General Tips for Blush Application
Blush can be a transformative makeup tool, but its placement is crucial to complementing your face shape. A common mistake is applying blush on the apples of the cheeks while smiling, which can drag down the face when at rest [1:1]. Instead, consider sweeping blush along the cheekbones or using it as a contour to enhance your natural features
[1:4].
Round Face Shape
For individuals with round faces and chubby cheeks, applying blush directly on the apples of the cheeks might emphasize the roundness. Instead, try a high contour technique where you sweep the blush along the cheekbones towards the temples [1:4]. This method can create a more elongated appearance and add definition without overwhelming the face
[2:3].
Heart-Shaped Face
With heart-shaped faces, it's often recommended to apply blush lower on the face while still angling it upwards towards the temples [3:5]. Drawing a line from the top of the ear to the corner of the mouth can serve as a guide for placing blush just above this line
[3:2]. This approach helps balance the prominent cheekbones typical of heart-shaped faces.
Oval Face Shape
For oval faces, blush placement can vary widely depending on personal preference. A popular technique involves aligning the blush with the pupil and focusing on the apples of the cheeks [5:2]. Experimentation is key; trying different placements and taking photos can help determine what looks best
[5:5].
Additional Techniques and Recommendations
Some users recommend the "draping" technique, inspired by glam 80s looks, which uses blush to add definition in a more natural way than traditional contouring [1:10]. Highlighter can also be applied on top of the cheekbones, brow, nose, and chin to complement blush application
[4:1].
Ultimately, while there are general guidelines for blush placement based on face shape, personal experimentation and comfort should guide your approach. Trying out different methods and adjusting based on feedback or personal satisfaction will lead to the most flattering results.
Hi everyone, I JUST fell in-love with blush. Having acne for most of my life, I've always strayed away from blush because of fear that it might emphasize it so I just stuck with bronzer. I've been loving the peachy trend lately and wondered "Hmm... why don't I try applying blush?", and holy shit, what a game changer. Just a tiny bit makes me look alive (?) at work and I absolutely love putting it on my eyelids too.
There's just one problem. I'm not sure if I'm applying it right. I have a large face (prominent forehead and chubby cheeks). How do I apply blush with it? Sometimes I find that my blush application makes my face look a bit saggy, other times it looks good and other times it makes my cheeks look even bigger. Any advice?
I think we have a similar face shape! I have a round face and very chubby cheeks and I actually avoid putting it on the apples of my cheeks because it just makes them look bigger. Instead I do a kind of high contour with it, if you get me? I sweep it along rather than concentrating it in one spot on the face. It looks okay on me! Maybe you should experiment with different ways of application?
Round face, chubby cheeks here and this is EXACTLY what I do. Super sleek and very flattering. Makes me feel fancy.
I think we often fall for the " smile , and apply on apple of the cheeks " Advice we've heard over and over and over again as a general rule. But not all face shapes benefit from that- and I believe you are instinctually getting that - bravo !In fact , I see that works for certain faces and really really young people - I'm talking teens /barely 21 year olds.
More many of us - and me , just drags down the face when looking neutral and not grinning !!! Cheeks go Up and then back down when not smiling - so of course blush will end up lower on face by default.
Wayne Goss made a big deal but this - total game changer for me because I was sticking to Bronzer like you !!! I also notice most sophisticated ladies I see in the city swipe higher, with a lighter touch- just like Goss said !
I just watched his tutorial last night. Wayne Goss is the only MUA I trust on Youtube with his timeless tips. His videos about blush were short, helpful and straight to the point. Thank you!
Nice :) I want to ask before I link another Gem of a video for you- do you have a Long or Round shaped face?
Oh man I used to LOVE blush. Maybe the pinks and peaches just entice me.
It's all about the apples of your cheeks. Just get the color swept up. For a natural look don't take it too far. I'd say go at least where the tail of your eyebrow ends.
I mean don't connect it but width-wise on your face, at least sweep it that far.
For a natural look, I always smile and put it on the parts of my cheeks that are raised during that motion. Then I dip lightly with my brush and blend around. Dot some on my nose and then I’m done! :) It looks super natural this way.
I love to do the “draping” technique thats seen in a lot of glam 80s looks (but not as intense of course). I find that it gives my face more definition and looks more natural than straight up contouring with a neutral brown powder
In the pictures, I tried applying it on the apples of my cheeks reaching down to my lip corners because I don't think I looked good with it meeting just the half of my face/the bottom end of my nose level. Which is what I see some do. But I'd like to hear any advice. I'm not very skilled at this yet.
Omg you're so pretty 🥺 I love it on the apples of your cheeks, if you want you can bring it up further into your temples. I've been doing this lately and I think it's so cute
Came here to say similar!
Like another user said. Go upwards towards your temples and the cheekbones. Then blend out the ends so it's not so overwhelming for you.
You have really great bone structure, you could honestly get away with using your blush like contour, which I find to look quite pretty and natural
I think it looks good but you could apply it higher up where the bottom of your glasses are.
You have amazing skin!
That placement (staying above nose level) is just a generalized thing that's suggested to beginners, who often find blush easily overwhelms the rest of their makeup - or they smile when they put on blush, and that gets much lower when the face is at rest, which doesn't look right, for a lot of people.
One of the reasons for that rule, I think, is because having volume on the cheeks there is desirable - but you already HAVE that volume naturally, so if you didn't blend it downwards, it would maybe make your cheeks look too defined, and separate from the lower half of your face.
It also depends what kind of effect you want from your blush. If it's just to accentuate your existing face structure, then the way you're wearing it suits your face shape really well! ☺️ Some people look better with an area of more concentrated colour at some point, but you've used a wash of colour, which I think works perfectly. Go with what you think looks good, "rules" are only to get you started.
A lot of people use blush kind of high, and diagonally, and even over the temples these days, in the same places we're told to use highlighter - that gives the impression of sharper and higher cheekbones, which is trendy RN. It's not necessary to follow trends, though 🤷🏽♀️

It’s too high and too forward. Draw a line from the top of your ear to the corner of your mouth. Put the rouge just above that line going from the outside of your eye to the temple
Thank you I'll try this!
Honestly you face shape is short inverted triangle people with a heart shaped face have a widows peak
Ohh really? Ok thank you :) !
honestly i didn’t even notice you were wearing any in the pictures, you could be a bit more heavy handed with it. i would recommend the rare beauty liquid blush, it’s very pigmented and blends so well into foundation/concealer. also a little blush on the bridge of ur nose would be adorable!!!
I like it how you have it! Try moving it down lower but still angling it upwards if you want to switch it up
Thanks! I'll give this a try
Your face is round, I would bring the blush down & not so high up. Your cheekbones are high, so I would bring the blush down for that reason.
Blushing to your temples is your choice though. Do whatever for that
I don't have advice, just want to say I love your eyebrows and your fresh look.
Thank you! Hero cosmetic green corrector rescue balm, faux freckles, highlighter, tight waterline eyeliner, and more highlighter. All in that order
Is this a boy?
What a miserable thing to say.
I asked a question. If you took it as miserable that’s on you.
Apply highlighter on top of cheekbones. You can also apply on your brow, nose, and chin. Blush apply that on cheekbones too. First use the blush then highlight on cheekbones.
Try placing the blush aligned with your pupil on the apples of your cheeks
since you have an oval face shape (from what i see) i would search up on pinterest “blush placement for oval face shape.” i’m sorry if this doesn’t help. have a good day https://pin.it/4MUh2deRR
Ty! I never knew what my face shape was
I would experiment to see what you like, but maybe not so high on your cheekbones. Try a lower placement like on the apples of your cheeks.
Ty i was also expecting comments on that since I had doubts if it suited me or not.
I'd recommend looking at different placement options online, and just trying them out and taking photos. Scroll back and decide which one you like most! There are "recommended" areas for oval faces, but at the end of the day you should stick with whatever makes you feel the best. I think some experimenting is in order :)
“apples of the cheek” blush has always made my cheeks look like a doll, i put a small amount on and look terribly made-up. I tried temple blush, and it’s fine, but not really visible. Anyone else look horrible in blush?
Thanks for posting this! I always feel like blush makes my face look hollow. The graphic in the guide made me try applying the blush higher up and further back, and my face looks so much healthier!
Yay I’m glad it helped!!!
I need to put it higher up on my cheekbones to look good personally. 🤷 Not temples, not apples.
I have higher cheekbones but also chubby cheeks. I find I need to put it where people normally put their highlighter and bring it down to right under my eyes. I also bring my contour up a bit more so there’s not an awkward gap between contour and blush. I’d say just experiment one day and try different areas for blush following guides and see what you like best!
This is what I do! I don’t contour or use bronzer but when I place my blush higher up it works. I blend a cream in and set it with powder blush but I go very light on both so it’s looks natural while still giving my face shape
As I’ve gotten to be an old woman, I have a hard time adjusting where to place blush. My once oval face is now long and narrow with very defined high cheekbones . I wear curtain bangs, so temple placement is out and if I put it on the apples when smiling, it ends up dropping down almost to my mouth. I’m really stuck on this issue if you have any experience.
Definitely try putting blush lightly on the highest points of your cheek bones where people often put highlighter like others have suggested. I also have bangs!
I played with my face shape and found that for me applying it to the highest point of my cheekbones and just below there is best for me. I usually end up putting a little bit on the apples of my cheeks as well.
It might work for you!
Thanks for this advice! With a long face, I thought maybe I should put the blush lower to kind of cut the length of the face but I’ll try placing it on the highest point . I almost never use highlighter because on older women it highlights my wrinkles, lol.
Always apply blush on your resting face or you will get the fall . Keep your face neutral when you apply blush and highlighter as that is the most likely state of your life face most of the time. Same with all makeup. It's a great tip I got from both Wayne Goss and Robert Welch
I experience the same feelings for apples of the cheeks application.
So I've experimented with blush by applying it where I apply my contour. Sometimes for a deeper definition I apply contour first then lightly apply the blush over and slightly at the bottom of the apples of the cheeks. It takes some time to get the hang of where, just remember to move your face at different angles to see what looks better.
I like to put my blush where a lot of folks would put their highlighter. It adds color to your face without looking doll like and gives more of a lifted look
Hi all, it's my first ever post!
In the comment is a photo of my everyday makeup look (with messier brows than usual). It hasn't changed in a while, but I have. I am in my mid-30s and my face is here to tell the world. What I notice most is volume loss in my cheeks. I get hollows under my eyes and on my temples and it makes the apple of my cheeks more pronounced. All makeup tutorials say to place blush high on the cheekbone for a more lifted look, but when I do it, I feel like it looks so out of place.
Am I crazy to wear blush right on the apple of my cheek and even dust my nose with it? The placement feels like it fits my face best, and it's where I naturally flush, but I never see it anywhere in tutorials. Does it look strange?
Love this thread by the way. Y'all are beautifully supportive, and I appreciate the help.
Also PS: All other makeup tips are welcome! I haven't figured out how to cover up my new melasma spots or how to update my everyday eye look now that I have little corner folds forming. I love learning from all of you!
K. Thanks!
Being entirely genuine, if you said you were 23, I’d believe you. The blush looks super cute as is, it suits your face :-)
Thank you! Happy to know I wasn't imagining it. Mirrors are tricky things sometimes 😝
Here is the photo. Sorry I didn't have permission to add it to the post. First ever post and noob problem. How is everyone adding photos?
You look glowy and wonderful, I really think makeup is such a personal thing and not a paint by numbers situation. You certainly don't look hollow (I'm thinking that weird buccal fat removal trend), not on the cheeks or under your eyes. I wouldn't change a thing.
I love to play with my makeup and usually at night when I'm about to double cleanse, get my pj's on and turn in. I'll do a some new technique, or a smokey eye just for shits and giggles. I'll take it off 10 mins later but it's fun to experiment with those colours in the palette you never touch and if your eyeliner is wonky it doesn't matter. It's a good non intimidating way of trying new looks with no pressure.
This is such a good tip! I love it. Definitely going to try a few new looks this way. Thanks so much for the idea 💡
I'm in my mid 30s and prefer this placement too! Looks great!
Twins! Yay! I am not alone. I wonder why I haven't seen it anywhere? 🤔 Thanks so much!
High blush placement doesn’t look good on everyone, despite what people say. Put it where it works for you.
I think I have a short wide face, combination of square (chin) and round (upper and middle face).
Where do I place my blush??
For a short, wide face, placing blush slightly higher on the cheekbones and blending it upward toward the temples can help elongate your face. Avoid bringing it too close to the apples of your cheeks, as that can make your face look even rounder.
It sounds like your face is similar to mine. I've been liking it high and to the outside, like this image: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2130/2551/files/designfiles-tutorials-highres-facediagram-highprofile-blush_480x480.jpg?v=1632940196 (I hope it shows). High up on the cheekbones and temple. About as far away from the apples of my cheeks as possible.
Am i the only one who dislike the blush high on cheekbones towards the hairline trend? It is a very unnatural place to have pink shades, just looks weird imo
Agreed!! It doesn’t do any lifting, it just looks odd
Try applying blush in a diagonal sweep starting just above the outer apples of your cheeks and angling toward your hairline. This creates the illusion of more length and definition while keeping the center of your face looking open.
How and where on your face do you apply blush? I usually try and do it quite near the high points of my cheek bones cos I don't think it suits me on the apples of my cheeks, but I'm really bad at making it look good. When I apply it when I have contour and highlighter on my cheeks, I end up looking like neapolitan ice cream
I'm a newbie myself but I'm watching some of Wayne Goss on YouTube and I remember him making a video about this icecream look with highlight blush and contour or bronzer. For me personally I'm now experimenting with cream blush bronzer and highlight. I add darkest first and blend then go back and blend the edges with my foundation brush (residual foundation from my application when I started my face) and repeat with blush and highlight. Hope that helps and good luck!
Also I’d been applying blush all wrong apparently lol
I’d never heard of a Wayne Goss til your rec. I went down a YouTube rabbit hole for the better part of this morning and it was so good. Thanks!!
I really enjoy his tutorials as for the most part he keeps it real and keeps it simple. Glad you enjoyed!
I have just found it on YouTube thank you!

I have a roundish baby face with very full cheekbones. I try to avoid placing blush directly on the apples of my cheeks because it will further emphasize my facial roundness (unless I'm specifically aiming for an innocent, babydoll look). Instead, I place blush two finger widths from the side of my nose and blend upwards, for a light draping effect.
I do what I like to call the clown method. I use a heavy pigmented pink and blend in on the apples of my cheeks and then on my nose. I don’t feel normal without excessive blush
Hey blush buddie! Clown blush is my jam
ayeeeee a fellow aggressive blush userrr
The idea of starting at the hairline and blending inwards sounds so bizarre to me. Everything has always said to start on the cheeks and blend into the hairline. I’ve never seen anyone do it the opposite way.
I definitely start at the hairline. My rationale is that when using a pigmented powder I want to concentrate it where I want a more intense shadow (along my dark hairline), and blend it inwards towards where my contour tapers and lightens. I basically pull the powder inwards and blend it at the same time. I think it helps me define the shape I want for blush, highlight and contour.
Hmm I’ll have to try this technique!
What in the hey Arnold is a "pyramid" shaped face??
This guy comes to mind (kinda nsfw)
I fucking love dead by daylight
I would guess Eugene would be the closest...
Thank you so much for sharing this!!
I was gonna say! Where's the one to simulate that you have a perpetual cold?
