What Redditors are Saying

How Many Species of Dragon Are There in "How to Train Your Dragon"?

TL;DR The number of dragon species in the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise varies depending on the source, but estimates range from around 90 to over 100 species.

Variability Across Media

The total number of dragon species in the "How to Train Your Dragon" universe can differ significantly based on which media you consider. The films, TV series, and games each introduce different dragons, leading to varying counts. Some fans estimate around 97 species when considering movies, series, and games [1:1], while others suggest a total of 103 species across all media, including those mentioned by the crew [1:4].

Canon Considerations

When determining the number of dragon species, it's important to clarify what is considered canon. Some fans only count the movies, TV shows, and comics as canon, which leads to an estimate of about 90 species [1:5]. This distinction is crucial because other sources like games and crossbreeds can introduce additional species that might not be universally accepted as part of the core narrative.

Resources for Lists

For fans looking for comprehensive lists of dragon species, several resources are available. The "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - World of Dragons" book includes many dragons from the films [3:1]. Additionally, the HTTYD fandom wiki provides detailed information on dragon classes and species within the franchise [3:2].

Fan Engagement

The diversity of dragon species in "How to Train Your Dragon" has led to significant fan engagement, with some fans even attempting to compile their own books or documents listing all known species [1:6]. This enthusiasm highlights the complexity and richness of the dragon lore within the franchise.

Wow, that's a big question to answer! You'll need to clarify what world (s) you're considering, which can be one or more of:

  • the films
  • tv series
  • school of dragons
  • rise of berk
  • titan uprising (and all the weird crossbreeds that entails)
  • and probably more

Personally I dont count anything other than the movies, the tv shows and the black horse comics as cannon cause they can get really wild and out there with this type of stuff. But if you’re including everything with a httyd name on it its prob about 90ish dragon species

I believe it’s some number around 97, don’t know for sure, will check as soon as I get the chance. This is only movies, series, and games though, not including the books (since the dragons are so different)

Since the How to train your dragon franchise is owned by dreamworks and the franchise is swarming with hundreds of different dragon species

I've been thinking what if other dreamworks characters train and ride these dragons from the franchise

And what type of dragon would they have

I know hiccup says blue oleander is deadly to reptiles, hence deadly to dragons, but you cant tell me that dragons are cold blooded, and cant regulate body temperature (Half of them produce fire ffs).

Dragons, to me, can be whatever you want them to be.

Reptiles are probably the most well known type of dragon, but I definitly saw some that are fish, and some can definitely be mammals or even invertebrates.

I think I even saw that the Sea Shocker from HTTYD come from eels!

4 upvotes on reddit
Wombatypus8825 · 2 months ago

Ok, but fish are terrible for discussing taxonomy, since they’re so disconnected. I would assume that all dragons in the series are reptiles that evolve to survive in different environments. I agree that dragons can be whatever you want though.

2 upvotes on reddit
Otaliema · 2 months ago

In the HTTYD world they are related to reptiles, as most of the world has them related in at least superficial ways, scales, lays eggs etc.

When you actually dig into it, you can’t call them reptiles. The ability to breathe fire and set themselves on fire would kill any reptile from heat shock, and the ability to tolerate the cold without going into hibernation.

4 upvotes on reddit
Vivid_Situation_7431 · 2 months ago

My guess they would be in the Sphenodontidae family, which consists of ancient reptiles, with the only living species being the Tuatara.

Tuataras’ are cold blooded, but prefer cooler environments, which would fit the Archipelago.

Also, why couldn’t dragons be cold blooded? They don’t have fire inside of them. Instead, they produce gas that they light through some sort of sparking mechanism (think of the zippleback). Plus, we see Toothless warm up his bed in HttyD1, similar to a lizard basking on a rock that been out in the sun. Then the dragons nest was literally in a volcano.

2 upvotes on reddit
SpaceBeeGaming · 2 months ago

Hiccup does call Toothless a "useless reptile".

1 upvotes on reddit
ldentitymatrix · 2 months ago

Well I know that dinosaurs are reptiles and they're not cold blooded either. I think they're more like dinosaurs where there is not really a constant body temp but still much heat due to size and how scaling laws work. Scaling laws basically say that the surface to volume ratio is much smaller for large things than for small things. Which means more heat accumulates on the inside due to less contact and heat exchange with the environment.

How do you think Hiccup, Berk, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel, dragon hunters, etc, would fair against the dragons of the Dragob Slayer Codex? What kind of dragon would Hiccup had bonded if he's from this world? What kind of dragon would Drago and Grimmel use to conquer the world?

Some I think they could, some I think are untameable

The big difference is that some of these dragons are described as far more... animalistic than the ones in HTTYD, like for example I know that they could tame a Sicklemouth because iirc they respect their opponents and are known to spar so if they beat one in swordsmanship they could eventually tame it

But some others like the Kingsbane or the Hullbreaker that are seemingly more territorial and agressive I doubt can be tamed. If anything they remind me of the Snow Wraiths and how the team interacted with the adult ones. If anything they could be tamed if raised from birth because they seem intelligent enough, but it would still be like raising a Crocodile or a Cassowary

It essentially boils down to the worlds, in HTTYD dragons are more view as intelligent and communicative animals like say Wolves, while on the Dragonslayer Codex they are far more territorial and instinctive. One is for training the other is for slaying

2 upvotes on reddit
CertifiedMagpie · OP · 2 months ago

The Kinsbane is actually one of the more "peaceful" dragon believe it or not, because they're specialized in hunting other dragons, they almost never pay attention to smaller games, whenever they're on their King's Patrols an entourage of animals would follow them, towns would even settle right under the lair of Kinsbane and venerate them as local deities, as long as there are dragons to hunt, the Kinsbane would not attack

2 upvotes on reddit
Tomynator_88 · 2 months ago

Fr? I just remember reading that they were so high on testorerone that they were pretty agressive, had no clue of that but I guess it explains the size and the name (Like the King Cobra)

My point still stands though, even the most peaceful dragon there is only peaceful to humans because it focuses on hunting some other stuff, it still isn't a good idea to tame one (Funnily enough, just like King Cobras who are fairly peaceful towards humans)

Httyd takes place in like Greenland and has many different kinds of dragons. What about the other countries during that time? I’m sure in like China for example there was different kinds of dragons that were there that were not in Greenland. I don’t know but it’s cool to think about that there were probably different kinds of dragons in other countries.

If we take a look at rtte, it is actually in the norwegian sea as they have two weeks of midnight sun which means Berk's latitude is around 65°N, the only part of the greenland sea at that latitude is the sea above Iceland which Berk is definitely not that close to Iceland meaning Berk is in the norwegian sea

Do not, I repeat, EVER, show a single pixel from that Gods awful excuse for a book based movie. Even as a child, it let me down harder than my parents' divorce. It is a disgrace. Just because the dragon from it looked cool and was mildly acceptable does NOT excuse the movie's existence. We do NOT speak of the Eragon movie. We do not show pictures acknowledging the movies existence. EVER.

As an avid fan of Eragon, who shares and understands in your pain, I feel the need to point out to you that the first picture put in there is supposed to be Firedrake from Cornelia Funkes novel, Dragon Rider, which was similarly butchered- so it could be way worse. But yeah. What movie were we talking about?

Ps; I wonder if people in the sub are aware that Eragon is getting a d plus show...

They reuse so many assets, which I wouldn't mind normally but some of them are SO reused. Like get some different Toothless sounds, please... And the Speed Stingers are just recolored Raptors from JW, and Toothless constantly uses one of the Raptor barks that sounds like a turkey sound. Hate it, lol

Speed Stingers have been around a lot longer than 9 realms- they’re one of the first new dragons introduced after the first movie. And they do look different from real raptors- their head and body shape is quite a bit different.
