TL;DR Lightning McQueen transitions from being a dominant racer to a mentor, embracing the next generation of racers and finding fulfillment beyond racing.
Technological Advancements and Competition
In "Cars 3," Lightning McQueen faces challenges from newer, technologically advanced cars like Jackson Storm. These new-generation racers are faster and more efficient, which highlights McQueen's struggle to keep up with them [2:1]
[2:2]. The film portrays how advancements in technology can impact athletes, pushing older generations out of their prime and forcing them to adapt or retire.
Psychological and Emotional Growth
McQueen undergoes significant psychological and emotional growth throughout the movie. Initially, he struggles with his identity as he realizes he's no longer the fastest car on the track. His journey involves accepting that he may not win every race but can still find joy and purpose in other aspects of life, such as mentoring Cruz Ramirez [3:1]. This shift in focus helps him rediscover his passion for racing by investing in others' success.
Mentorship and Legacy
A pivotal moment in Cars 3 is when McQueen decides to let Cruz Ramirez finish the race for him. This decision marks a turning point where McQueen acknowledges the importance of passing on his legacy and supporting the next generation [5:1]. By doing so, he mirrors the mentorship he received from Doc Hudson, completing his character arc and emphasizing the theme of paying it forward
[5:5].
Embracing Change
Throughout the film, McQueen learns to embrace change rather than resist it. He initially dismisses Cruz’s modern training techniques but eventually recognizes the value in adapting to new methods [3]. This acceptance of change is crucial for his personal development and allows him to transition smoothly into a new role within the racing community.
Conclusion of Racing Career
The ending of Cars 3 wraps up McQueen's racing career while opening new possibilities for his future. By choosing to mentor Cruz, McQueen finds a way to stay connected to the sport he loves without being the primary competitor [5:5]. This conclusion provides a satisfying closure to his racing story while hinting at continued involvement in the racing world through coaching and mentorship.
Why did Storm enter the race (the race where we first meet him) only at the end, or at least if he was there the whole race - why didn’t anyone notice him, why didn’t he overtake everyone with his technical dominance over everyone else , what, how, where? Why was the New Generation allowed on the track together with the Old Generation? This is an imbalance, this is dishonest, this is a logical hole. Yes, any reasonable person (in our case, a car) seeing such a sport will immediately leave the stands, turn off the TV, throw oil cans at the Piston Cup, because this is stupidity, everyone will have the impression that all this was bought, and so on and so on according to the regulations.
He's saving the fuel / energy to overtake, the drag would slow you down if you're at the front row, also he's a cocky showman, he definitely would want that dramatic effect to gain attention
Cocky showman….where have a seen a car like that before? lol love the cars franchise! The first movie is truly a masterpiece. Having a kid made me revisit some movies, and Cars is one that I’m glad I’ve seen again lol
Definitely makes sense
Probably switched another racer out for him
Well, this is not the case. His sponsor IGNTR did not have a racing team before Storm. It probably that Storm was conserving fuel till the last lap as drafting and the drag during overtaking burns a lot of gas in racing, and only full throttled in the end. Plus, Storm is a cocky asshole and just wanted to show off and rub it into the old racers.
When I participated in my first outboard boat race, I was told I had to hang back because I was a rookie. During the first race my 9 year old brain realized ‘wait— 3/4 of the kids racing are rookies— we can’t all hang back’ so I decided to just kinda go at my own pace, I got second behind the older kid who was experienced. The next heat I decided to see if I had pace and actually hung with the experienced racer. Afterwards the stewards got mad at my saying I had to hang back, and I just said ‘why? I’ve got the pace and I didn’t put myself in a bad spot’. They couldn’t do anything to me because I didn’t technically do anything wrong cuz I didn’t pass the other kid.
I was beating them consistently by the halfway point in the season.
Maybe Jackson Storm as a rookie was told he had to be respectful to other racers but he realized these old men just don’t have his pace so at the end he decided ‘forget it’ and used the next gear to motor on by.
Why do rookies have to hang back tho? Those stewards in charge of your boat race did a really good job at killing racing.
Because they didn’t want inexerpeinced kids going out there thinking they could just go get in the middle of those fighting for the win— because the likelihood of only having a single veteran racer in a race is not that likely, although kids divisions probably have a lot of turn over.
|| Why was the New Generation allowed on the track together with the Old Generation?
Well, if we think about it more, lightning himself was jackson storm at one point. he came out of nowhere and started to kick everyone. Only difference between them is, mcqueen raised well, and turns out someone (or somecar) good-hearted.
Jackson Storm's generation was far more advanced than McQueen when compared to Lighting and the King.
he had that dog in him
I see it this way: The King was more experienced than the others and knew how to push himself to get that extra bit of speed, so he could outrace them. By the time Lightning was the "older" one in Cars 3, he was past his prime, and Jackson Storm and others were more technologically advanced than him so they could outdrive him (at first).
Well you also gotta remember that the king and McQueen when they were out of their prime raced in different eras.
Strip def a goat of his time but McQueen THE goat
I love the detail in this scene of the arrow being improperly tracked on Chick so it’s not even pointing at him
It’s the little things!
Because he's the GOAT
At the beginning of the film, McQueen directly acknowledged that he needed to do something different in order to recover from his slump. However, McQueen basically rejects everything she wants to do out of hand. Instead, he insists on training on the beach and (by his own admission) winds up wasting a bunch of time in the process. In fact, he seems to spend more time traveling around and looking for ways to train instead of actually training.
Setting aside the fact that it would have changed the development of his relationship with Ramirez, would he have been more successful at the big race if he had just followed her training plan?
No. He was obsolete now.
His problem was psychological and not physical. He's been winning non stop before Jackson storm showed up so he became complacent and stopped improving. He had the means to win all along but Jackson storm broke his spirit. It was just a matter of understanding that even if he retired there was still joy for him like coaching cruz ramirez.
Official race paint jobs must be pre approved. His new look wasnt.
Sponsors were removed, so they had to be put back.
Identity. People would probably not believe it was mcQueen if he didn't look like his old self.
Ty, close topic.
Perhaps the racing livery is a wrap or a big sticker. Sally calls him stickers all the time. Maybe it’s not just about the headlights.
Every graphic on McQueen aside from his base red paint job would likely be a sticker/decal
If we go by real world logic he's contractually obligated to have his sponsorship on him for the race... But I'm guessing given the time crunch maybe he is actually wearing a "wrap" (essentially one large sticker that covers the entire car body) rather than a repaint.
They have a scene of one of those in the third movie I think
Even nascars get wrapped, instead of painted, cause of how detailed all the graphics are
I'd presume that also helps with drag and weight.
I remember in the book “Faster than Fast” there’s a scene where Ramone introduces him before the final race to the crowd with this paintjob as “the new Lightning McQueen”. Movie novels often include deleted scenes or details from the script, I wonder if this was one of them?
So he was potentially going to race with this paint scheme in the final race? I prefer his classic Rusteze scheme, but that would have been kinda cool honestly.
It would be same as if the new paint was a nice suit and the whitewalls were dress shoes. He wouldn’t race in that outfit, he’d wear the racing gear which in this case would be the racing approved paint job
It's like how despite pop culture saying it is, James Bond does not dress in a tuxedo everywhere he goes, only in places you'd expect a tuxedo-wearer to be. This seems to be the automotive equivalent of a tuxedo.
I was just curious what everyone thought of the ending of Cars 3? Apparently a lot of people don't like it, and think that Lightning letting Cruz finish the race for him is a bad ending. I honestly couldn't disagree more.
To preface this, the original Cars was the first film I ever saw in a cinema. I'm not kidding, it was literally the first ever movie I saw in the cinemas back in 2006 and I love it with all my heart. In my opinion, the ending of Cars 3 was perfect. It took Lightning to his logical end point considering where he started, and it's very satisfying in my opinion. But what do you think?
Because people I've seen prefer this deleted ending more

Wonder what the standing of the race would’ve been like. 1st Lightning, 2nd Cruz, 3rd Jackson or a switch in 1 & 2. I actually liked how Tex is giving Lightning a way into the race. Kinda paying forward for what he did for The King in his last race in the first movie.
If I was writing it, it would be McQueen 1st and Cruz and storm tied
I think in my opinion is this 1st Lightning, 2nd Cruz, 3rd Jackson
That was so much better
Definitely agree, I didn't know there was an alternate ending to Cars 3, it just popped up in my recommendations and it was so cool. People say the alternate ending didn't feel like Lightning sacrificed himself and accepting it was the end of his career but i think with the alternate endin g lightning could've protected Cruz from jackson storm if he tried any dirty tricks and this would lead to lightning falling behind along with jackson storm, this would let Cruz win the race and Lightning gets his revenge on Jackson Storm
Damn that was actually really cool
Yeah
mcqueen shoud've finished the race whether he won it or not because he started it and he's the main character of the whole series. Then, he passes his legacy to cruz and becomes her mentor just like doc hudson was to mcqueen.
I think it’s the perfect way to wrap up the story. He still has more story ahead, but the story of his racing is what we were introduced to in the first one, saw glory years of in the second one, and saw wrapped up in the third one. I couldn’t ask for a better ending.
I love the ending of Cars 3. Lightning spends the whole movie training Cruz to replace him without noticing until they're at the race. Doc did it for him and he's paying it forward. It's great a nice bookend for the trilogy 🤌
Agreed. It's really bittersweet but also very satisfying.
He can get as many paint jobs as he wants but he needs his number to race and I am sure it’s in his contract that he needs to be wearing his sponsors when racing. He likes the other paint job better so he changed it back?
this absolutely. McQueen has to wear his number and sponsors when racing, and surely he had time after the race to visit Ramone's and get a slick new look (inspired by his cruisin paint job) before seeing Sally up at the Wheel Well
More toys to sell without new molds.
Ramons good at what he does
Like wearing a firesuit for a race
It’s an animated movie about talking cars. I don’t think logic and continuity really factor in to the script too much
I think Cars 3's ending would have been a lot better if you essentially switched around Lightning and Cruz's endings. Have Lightning be Dinoco's new racer and change his number to 51 while Cruz races for Rusteze and takes Lightning's 95.
Lightning would have accomplished his original goal from the first movie to race for Dinoco, but this time he takes it for his love of racing, not for fame and fortune, displaying his growth. I feel him taking Docs number himself feels a lot more appropriate then him giving it to Cruz. Cruz never met Doc, it holds more weight to see Lightning race with his mentors number. Not to mention Dinoco suits the Doc inspired look he takes on at the end of the movie, although it is a different blue to Dinoco blue.
Lightning giving Cruz his original number and sponsor is a way better way to pass the torch imo. His whole career has turned Rusteze into an iconic brand in racing, building it into something way bigger then when he originally got his big break with them. And now he gets to give that opportunity to a new racer. And just like how Lightning is taking on his mentors number, Cruz in using the 95 does the same.
I've long thought that they could've essentially done what you're saying as part of a "have your cake and eat it too" ending. If what you're saying happened, you could have still had Lightning give Cruz a pep talk on the track (both would have started at the back because neither qualified, giving them literally the whole race to work toward the front and have a moment to talk - and they could have a pep talk similar to the final film during a caution or something) and then Cruz pulls away and wins the race while Lightning is the one who ends up against the wall, does the flip over Storm, and comes in 2nd. Lightning didn't need to win this race anymore because he wouldn't be working for Sterling anymore so the deal would be off. I think just him finally getting one over on Storm while Cruz gets the spotlight too would have been extremely satisfying. Tex could still buy Rust-eze because he doesn't want to let another generation defining racer get away which would let Cruz stick with that team and Lightning would happily pass his number to Cruz and keep Doc's. Additionally, Smokey could say something to Lightning like "you showed you still have it today kid but I heard what you said to Cruz on the track. You've got a real future as a crew chief when you do decide it's time" and you could flash forward to more races with Cruz and Lightning and eventually show him as her crew chief, similar to how the movie originally ended. I didn't hate the ending we got I just feel like something like this could've been so much better.
I love the idea of Lightning flipping over Storm instead of Cruz. Lighting crashed at the start of the film because he let Storm get in his head. By overcoming it at the end of the movie it would have showed his growth.
I belive that was an original planned ending. But Rusteeze dropped McQueen so Tex took the chance to take him on and he went on to win the race, beating both Rusteeze and Storm
I agree especially that this was palanned to be the orignal ending but then was changed to what we got.... Yes I know the point of the 3rd movie is about to move on but come on that would've been a perfect ending
I would have liked that, but Lightning keeps the 95, and Cruz gets the 20.
I think the number belongs to the sponsor doesn't it? Although not sure how that would work seeing as cruz took the 51 from Doc
51 was also the number of Ruby Easy Oaks, so, no, it's the car that really choses it's number.
For me, just one thing was missing from the Cars 3 ending, that would have made it way better.
After the flip, McQueen says "Float like a cadillac!" and then Cruz answers "Sting like a beamer!", as she crosses the finish line.
Bam. Infinitely better.
Turns out Lando is much harder to pass when it's not turn 1
Thought he learned that in Austria 🤷♀️
Lore related reason/theory: All the cars lightning would’ve been competing against had tech that wouldn’t have been compatible with his “biology” if he tried to have it installed nor would he have been able to learn how to use it efficiently before he was deemed to be too old to qualify for any kind of racing.
Plot related reason/theory: it was to show Lightning’s journey from hot shot rookie to a reckless and kinda selfish version of doc. He didn’t train his replacement for any reason other than to save his reputation and beat his rival, despite the theme revolving around the power of “love and friendship and a strong mentor/student bond” they were trying to go for.
That’s not true at all. In the end he gives up his position in the big race so she can race - not so he can beat the rival by proxy and secure his reputation, but for her to forge her own.
Contrast this with Chick, who’s become a washed up news anchor constantly reminding everyone of the time he peaked and he can’t let go.
Not exactly the vibe I got from watching the movie, especially with the doc/lightning comparison crash scenes, but it’s also been a while since I watched it so maybe it’s worth having a more thorough look over to see if that’s still the case or not.
Tires = shoes. The engine would be the brain or heart not so easy to replace
Counterpoint, in Cars 2 the main villain’s inspirational story is about how he became an electric car after being trapped in the jungle, or something like that. He didn’t actually go electric, as is the big twist, but the fact he was able to use it as a widely advertised cover story means it’s certainly possible to change one’s engine.
Counterpoint in Planes they do maintenance on engines all the time. I don’t recall if they ever actually replaced an engine but there seemed to be no end to the amount of modification they could do
That’s Disney. Not Pixar. At a time they were still separate entities. I am not sure the canon connections since though.
Based on a cars 1 deleted scene, the engine is seemingly the brain.
Really!

It would be the car equivalent to extensive surgery just to keep racing more. He may simply not want to do that. Like, also a pride thing. Also kind of embarrassing. Like an aging celebrity getting work done tonkeep up with younger celebrities.
His body also might be able to handle it. These new raceways were entirely different models. They didn't just have more powerful engines. They had different frames, different bodies, etc. that all made them faster. I'm not a car expert, but I don't think swapping the engine in an old car is always enough to make it faster. Not by professional racecar standards, anyway.
Different style of racing, Grand Prix courses vs circle track, creative license, because it looks cool. Take your pick. Same reason he has a different style of wheel
Toy sales
Not this post being marked as "Spoiler" lmao
i love imagining op posting this going that seems specific but i guess
Nah, it automatically did that and idk why
Plastic surgery
Because in the film, he raced on true circuits and not those goofy ahh fake oval "racetracks" he usually races on, he needed more downforce for the proper corners on those true racetracks. Hence his ducktail was replaced by a GT style spoiler.
