TL;DR Doc Hudson passed away before the events of Cars 3, and his absence is attributed to Paul Newman's death. The film does not explicitly detail how Doc died, but concept art suggests he died in 2009.
Reason for Character's Absence
The primary reason Doc Hudson was absent from Cars 3 is due to the passing of Paul Newman, who voiced the character [1]. Pixar decided not to recast or use archived audio extensively, opting instead to honor Newman's legacy by retiring the character
[5:1].
Concept Art and Timeline
Concept art created for Cars 3 indicates that Doc Hudson died in 2009 [4]. This concept art included Lightning McQueen in his Cars 2 design, suggesting the scene might have been intended as a flashback
[4:1]
[5:5]. However, this scene did not make it into the final film, possibly due to concerns about its tone
[5:3].
Speculations on Cause of Death
While the films do not specify how Doc Hudson died, fans have speculated various scenarios. Some suggest that Doc's engine stalled during training with Lightning McQueen, analogous to heart failure [1:2]. Others propose that as an older race car, Doc may have succumbed to wear and tear, unable to handle the forces exerted on his components
[1:8]
[1:10].
Cultural References
Doc Hudson's coach in Cars 3, Smokey, is based on real-life stock car chief Henry "Smokey" Yunick, connecting Doc Hudson's character to historical racing figures [3]. This adds depth to Doc's backstory and emphasizes his significance within the racing world.
Fan Reactions
Fans have expressed mixed feelings about the handling of Doc Hudson's death. Some feel a more explicit explanation would have been beneficial, while others appreciate the subtle approach taken by the filmmakers [5:11]. Overall, Doc Hudson remains a beloved character whose legacy continues through Lightning McQueen's journey.
I know the reason they killed the character off was because Paul Newman died, but Doc himself was in pretty good shape, better shape than the cars his age that we see in Cars 3. Hell, Cars 2 is all about shitty, barely-functioning cars, and Doc was certainly not one of them. So, what happened? Did he turn far enough left that he found himself going right off a cliff?
I don’t remember where I read this, so might not be the definite answer. From what I read they said Doc’s engine stalled during training with lightning and they couldn’t fix him. Seems to be the equivalent of heart failure.
That happens with high power race cars. Sometimes they just stop being able to handle the forces they are going through. I assume oil in the pistons is equivalent the bends or something
Since we don't see a bunch of older cars driving around, we can presume that they do die at some point, probably from equipment failure. At that point, we come to Theseus's Paradox, or if you have to replace every part (or in this case certain parts) of Doc, is he still doc?
My guess in Cars is no. If you suffer a catastrophic engine failure or similar problem where massive, critical components need replaced you are effectively so different that you aren't you anymore. Legislatively, that means that certain repairs that we can do on Earth cannot be performed in Cars to prevent that scenario.
Doc suffered a massive engine failure, which probably required them to replace the entire engine to get him back up and running. The problem being that if they replaced his whole engine, he's not Doc anymore. So in cars, there is a certain level of repair that they will not perform. Doc needed one of those repairs and since it couldn't be performed, he died.

We've seen a few. Mater technically is one, as is the Model T (whose name I can't remember) in radiator springs.

It is also possible that it's one of those components that can't be ethically replaced either. Cars need their engines, and they don't have spares lying about.
If Doc's engine failed completely, rather than just one or two components, it may not be possible to swap them in.
Even without the ship of Theseus problem, Doc was already an old car, of special racing spec. They wouldn't have been able to replace his components, or fit an entire engine to him easily.
Her name's Lizzie.
Hmm, what if there were car engine donors?
That wouldn't have helped in this case, since Doc is a specialised vehicle, and a dated one. They would need to find a donor matching his year of manufacture, make, and model, which could very well be impossible.
It wasn't implied to be a violent accident.
Look, cars get old. Sometimes they get problems that can't be fixed with a change of oil and a new set of tires.
Especially since Doc was a race car, and that probably wore out his components a lot more than a normal car's, which may not go so well, considering he would have tighter tolerances.
Of course, he might have also just decided that it was time for him to go and left.
Good point. Race Cars are designed for performance, not longevity.
He spent a long time addicted to speed. He got clean well before the end, but it takes its toll.
Ya know, man. It's sad. But when an old car's head gasket goes and his piston rings are shot, it's usually just a matter of time.
It's better that way. No one wants to be seen driving down the street dribbling a stream of coolant behind him. A proud old coupe like Doc wouldn't have wanted to live like that.
I'm running Trivia Night tomorrow, and one of the questions is "Does This Doctor Have A Doctorate?"
I'm including Doc Hudson as one of the rounds
I'm assuming there is no higher education (much less doctoral degrees) in the Cars universe
But I figure I should double-check)
If I'm not wrong, it's confirmed in one of the older graphic novels that he took up "Internal Combustion" after his wreck, eventually earning his Doctorate.
Also, I'm 60%(?) sure you can also see his doctorate framed on his office wall when McQueen bursts in on Doc and Sheriff. I could totally be misremembering that detail, though.
according to extended media, he took up a medical career post-crash. It's illegal to impersonate a doctor so even though we don't physically see his doctorate degree we can assume because he advertises himself as a doctor on the front of his clinic in Cars 1, he had to have graduated with a doctorate degree in car medicine.
we also know that Doc fixed Sally when she broke down in Radiator Springs, as well as when he's fixing something with Sheriff in that one scene in Cars 1, he's definitely a doctor
I think Sheriff was getting the Cars equivalent of a colonoscopy lmao
According to the wiki he has a doctorate in internal combustion so yes and has doctor of internal combustion on his sign
Ooh excellent! Thank you!
I’m pretty sure he does. In the movie doesn’t he own his own check up place and we see him with Sheriff in there.
The 3 older racers in town are also based on NASCAR veterans:
This was also alluded to by the signage on the racetrack advertising the "best darn garage in town", smokey Yunicks garage was "the best damn garage in town"
wow, another good detail good sir
Smokey Yunick was also one of the biggest "cheaters" in nascar history, basically if it wasnt in the rulebook, hed do it.
Smokey Yunick was to NASCAR what Mr. Welch is to RPGs.
My favorite Smokey Yunick story is the time his car failed at inspection and he drove it back to the shop, without a gas tank. They had dropped it during the inspection, but he had installed a 2 inch diameter, 10 foot long fuel hose with that held an extra gallon of fuel.
Since there was going to be a flashback scene about how Doc Hudson died for Cars 3, concept art of Doc's grave was created for the film, which is found in the book, The Art of Cars 3.
This concept art confirms that Doc died in 2009. Additionally, the Cars 2 version of Lightning McQueen was included in this concept art, likely intended to be used in flashback scenes in the film.
I wonder why McQueen is in his Cars 2 style even tho he didn't get it until 2011 when the second movie happened.
Cause the scene would’ve taken place after cars 2?
Yeah that would be possible
"He had a lot of stuff" Is such a funny thing to put on a headstone without context.
He also HAD a lot of stuff. Bit of a hoarder. I always saw it as a bit of a joke the townies were making.
"You got a lot of stuff, kid."
I got a headcanon that this flashback scene was after the World Grand Prix since he still has his Cars 2 paint job. If it was more earlier, he’d had his radiator springs paint job
Interesting headcanon. That makes sense.
“Erm did you know they animated a deleted scene” No they didn’t
who's cutting onions?
I wonder…. Because it had the same effect on me…
The Doc Hudson corpse in Radiator Springs 500 1/2 was kinda disrespectful
That’s NOT Doc Hudson.
Not doc hudson
In an another youtube video from Ned Wheeler, it was going to be in Cars 2, and there was a deleted concept art from Pixar cast, where Doc's grave was placed. But after a thought, the producers thought that as "depressing", but I also think it'd be disrespectful.
But in Cars 3, well that'd be horrible.
Actually, the concept art of Doc Hudson's grave was created for Cars 3. Interestingly, the Cars 2 design of Lightning McQueen is in the concept art, most likely intended to be used in Cars 3.
Proof: https://www.pixar.com/cars-3
Doubt it. Often time concept art will use pervious designs that are not indicative of the final result
Cars 2 mcqueen was never considered for cars 3
Yeah, this is real. There's a real concept art of Lightning McQueen, in his Cars 2 design, visiting Doc Hudson's grave.
Sounds like bs, cause I’m pretty sure that they wouldn’t bring back doc except in flashbacks, but only use preexisting voice lines
And also horrible cuz man this would be very bad for children who watch that movie.
I don’t really think of Cars 3 as being directed towards children, it was definitely more for the people who started with the 1st one.
At least they should’ve revealed the circumstances, which have remained unknown for too long now.
Actually yes, it comes from a Jay Ward interview. https://comicbook.com/popculturenow/news/cars-3-the-role-of-paul-newmans-doc-hudson-explained/
Image source The Pixar sponsorship is because Newman was the voice actor for the character Doc Hudson in the movie Cars.
Oh thats so awesome, I wonder if I can find a die cast of this.
In first Cars movie, when the race between Lightning Mcqueen, King and Chick Hicks was about to be finished with Mcqueen's victory, Chick, after unsuccessful efort to overtake King, he pushed King off the track. And since King got such severe damages, that he easily might have died(even in the first movie, cars proved, that they're mortal, and especially good they proved it in the second movie)l, I wonder, why Chick Hicks wasn't jailed for this. Like it was an obvious intention to murder King. And for what? For just one cup? I don't know, how juridical system works in Cars world, but in real life, a racer, who would have pushed his rival off the track with an intention to kill him, would have been jailed for sure. So, do you have any theories?
I don't think chick "nearly killed" the king, cnsidering he was doing Post-Race interviews both 10 minutes after the wreck
Besides, weve seen cars survive much worse managlings in this franchise, some caused by chick himself.
Personally, I think the fact that the crash DIDN'T kill The King is the only reason Chick wasn't punished more severely. Well, that and it's a kids movie. But also- I doubt there was enough evidence to point to that. With the way Chick always caused his wrecks, it was always subtle enough that it could've just been an innocent "rubbin's Racin' sort of situation.
It's either plot armor or there's just not enough evidence that he intentionally sabotaged King. I think it's the first one though
Also, its nascar. Pushing and pit-manuvering is legal
Especially at the time the first movie was made. Now it is a little less legal depending on how and where on the track you do it. Also Chick Hicks was partly based off of Dale Earnhardt who was known to race rough and spin people for the win.
It's definitely that. Unless there's concrete evidence he did that with malicious intent, it's nothing more than a racing incident as far as the stewards are concerned. The funny thing is however, is that in a real racing environment, king would actually be found at fault for that wreck because in motorsports it's prohibited to multi-block. You can defend your position by reacting to a potential overtake attempt by changing your line, but you can't actively react to what your opponent is doing. So you can't swerve back and forth to prevent someone from passing, and that's exactly what king did.
Nascar does not have a blocking rule like that. You can block all you want, but what Hicks did is the norm if you are faster than the person who is blocking.
Strip Weathers didn't press charges
Maybe officials were bribed to not punish Chick.
By none other than htB bank. (His sponsor)
I also agree with that theory like Hostile Takeover Bank may have bribed Piston Cup officials. And that's why in Cars:The Videogame(which takes place 1 year after the events of the first Cars movie), Chick Hicks takes part in racing like nothing had ever happened.
I have kids and we've been watching this in countless times - many many times...
I'm 1001% sure that doc hudson says this: "Music to my ears" and not "Music, Sweet Music"
This line is around 46:40 in the movie.
Cars don't even have ears.
I'm gonna check on this one soon (maybe tomorrow: I just need to find back our dvd)
edit: in fact I watched it in french sorry (and I remember translating to myself the french phrase to "music to my ears"... :)
I was a huge fan of cars back when it first came out, I remember “music, sweet music.”
Now I want to watch Cars again
I wonder if cars, in the cars universe, could have an engine transplant
An early story concept treated that as a brain transplant.
But Cars 2 dialogue mentiones replacing an engine block as doable.
I mean it should be. It’s more of a bunch of muscles if you think about it. Brain would probably be something like the computer under the car seat, or the actual brain.
So much work went into a movie with very little plot.
It has the same plot as Rudy and sand something. All the sport movies about a little guy who magically becomes the best after a bunch of fails and a mentor.
There's two fucking dream sequences in Cars FFS. One is usually "we're out of ideas", two is "fuck, we really need to fill in time"
Originally supposed to release in 2010 it was unfortunately cancelled most likely because of Doc's voice actor Paul Newman passed away just a year earlier. He was planned as a Chase for that year and he was first featured in the 2010 collectors guide which came with a Metallic Dragon Lighting McQueen from Cars toons.
You got a lot of heart kid! That looks great.
How’d you make it?
I made it using a spare Dirt track Fabulous Hudson Hornet diecast and bent the tires out words with pliers and other tools, Since I didn't have a printer I just made the eyes myself. And painted the grill detailing since Mattel never bothered to do it and I used various mixes of browns and blacks matt paint to top it all off. (I didn't bother with the hood and trunk because I don't have a Dremel to cut the metal and I didn't wanna risk hurting myself) And yeah that's how I made it, I will be making more custom damaged cars in the future so stay tuned
Nice
Wow 🤩
Cool
Amazing
