Current and Future Seasons
As of the latest discussions, "The Simpsons" has been renewed for four additional seasons, bringing the total to 40 seasons [1]. However, these upcoming seasons are expected to be shorter than usual, with only 15 episodes each unless Disney orders more exclusive episodes
[1].
Historical Context
"The Simpsons" premiered its movie after 18 seasons, and it has been 18 years since that event [3]. This gives some perspective on how long the show has been running and its historical significance.
Quality and Episode Count
There is a consensus among fans that the show's quality fluctuates across different eras. Many fans consider the first 10 seasons as the "golden years," while others have found enjoyment in later seasons, particularly from season 33 onwards [2:4],
[5:3]. Shorter seasons have been noted to improve the show's quality by allowing more thought to be put into episodes
[1:4].
Future Prospects
The future of the show is often discussed in terms of its financial success and the potential impact of losing key cast members [4:1],
[4:2]. While there is no definitive answer as to when the show will end, it seems likely to continue as long as it remains profitable.
For those interested in watching or re-watching "The Simpsons," starting with the first 10 seasons is highly recommended, as they are considered essential viewing by many fans [5:1],
[5:3].
The Simpsons has been renewed with 4 new seasons. Bringing it to 40 seasons! However, these seasons will only have 15 episodes each from Fox so unless Disney orders more exclusive episodes, these will be the second shortest seasons in the show's history. I don't understand why a show whose intention is that when all the writers die, the show continues and never ends is being renewed for just a few episodes. Each season of The Simpsons normally has 22 episodes, does this mean that Disney will give Fox permission to make 15 episodes and will order 7 straight to streaming for each season? Please tell me if this is what will happen because I don't understand. They started this with season 36 that followed (almost) this logic, season 36 aired 18 episodes on Fox. In addition, there were 3 Disney+ exclusive episodes (O C'mon All Ye Faithful, Yellow Planet and The Past and the Furious) concluding the season with 21 episodes (just missing 1). So, will they follow the logic of 15 episodes on Fox and 7 on Disney+ or will the seasons become shorter?
I wish they'd have the stones to go ahead and age up the characters. They've done enough "future" stories in recent seasons. Do a season of accurately aged characters. So what if it flops; everyone expects it to anyway, because they're still busy fellating season 5 anyway.every new season is the devil because one guy who wrote a couple of episodes back when got a talk show, and everything before that is GOD now because he happened to be in the room, maybe.
Shorter seasons have definitely been benefitting the show, and are likely the cause of its recent bump in quality. It allows more thought to be put into episodes
Agreed, and honestly, they could have made the last few even shorter. I count about 8-9 decent episodes each from, say 33-36. (Okay, now, don't y'all start with the he's already dead GIF. Nothing in this universe will ever top seasons 2-9.)
I think that the show doesn’t need to top seasons 1-9, it just needs to be good on its own. It’s definitely been able to achieve that through most of its life, now more than ever, which is why I’ve never had an issue with modern Simpsons
I realy didnt like this concept of some episodes on fox, others on disney+
It is very hard to archive, cuz I dont know how to number disney episodes (for the curious, here is my archive: https://pastebin.com/WVd8N3Wp)
I started with the movie in 2007, then I forget they existed, until February 2014 when I downloaded Season1-Season17, then I got hooked, then downloaded til season 25, and Season 26 was my first one that I watched one episode as it got released (Watch, archive, rinse and repeat, every year)
Should Yellow Planet be S36E15 cuz its after S36E14 - P.S. I Hate You
Because if it is, then my later episodes have numbering wrong and I managed to misname them cuz of that
Or should I number it differently and put it in separate folder?
Also I forgot to watch Yellow planet, cuz it wasnt on fox :)
I consider myself a super fan, to the point where I have a tattoo of Homer. Been watching for over 25 years.
But, like your average r/ Simpsons user, I only really like the first 10 seasons or so.
Have decided now I’m going to watch them all, it’s a bit odd that I have them all available and haven’t even seen half of them. And I feel like it’ll finally end in the next few years and I’d like to be in a good position to watch the final season when it comes, as I really don’t know about any recent lore. Apparently Bart got a new teacher? Etc
Have you seen them all?
I often say I will do this but I get into seasons 13-19 every time and the quality is so poor. I’m yet to go further, but perhaps just need to stick if on in the background and get through it

When they showed up on Disney+, I was amazed to realize that there were more episodes I hadn't seen than the number I had seen. It was scary to think how long it has been since I watched it live on air every week.
I actually like the new seasons. They’re not perfect or anything; there’s some jokes that make me laugh and there’s interesting stories. If you’re trying to watch Simpsons after the golden age it can be rough. I recommend skipping forward to the HD era. It’s like watching a different show, it’s made me more open minded about the weirder episodes
Yeah I think season 33 on is pretty solid. I did skip to get there because I tapped out in the 20 something's
Is it even possible?
I never stopped watching
Yes. Several times.

I would love for them to get the original writers together for a new movie when they end it.
Love to hear your explanations as to how/when/why you think the show will go off the air.
Good question. I agree with the other person that whenever someone really important dies they'll probably end it. That could be in 5-10
No idea. If I had a TV show, I'd run that sucker into the ground.
While ever it's the cash making behemoth that it is, good or bad it'll exist. Personally I think once one or two main cast die, then it'll end.
Yeah they usually don't try to replace voice actors so I expect they'll do the sensible thing.
Want to get back into The Simpsons. What seasons are required watching?
I saw probably most of the first 10 seasons growing up but haven’t seen an episode in a VERY long time.
Now that I have Disney Plus I want to get back into it, start with the golden years and then watch selected recommended seasons or episodes.
Starting from the very beginning...what do I NEED to watch?
Thanks in advance!
It's a sitcom, every episode is unrelated. Just start from the beginning and stop/come back to it whenever you feel like watching it.
That's not true, what about the Mr. Burns two parter?
But pretty much 1-12 are the best years.
I’m a Completionist so I’ll suggest all of it but that’s me. Definitely the first 10 seasons. I’m working my way through them as well. I think I’m on 17.
Or have you watched every season?
Amount I haven’t seen.
I’m 35, and got into the show when I was about 9. That puts me at around the season 8 mark, but still able to watch reruns and piece things together once the season DVDs came out. Around season 12 is when I sort of just interest in newer episodes
Amount, I haven’t.(Skipped some episodes from S34)
I’ve seen all of them ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The amount I haven’t
Def the amount I haven’t seen. I was a die hard OG fan (first aired when I was 17), but I slowly noped out completely by like season 15 or so.
The Simpsons began in 1989 the same year Seinfeld began. Seinfeld lasted 9 seasons and ended in 1998, that same year Seinfeld ended, That 70's show began and lasted 8 seasons ending in the year 2006, that same year That 70's show ended, Dexter began and it ran 8 seasons ending in 2013, in that same year Dexter ended Brooklyn Nine Nie began and it ran 8 seasons finally ending in 2021. All these TV shows are considered successful as the average life span of a TV show is about 6-7 seasons and all these shows lasted 8 seasons with Seinfeld lasting 9. Yet all combined took place within the span of The Simpsons which as a bonus began the same year that Webster, Family Ties, Dynasty, and The Smurfs ended.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the current-longest live action sitcom, is currently airing it's 15th season. The Simpsons was airing their 17th season when Sunny first premiered.
When the simpsons first aired on the Tracy Ulman show I was 2 years older than Bart, now I am 7 years older than Homer
cyril0 for scale
When the Simpsons started, even though we had cable in my house, it was 13 channels here in western Canada, and that included the weather channel, the scrolling news channel, the home shopping network. It was basically ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CTV, CBC & what is now called Global. No sports networks, no news networks, no kids channels, not even Fox.
To think about how much TV has changed just in the lifespan of the Simpsons is crazy.
The Simpsons premiered on December 17, 1989.
Taylor Swift was four days old at the time.
What a great week in history
BW was 60 in 1989.
The Simpsons follows a traditional schedule of a single season per year, while Survivor and many other reality shows air multiple seasons per year.
A season does not equal a year.
A network can push out a 10 episode season 3 times a year, by the time the show is 4 years old there would already be 12 seasons.
A season of survivor is defined by the cast/contestants, whereas a season of the Simpson’s is defined by the period of time where new episodes are released on a nearly weekly basis. Typical sitcom shows traditionally run new episodes between September/October and may/June and then take a break in the summer before the next season starts
Only 785 episodes have aired so far, this math is not mathing
I mean, unless you think they’re going to release another movie before they release another 15 eps…
I thought there would be more tbh
It should have been Six seasons and a movie , its like we dont live in a community anymore !
Wait, there's more One Piece than Simpsons?
Like 300 episodes more too lol
More star trek than simpsons too, I don't know if that is a surprise.
Sure, but Homer is the true nakama in our hearts.
He was elected to wrath, not to math!
Time for a sequel?
The episode that aired after the movie had the chalkboard gag say "i will not wait 20 years to make another movie", movie came out in 2007 they still have like 2 years to live up to this
I actually would have thought there were way more post movie episodes than pre movie episodes.
The movie was great. I'd be down for another one to sunset the series.
opa, tudo? alguém sabe dizer se existem as primeiras temporadas ou da (7-20) dubladas por ai? nunca consegui achar a serie toda completa, inclusive só acho as novas temporadas
