't have anything to do with the labels or number of items.

To make sure I didn't entirely mess up I replicated their wheel at https://wheeldecide.com/index.php?c1=Dead+by+Daylight&c2=Killing+Floor&c3=Payday&c4=The+Ship&c5=Counter+Strike+GO&c6=Moving+Out&c7=Stick+Fight&c8=Battlefront+2&c9=Battlefront+2&c10=Battlefront+2&c11=Battlefront+2&c12=Battlefront+2&c13=Battlefront+2&c14=Battlefront+2&c15=Battlefront+2&c16=Battlefront+2&c17=Battlefront+2&c18=Battlefront+2&c19=Battlefront+2&c20=Battlefront+2&c21=Battlefront+2&c22=Battlefront+2&c23=Battlefront+2&c24=Battlefront+2&c25=Battlefront+2&c26=Battlefront+2&c27=Battlefront+2&c28=Battlefront+2&col=gw&time=5 and spun it a couple of times (sometimes with, sometimes without a page reload). It starts at the same position as for them and it does always come up with different solutions for me, occasionally non-Battlefront games, but often enough also Battlefront.

You can force it to a specific spot by fixing the RNG. If you right-click the page and choose "Inspect", and type in Math.random = () => 0.52 into the console, the above wheel will always land on Moving Out for instance - At least for the first spin after a page load. You will have to re-enter the code into the console after every reload.

Besides the obvious way of just spinning until it doesn‘t hit Battlefront that's the most plausible way I can think of right now, with which they could coax the wheel away from Battlefront consistently.

WORST GAME SHOW DECISON IN HISTORY 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 (Deal Or No Deal)

Posted by Odd_Position_8286 · in r/mrballen · 4 years ago

(CORRECTION $1. NOT 1¢)

(FOR THOSE WHO DONT, YOU MIGHT BE BETTER OFF LOOKING UP THE RULES THAN READING MY EXPLANATION OF THE RULES) How many of you are familiar with the game show Deal Or No Deal? For those who aren't, it is a game show, where you start by picking a case. Through out the show, you will be opening cases, and depending on the value of the cases you Opend, the banker makes you several offers through out the show. At any time you can accept his offer, or keep denying his offers, until the end of the show where he will make one final offer, and if you don't accept that, you are left with 2 choices, take the case that you have chosen at the beginning, or you can switch it for another case.

At the end of the show, a man had a 3 choices , Take home $416,000,chose his case which could contain $1 million dollars or a penny, or switch it for a case that could contain $1 million dollars or a penny. His mother words "Take the $416,000! I am proud of you! It's not a million but it's still alot of money! Just take it!" His other family members and friends (Paraphrasing) "The number 15 (His case) has always been a lucky number for us". The number 11 (The case he could have switched with) Has always been a unlucky number for us! You can listen to mom, we will love you either way, but we want you to take a chance at the $1 million dollars, despite the fact that there is a 50% chance he could leave with 1¢ (A penny). Not listening to His mother, he denied the $416,000 and risked the 50% 50% chance of a million dollars, or a penny.

Moral of the story, ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER 😭🤦

history of roulette

Key Considerations in the History of Roulette

  1. Origins:

    • Roulette originated in 18th century France. The name "roulette" means "little wheel" in French.
    • The game is believed to have evolved from earlier games like Roly-Poly, Even-Odd, and the Italian game Biribi.
  2. Early Development:

    • The first version of roulette was played with a wheel that had 36 numbers and a single zero.
    • In 1842, Frenchmen François and Louis Blanc introduced the double zero (00) to the game, which increased the house edge.
  3. American Roulette:

    • The American version of roulette includes both a single zero (0) and a double zero (00), which increases the house edge to about 5.26%.
    • This version became popular in the United States during the 19th century, particularly in casinos in New Orleans and later Las Vegas.
