Main Cast Members
The main cast members of The Simpsons have been voicing their characters for decades, starting from the show's inception in 1987 on The Tracey Ullman Show. The principal voice actors include Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and Harry Shearer. Each has contributed significantly to the show, with Castellaneta, Azaria, and Shearer known for voicing multiple characters [3].
Guest and Former Voice Actors
Phil Hartman was a notable guest actor who voiced characters such as Troy McClure before his untimely death [1:2]. Jon Lovitz also contributed by voicing several characters throughout the series
[4].
Voice Actor Longevity and Replacement
The longevity of the voice actors is remarkable, with many having voiced their characters for over half their lives. There has been discussion about whether the show could continue with different voice actors or even AI versions of the current cast. However, the original voice actors are highly valued, and any replacements would need to maintain the show's quality [5:10]
[5:8].
Behind-the-Scenes Contributions
Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, named many of the characters after his own family members, adding a personal touch to the show [2]. Sam Simon, another key figure, added many details that fans know and love today
[2:1].
In summary, the voice actors of The Simpsons have become iconic figures in animation, contributing to the show's enduring popularity and cultural impact.
Noone was better than Phil Hartman as Troy McClure
Yeardley Smith … cmon, really? The rest of the principle cast is pulling at minimum quadruple duty, you lazy ass
To be fair, Yeardley Smith has never been know for having much vocal range. Even outside of The Simpsons, she never did anything different with her voice in anything she appeared in. She tends to be cast in things less so because of her range and more because of her unique voice.
Oh, and she once cameoed as herself, so there's that.
If we’re casting aspersions what about Chris Miller? Sitting there in the corner voicing nothing.
He's literally the voice that says "Theeeee Simpppppp^sonsssss"
And that's just her normal voice.
I wonder if that's their real voice too
This is out of date now.
“The character Bart was not named after a real person but is an anagram of “brat,” chosen by Groening to avoid naming a character after himself.”—Perplexity
I’ve heard him say Bart is based on his brother, and that he was most like Lisa.
Dan Castellaneta voiced Grandpa, too.
They started as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. My dad was working on the show at the time and from how he tells it, it was very low key and low committal animated sketch. Nobody really expected it to go anywhere. My dad has original drawings of the full family by Groening before the sketch aired but he somehow lost the sketch of Bart.
Bart is always getting lost.
Yup, it was a comic that was appearing in the Village Voice which had spawned books, t-shirts and other merch.
He was worried that if he pitched the characters, he'd lose the rights and the income, so he pitched his own family.
Groening makes about $20MM per year from The Simpsons, so it seems to have worked out.
I love this because i can hear Homer's voice coming up with the "characters"
Same goes for the South Park creators. Randy, Sharon, Gerald and Sheila are the names of the creators’ parents
And Shelly is Trey Parker’s sister’s name.
If you head up into North Portland you’ll find Van Houten Ave up by St Johns. The Simpsons names are a love letter to Portland.
A bouncer in Eugene told me a decade ago that springfield oregon is the springfield Groening based the show on. He said Groening’s mom had lived there.
Honestly kind of makes sense: iirc there is statue of some fur trapper in the center of town reminiscent of Jedidiah Springfield. Springfield is the more working class town with Eugene the more white collar town right next to it across the river.
Also, while the basis of the show is Groenings, but Sam Simon added all the details we all know and love.
Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, and Yeardley Smith have been doing their Simpsons voices since 1987 on The Tracey Ullman Show (38 years). This is more than half of each of their current ages (67, 74, 67, and 61, respectively). Hank Azaria has been doing his voices since the show's premiere in 1989 (36 years). This is more than half of his current age (61). The only exception is Harry Shearer, who has been doing his voices for 36 years and is currently 81.
I find it kinda hilarious that they all earn the same, yet one of them only voices one character instead of multiple.
Same for Julie Kavner really. She only voices four regular characters (Marge, Patty and Selma, and Jacqueline Bouvier), but Jacqueline rarely appears and Patty and Selma basically have the same voice. Nancy Cartwright is more prominent than Smith and Kavner but she still only plays like five regular characters.
Meanwhile, Castellenata, Azaria and Shearer play dozens of characters each.
To me that either proves
A. They still love doing it
B. FOX is holding their families hostage
Seriously, has nobody noticed how none of the Simpsons' cast do interviews now?
Most actors get paid by voice line. So if one speaks more in a given episode, I imagine they're paid more that episode.
The main cast members are paid per episode, not per line.
It's really not unusual to replace voices in animated programmes. In various languagea the Simpsons' voices have changed before already...
I never understood why they get so dramatic and kill characters when the English VA dies or quits.
Edit: they didn't mind changing Dr Hibbert with a completely different voice actor recently.
Gabbo is voiced by Azaria, not Castellaneta, but yeah.
All the kids in Springfield are SOBs
And then there is Family guy, where Seth McFarlane voices everyone who is male
Azaria is one of the youngest members of the cast and barring a major health issue should be around for some time yet. 61 isn’t that old.
Harry Shearer was already going to retire like 10 years ago but changed his mind. The showrunner said he believes that those roles can be recast if it comes to it.
This is one of the few situations where I think the voice actors should be replaced by AI versions of themselves, specifically trained on seasons 2-15. Pay them the same salaries but bring back the voices that didn’t sound quite so tired.
Hold on, voice acting on an animated show isn't the same as being a muscle bound action star? Say it ain't so!
The review, “Bit enjoyed by all,” speaks for itself.
Do you think they paid Jon to say “Hello” 4 times or did they just pay him to say it once and then quadruple it on the track?
Cheap bastards
Learn from a professional, kid
ACTING!!!
It stinks!
Yes u/Not_Cleaver everything stinks
So, for better or worse, the Simpsons has been on television for a long, long time. There is currently no end in sight as the main family are happy to return for voice work. Whether you think this is a positive or negative thing is up to you, but either what its what is happening.
I'm wondering at which point the characters and the show become perennial cartoon creations like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny, or if the show will stop dead in its tracks at some point and never return?
I understand that in the past when a VA has passed they're retired the character, such as Troye/Lionel and Edna. However, has the Simpsons evolved past a tv show that is its own creation and moved into a part of the cultural zeitgeist?
Other cartoon characters are kept essentially the same but re-tooled every now and again, as I said with Bugs and Mickey. Would it be possible that The Simpsons would sell their IP and allow the continual creation of the show with voice mimics?
It seems absurd but also it has been on the air for over thirty years. It's not that much of a cognitive leap.
It was just a passing thought I had. What do you think?
Rick and Morty are obviously currently going through a pretty high-profile change of voice actors. I'm not sure how that's playing out, I haven't watched the show for a while.
I'm guessing as long as the writing was strong and the voices not too egregiously altered then it could be business as usual.
Rick and Morty is not The Simpsons. One is a niche show for disaffected nerds, and the other is an institution that's been on probably longer than you've been alive.
R&m has been great with new voices, the strength of their writing is king and that hasn't changed. The new voices are pretty fantastic too. Sets a bar for the industry too, nobody is irreplaceable so don't be a twat.
I watched the s7 premiere, didn’t notice the voice changes at all, but the writing felt both overstuffed AND lazy. I’m definitely ready to walk away from it
Pretty badly, if I'm honest. The voicealikes do a good job, but it's still extremely obvious something is off. Roiland's energy and attitude is very obvious in its absence. They should have had the common sense to end the show.
I think Rick and Morty is done, it will limp on a few more seasons but its not hot anymore.
I'd settle for just replacing Julie Kavner. Let the poor woman rest 😥

But to consider your question... Disney is probably gonna AI the main cast voices, just like they are doing with Darth Vader.
They legally can't. They can do it with Vader because James Earl Jones sold his voice rights to them. If it were legal to do it without permission and rights, they would've done it long ago and there's no way the voice actors will sell their voice rights away or give Disney permission, not when they're getting paid insane money per episode.
Networks like animation 'cause they don't have to pay the actors squat!
Plus they can replace them, and no one can tell the diddly-ifference.
The hourly rate is from $15 up to $100+ per hour. The Simpsons voice actors make millions of dollars based on their contract.
I know one they won’t…
Billy West and Tom Kenny are the men that voiced our generation, and then Terra Strong and Cree Summer were the women who voiced our generation.
It fucking floored me when I realized tom Kenny also voiced woody Johnson in brickleberry on Comedy Central in 13.
And you can’t forget Mr. Lawrence in that list. Not only is he plankton he was also our favorite turtle. He was filburt from rocko
Turn the page then wash your hands. Then you turn the page then you wash your hands.
You forgot about Grey DeLisle. But I am on the younger side of the generation
Yeah there are many VAs who are "in everything," but Billy, Tom, Terra, and Cree are just like "the 4 that make every cartoon reviewer say 'oh look, it's you again.'"
Tara is also helping us go through adulthood
We grew up in the golden age of cartoons where voice actors were actually actors and not just random non-acting celebrities who phone it in for a couple of hours in a booth and move on to the next clout-chasing endeavor.
Look up Andrea Romano's work as a casting director and voice director. She had her hands in almost everything we enjoyed growing up. It's largely thanks to her efforts that we grew up during a sort of animation renaissance.
Including the one and only Fry!!
No. I married Doug….
Now divorced but no ill will. Yes he was dressed up as Doug for Halloween but yes his name is Doug. Also Jim Jinkins was going to OSU when the ex was a kid. It’s uncanny. I feel he saw him wandering around a grocery store or shit.
Tehe Billy West, what a stupid phony made up name.
Matthew Abram Groening was born in Portland, Oregon—his dad’s name was Homer, for real. Growing up in Portland definitely shaped his worldview. You can feel that weird, dry, slightly rebellious tone in The Simpsons. A lot of people don’t realize this, but several characters are actually named after Portland streets: Flanders, Lovejoy, Quimby, Kearney, Terwilliger, Burnside.
When I worked the lube desk at Beaverton Toyota back in the early 2000’s I had a little blue Camry come in for an oil change. I pulled up the plate in our system and the name that popped up was Margaret Groening.
While I was checking her in I had to ask if she was related to Matt. He is her son, and he had bought her the car after the Simpson got really big. She was a very sweet lady.
So, yes, I have met the real life inspiration for Marge Simpson.
Oh man I remember reading her obit a few years back, and now I am sad. Here a photo of the clipping. Her maiden name was Wiggum (Chief Wiggum)
https://www.portablepress.com/blog/2013/05/the-real-marge-simpson/
I can’t believe that this is how I realize that Maggie is named after her mom. 🤦♀️
Social worker: And what about Margaret?
Homer: Who?
Marge: Maggie!
Homer: Oh...
My mom sold bedding to his sister Lisa
Don't forget about Reverend Lovejoy, NW Lovejoy.
Don’t forget Sideshow Bob Terwilliger !
Every time I see a NE Flanders sign, I think of Ned.
Hens love roosters Geese love ganders Everyone else loves Ned Flanders (Not me!) Everyone who counts loves Ned Flanders
Stupid sexy Flanders
Down here in Eugene, next to Springfield, we have Skinner Butte. I used to work for the power company in Springfield and felt a little like Homer.
I’ve always wondered if the “Skinner’s Butt” balloon was a direct reference. Seems like it must be.
The Simpsons has six main voice actors Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and Harry Shearer but someday when the show does finally end who's career will probably not go anywhere the most?
Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer do the most outside of The Simpsons now, with Julie Kavner doing the least.
I doubt anyone is terribly concerned about their post-Simpsons career.
They’re all, like, 70+ year-old multi-gazillionaires - how many of them do you think will even still be alive by the time the show is over, much less would ever even need to work again even if they do survive the show?
Go nowhere? Where is there to go? They are old and have hundreds of millions of dollars of FU money. Lol. Who cares?
Can you imagine their life. The amount of money they make per episode. And recording a season can’t take much more then a month.
When the rolling stones break up I could really see Mick Jagger making a name for himself
they're all retirement age and had careers before the simpsons, this is an odd premise for a question
Mine is Tress MacNile. She's a gem!
Phil Hartman, in perpetuity
Kelsey grammer
Hank Azria. RIP Apu...
Fucking hell man can't people take a joke? There was this show called Shahs of Sunset which was an insult to every fiber of being a Persian... No one complained. What the fuck man. Jesus fucking Christ. Shit.
Uh.... What?
Herschel Krustofsky, the voice behind Talking Krusty
I've noticed that Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park, Rick and Morty, and various other animated shows will use one voice actor for 5-10 different roles (i.e. Seth McFarlane). Does this cut down on budget costs for the show?
Partly that, and partly the residual income everytime that episode is broadcast. As far as I'm aware, you get paid more each rerun when your voice is used more than once
Look out Family Guy, I'm about to voice a show with 500 characters and have it be rerun for the next fifty years!
Seth McFarland created the show and the characters and he’s a voice actor so he likely had an idea for how they should sound and didn’t have anyone else who could take the role.
Edit: “the show” being Family Guy
who are the voice actors of The Simpsons?
