TL;DR
Avoiding Detection
Ghost Leviathans are less likely to attack if you avoid making noise and stay away from their spawn locations. Staying close to walls and the ground can help reduce encounters [2:1]
[2:3]. Using vehicles like the Cyclops with silent running mode can also minimize aggression
[3:2].
Maneuverability and Evasion
When using a Seamoth, it's possible to evade Ghost Leviathans by driving straight at them and then pulling up sharply to either side as they charge [3:4]. They generally cannot destroy your vehicle in one hit, so quick maneuvers can help you escape without significant damage
[3:5].
Using Sonar and Defense Systems
The sonar mod for the Seamoth is highly recommended as it allows you to detect leviathans from a distance, helping you avoid them [5:2]. The perimeter defense system can provide some protection, although its effectiveness may vary
[5:1]. Be mindful that sonar drains battery quickly, so carry extra power cells
[5:2].
Combat and Elimination
While some players opt to eliminate Ghost Leviathans using tools like the stasis rifle and thermal knife [3:1]
[5:6], others find that killing all leviathans removes a sense of purpose from the game
[5:4]. If you choose to engage, ensure you have adequate equipment and skills to handle the confrontation.
Alternative Strategies
If you're not ready to fight, consider relocating structures like scanner rooms to safer areas [5:5]. Additionally, utilizing mods that shock nearby wildlife can offer temporary protection while exploring
[5:7].
I’m not going to be specific due to potential spoilers but I just had to go to an area with a leviathan for some fragments and I didn’t want to risk my sea truck so I just went with my seaglide, rebreather and fully upgraded oxygen tank
I realized that where before with a Sea truck the leviathan would’ve been on me like a mosquito in summer it almost completely ignored me and even though this was at 300m it wasn’t that much of a hassle to get air
Tldr: without vehicles leviathan just leaves you alone for the most part
I’m sure this isn’t new but it’s new to me
I was playing yesterday and realized there’s a relatively easy way to dodge them with the truck (works with the sea glide too). I always forget about the controls to bring you closer to the surface, or further down. I’m on Xbox, so for me it’s the bumpers.
When I get too close and I know I’ll be attacked, I strafe either right or left, and then use the bumper controls to either drop down or raise above the leviathans.
They suck at turning and also don’t strike at angles very well. So if you can maneuver your truck around them like this, you can confuse them and dart away. I can usually do it in one try, distract them, move far enough away they don’t notice me anymore, and then I wait for them to pass.
I’ve come face to face with a leviathan every time I’ve gone into their biome this play through, but I haven’t been grabbed yet. My seatruck doesn’t have any speed upgrades, but only two modules so far.
That works when you are swimming around squarks too when they start to bark, just go straight up and they will miss you and often just give up for a small amount of time
I just stop driving/release the controls and stand in my truck. If I'm not at the wheel they don't attack.
I want to adventure out into the grand reef but I'm being ambushed by ghost leviathans. idk if I should get the cyclops first or just brave it with my seamoth that has the perimeter defense system, Hull upgrade and depth mk2.
bruh spoilers.
Stay close to walls and the ground should help
Just dont get close or make alot of noise also eventually youll know where they spawn and you can avoid those locations easily other than that theyre quite slow so easily dodgeable
I have putting decent hours into this gem of a game, however I am “stuck” not being able to go further down in the massive cave (known as lost river) due to the kind phantom leviathan…
So, how to deal with them? I try to avoid them as much as possible but in a tight space there seems to be no other way. How do you deal with them in general?
Thanks!
If you're using the cyclops then you can go for silent running when you come across them, but generally they can't do critical damage to your cyclops so I just normally wheeze past then at normal speed and they don't give me trouble much.
With a Seamoth or prawn it's much easier to navigate and evade them and generally it's not a problem at all with them. If you want to completely avoid them, just let them wander a bit away and just make a go for it. The ghosties on surface and the juveniles in LR never really give me a problem at all, they just like to wander and play <3 Not including the ones in the void though
My preferred entrance is the northern blood kelp because the opening is big enough to easily navigate the cyclops in and is somewhat near to my base than the mountains entrance. If you're using the seamoth or prawn, the blood kelp trench might be a easier entrance to go in instead.
Thank you for the details :)
I usually go in through the blood kelp trench so I only need to get past Casper, which is pretty easy cause he's not that bright. Het tends to get stuck in the skull down there
Cyclops - Stick by the edges of the cave and power off the engine the moment you get a creature attack warning. Be warned that it's a tough cave to navigate.
Seamoth - Just drive straight at the ghost leviathan, and as it charges toward you, pull up and either left or right. It will miss every attack.
Prawn Suit - Punch it in its stupid face.
They generally cant destroy your vehicles in one hit, assuming you drive past them and dont stick around where they patroll
Thank you
Okay honestly? I killed the most annoying ghost leviathans in the lost River. It took me a fair bit because I only had a thermal knife and stasis rifle, but the relief of never having to worry about them again is chef's kiss
I would highly recommend that method, gets rid of them for the whole game and builds up your skills and speed! Then you can focus on what really matters, be it exploring or gathering resources or dodging some freaking warpers
EDIT: also adding I'm a super scared newbie player but I knew I didn't want that shot of adrenaline and fear going into the cave every time, which is why I just decided to kill them. Took a lot of courage but I felt waaaaaaay better after, and a lot less scared of them too.
Adrenaline and fear sums it up pretty much :)
This leviathan followed me all the way to my base, thought it disappeared, I WAS VERY WRONG, what do i do
Fight it with your thermal blade like a real survivor.
There’s easier methods to take them down
Mike Tyson method
Now THATS an answer
lead it back to its home pacifist%
r/screenshotsarehard
My man!!! Like a real survivor!
well uh…
smack it around with the cyclops
Did you scan it you gotta scan it
Charge him property taxes, he takes up a lot of your space I imagine. 10 bladderfish per day he must bring you!
I put my scanner room in a REALLY bad spot in the Grand Reef when trying to set it up to search for one of the wrecks there and I’m currently being terrified by the adult Ghost leviathan on the east side I think
What do I need to know about them? Especially when inside a Seamoth?
I think that's a Juvenile, the adults are only in the dead zone. But probably the best way to deal with it would be to kill it. Best way is with a stasis rifle and a heat knife, at least that's how I did it
Ok let me rephrase
As someone without a Stasis Rifle, how do I avoid it until then? It attacked me near the seabed as I was pondering about putting a thermal reactor near a thermal vent down there
it’s really helpful to have the sonar mod for seamoth, it helps you see the leviathan from further away and that’s good for generally avoiding it. i used sonar mod and never had an issue avoiding them as long as i was careful. just be aware it drains battery a lot so bring plenty of backup power cells
You can get a mod for your seamoth that shocks nearby wildlife when it comes near, that's probbqky your best option for the moment
no juveniles are in the lost river and Adults are in the dead zone and the ones in the grand reef are, aswell as the northern blood kelp zone
It’s an adult. Juveniles live closer to their hatching ground, and migrate up and out as they grow. :)
Not juvenile, both the blood kelp ghost and the grand reef ghosts are adults.
Whatever you do I wouldn’t suggest killing it. I went through a play through and killed every leviathan and found myself having no purpose. Id personally just live with it. Ghosts have an AI quirk where once they ram into you once they become de-aggro’d and give you ample time to escape
I'd kill it (I'd use mods for this since I'm bad at fights) or cross everything and dismantle it so you can relocate your scanner.
I'm like 80% sure that the one in the grand reef is an adult and ghost leviathans are just a general pain in the ass because (at least in my experience) even the perimeter defense system doesn't do much to deter them. If you don't have a stasis rifle my best advice would be to try and keep your seamoth's health as high as you can so it can take a hit or two, have first aid kits and a repair tool on hand and ZOOM fixing it whenever you can, and gradually the hell out of dodge. The great thing about most of the fauna is that once it lands a hit on you it'll leave you alone for a bit, and with how quickly the seamoth repairs, it should be more than enough time to keep its health up and make your escape. It's definitely tedious but at least it gets the job done 😅 The sonar is also great for being able to see where the hell they are.
Update: got the stasis rifle and kill the son of a bitch
Yeah that works too lol, good job taking it down!
There is one near my base, very annoying.
My method, i like to call the rodeo method. Use a Prawn equipped with drill and grappling hook. Grapple on to the mofos face, and start drilling. You will take some damage, it was negligible for me. I rodeo'd a ghost from my base in the floating islands and left him in the shallows.
Where was your base?
I'm curious if it was an EDZ leviathan (likely not if you left him in shallows) or if the northern BKZ ghost leviathan lingers into the floating islands.
Does drill deal damage to them?
I don't think it will kill it that way, but it wont be anywhere near your base afterwards
Punching works, but a better method is this:

What you need:
1x stasis rifle.
Roughly 2/3s of your inventory full of the gas pod bombs that the gasopods release.

First, collect the pods before they explode by following the gasopod around and picking up 2-3 at a time before they explode. You can usually get enough in a minute or two if you are quick.
Second, find the ghost leviathan. When it charges you, hit it in the face with a quick charge from the stasis rifle. Then, charge up the rifle and hit it with a full strength shot. While it is immobilized, get right next to its head, open your inventory, and drop all of the gas pods before backing off quickly. You do NOT want to get caught in the cloud. The pods will explode, and the leviathan will be trapped in a cloud of poison. Stasis as necessary to keep it in the cloud until it is dead.
The reason this is a better solution, long term, is that once you get practiced with it, it is the most efficient leviathan extermination technique available. Plus, you are using the environment against itself, so extra fun and ::smug::. I carry 4 lockers of gas pods with me in my cyclops at all times to deal with anything that proves troublesome, moderately annoying, or looks at me even slightly funny.
Don't they just re-spawn?
I apreciate the devs making this game with no real guns and with the general mindset that avoiding these monsters should be more advantageous than attempting to kill them. It's nice that there's a game that's not a horror walking simulator that has monsters you want to avoid.
I apreciate humans' need to annihilate the living fuck out of anything that even looks at us wrong more, though.
Thanks for the tips. I'm gonna go annihilate the living fuck out of some ghost boys for smuggly suggesting that it might be possible they're stronger than me.
TIL you charge the stasis rifle.
I actually just managed to kill one that I think was a juvenile. I used my PRAWN suit to grapple onto it and then used the drill arm to drill into its head for several minutes til it died
You can just knife it to death, just make sure you are back a bit from the head or it bites
EDIT: And use a stasis rifle ofc
How? Think I've punched one a hundred times with the prawn suit.
Punch it more than 100 times. They have a lot of health, killing them isn't intended. Wiki might have exact figures.
I recently just beat Subnautica for the first time after having over 50 hours on it(I like doing creative) and when I decided to finally beat the game legitimately and go to the 500 meter plus Deep areas the ghost leviathan and the sea dragon leviathans were not scary just a huge pain in the ass. I get that some people may find it scary and that's fine but to me it's just like leave me alone you annoying creature, the sea dragon espically because he backhands my prawnsuit into next Friday when I'm about to go to the primary containment facility. The ghost leviathan just non stops attacks your cyclops which is why is just used a prawn suit mostly to beat the game. But yeah in my opinion they are more annoying than scary, but if your playing for the first time and have not seen any spoilers don't take my word for it. TLDR: leviathans are more of a pain in the ass than scary.
I think it's like this, the Reaper is perhaps the only Leviathan that is scary because it is the first Leviathan that the guys have contact with, and this contact is usually when the person is at the very beginning of the game, now Ghost and Sea Dragon are Leviathans that you only encounter in the End Game route, there you are already more advanced, enough to know how to deal with some creatures, by then you already have the Stasis Rifle, you already have the Seamoth Defense Module, you already have Prawn with upgrades and arms, so being scared is no longer possible, I already had a friend with thalassophobia who had more difficulties at the beginning of the game than at the end
I was exactly the same, Initially I was terrified to dive down anywhere below 100m. The worst was going down to the underwater base with the octopus things. Ugh.
I realize OP is talking about the others but can I just say that the Reaper scares me more than I think anything in any game, ever. I’ve never beaten Subnautica. I’ll play awhile then get sidetracked, come back and start all over. Every time I think, “Now I know how to play the game, I know about the Reaper leviathans, death isn’t even that punishing. I’ll be fine.”
But the second I see that huge form in the water and hear the roar I’m like, “Nope, nope, fucking NOPE!” and peace out lol. For context, I’m 38 and have played a LOT of games, but holy shit, Subnautica gets to me. It’s amazing.
I had a similar experience my first few attempts. Add in a great big helping of thalassophpbia, well..... nope. By the time I heard the roar, it was usually too late. I since had to learn to stick close to the terrain, get the sonar upgrades as soon as I could to keep sight of land in the dark... after that, I was able to beat the game 3 times.
Even with my fears, these 2 games (SN and BZ) are amongst my proudest completions, because of the fact that I pushed through and beat them, but I still go back because of the beauty and the atmosphere. I hope you have a similar experience, and may all your playthroughs be as Reaper free as possible!
I was just talking about the ghost and sea dragon, the reaper is still terrifying to me
Ghost leviathans are unsettling if you're out in the void. They're not nearly as scary if you're in the Lost River or if there's any light surrounding them, but something about them being in utter darkness makes them spooky. The sea dragon is a joke though. Its design is way too safe, and by the time you encounter it, you have all the tools you need to get away without it messing up your day too badly.
The reaper's design is just way too weird. The 4, all black eyes are very alien, the mandibles give it a spider-like feel that gives most people the heeby jeebies, and the sound design for its roar is top notch.
Oh in that case I agree with you. Ghost leviathans are eerie, but don’t instill the terror a reaper does. Sea Dragon is just dangerous.
yeh. It's more of an exploration game. the devs were shocked when people got spooked by the reefbacks in the prolonged) early access and just leaned into it. But SCUBA and mystery are really where the meat is.
100% agree. Other than the reapers, it’s totally possible to just keep punching things in the face with the prawn suit. They will swim away.
Is that really so strange? People are scared of different things - there are a lot of us who don't see Subnautica as a horror game.
I think the reapers are scarier because they hang out in an open ocean, and there are multiple of them. It's like, can I escape safely this way? I dont know!
Ghosts there are very few, and they only appear in a few places.
I recently completed my first playthrough and I never encountered one near the aurora. My first encounter was near the main island, and seemed pretty easy to avoid on a seamoth
Although the Sn2 discord chat has made it clear that the dev team won’t be making leviathans killable, I still believe that it would be a great idea for leviathans to be killed by other leviathan species as well as leviathans within the same species. This would not only create tight situations where you’re caught in between two leviathans fighting for territory, but also a new way to deal with leviathans, being that you could lure a larger leviathan to the smaller leviathan you want to be delt with, and the smaller would be killed and never bother you in that area again. This strategy can be seen in Ark (which I know is much different than Subnautica in a myriad of ways), but would still be pretty applicable to Subnautica in my opinion if allowed.
Some people may say that this makes dealing with leviathans “too easy” and “not a realistic feature in a survival game” if you can just lure an apex leviathan to a smaller one, however I believe that the process of “luring” the leviathan would still be a high risk situation (as the larger leviathan could easily eat you or simply replace the leviathan in the area you want leviathan free), is still very applicable to a survival game. For instance, luring sea dragon to kill a reaper leviathan, the reaper leviathan would be delt with but you still have the risk of the sea dragon prowling around.
Imagine the situation on our world: There’s a shark that keeps on stopping you from exploring this sunken shipwreck that you need to go to. So, you lure a killer whale over (which could also kill you) to deal with the shark. The shark is killed by the killer whale, so you’re able to loot the wreck while the killer whale is feeding on the shark remains, and then stealthily leave the area.
Although the luring mechanic may be a bit too “off the deep end” for Sn2, i believe that the ability to encounter leviathan fights would be a quite cool feature.
They're making the leviathans indestructible?
I dont like to actively get rid of them but damn that's kinda odd
I get why, but I still want some kind of temporary solution or deterrent for them, rather not have a constant looming threat of just sitting and waiting to be eaten
The idea of using a leviathan to distract a leviathan has a lot of cool potential
I think a mechanic like this would be awesome for injuring or distracting leviathans, but tbh I agree with the devs on not killing them.
From what we've seen it looks like there's a squid type leviathan that can grab small fast vehicles and stuff, so being able to lure a leviathan over to distract it would be super fun.
I would honestly love an area overrun with a jellyfish swarm like a cave entrance you have to lure a creature to to get access
I always wanted to see a Sea Dragon come up and take a Reaper. To see parts of the ecosystem in action.
Like a shark with a seal. As an introduction seeing that stuff would be neat to watch. We see the Reapers take the various smaller organisms out there but a scripted “reaper hunt” involving a sea Dragon would be neat to watch.
i absolutely dont disagree. this kinda stuff gets the team really excited. hopefully we can impress in a future EA release. ty for your thoughts!
Specifically the one in the Lost River. I have my base far enough away from him that he doesn't bother me, but unless I need to get some resources out there or go through there with the Cyclops, he's kind of a pain (not to mention terrifying but I have a sort of PTSD reason to be scared of ghost leviathans due to an unexpected encounter when first playing this game some time ago) and I'd like him to be gone forever. So what's the best strategy? And more importantly, will he respawn or be replaced by another?
DONT KILL MY GHOSTIES!!! WHAT DID THEY EVER DO TO YOU!
Edit:I have the exact same problem that you have and all I do is say "Hi Ghostie. How are you? Insert random comment about how they might be doing Okay, bye Ghostie!" Then I get out repair and continue. I also went into the void by accident and almost died. Terrifying
Nearly destroyed my Cyclops, twice, and scared the hell outta me when I went too far into open water in earlier gameplay Oh and also came after me once while looking for Seatreader's Path, while being terrorized by a Warper.
They all deserve to die.
I have befriended them. Dont ask how, just believe. I will just go and say hi, they will give me one bite to say hi back, then we will go our separate ways.
Treading too far from the central area (off the edge of the volcanic zone the game is centralized on) will cause them to spawn. Other than that, there are 2 (3?) known specific locations they reside... you can get by them with the cyclops by simply running with the lowest engine speed in silent mode and sticking close to the wall... they pose no risk if done that way afair
One of them punted my cyclops about 100m out of the water
Well, you can kill it by using the statis rifle to paralize it and then hit it with a knife, do this process intensively until it is dead. What i do not know is if it'll despawn or spawn another, because i didn't really tried it. Hope it helps
They are pretty easy to kill with a prawn suit. They won't respawn.
This is how I learned to deal with most of the lifeforms. Prawn suit with the grapple arm, and just punching them to death.
I found killing them to be kind of a chore, if you feel like me(and dont have it yet) try to get the shield mod for the Cyclops, you just need to activate it when they are starting to chase you and sort of forget about them.
prawn with grapple arm or stasis rifle and thermoblade
Second playthrough and I decided to build my base in the grand reef so I can see the ghost leviathan until he decided to just disappear
I've moved into the edge of the mushroom forest near the dunes to get a great view of 2 reapers
Super annoying when that happens.
The Warper ITMT
Sounds like you were a bad neighbor and drove him away.
Considering I went to the area with a cyclops at normal speed, yeah I can see why it would be annoyed as well
How to avoid ghost leviathans in subnautica
Here are some key considerations for avoiding Ghost Leviathans in Subnautica:
Know Their Locations: Ghost Leviathans are primarily found in the following areas:
Stay Quiet: Ghost Leviathans are sensitive to sound. Move slowly and avoid using loud vehicles like the Cyclops when in their territory.
Use Stealth: If you're in a Seamoth, consider using the sonar feature to detect nearby threats without making noise.
Avoid Direct Eye Contact: If you see a Ghost Leviathan, try to avoid looking directly at it. They can become aggressive if they feel threatened.
Use the Environment: If you encounter a Ghost Leviathan, use the terrain to your advantage. Swim into caves or tight spaces where they cannot follow.
Upgrade Your Equipment: Equip your Seamoth with upgrades like the Perimeter Defense System to deter attacks if you find yourself in a dangerous situation.
Plan Your Routes: When exploring areas known for Ghost Leviathans, plan your routes carefully to minimize encounters.
Recommendation: Always keep an eye on your surroundings and be prepared to make a quick escape if you spot a Ghost Leviathan. Having a well-stocked emergency kit with health packs and food can also help you survive encounters.
