TL;DR
Chronological Viewing Order
The chronological order for watching the How to Train Your Dragon series includes movies, shorts, and TV shows. Start with the first movie, followed by the shorts "Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon," "Gift of the Night Fury," and "Book of Dragons" [1:1]
[2:1]. Next, watch the TV series "Riders of Berk" and "Defenders of Berk," which fill in the narrative between the first and second movies
[3:1]. Continue with "Dawn of the Dragon Racers" and "Race to the Edge" before moving on to the second movie
[2:2]. Finish with the third movie, "Homecoming," and "The Nine Realms"
[3:1].
Release Order vs. Chronological Order
While many fans suggest watching the series in chronological order for a coherent narrative experience, others prefer the release order as it reflects how audiences originally experienced the franchise [4:1]. Watching in release order can provide insight into how the series evolved over time.
Availability and Platforms
Finding all parts of the franchise might require accessing multiple platforms. Netflix hosts much of the content, while Amazon Prime offers the "Riders of Berk" and "Defenders of Berk" series [2:3]. Some shorts and series may be region-specific or available on other streaming services like Hulu or Peacock
[1:3].
Additional Content
Aside from the main series, there are comics that complement the TV shows, offering additional stories set within the same timeline [1:1]
[1:5]. These aren't essential for understanding the main narrative but can enrich the viewing experience for dedicated fans.
well if you would like to know about *everything* I have a comprehensive list I worked very hard on (: (it is in chronological order), it goes as follows:
How to Train Your Dragon (movie)
Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon (short)
Gift of the Night Fury (short)
Book of Dragons (short)
Riders of Berk (TV show) 20 episodes(and the respective comic volumes: 'Dragon Down', 'Dangers of The Deep', 'The Ice Castle','The Stowaway', 'The Legend of Ragnarok' and 'Underworld')
Defenders of Berk (TV show) 20 episodes(and the respective comic volumes: 'The Endless Night' and 'Snowmageddon')
Dawn of Dragon Racers (short)
Race to the Edge (6 seasons, 13 episodes each)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (movie)
Serpents Heir (comic)
Burning Midnight / Dragonvine (comic)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (movie)
How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (short)
Snoggletog Log (short)
(Rescue Riders) *seperate series*
Season 1 12 episodes
Season 2 14 episodes
Race for the Golden Dragon, Secrets of the Songwing, Huttsgalor Holiday (Rescue Rider shorts)
(The Nine Realms) *seperate series*
hope I could help
I am seriously considering following this order. Do keep in mind that it would be a first time viewing for me. I have never seen the any movie or show of the franchise but I hve heard great things and decided to give it a go in chronological order.
That said, I have a question since you have clearly researched this topic more than me: would you say watching all those film shorts and TV episodes in between movie 1 and 2 makes for a way more emotionally invested time when seeing the second movie for the first time? Because I heard nothing but good things about it even if I lack pretty much any spoilery details. So, I am wondering if watching and enjoying all the chronological build up to before getting to see the second movie for the first time would make an already amazing movie significantly better. Thoughts?
hey mate, sorry for not seeing your comment sooner! and amazing to hear yet another person viewing the series.
my thoughts are that it is definetely up to you, just noting that the vast majority of content is between the 1st and 2nd movies so you will have alot of time to invest into the characters (even though the movies do plenty well enough of this on their own) I personally think it is very worth watching (and reading) absolutely everything in order but I am personally quite passionate about it (hence this posts existance) whether or not that pertains to you is well... up to you
I would at least watch the shorts between the films and the series if you have the time, there are also many guides on which episodes are the main story facing ones out there if you would like just that aswell.
hope this helps
where can you watch these (not the main movies)
unfortunately this is a hard question to asnwer as it depends on your region, I personally own physical *and downloaded* copies, **IN MY REGION** Race to the Edge, some of the shorts and Rescue Riders are on Netflix, and the other shows land on either Hulu or Peacock which I believe to be the more "multi-regional" answer
Are the Riders/Defenders of Berk comics adaptations of their respective series or their own stories?
Sorry to be a late response, but they are stories that stand on their own, not just a comic-form of an episode per-say, they all take place in the time of their respective series'. they're all fun and I found them all quite interesting!
About 2yrs later to this, but this is what I shall be following as I wanted to rewatch the series.
so glad that this continues to be helpful to (although very few) people (: long after it was removed from being pined (new series announcement was far more important haha)
I plan on rewatching it all in full again sometime soon, it's been all too long (2 WHOLE years 🤯)
Awesome this helps alot :)
I'm very glad this was able to help out (:
It seems very confusing to me, someone help lol.
in chronological order it goes: HTTYD 1/ Riders of Berk/ Defenders of Berk/ Gift of the Night Fury/ Dawn of the Dragon Racers/ Race to the Edge/ HTTYD 2 / HTTYD 3/ HTTYD Homecoming/ The Nine Realms/
Rescue Riders doesn’t really fit in so that doesn’t count much. also Homecoming isn’t available in the East Cost and maybe some other areas but idk. i was unable to find Gift of the Night Fury anywhere. Finally, the only true canon parts are the three httyd movies and the others are just kind of for fun
Chronologically? First movie, then riders/defenders of berk (Amazon prime), then the shorts and race to the edge, and then the second and third. Both of the tv shows happen between the first and second movies
Everything but the riders/defenders show can be found on netflix
Thanks! I plan on watching all of it over the next week or so. So, I don't want to watch it in random order or it would probably ruin my experience for it XD
The tv shows do make for nice fillers between, since there’s a decent chunk of years between the first and second
But what about the books?
I don't have access to the books so hopefully there's not much missed information
Oh, they are nothing like the movies. Completely different story. I like both a lot. And the audiobooks were on YouTube. And David Tennant reads them!
if you are looking for a complete and comprehensive list of all the content within the series and its order, then do I have the list for you!
(everything is in chronological order here) if you have any questions feel free to ask me

this is brilliant. Thanks so much
ur very welcome (:
Please don’t include a link. Usually they are all not up to date and don’t include the recent films, shorts, and series. I’m not looking for books only animated screen adaptations. Thanks! I just want the chronological order not the release order. Thanks in advance!
It's like how Zealous said, but Legend of the Boneknapper and Book of Dragons could also take place during Riders/Defenders of Berk, as they come across and discover the dragons seen in the short. For example, they record Changewings into the manual in Gem of a Different Color, whereas they have detailed pages for it in the short.
1- how to train your dragon 2- legend of the Boneknapper dragon 3- book of dragons 4- gift of the night fury 5- riders of berk 6- defenders of berk 7- dawn of the dragon racers 8- race to the edge 9- how to train your dragon 2 10- how to train your dragon: the hidden world 11- homecoming
Dawn of the dragon racers is after edge as far as I’m aware ?
Nope, it's before. Remember when Astrid indirectly told Hiccup that the colour red really fit him? Well, guess what. In Dawn of the Dragon Racers Hiccup's undershirt was green, and afterwards he changed it to a red one in Race To The Edge!
Thanks! So that’s all the animated content for httyd? What about httyd legends shorts on Netflix? Is that the same thing as the boneknapper one?
That is the boneknapper and the book of dragons
I have only watched the movies and I believe a few shorts. I know the first How to train your Dragon goes first unsure afterward
How to Train your Dragon, Book of Dragons, Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon, Gift of the Night Fury, Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, Race to the Edge, Dawn of the Dragon Riders, How to Train your Dragon 2, The Hidden World, Homecoming, The Hidden World Epilogue, The Nine Realms

thank you for this, can you recommend a platform or website where i can watch all of these without hopping to another platform for the other series?
what about snoggletog log? does that matter?
Thanks! I'm gonna follow this order.
1st Movie
Then the show
2nd Movie
3rd Movie
Actually you could watch the show after 2nd Movie as it was made after the second movie but personally i think it would make more sense to watch it in the order of events instead of release order.
There are multiple shows tho?
Ah yes. Well the 1st is riders of berk, then defenders of berk and then Race to the edge.
I don't consider HTTYD nine realms a series to watch it's kinda bad
Everyone seems to be replying in chronological order instead of release order.. It's helpful if you want to understand when each part takes place, but isn't the "proper" way to watch it considering most fans would have watched it in release order as the series was still ongoing.
I wrote out this list for myself when I got into it:
*Snoggletog Log doesn't have much of a plot. It's a Yule Log TV special, so the program is essentially a fireplace with characters occasionally coming in and out of frame doing cute things. There are condensed versions that show all of the little events that happen in it without the empty runtime.
The first section of the series (Riders/Defenders of Berk) bridges part of the gap between HTTYD 1 and HTTYD 2. The second section (Race to the Edge) seeks to do the same, only Hiccup and the gang are older teenagers and it is a lot closer to the second movie timeline-wise.
Where can I watch all of these?
How to Train Your Dragon is the first entry in what became the multimedia franchise of the same name, which includes two more films—How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). A live-action remake is scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on June 13, 2025, with DeBlois returning to direct.
2008 : Kung Fu Panda
2010 : How to Train your Dragon
Two of the best animation films with a lot of heart
How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda 2 a year later showed that DreamWorks can awe and touch audiences the same way Pixar does.
This was one of the best animated films from DreamWorks and it still is. Okay, it's not quite the best from them since The Wild Robot exists now, but even so, there's no doubt that this is such a great film overall - and frankly, that live-action remake seems rather useless.
Love HTTYD 1 and 2.
I couldn't get into Wild Robot, bummed since half my friends loved it and the other half also felt whelmed.
Easily a top 5 DreamWorks movie! Still remember the day I saw this in theaters. Movie holds up real well too.
I’m going to say it: this is probably my favorite non-Disney computer animated film ever.
I remember not thinking highly of the trailers but my dad wanted to go. Then the reviews came out, and it really piqued my curiosity. Went to a last minute IMAX 3D showing (as in I got picked up and told “we’re going come with!”) and it was honest to God magic. Easily one of my favorite theatre experiences ever and one of the most worthy IMAX 3D presentations ever. It really spoke to me in a way very few films ever had, especially from non-Disney studios. I was really rooting for it to win Best Animated Feature but alas it didn’t. All these great films from DreamWorks later and I’d still consider this their best.
I still adore these films to this day. I rewatch the trilogy once a year, got a Toothless plush up above me as I type, and the section of Epic Universe I’m most looking forward to is Berk. I might cry meeting Toothless as these movies did have that impact on me, plus you know, Toothless.
Hello there. I am good fan of HTTYD universe, and I remember watching it as a quite young kid very well. Now however, that I am 19 years old, I wanna come back to it. See it all again and know how entire story in HTTYD goes. I found an blog/article about order in which movies and cartoon should be watched, to understand entire official canon story easily, however I want to ask, just to make sure.. Is the order listed here correct?
https://mapleleafmommy.com/fun/order-watch-dreamworks-dragons-how-to-train-your-dragon/
Yes the website is correct! Enjoy your HTTYD adventure!
Watch HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON online free. It is finally available for streaming. Enjoy it!
So if I watch it all like this I should get full story? Well okay then. Just a question though, since my main language is Polish... Would you or anyone else mind listing me titles order in my language? I guess I could have some trouble making sure I watch in proper order.
The website is wrong about 1 thing. HTTYD 2 is on netflix and also you'll love it if you watch the tv series and the movies. You might just be our new r/httyd regular redditor.
Currently rewatching
First movie / 3 shorts bonenapper, book of dragons, gift of night fury / season 1 riders of berk / Season 2 defender of berk / Short dawn of dragon racers / Season 3-8 race to the edge / Second movie / Third movie / Short sheep chronicles / Short dragon homecoming / Short snoggletog log /
I kinda live in Poland and I have a bit of an issue getting all series names correctly. Would you mind getting me a Polish list from somewhere? I hope that's not an issue. They just tend to change names of movies differently for different countries, same goes with cartoons
Hey!! Here's what I was able to find. Getting this list was kinda hard since my native language is spanish, but I hope I was able to get everything correctly!! I couldn't find the polish translation of the Snoggletog Log short unfortunately, but it's the last one on the list. Hopefully you'll be able to find it!
•Jak Wytresować Smoka •Prezent Nocnej Furii •Legenda o Smoku Gnatochrupie •Smoczy Podręcznik •Jeźdźcy Smoków •Jeźdźcy Smoków: Obrońcy Berk •Świt Jeźdźców Smoków •Jeźdźcy Smoków: Na końcu świata •Jak Wytresować Smoka 2 •Jak Wytresować Smoka 3 •Jak Wytresować Smoka: Święta w Domu
I’m sorry but where can I watch the shorts ? Is it just called bonenapper?
you can find that movie in full HD in Trailers(dot)TO
It was a hell of a ride on this journey with everyone, but it was a shame to have ended this way we all have split paths but, in the future, it shall be remembered.
Can anyone tell me the chronological watch order for httyd whole franchise? I've been getting confused on what is the right order
How To Train Your Dragon
Legend Of The Boneknapper
Gift Of The Night Fury
Book Of Dragons
Riders Of Berk
Defenders Of Berk
Dawn Of The Dragon Racers
Race To The Edge
HTTYD2
The Hidden World
Homecoming
Crazy how much effort was put in between movies 1 and 2. I feel like there was so much missed potential between 2 and 3.
Even before The Hidden World came out, the one year gap really bugged me. Not just because there's a lot less potential for filling in the gaps, but because it diluted a huge part of my emotional connection to these films.
The three films came out at three different times in my life. I was 10 years old when the first movie came out and 14 with the second one, and it really resonated when I saw that there'd also been a five year time skip in-universe. I loved this franchise and these characters, and it felt like they'd grown up with me (the fact that the spinoff shows filled in the gap only heightened this effect).
So then another five years passed and I was just starting college, and seeing bearded Hiccup in the first poster made me even more excited. But then it turned out that, while another five years passed for me IRL, The Hidden World picked up right after the second film and the time skip wasn't until the very end.
The separation at the end is fairly emotional, but if there'd actually been a time skip and it was the older, bearded Hiccup who let Toothless go, it'd have hurt me more than Toy Story 3 did.
1 and 2 are separated by 5 years.
2 and 3 are separated by like one year.
yeah the development between ice covered berk and the overpopulated berk was so missed out
Don’t forget the comic books that happened between movies 2 & 3
Where did the pinned post made by the mods go? It was saying the order.
Like, I at least know that the first season, Riders of Berk, comes after the first movie. But what about season 2, Defenders of Berk? And the Netflix Series? Does it come after the second movie?
I’d say “HTTYD1”, then the short “Gift of the Night fury”, then “dragon legends” which is the “book of dragons” and “legend of the boneknapper”, after that “riders of berk” then “defenders of berk” both a series, then “dawn of the dragon racers” another short, then “race to the edge” a series with 6seasons, then “HTTYD2” and then “HTTYD3” and finally another Christmas short “homecoming”
HTTYD 1.
Shorts : Gift of the Night fury, Legend of the Boneknapper, Book of Dragons.
Riders of berk.
Defenders of berk
How to train your dragon 2
Short: Dawn of the Dragon racers.
Race to the Edge
How to train your dragon 3
Short: HTTYD Homecoming.
This is the release order, and also the correct order to watch it in so that everything makes sense. The big one is Race to the Edge, which takes place before HTTYD 2, but references things that happen during HTTYD 2 a couple of times. You "need" to watch race to the edge knowing what happens during HTTYD 2.
Plus the bonus part is Race to the Edge is an excellent TV series in its own right, and it's my favorite part of the entire franchise.
First movie, riders of berk, defenders of berk, race to the edge, movie 2, movie 3. Gift of the night fury i think the Christmas special when hiccup is still young is in between movies 1 and race to the edge. And the most recent Christmas special is after movie 3
can someone tell me where i can watch these? since they arent on netflix other than RTTE and HTTYD. and on some of the piracy websites they also dont exist.
I can’t find season 1 of deferns of Berk it just says season 2. Is it kinda like split up from riders of berk?
Yeah s02 of riders of the berk is named defenders of the berk
christmas one happens right after movie 1. This is how they learnt about the mating thing
That's chronological order, but not the correct order
ive only seen the movies and the race to the edge but heres an order of what i watch 1st movie first then dragons race to the edge then 2 then 3 then at last httyd homecoming
I'd argue gotnf is before the series because they learn meatlug is female in the short and they all use she/her for meatlug in the series
Movie 1 Shorts Riders of Berk Race to the Edge Movie 2 Movie 3 Homecoming
If this does well I’m sure Megamind is next on the agenda for DreamWorks live-action remakes
Shrek is also guaranteed, but it may take until sometime in the 2030s after Shrek 5, the Donkey spinoff, and maybe a third Puss in Boots film.
Shrek could have an actually good live-action remake if it satirizes live-action remakes
The last animated one grossed $50M+ in China, but that was pre-COVID.
Hi there! Welcome to the fandom! So, I personally watched the three movies first and then the specials/tv shows because I wasn’t sure if I was going to bother with the shows (I’m personally glad I did though!).
However, if you’re looking to watch the movies/tv shows in chronological order, I believe that it’s in this order:
The three shorts between the first film and Riders of Berk, you could probably watch in any order to be honest - I don’t think it makes much of a difference.
Homecoming is set before the last five minutes of the Hidden World, but I’d recommend watching it after the Hidden World for obvious reasons!
There is also a thing called “Snoggletog Log” but it’s not really 100% canon - it’s literally just 28 minutes of a fireplace in the Haddock home, and the characters pop on screen from time to time to do some stuff.
I hope that helps, and I hope that you enjoy watching everything!
Thank you! This helped a lot. But where can I find these? I watched the first How to Train Your Dragon movie on Amazon Prime and Race to the Edge is on Netflix.
You’re not a true httyd fan unless you starred at a log for half an hour
Props to that guy who uploaded it onto YouTube with all the timestamps of when stuff actually happens in the comments.
I skipped the fire parts and only watched the action scenes. :)))
I did watch the log for half an hour
Just saying, some parts of the fandom are REALLY vocal against THW, but you should still watch it to make up your mind yourself.
