What Redditors are Saying

Winston's Character Development in New Girl

Initial Character Setup

Winston's character was introduced under unique circumstances. Initially, the show had planned for Coach to be a central character, but when Damon Wayans Jr. left after the pilot, Winston was brought in as a replacement [3:6]. Early on, Winston was portrayed with traits similar to Coach, focusing on sports and competitiveness [1:2], [4:2]. However, this role did not quite fit Winston's personality or Lamorne Morris's comedic style [1:3].

Transition to Comedic Role

As the series progressed, particularly from Season 3 onwards, Winston's character evolved significantly. The writers began to explore his quirky and humorous side, allowing him to become more of a comedic relief character akin to Phoebe from Friends [4:1]. This transition aligned better with Morris's strengths and resulted in memorable moments like his antics with Ferguson the cat [2:2] and his "Pranks Sinatra" persona [3:6].

Character Development and Identity

Winston's development can also be seen as a journey of self-discovery. Initially struggling with his identity post-basketball career, he gradually embraced his eccentricities and found confidence in his uniqueness [4:4]. This transformation is mirrored by his increasingly bizarre yet endearing behavior, such as his love for bubbles and pranks [1:1], [1:9].

Impact of Cast Changes

The return of Coach allowed Winston to further develop into his own distinct character. With Coach back in the mix, Winston was freed from the need to fill the "sport bro" role, enabling him to embrace his comedic potential fully [1:3], [4:2]. This change was crucial in establishing Winston as a beloved character whose humor and warmth became integral to the show's dynamic.

Fan Appreciation

Fans have expressed their admiration for Winston's character, noting how his evolution from a less defined role to a lovable goofball made him one of the most cherished characters on the show [5:5]. His transformation is often cited as one of the reasons why viewers feel a strong connection to him and wish they had someone like Winston in their lives [5].

Overall, Winston's character development in New Girl showcases a successful transition from an uncertain beginning to becoming a key source of humor and heart within the series.

ORIGINAL POST

I started re-watching New Girl, and I honestly never noticed how different Winston’s personality was in the first few episodes as opposed to later.

It’s honestly just kind of funny how later we have “AS I LIVE AND BREATHE!? RAISIN!?”Winston. Which is totally different from Winston who got over competitive about bells😭😭

Season 1/2 Winston tried to replace Coach as the “man” of the house. It didn’t work.

Season 3 and onwards he became his own character, which suited Lamorne’s comedic capabilities A LOT better.

Kudos to whoever made the change, whether it was the writers or showrunner

  • the return of Coach kind of also allowed it to happen, so I’ve always said Coach was very essential to the show’s success and Winston’s character development

I've seen in interviews that because Coach had to leave they were sort of scrambling the writing a bit and had to slot Winston into that role: sport bro. It was a mix of Lamorne's improv skills and the writers that came to the decision to be like ya let's make him a beautiful little weirdo.

To be honest I was always confused why was Coach introduced in the Ep1 and then got away while Winston came in. It always seem so odd to me

If you actually listen to Lamorne talk about his role as Winston, he wasn't actually a part of the script. The writers made him up episode 2 and they didn't know what to do with him or how he fit yet.

Every character of the loft goes through such tremendous character development (part of why I love the show so dearly) and Winston's development is arguably the most drastic due to him having to over come a character role not fully being fleshed out ever.

Everyone is great and I love them, but Winston takes the cake. He's the best ❤️

I agree. While they were certainly figuring things out with his character and he kept getting better andbetter, he did have funny moments in the earlier seasons.

Like the one you mentioned, and also: singing his little heart out to Wicked or being so naughty after sipping on cocktails or the whole GIRL, WHAT YO NAME IS? WHAT THAT THANG DO?

I know the truth is that they weren't sure what to do with him, but I think it could even be explained that he was slowly getting back into American life after coming back from Latvia. They even wrote him in as being lost in life and not knowing what to do after basketball, and I think they did a really good transition from not knowing what to do with him to giving him this awesome and distinct personality.

Well they planned the show for Coach, but then he got a new show so they had to add in a whole new character. Took.them a while to find his groove

I think the writers admitted they weren't sure to do with him a lot of the time early on. They didn't really let him be funny until S3. Even if it was accidental, you could attribute early Winston to him not coming out of his shell yet, not dissimilar to Nick. Early season Winston was embarrassed about liking bubbles, but later Winston just owned all his weirdness.

Was the character of Winston never meant to exist?

Posted by t0tallyawes0me7 · in r/NewGirl · 3 years ago

Question/Discussion:

So Coach left after the pilot because the actor ended up needing to go to another show, and Winston came in after the pilot to replace him.

I'm wondering, was Winston a character that was already created, and expected to appear at some point (as a guest star, cameo, series regular, etc.)? Or did the show find a brand new actor and completely invent the character of Winston after Coach had to leave? Meaning that, if Coach's actor never had to leave, then Winston would have never appeared in the show at all.

I'm curious because I think Winston is an awesome character, and I can't imagine the show without his quirkiness! I love the dynamic of Nick, Schmidt and Winston in this show.

I also really appreciate that they didn't just recast Coach after he left. I'm glad that they were able to bring him back as a character later on.

tl;dr: Would "Winston" never have existed in New Girl if Coach didn't have to leave the show after the pilot?

I ALWAYS thought this... It always seemed like they brought in Winston to be the athletic "coach" like character. And at first they tried to play it that way.

I think as the show evolved they let Winston evolve into the character that Lamorne could naturally play better

15 upvotes on reddit
AndrewIsOnline · 3 years ago

It wasn’t “they tried to make it like X”

It was… we already have all these plots written out so we are just changing them as little as possible, and once the first few episodes are done they have time to write him into a new character all his own

sassypapaya · 3 years ago

I may be interpreting it incorrectly, but from listening to the podcast it sounds like you are right. I think they auditioned Lamorne for the part of Coach initially, but ended up going a different way (Damon) because Lamorne accepted an offer on another show. Then Damon had to leave to do another show, so they were looking to add in a character and Lamorne was able to come back so they created Winston. Zooey mentioned that after the pilot she and others petitioned hard to bring Lamorne on…it’s all kind of convoluted but it really worked out perfectly! Winston is such a great character and Lamorne is perfect

I love this! I think you can tell too, based on how hard they pushed the sports guy thing on Winston at first. Once they really lean into what makes Lamorne such a great actor and comedian, that’s when Winston gets great

Winston’s character change explanation

Posted by [deleted] · in r/NewGirl · 2 years ago

Does anyone have any theory’s on why Winston changed from season one to around season 3?

I know in real life the writers probably just didn’t know what to do with her character at first, then settled on the lovable goofball we have now.

But, I’m the context of the show, does anyone have any theories? Like maybe a prank went wrong and he hit his head, making him less serious 😂

My understanding is: They originally wrote the character for Damon Waynes junior (coach), but DWj ended up acting on another show and couldn’t do both. So after the pilot, Lamorne morris (Winston) replaced DWj but played what should’ve been coach’s character traits and personality. After season 1, DWj’s other show got canceled, they added him back to the script and transitioned Winston from the “coach” character personality to the goofball that he became.

I watched a video that said that the writers followed a similar model that Friends did with the characters. So there’s the “will they won’t they” of Nick and Jess (Ross and Rachel) and then the Type A neat freak of Schmidt (Monica) the player of Coach (Joey) and then the quirky silly one for comedic relief of Winston (Phoebe). The video was saying if you look closely most sitcoms follow a similar model. While the characters between the shows are VERY different, each one serves a purpose for the writers and it makes writing storylines easier. So Winston became silly and goofy so that each episode had a goofy moment. You can always rely on him for a laugh

When I was young I thought Chandler was the funniest and Ross was boring. As an adult I realised Ross is by far the most funny. Winston 2.0 is 10x funnier than Winston 1.0 and he became the best character.

Idk I see it as him leaning more into his weirdness as he's looking for his identity after losing his basketball career, since he never really chose pro basketball for himself but totally relied on it for an identity (like with shelby) I think it works ultimately :)

I am realising why I like Winston

Posted by Research_Tasty · in r/NewGirl · 7 months ago

I Think Schmidt and Nick are funnier characters.

But I like Winston. I was watching the scene where He is trying to remember his 'sidewalk joke' And I realised.

Its because he is a great actor. Thats why Winston works, just like Ross worked while Joey and Chandler being funnier characters. David schwimmer was by far the best actor.

It just an opinion, but the other guys break characters a lot. Max Greenfield trying to hide his laugh and Jake Johnsons subtle breaking the fourth Wall.

Winston never breaks. He commits no matter how silly it gets and it pays off.

Lamorne is such a great actor. But I think what makes the guys so funny is the sheer randomness of some of the acts.

Like Nick’s friendship with Tran, every mispronunciation from Schmidt and then the most goofy shit from Winston. When he says “silly billy” and gets coach to react to it.

He’s amazing.

That in s1, they say that Winston is very talented at a lot of things and picks up things easy and is a jerk about it.. but then in later seasons they always say he is bad at everything. I think Jess and him becoming friends made him feel like he could be himself and that’s why he starts being the sweetest guy and showing his weirdness. But I wonder why they all the sudden turned Winston into being bad at everything from being so good at everything.

Jess + Winston Character Development

Posted by my_posting_page · in r/NewGirl · 2 years ago

Was thinking: Is it fair to say that while Winston gets way more weird + zany throughout the series, Jess gets less weird + zany?

And if so, perhaps this is helpful for the show. Like, was rewatching a season 1 episode just now, and Jess is a total adorable goofball, and Winston's often basically the straight man. And maybe later on, when Winston is nonstop bizarre hilarity, it's helpful that Jess isn't taking up that space anymore?

Idk, really love the show!

This actually applies to other characters as well. Nick was quite smart and intelligent before like how he fancy fixed everything at the loft which needed brains but later on we see he's become dumber and dumber. The same goes with Schmidt. Schmidt was a bit more douche-y and a lovable idiot, but season 4 onwards he became quite smart and less douche-y. I love the show nonetheless!

How did Winston's character develop in New Girl

Key Considerations on Winston's Character Development in New Girl

  1. Initial Introduction: Winston Bishop, played by Lamorne Morris, is introduced in Season 1 as a former basketball player who is somewhat goofy and lacks direction after moving back in with his college friends.
