Development of Bella and Edward's Relationship in "Twilight"

Initial Attraction and Rescue

Bella and Edward's relationship begins with a dramatic rescue in Port Angeles, where Edward saves Bella from a dangerous situation [1]. This pivotal moment marks the start of their connection, leading to their first date at La Bella Italia restaurant. During this date, Bella reveals her suspicion that Edward is a vampire, which deepens their bond as she becomes more involved in his mysterious world [1:9].

Edward's Misunderstanding and Realization

Edward initially misunderstands Bella's reactions, often interpreting her increased heart rate as fear rather than attraction [2:1]. His realization of Bella's feelings comes slowly, highlighting his innocence and lack of understanding of human emotions despite his claim of having a good grasp on human nature [2:3]. This gradual awareness contributes to the development of their relationship as Edward starts to comprehend Bella's genuine interest in him.

Emotional and Mental Dynamics

The emotional dynamics between Bella and Edward are complex due to Edward's frozen state of maturity. Although he has lived for over a century, his emotional and mental development remains at the age he was turned into a vampire [3:1]. This aspect of Edward's character plays a crucial role in their relationship, as it explains some of his behaviors and interactions with Bella. Despite the apparent age gap, Edward is portrayed as an immortal teenager, contributing to the unique dynamic between them [3:7].

Portrayal in Books vs. Movies

The portrayal of Bella and Edward's romance differs significantly between the books and movies. In the film adaptation, their relationship appears rushed, with little time to develop before they declare eternal love for each other [4:1]. The books provide more depth and context, allowing readers to understand the foundation of their relationship through extensive dialogue and shared experiences. This difference highlights the importance of reading the books to fully appreciate the nuances of their relationship [4:4].

Shared Experiences and Dates

Throughout their relationship, Bella and Edward share various experiences that strengthen their bond. While specific details of their dates are not extensively covered, fans speculate about activities such as visiting bookstores, attending carnivals, and enjoying quiet moments together [5:6][5:9]. These shared experiences contribute to their connection, offering glimpses into their personal lives beyond the overarching plot of danger and protection.

Overall, Bella and Edward's relationship develops through a combination of dramatic events, emotional misunderstandings, and shared experiences, creating a unique and compelling dynamic that captivates audiences both in the books and films.

Twenty years ago, Bella, Angela and Jessica went to Port Angeles to look for dresses for the prom. While looking for a bookstore, getting lost in the city and getting into a dangerous situation, Bella was saved by Edward and his silver Volvo.

It was their first date, at the La Bella Italia restaurant, over a delicious plate of mushroom ravioli.

On the way home, Bella revealed to Edward that she knew he was a vampire. And then, it all began.

Happy International Women's and Mushroom Ravioli Day!

Edward's "warning" to Bella in Twilight and how deep the love for this story goes in my heart

Posted by Aggravating_Yam2501 · in r/twilight · 1 month ago

Obligatory "I've been a Twihard for 20 years now (omg am I that old?!) And now I enjoy finding silly and/or ridiculous bits

So, fell in love with these ridiculous stories back when I managed a Borders in 2007/2008. I was in DEEP. Like, "spent hours and hours photoshopping all my self-esteem to look like golden-Eyed Cullens" deep.

Its been almost 20 years now; I'm turning 40 tomorrow and started a repeat-binge of the movies last week. Little moments are popping up and making me giggle more than ever now. Perhaps it's my Older Eyes or my lived experiences.

I could mention hundreds but wont; but I encourage you guys to do that in the comments so I can read yours.

Mine?

When Bella "guesses" Edward is a vampire in Twilight and he says, "Are you afraid?" She responds, "No." Theres a bit of back and forth (ZOMG Bella but me = suck blood & Ermehgerd EddieBoy You wont hurt meeeee).

But the part I'm laughing about is after that moment, Edward has this epiphany of, "Look, Imma show you what I look like in the sun *because that's totally gonna help."

Like, sure I get his intention was to drive home that he is "Built to Entice" and be inescapable visually.

But I remember being a teenage girl; If some sexy ass, car accident Savior, jawline-for-days, sweettalker BROUGHT ME UP A MOUNTAIN AND TOOK THEIR CLOTHES OFF AND SPARKLED....

Like, Eddie. Ed. Edward. My boy. That's legit the exact opposite of what you should be doing lol

Anyway- thats all. I'll just be over here giggling and falling in love with these amazing stories over and over again.

Rereading Twilight 15years later

Posted by Both_Candy3048 · in r/fantasyromance · 20 days ago

I cant help but notice how angry and pessimistic Bella is for absolutely everything in the beginning. Also how endearing she is. At the time she got so much hate from the public. Rereading she s just a teenager with some body/brain coordination problems and zero social skills. And good instincts for her age.

My main issue I cant help but notice is how forward Edward is with her. The girl is minding her own business but he keeps appearing wherever she is and trying to make conversation and he gets amused by anything she says (even when there's objectively nothing funny, he just finds her endearing).

So Im just at the beginning of the first book but I remember at some point in 2nd or 3rd book Edward disappears from her life and she's completely crushed. I just cant understand why he did that to her when he was the one pursuing her in the beginning (I know he wanted to protect her and let her have a normal human life but still he could ve thought about that before pursuing her & making her completely fall for him).

Also he's something like 100 or 200yo, I really cant comprehend how he could be attracted to a 17 yo. Literally. The more I age the more I find that teenagers arent yet properly developed (identity) and still figuring life out. There's a side of them that still needs to mature which is perfectly normal. How as a fully grown man he can pursue a teenager. If I remember well, he already studied in universities during his previous lives and is stuck to high school in this era because he looks like a teenager. So that means he met and discussed plenty with adults and probably women from different places. I know Bella was special which is why he felt good around her since he couldnt hear her thoughts, and she sparked his interest. But it just feels off to me.

I know it's fiction but that literally makes no sense.

Yeah, that's sort of how I remember it being explained in the books, or maybe it was me reading between the lines? I think it was explained as your body stopping. Did they say brain development and emotional maturity too? (Edit: yeah, this was the stuff with the immortal children who could not develop past being whatever age they were mentally)

Which makes me think...Edward's original plan was to be with Bella until she grew old. I'm picturing now middle aged Bella pissed off by teenage Edward's bull crap.

I read the books as an adult when they first came out.

She's justifiably angry. She wasn't living with her dad before. She was living with her mother in a different state and got shipped north because her mother remarried a baseball player and the mom wanted to travel around.

So all the book series nonsense goes back to that.

Folks could argue all day that she chose to move to Forks.

But her mother chose her boyfriend and new husband over her own daughter. Picking the more stable parent isn't a choice, it's a self-defense mechanism and she can still be upset about it even if she chose it.

If I'm not mistaken I remember Bella actively suggested and chose to move to Forks because she wanted to give her mom and opportunity to be happy. Her mother didn't want her to and tries to get her to come back.

I never got the impression that Renee chose the boyfriend over Bella, more she was sort of flighty but mostly a pretty stable parent for her.

It always seemed to me that Bella's whole deal was that she was self sacrificial to the point of being a danger to herself and always put others needs above her own. This plot point felt like it was meant to be more about setting Bella up as this kind hearted martyr than an indictment on Renee's parenting. I don't remember any time where Renee was set up to be a bad parent in the series, just a bit of a head in the clouds type.

I appreciate this pov. What I meant by always angry is not about her living with her dad but rather she gets angry at edward, at her friends, at the rain, show basically at everything. Yes it might be because of her struggle to adapt and it comes out as irritability over small stuff. She's literally depressed. Except Edward nothing is interesting or fun to her. The whole time her thoughts are focused on him and what he might or not do/say.

She was grieving the life she had to leave behind to move to Forks. Very common to have lots of misplaced /displaced anger while grieving.

Not to mention many teenaged girls going through puberty get angry and the dumbest stuff, even those without all that much trauma in their lives. No judgement, I say this as a former angsty teen girl that used to be angry at the world, haha!

Also, I’m an adult now, but moved to the same general region (PNW) that Bella did about a decade ago. While I’ve gotten more used to it over time, the drizzly rain absolutely totally sucks sometimes, and my grumbly (inner) teen angst still comes out occasionally when it gets particularly bad lmao. I was in my mid-late teens living in sunshiny California when the books first came out, and had no idea I would one day move to the very area I was reading about at the time. Funny how life works out sometimes!

So my interpretation (I have not read Midnight Sun) is that Edward is a telepath who is obsessed with Bella because she is the first person whose thoughts he can’t read.

59 upvotes on reddit
Kriegnaut · 20 days ago

It’s more like he’s stuck in a timeloop than maturing, if you read Midnight Sun it’s clearly obvious that Edward is just a moody teenager, same as Bella. He complains about the other kids being vapid in a typical early 2000s “ugh, those preps.” None of his previous experiences have made him more mature than Bella.

According to Stephenie, he stopped aging when he was turned. He’s not 100+ years old, he’s 17, with the mental capacity of a 17yo

People get so weird about the age gaps. If we’re suspending disbelief enough to consider that vampires exist, I can get over one character technically being centuries older than another. Some of y’all need to stick to contemporary fiction if this bothers you so much.

I said this in another thread but Edward is literally a virgin who lives with his parents and goes to high school. Nothing at all about how he is written is meant to emulate an older man courting a teenager, he's written as an immortal teenager. This is by far the most ridiculous critique of Twilight and somehow is the most popular, it drives me nuts. People would rather clutch their pearls about a fantastical age gap that has zero bearing on reality than critique the series for it's ACTUAL flaws, like all the mormon stuff, the racism against the real life Native American tribe Meyer used as props without consultation or permission, and Edwards generally condescending and controlling behavior.

48 upvotes on reddit
BigCourse · 20 days ago

I always cringe at the 100+ ageless male hero courting some 17 year old. ACOTAR has this too. At 100 years old what could you possibly have in common. At 33 what in common do I even have with a 17 year old. It’s so WEIRD and like grooming vibes.

I love twilight as a middle schooler and it got me into fantasy romance but this trope should be dropped.

I liked the explication in Ann Rice. The vampires live forever, so after a while they get disconnected from current times. Some choose to kill themselves or hibernate, others turn young people to have up-to-date companions and "get on with the times".

The difference is, she showed it as predatory, not as something romantic.

17 upvotes on reddit
Effective-Anybody395 · 20 days ago

Regarding the age gap, vampire development is frozen at the age they’re turned. Not just physical, but emotional and mental development. Edward can learn, but he can’t mature. That’s the whole reason why it’s forbidden to turn a young child, because they’ll be incapable of developing logical reasoning and are purely impulse-driven (thus likely to expose themselves to humans). It’s actually a major plot point regarding Renesmee and why the Volturi want to kill her.

I still enjoy reading them decades later.

Bella and Edward

(This post is only talking about the first movie)

I know this is a very repetitive topic but as a twilight fanatic, and as much as a i love the saga, i feel like the romance wasn’t portrayed well at all. i just don’t understand how within the one hour mark they were so in love with each other and by the end of the movie Bella was ready to die for him (or essentially become a vampire). We barely even see any scenes of them together before bella admits to falling in love except the time he saves her from the weirdos (and the dinner after) and the garden scene after bella finds out about him. Maybe it’s explained better in the books (never read them) but in the movies it was just never shown nicely in the first movie.

The book isn't a lot better, but there are interactions that were probably cut to make room for the thriller aspects, to give the movie broader appeal. I don't know how well it worked; we'll never know what would have happened if the movie was more romance-focused with less action, but I think that was their logic anyway.

It always seemed like the movies, while able to be enjoyed by everyone, were really only made for the readers on the books. There's too much left out of the movies to make this a viable love story. It's still sweet or whatever, but without the books you get thoughts like OP. Which isn't bad, I'm not trying to say you're wrong for not reading the books, or that you can't enjoy the movies without the books, but there is just so much missing context.

I’ve had this same thought! I was an avid movie watcher before I read the books recently, and I always thought that in the movie they never even had the opportunity to fall in love before they were promising eternal love to each other. It felt like more of an infatuation in the movie, but in the book there’s definitely more build up to it, more substance to their scenes together where they share extensive dialogue and reveal fundamental aspects who they are. They actually give each other something to fall for.

I am truly not much of a reader, but seriously these books I couldn’t put down. They give such great context and are just different enough from the movies to make it feel like a comfortable, familiar experience with exciting new twists and details. Highly recommend.

What did Bella and Edward did on their dates?

Posted by europeanPoi · in r/twilight · 1 year ago

In the beginning of New Moon book it's quickly glossed over how Edward was taking Bella on all kinds of fancy dates during the summer. How do you think those dates looked like?

Because for some reason I can only imagine him taking her to get something to eat at a 5 star restaurant, which I don't think is very in tune with what Bella actually likes.

The older I get the more I'm convinced that Bella only likes Edward because of his vampire allure and Edward likes her because he can't read her thoughts so he can project whatever he wants onto her.

Honestly, it's really hard to find a genuine connection between the two.

Ughh, I really wish we got more fluff between them.

I agree, i wish we saw more fluff between them. I dont think Edward is all that interesting to be around, and i think it totally would have been cute to see scenes of Bella maybe annoying him and asking “So what were the 70s REALLY like? Did you have to pretend to be high if you were smoking with other people?”

I think Bella did mention they went to amusement parks and a couple carnivals/festivals? I havent read new moon in years so I may not be accurate.

— I feel like I could imagine them like doing pottery classes together,

— him taking her to old fashioned diners and them taking ironic pictures of sharing a milkshake.

— alternatively, they go to a fancy steakhouse and Bella fills up on salad and can barely eat the steak. Edward orders his steak “Very rare.” Bella makes a joke “Yeah, he likes it still mooing.”

— going to fancy stores and Bella has a classic dressing room sequence where edward gives dramatic facial expression reactions to all the outfits

— I can imagine them going to silent movies and Edward talking to her saying, “I remember I met Charlie Chaplin once, he’s a surprisingly quiet guy.”

— Going to a drive-in movie and Edward over-prepares the truck bed to keep her warm and comfortable.

— If timeline permitted, they probably would have done the planking trend

— probably would have gone to antique stores and Bella makes Edward try to find something older than him. He struggles to find anything that old but points to everything saying “I had one of these!” and proceeds to complain about how things were made so much better back then and how carpentry has lost its art. Edward of course purchases an antique necklace with some significance in the jewel and makes some speech

— fruit picking, if anything would be in season in their area. I imagine he would get really high in the trees to get the really healthy juicy fruits for Bella.

I love thinking of this stuff LOL

Oh I LOVE this and I’ve decided it’s all canon now, thank u

I ALSO really wish we got more fluff between them, more time to understand why they’d die for this relationship. I like many things about their dynamic- but a relationship without levity is hardly a relationship at all. they had their moments, but it would have added to the story a LOT if there were more of them. Edward pretending to be high might be my favourite thought in the world?

I think Bella would quiz him endlessly about the 1900s. She loves old things, she’d want to practically absorb his experiences. The antique store is so perfect, I can picture it exactly. Maybe Edward finds little human memories that tug at the edges of his mind when he sees things from the era of his childhood. Bella tries to draw them out of him, help him fill in the gaps. She dresses him up in old timey clothes- maybe they both pretend they’re on a date in the 40’s or something some times. I think they’d love museums together, and libraries, and national parks.

After they agree she’ll be turned, I like to think they plant a sapling sequoia or something. That they’ll get to watch grow together

Bella also LOVES running with Edward, so I think amusement parks make sense. I also like to think they “play wrestle”. Like, if I had a bf capable of fully picking me up, yeeting me across the room, then catching me softly and safely on the other side? It’d practically become a kink. Edward also seems like enjoys…. Human tourism??? So I think he’d love doing “classic human things”. Can totally see him insisting on one of those giant fairy floss sticks at the carnival even if bella is indifferent, and I absolutely see him trying to eat a bunch of it anyway.

Can totally see Edward insisting on the zoo, too. Bella teases him and is like “so what tastes better, do you think? Lion or gorilla?” And he’s like “shhh…shhhh… do you see how the mother chimp tenderly holds her young..,,.. the way they eat their fruit..,,. Swing in the tire swing….. effervescent”

Also, Edward suddenly gets in his head about Bella maximising her human experience, and the things she won’t get as a vampire. Suddenly, it’s very important to him Bella gets to try A grade wagyu, sea urchin, things with gold in it. Bella’s like “Edward seriously lots of humans never have this and it’s fine” and he’s like “I just don’t want you missing out on anything!!!”

Since Bella tried cliff diving, they find somewhere not on the reservation, and Edward jumps while holding Bella, really leaping and throwing himself up and out into the ocean, way more height than Bella could achieve on her own. they go to a human baseball game and Edward concedes that, ok, maybe some things are better as vampires. edward insists they take a cooking class- not because Bella can’t cook, but because he wants to cook for her. For once, he’s bad at something, and they both find joy in that.

I could do this forever lmao

Omg ok i love that you’re just as obsessed as me. I agree, i also just wanted to know why they’d die for each other.

You’re totally right about Bella trying to pull information out of Edward’s history to absorb it.

Do you ever think about them having lazy days and her randomly getting into watching and reading vampire romances? Like I’m also obsessed with the Vampire Diaries (show) and i just feel like Edward would sit with Bella while she watches, but he would be like rolling his eyes at all the sun-burning and the witchcraft stuff LOL. He’d say shit like “So vampires do have blood in this universe?” and “So vampires and werewolves don’t just want to throw up at the scent of each other?” and “Wow, Werewolves are extremely effective in this universe!” And Bella would surprisingly be a Damon girl and Edward would be like “But he’s a murderer” and Bella would be like “Dude Stefan is so boring, not to mention he is literally called THE RIPPER and is awed at by the evil originals!” And Edward would be like “My love, you can’t hate Stefan. I am the BLUEPRINT of brooding miserable vampire!” Bella: “That’s different, Edward!”

March 12, 2005. Exactly 20 years ago, Edward took Bella to the meadow and they kissed for the first time

(Catherine Hardwicke, I hate you for taking this away from us!!!)

Saturday, March 12, 2005.

Edward arrived at Bella's house at his usual time. Their clothes matched.

Bella drove north, at an agonizingly slow pace for Edward. At the end of the road, a trail (which they didn't follow) and a few hours' walk towards the meadow.

Bella saw Edward's gleam in the sun for the first time, as well as his strength and speed.

Returning to the car after a run, Bella and Edward kissed.

On the way back, Edward revealed his age and a little of his history.

It was the first night Edward and Bella had spent together (with Bella knowing).

It was the day everything changed.

And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…" he murmured. I looked away, hiding my eyes as I thrilled to the word. "What a stupid lamb," I sighed. "What a sick, masochistic lion.

Okay so I'm not even a twilight fan but remember how adventurous it felt to kiss someone new for the first time when you were 16/17? Magical.

This is one of the best images of the meadow scene that I've been able to find online. I tried scouring the Internet a week or so ago to find a quality image on Google, but was unable to locate one.

I planned on using the Bella/Edward meadow scene as an art reference for Maddie/Wally, a ship from the TV show School Spirits that is similar to Edward/Bella from Twilight, but Wally is a ghost instead of a vampire. (Wally is also Emmett-esque.) One of the clue boxes for Season 2 of School Spirits had lavender as an essential oil or scent for Maddie and Wally, and lavender is grown in fields in Sequim, a 90-minute drive from Forks through Port Angeles.

How I wish they had kept her finding out he's a vampire and the meadow scene book accurate. The way she found out in the movie was SO dramatized and I feel like we were robbed of the cutesy way she actually figured it out. The meadow scene would have been so funny on film if Edward suddenly jumped up and bolted and then ripped out a sapling lmao

March 13, 2005. Exactly 20 years ago, Bella visited the Cullen house, played baseball with them and began to be hunted by James.

Okay, a lot happened that day and YES, in the book it all happened on the same day.

Bella woke up thinking she had dreamed about the meadow and the night with Edward. When she realized the truth, there he was, sitting in the chair and watching her sleep.

She said in her sleep that she loved him and repeated it awake for the first time.

Edward took her to the Cullen house for the first time. She met everyone (except Emmett and Rose), as well as Carlisle's story. It was also the first time Edward played the piano for Bella.

Alice predicted a perfect storm for baseball. Edward took Bella home, where she was confronted by Billy, who realized she knew Cullen's secret.

Edward officially met Charlie, picked Bella up and they went to the field. He also said for the first time that he loved her.

James, Victoria and Laurent arrived and everything changed. The hunt began, Bella tricked Charlie and Alice and Jasper took Bella to Phoenix.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer review

Posted by Live-Needleworker-60 · in r/fantasyromance · 2 months ago

spoilers

Ah, it has been years since I’ve last read the Twilight series, and I thought it would be a trip to reread them and my god, I never realized precisely how creepy they are. As a 30-year-old woman, I cannot understand what is so appealing about Edward and Bella as a couple for the life of me. Like, individually, they are incredibly dull people, and together they are a super toxic couple. Every side character has a more interesting backstory than Bella and Edward. I’d instead read origin stories on every Cullen except Edward, and I’d be much more interested.

The first half of this book reads like someone just trying to fill up as much space as possible. It gets repetitive and dull and the plot doesn’t seem to exist until the last 100 pages. Also, the whole mystery of the book is spoiled in the blurb. You go into the book already knowing that Edward is a vampire, so there is no longer any surprise to it. And he’s not even a vampire that is cool in any way. I read that SM didn’t know anything about vampires before writing this and that she can’t read about other vampires because it upsets her if they’re too close or too far away from her vampires. (Wtf?) She also doesn’t watch horror movies because they are gross. I hate to break it to you, Stephenie, but so is Edward and Bella’s relationship.

Bella is a pick-me, lmao. I had never noticed it before. She worried that her plain black jacket was going to stand out. In what universe would it be weird to wear a plain black jacket? She has no hobbies that are expounded upon. Like there was potential to make her interested in cooking because she cooks all the time, it also seems like it was added so she could be some housewife. Charlie’s been living alone for about 15 years and is incapable of cooking. In the entire two chapters of Edward interrogating Bella, we don’t get to hear any of the answers save that her favorite color is….brown. BROWN BELLA?

Once she meets Edward, he becomes the center of her universe, like…ugh girl, please. I get that they’re teenagers, but they fall in love so fast that I’m embarrassed. She acts like the world is ending if he doesn’t give her the slightest bit of attention. Like girl, he almost barfed on you when ya’ll first met, and you’re like, yes, let’s date. Also, did anyone else notice how every man likes Bella, but all the women hate her? The waitress thinks she’s plain(how do you know that, Bella), Rosalie hates her, Lauren hates her, Jessica secretly hates her…., but every man wants to date her. Carlisle and Emmett love her, and Jasper tells her she’s worth all this drama. Lmao

Edward is so toxic. He stalks Bella constantly, and she’s flattered by it. He watches her sleep and always tells her to calm down when she doesn’t like something; he follows her to Port Angeles and tells her how he wants to murder those guys that were scaring her. He drives recklessly, aware that Bella is afraid, and barely slows down to make her feel better. He tells her it’s ‘partially her fault’ that James wants to hunt and kill her because she smells too good. He tricks her into going to prom and acts like she’s being ridiculous for crying because she didn’t want to go in the first place. Also, like Alice, what were you thinking about putting her in a high heel when one of her legs is BROKEN?

Bella is like the perfect little victim for Edward when you think about it. She has no friends in Phoenix at all, and she doesn’t know anyone well enough to consider anyone a best friend in Forks, so he pounces on her, and trauma dumps all his secrets on her knowing she has no one to tell. Also, if she does tell anyone, he’ll know right away because he can read their minds and then she’ll be afraid of what he would say to them/her for telling.

I notice that they saw Jasper and Rosalie are twins at one point, but they aren't twins, so? Did she intend for them to be twins but then changed her mind and made Jasper a racist instead? I also wonder if Stephenie Meyer knows someone in real life named Lauren she really hates because she has two bad guys named Lauren and Laurent in the same book.

Also genuinely curious about what happened to that bite of pizza Edward took. If they CAN eat, why don't they? Did that pizza sit in his stomach for the rest of his life? Can vampires poop? I'm so curious. I need to know.

I desperately want to know the age gap between Phil and Renee. What does Bella consider to be "too young"? But then she ends up dating a man 100 years older than her. Like hypocrite much?

I want to say that the whole scene with the waitress infuriated me. No waitress is going to behave like that, man. They want to get a good tip, and ignoring a customer just because you think a dude at your table is hot is not the way.

Also, the outfits send me into outer space. The khaki skirt and blue blouse that Edward calls utterly indecent? Goodbye. The white collared sleeveless button-down? Deceased.

I think part of the appeal of Twilight was that it popularized quasi-dark romances in YA; I'm unsure how deliberate Meyer was about that. Bella and Edward's relationship has a fair amount of the hallmarks of a dark romance: Massive power imbalance, mutual obsession between the two, Edward's dangerousness, him being a "monster" (he is a vampire), an outsider of societal/human norms and laws (somewhat), Edward's abuse of Bella, ect ect. It wasn't well-written, but it was probably new at time for YA?

IDK, it's early and I'm rambling.

I has been analyzed that way over the years, but 100% wasn't intentional. Meyer was (is?) a vanilla Mormon housewife, and Edward is based on a dream she had about the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith. The series is rife with Mormon symbolism, to the point of almost being propaganda. From the harmless nods to family dynamics, to the more problematic Rosalie's ideas on being childless, to the toxic relationship with Edward, to the racist undertones about Native Americans. Meyer's beta editor was her church leader.

I remember during its heyday, lots of criticism about the toxic relationship and the dangers of pushing those ideas onto young girls and presenting it as love.Twilight is like a dark romance with all the fun bits removed, scrubbed and sanitized into the most PG vanilla version possible, but still keeping all the toxic ugly bits.

Oh yeah, you're almost certainly right about it being unintentional, at least regarding whether Meyer intended to import dark romance into YA. Part of me wonders whether she was copying what was then-considered paranormal romances/urban fantasy? Though I might not be giving her enough "credit."

The Mormonism in Twilight wasn't overt to me until I read about peoples' dissections regarding it. I now see how she and Sanderson infused it into their writings to varying degrees; I wonder if it's a Mormon thing, or they're just the biggest Mormon genre fiction writers and it's their style.

Love the review. I read Twilight as a teenager and loved it, then heard how problematic it was and read it again and saw all the red flags. I can’t imagine reading it now for the first time.

If you want another trip, read Midnight Sun. It’s the same book from Edward’s perspective. I read it when it came out and it’s… what you’d expect.

I think I remember there being a part where he said something would be in his stomach forever but it might’ve been her tear he licked? Maybe he barfed the pizza? I don’t remember and this feels crazy to write but I also think that’s what’s in the book.

My Problem with Bella and Edward's relationship (Rewatch)

Posted by Safe-Return1004 · in r/twilight · 4 years ago

When I was younger I never really liked Edward and Bella as a couple and I just couldn't figure out why. But recently after re-watching the first movie it suddenly clicked for me.

Some of the common reasons for disliking Edward and Bella's relationship is that it's creepy, predatory, and overall kind of uncomfortable. And while I agree with these reasons there was one I feel like people don't talk about a lot.

My reason for disliking Bella and Edward's relationship stems from the fact that I never felt like they got to know each other. You know we never saw them talk about their likes and dislikes, talk about what they had in common or they disagreed on. It just felt like one day they were in love. I never read the books and this is purely from a movie standpoint but when I look at the timeline of the first movie Bella's obsession with Edward (and his with her) makes no sense to me.

  1. when they first meet he seems like he has a problem with her
  2. He saves her life, then she felt compelled to find out how he did it
  3. Then with no real reason at all, he constantly tells her to stay away from him while also being in her presence
  4. He saves her life again from those creepy guys
  5. Then he takes her to the woods and reveals what he is, then suddenly she's in love with him

Like where was the banter, where was the chemistry? I'm very confused. Let me make this clear I am by no means a Jacob and Bella shipper either. I found Jacob to be gross and unclear on the concept of consent.

The movie does not do the book any justice. You don't get to capture Bella's true essence. She is so witty and clever. She very observant and doesn't miss a thing. Edward is just fascinated with the fact that she doesn't act like the rest of the high school girls and of course he obsesses because he can't hear her. The movie ,in my opinion, does not do enough to capture that. Then in midnite sun we get to know bella from Edward's POV. He asks her all about herself, her childhood, favorite books, pets, favorite food....its just so interesting because in twilight she doesn't see herself as fascinating as she is to him. In conclusion you are missing out by not reading the books.

Definitely read the books. There was a 6 week period between the car crash and when Edward and Bella speak again. Just one example. I’m rereading twilight again currently (for the first time since I was 15/16...I’m 28 now) and I’m surprised at how much detail I had forgotten and that the movie left out.

Everything moves crazy fast, but in the books Edward spends a few days of non stop questioning to discover everything about her. Midnight Sun shows us that while Bella thought he was ignoring her, he was actually watching her interactions with others & falling in love with how kind and thoughtful she was. On Bella's part, yeah, she basically declared her love within days of him talking to her after he "ignored" her for weeks, but Edward had gotten to know her through the eyes of other people. In general, there is a lot more conversation in the books, especially Midnight Sun

Does anyone feel like Edward had an arc during Eclipse which really made him the best choice for Bella?

Posted by mikadomikaela · in r/twilight · 2 years ago

During Eclipse, I feel like Edward changed a lot. In the beginning he was against Bella being around Jake (for a decent reason ngl) and heavily regulated where Bella went. This is usually why most people see Edward as toxic. But I think what happened after that just made him into the vest choice overall.

He starts to see that Bella cares a whole lot about Jacob and becomes understanding of their relationship. He even feels like he had not right to have a say in it because he's the reason their friendship even developed. Later on, he actuallly is willing to give Bella up so she could be happy and not hurt himself. The last part is a slight red flag but I feel like it was necessary since he stated he didn't wanna live without her before and Jacob threatened to stop living because of their engagement.

Just seeing Edward willing to do all that for Bella makes it so obvious that he's better for her. In the span of a year, Jacob managed to switch up on Bella so many times. And when Bella tells Jacob what Edward said all he has to say is "Well he's obviously manipulating you Bella" like he didn't force her to kiss him through manipulation not long before.

I get why Jacob would make a decent candidate for Bella but he does himself dirty with his own actions. Especially when they can be compared to Edward's arc.

But that's just my opinion

I love this so much! Obviously Edward made a lot of mistakes, but people are too quick to point that out without acknowledging that he always learns a lesson from them. It’s character development. We wouldn’t even have a story to read without the characters sometimes making bad choices.

Stephenie sets up the distinction between Edward and Jacob really clearly, too. You see the pattern all throughout eclipse: when Edward does something wrong, Bella forgives him, then he tries to do better; when Jacob does something wrong, Bella forgives him, then he actively gets worse (there’s even a line at the end of the book where he basically says, “I’m not sorry, and I would do it again if I could”)

Bella makes a lot of mistakes and is really cruel in eclipse sometimes, too. She leads Jacob on, and she makes Edward constantly second guess if she wants to be with him or not. I understand why both guys go a little crazy lol.

22 upvotes on reddit
mikadomikaela · OP · 2 years ago

Yeah. That line annoyed me too. He saw how manipulative he was being and basically just said "Lol". I agree that Meyer made that distiction which is why I believe Jacob did a lot worse than Edward.

Bella makes a lot of mistakes and it did have me grinding my teeth at times. But Edward broke my heart in New Moon and Jacob had me ranting to my brother.

It all made the book a lot more fun to read

3 upvotes on reddit
samagr · 2 years ago

Just because Jacob did some shitty things doesn't mean he's wrong about Edward's shitty things. I feel like Edward was obviously portrayed to be the better choice, and Bella clearly loved him more.

But if I were in her shoes, Edward would be way too manipulative for me. The New Moon abandonment was deplorable. (Not to mention Breaking Dawn and him trying to decide soo many things for her and emotionally abandoning her.) I'd never be able to trust him again. It was so cowardly too. He couldn't be clear and honest with his feelings so he chose the alternative. I hate it when people think they know what's best for me and when people act (passive) aggressively when I don't take their advice.

For the same reason, I could never be with Jacob. He hated Edward for Bella up until Renesmee happened- which is so uncomfy and territorial. I totally get his dislike of Edward - obviously as a friend you don't want to see your friend get hurt physically and emotionally over and over again. But Jacob handled it poorly and in a - I know what's best for you - kind of way.

Tldr I don't think either of them had a convincing enough arc for me to be able to forgive their wrongdoings. It would probably have left me deeply impacted and possibly traumatized. I'm actually surprised Bella didn't have abandonment or attachment issues after NM. It would've made for a realistic conflict and really shown the two overcoming an internal relationship conflict rather than only external ones. Their relationship issues were skimmed over and forgiven too quickly to be believable imo.

Ultimately, Bella was never in love with Jacob so she made the right choice because it would be kind of selfish to be with someone just because the person you actually like isn't available. I think that's justification enough to pick Edward because at the very least -however toxic and unhealthy it was -their feelings were mutual and consensual.

15 upvotes on reddit
mikadomikaela · OP · 2 years ago

Honestly, I let Bella easily forgiving Edward slide for two reasons.

  1. She was afraid of the Volturi and later on Victoria too. It seemed more like "That was shitty but we have bigger fish to fry right now"

  2. I think a character being held accountable by another for their actions is great but its just so much better when the character holds themself accoumuntable. Edward did that and I think it was way better for the story.

I can't lie, I don't think Jacob had an arc. At least not to do with Bella and Edward

As for Breaking Dawn, his response to the situation was honestly the most human one ever. He protected her for so long and it seemed like it was all for nothing. At least he warms up to the idea of the child though.

I think all three of them did shitty things. Edward left Bella and broke her. Jacob was manipulative towards Bella. And Bella used Jacob to get over Edward and in the end she still didn't even really want him that much.

19 upvotes on reddit
samagr · 2 years ago

I agree with your reasoning for #2. I didn't mean in my original comment that Jacob was right to hold Edward accountable. I don't think he even did that. I just meant that Jacob wasn't incorrect in his discernment that Edward did shitty things. (And vice versa)

But I don't think Edward had an accountability arc. He definitely felt guilty and realized he messed up, but he never had to deal with the consequences of that wrt his relationship with Bella.

He did experience the risk of losing her to Jacob in Eclipse - but it never impacted his actual relationship with Bella. Her trust in him, her ability to rely on him, her devotion to him was all pretty stable. None of that was ever at risk. Her fling with Jacob was more to mollify Jacob rather than doubting the quality of her relationship with Edward. And more to do with her potential future with Jacob as a human. I hope this makes sense!

And #1... I can see how that might delay her dealing with forgiving Edward, but it doesn't get delayed just fully forgiven and forgotten. 🤷‍♀️ I'd still have trust issues with Edward either way.

I think it might be a me thing - it's fair for people to have different standards with what they need to feel secure within a relationship. For me personally, with the way things played out in the books, I'd probably have more issues than Bella did. And not to say that Bella isn't entitled to forgive him however and whenever she wants, but I'm surprised she got over it so quickly given the way she was impacted in New Moon.

To a barely 16 year old boy with a supernatural curse that heightens all of his emotions ‘not just the pretty ones’. I can understand Edward being peoples favorite but to act like they aren’t almost equal in their toxicity is wild.

My stance on Jacob will never change. After Leah turned he complained about the triangle, hearing all the thoughts around the sam Leah split. Jacob wanted to do the same with Bella. He’s in love with her and wants to be with her, KNOWING at some point he will imprint on SOMEONE else.

Edward was always the clear choice.

Why did Bella choose Edward over Jacob in Twilight

What are the differences between Edward and Jacob in Twilight

What is the significance of Bella's choice in Twilight

AI Answer

🤖

How did Bella and Edward's relationship develop in Twilight

Key Considerations in Bella and Edward's Relationship Development in Twilight:

  1. Initial Attraction: Bella Swan moves to Forks, Washington, where she meets Edward Cullen. Their initial interactions are marked by a strong, almost magnetic attraction, despite Edward's mysterious demeanor.

  2. Mystery and Intrigue: Edward's supernatural abilities and his family's secretive nature create an air of mystery that draws Bella in. She becomes increasingly curious about him, leading to deeper interactions.

  3. Conflict of Nature: The relationship develops amidst the tension between Bella's human nature and Edward's vampire instincts. Edward struggles with his desire to protect Bella while also wanting to be close to her, which adds complexity to their bond.

  4. Emotional Connection: As they spend more time together, their emotional connection deepens. They share personal stories and experiences, allowing them to understand each other on a more profound level.
