What Redditors are Saying

How Long Does It Take to Beat Subnautica: Below Zero?

TL;DR Subnautica: Below Zero typically takes between 10 to 40 hours to complete, depending on your playstyle and familiarity with the game.

Average Completion Time

For first-time players, Subnautica: Below Zero can take anywhere from 10 to 20 hours to complete [3:1][3:2]. Players who are more experienced or who have played the game before might finish it in around 5 to 15 hours [3:3]. If you aim for a completionist approach, exploring every nook and cranny, it could extend up to 40 hours [3:4].

Factors Affecting Completion Time

Several factors can affect how long it takes to beat the game. Building elaborate bases can significantly increase playtime [1:2], as can spending time exploring and collecting resources rather than focusing solely on the storyline [5:4]. Additionally, players who get lost or die frequently may find their playtime extended [3:3].

Playstyle Variations

Different players have varied experiences based on their playstyle. Some players rush through the game to complete it quickly, while others take their time to explore and enjoy the environment [4:1][4:3]. The fear factor of the game's underwater creatures can also slow down progress for some players [4:6].

Completionist vs. Story Focused

Players who focus on exploring and collecting items, rather than just completing the story, tend to spend more time in the game. One user mentioned taking nearly 60 hours on their first playthrough without a guide [5:3]. Conversely, those using guides or familiar with the game can complete it much faster, sometimes in under 10 hours [5:2].

In summary, the time it takes to beat Subnautica: Below Zero varies widely based on individual playstyle, goals, and familiarity with the game mechanics.

2.5 days, but I did create a base with every form of creature in its own containment unit and at least one base per biome. And it took me 5 hours to build my first construction tool, so that also addes to the time...

I still haven't beat the first Subnautica. It took me way too long to figure out how to start building self-sustaining resources (multi-purpose room, water filtration system, etc). I also didn't know I was supposed to venture into the Aurora for the prawn suit and rocket because the reaper in that area made it seem like I wasn't supposed to be there. Once I started building the platform for the rocket, I was told to find nickel ore and I just gave up because I didn't want to "waste" hours looking to see where I'd find nickel.

I started Below Zero this past weekend and I'm having a way better time because I know what I have to do now. I've also been told by a friend to "discover death", which means to not be scared of dying because it's truly the only way to push the boundaries of exploration. It just sucks when I die and drop all the valuable minerals I collected during the trek lol.

A couple of months but that is because I like to slap some other games in my playtime as not to burn myself out on a game, which can even happen on singleplayer games.

It took me 10 hours start to finish. I did not build an elaborate base, just a normal base with a vehicle dock and two rooms for my storage or other stuff.

I did it in about 10 but I skipped a lot of stuff like watching the Sunbeam get destroyed and I found an entrance to the Lost River that was basically 500m or so from a Lava Zone hole. Also I got lucky with some of my fragment spawns and I already knew where some were.

I think the only way to do it in 10 hours is if you use a guide the whole time, have played it already, and/or watched a streamer beat the game. It’s WAY longer than that if you care about exploring or the story. It took me nearly 60 hours the first time (without a guide), and 40 the second.

Three and a half RL days for my first playthrough. I'm on my second one now and i focus much more on exploring, collecting and general not story related nonsense so I can play much longer this time.

I see everyone saying they did it in less then 10 hours and other times. I still haven’t beet the game and I’m 6 days in! ( If you are wondering what point I’m at, I’ve been to the lost river a couple times, but the last time I went, I lost my cyclops and died of dehydration. So now I have to rebuild a cyclops and get my prawn back.)

I checked my old saves, they sit at roughly 30 hours on average. But that's all with playing the game before (since early access), so knowing what to do. Oldest save I still have is from 2017 during early access, sitting at 2 days. It's notably longer since there was actually parts of the story still missing.

I recently played a Hardcore game in around 22 hours play time. And that's with visiting a ton of places, build one complete base and getting all tech and important story locations.
Before that I did a base-only challenge, so just extra O2 and seaglide and build bases everywhere (12+ bases). That took 38 hours. That was really fun actually.

My advice would be: Savor the experience, every moment only passes once. This game is re-playable, but it's never again like the first time.

Have fun, Adventurer.

If you pretty thoroughly explore and discover most of the things, probably around 30 hours. The Sam and Marguerit storylines are optional, so you can miss any part of them and still beat the game.

1 upvotes on reddit
Phobia--- · 4 years ago

There are three main plots in below zero. Two are optional and one is mandatory. Sam and Margaret’s storylines are optional and Alan’s has to happen in order to finish. Where are you at with Alan?

I was stuck with Alan's storyline at some point too. What caused it was me scanning one of the alien artifacts before I met Alan and thinking it would still count towards his storyline after meeting him. Had to go back to it to trigger his dialogue in order to continue the storyline.

As far as game length goes it took me around 13.5 hours as well to finish the game but I also had previous experience from EA.

1 upvotes on reddit
Dart112 · OP · 4 years ago

Except for artifacts and stuff.

1 upvotes on reddit
TargetGB · 4 years ago

Without playing the game in EA you can expect it to take around 25 hours, possibly a bit longer if you have not played the original either.

1 upvotes on reddit
yellowcavefrog · 4 years ago

I don’t have a fresh outlook since I played in EA before the story change, but without base building I took 13.5 hours to beat the game for the first time. The story isn’t a concrete progression past meeting the mysterious lady in My experience, so you may take 50 hours or may decide on some tutorials and take 30, or have fun building a giant base and take 100. Enjoy yourself, game is great!

I have played about 2 days and 38 minutes on my current file, have buildt my third base at the ghost tree in the lost river and I haven't explored the Inactive/active lava zone yet... I really enjoy it to buildt gigantic base's, but I think im a bit too slow...

Do you have any tipps for me? (upgrades, locations, what I should do next?)

How long did you need to beat the game? Am I maybe a little bit too unfocused?

Each player takes a different time according to his playing style. Many enjoy focus on exploring, others prefer the mega-basebuilding style... I think there is not a correct amount of time. That's not unfocused, just enjoy it in your way :)

In my first game I spent a loooooot of time building, looking for materials and trying out each new feature instead hardcore exploring. My advice? NEVER throw away quartz.

It took me about 40 hours the first time, and I basically speedrunned the lava zones because I hate the prawn movement so would just whip out my seaglide and book it to the places I needed to be in there. So basically about 38 hours to get to your point, and 2 hours for the rest of the game. But after I did that, I spent a lot of time basebuilding and exploring in that same file. Subnautica takes however long you want it to- the hardcore glitchless speedrun time is still less than 2 hours I believe.

[Discussion] Is below zero worth it?

Posted by Temporary_Check4619 · in r/Subnautica_Below_Zero · 4 months ago

I really liked the original subnautica - I have about 40 hours on the game and platinumed it (which is super easy as all you have to do is complete the game with the odd trophy) and I am thinking about buying below zero.

I’m going to buy below zero anyway but I would just like to know if it is as bad as people say it is.

Ps. Please don’t spoil it

Yes, if the original was a 10/10 then BZ is an 8/10. More linear and story driven than the first, but still a great game. The base building and decorating aspect is massively improved in BZ

The "fear" and sense of being completely isolated is probably the weakest point of BZ to me without going spoiler. It feels much more discovery driven. It's still good but I'm at a 7/10 because the first was so right on point. I still love playing it and I'm glad I beat it.

Oh, and yes, you are swimming slower and the sea glide is slower 😁

I like it, at least. It has its quirks and annoyances, like the leviathan clipping into my base nonstop. But, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I feel like the people here saying 10/10 vs 8/10 have the right of it.

AI Answer

🤖

how long does it take to beat subnautica below zero

Key Considerations for Beating Subnautica: Below Zero

  1. Playstyle: The time to complete the game can vary significantly based on your playstyle. If you focus on the main storyline, you may finish faster than if you explore and gather resources extensively.

  2. Main Story vs. Completionist:

    • Main Story: Approximately 10-15 hours.
    • Completionist Run: If you aim to explore everything, gather all resources, and complete all side quests, it can take around 20-30 hours.
  3. Difficulty Level: The difficulty setting can also affect your playtime. Playing on a harder difficulty may require more time for resource gathering and survival.

  4. Experience with the Game: If you're familiar with the mechanics from the original Subnautica, you may progress faster than a new player.

Takeaway: Expect to spend around 10-15 hours for a straightforward playthrough, but allow for 20-30 hours if you want to fully explore and complete all aspects of the game. Enjoy the immersive underwater experience!
