How to Avoid Peeling Paint from LED Light Strips

Use Alternative Mounting Methods

One effective way to prevent LED light strips from peeling paint is by using alternative mounting methods such as aluminum channels or casings. These channels can hold the LED strips securely without directly adhering them to the wall, allowing easy removal without damaging the paint [1:1][5:1].

Command Strips and Non-Damaging Tape

Another option is to use Command Strips or non-damaging tape to mount your LED strips. These products are designed to be removable without causing damage to walls, making them a safer choice compared to the standard adhesive backing that comes with most LED strips [1:3][1:6]. It's advisable to look for descriptions of non-damaging tape when purchasing LED strips [2:2].

Heat and Solvents for Safe Removal

If you need to remove LED strips that have already been mounted with strong adhesive, using heat or solvents can help minimize damage. A hairdryer or heat gun can soften the adhesive, making it easier to peel off [1:4]. Additionally, applying Goo Gone or rubbing alcohol can loosen the adhesive, allowing you to gently scrape off the strip with a metal scraper or knife [3:1][3:4]. Always test these solvents on a small area first to ensure they don't react negatively with the paint.

Repairing Damaged Walls

In cases where paint has already been peeled off, repairing the wall involves several steps. Use a flexible putty knife to remove any remaining adhesive, sand the area smooth, and spot prime with oil-based primer over residual glue. Follow this with a light skim coat of mud, sand again, re-prime, and apply a top coat to restore the wall's appearance [4:1].

Considerations Beyond Discussions

While these methods are recommended by users, it's also important to consider the type of paint and surface you're working with. Some paints may be more prone to damage than others, so testing on a small area before full application can prevent larger issues. Additionally, if aesthetics are a concern during daylight hours, painting over the strips themselves (while avoiding the lights) or choosing strips with colors that blend better with your decor might be worth considering [5:2].

I see a lot of complaints from people saying that when they take off the paint it rips off the paint from the wall.

the sticky is extremely strong and will rip the paint too. i put my LED strips in aluminum channels as seen here. then you can remove the LED any time you want without damaging anything else

Thanks. Could I use a hairdryer to pull it off?

Also is there a difference between a LED strips with 150 Number of Light Source vs 600 or is that just a markating thing?

A heat gun, or possibly a razor scraper blade would be my first attempt. I've only removed a strip from aluminum, so just pealed it off.

150 vs 600 is the LED count. More LEDs = brighter light.

Perhaps you can use Command Strips? Then you can more easily remove the adhesive without damaging the wall.

Depends on the kind you get I guess, I'd suggest looking for some description of non-damaging tape to secure them.

I don't plan on removing my lights ever so I use stronger double sided tape instead, because no matter what you get the adhesive backing is weak

The tape to apply them might. It is not a big deal since you can repaint the wall.

Depends on the adhesive used. Have you tried Goo Gone?

3 upvotes on reddit
Baby_from_da_6 · OP · 4 years ago

It’s just the basic adhesive that comes glued to the strip lights in advance. Would I use goo gone to just get underneath the lights and pry it off?

1 upvotes on reddit
I
I_am_Rubber · 4 years ago

I would just drip some over the top of the adhesive strip and let it sit for a while. Then use a metal scraper or knife to wedge under the strip to scrape it off. Depending on how big the strip is, you would add more goo gone as you go so it can work its way through the entire strip.

If the paint isn't water soluble you could use rubbing alcohol and you slowly peel it away. Although before you do this, do a small test on the wall to make sure no reaction happens.
And be careful with inhaling too much if you do this, you might get dizzy if you inhale it for a long time

tips for painting over LED strips without painting the light?

Posted by AggravatingTear4919 · in r/DIY · 2 months ago

I have LED stips all over my living room and kitchen. They look gorgeous at night but during the day they can be a bit of an eye sore. I was heavily considering painting over the strips and whatever theyre on to both glue them down more and kinda hide them for most of the time. Would the paint interrupt the electricity? And have any tips to keep each induvial light clean? Idk if it be safe to put painters tape over them i dont want to tear one off.

I have led light strips that go across my room about 100ft what can I use that will keep them from sticking like how they originally come with the back. Is there a certain thing they don't stick to well that I can use to move them with when you pull them off the wall the strip is still super sticky and I want to use them when I move because they are a good brand and a bit pricey. I don't want to have to buy new ones since there not even a year old. Thanks in advance!! New user pass phrase: Thank you for your answers

To move your LED strips, try wrapping the adhesive side with painter’s tape or wax paper to protect it. You can also use a hairdryer to gently heat the adhesive if it’s tough to remove. This will help preserve their stickiness for reusing in your new place!

Good luck with the move!

How would I get the tape off the back of the light strips tho?

1 upvotes on reddit
No_Evening8416 · 5 months ago

I have a lot of experience with LED light strips, but I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.

Are you asking how to:

  1. Safely remove the strips without damaging the paint?
  2. How to store the strips so the sticky side doesn't become a mess?
  3. How to re-use the sticky side after your move?
  1. Very carefully, and you might not be successful depending on the stickiness/paint quality combo. Use a putty knife and pull verrrryy slowly. Be prepared to touch up with a little patch paint just in case.

  2. I would use strips of paper, plastic, or electrical tape to safely cover the sticky. Then re-spool the lights (buy or make a spool if necessary) to keep them from tangling in the move.

  3. Don't. In my experience, the built-in sticky is one-use. Fortunately, you can use little strips of mounting tape to reinstall your lights somewhere new (I've moved with mine several times) and mounting tape is also more reliable in not damaging the paint in your next place. :)

Instead, cover the old sticky with something permanent like paper and then use mounting tape in the new place.

I want to take them off my walls to reuse them but I don’t want them to get stuck together when I move I was trying to see if someone maybe know something I could use to separate the strips like that backing does when you first purchase it.

Maybe covering the sticky part with plastic wrap would work. You'd probably want to test a small area first.

Wax paper not parchment. You could use two sided tape if its not sticky enough or my absolute favorite... a few dabs of hot glue.

The waxy non stick paper you put biscuits on when baking them. They should peel back off, but I would try sticking a corner onto some to see if it peels again

Actually...looking closer...if you are not doing a repaint...just sand those few minor places and repaint and touch-up that small area...it's pretty minor....

Typically I have to remove the shader if it doesn't have screws, get a new one if the first shader is damaged, then apply black gasket maker to the void in between the pixels. Then press the shader in evenly, wipe away the excess, place the mod pixel side down on a flat surface with some kind of weight. Unfortunately, it's not always the fastest, but it works.

If it’s Absen, I always just bang them back in to place with a soft part of my hand. Or like my thumb sliding it back into place. Some models have little screws that hold them in place as well so you could check if it’s missing those tiny screws.

I’ve worked with roe carbons on tour. You’re just going to have to replace the shader. It will get worse if you don’t.

Sometimes you can replace the shader itself (brand dependent)

This is the answer. Shaders are basically stickers with holes in them and these stickers are failing. You should have a supply of spares for any install

Email hugo@roevisual.us he covers parts. Let him know the PO# on the back of the panel and he'll find the matching shaders for you

If your close the shop you can ask for the replacement shader for carbon panels. They come on sheet with the adhesive already applied. Just peel the old one off and replace with the new one. Just make sure it’s in the same orientation. (There is a lip normally on the bottom)

No problems. I often tour this style wall and always ask for 1-200 of them as they are the first thing to go and easy to fix without a replacing the entire module. Just be delicate peeling it off as to not remove any pixels either it.

Help! LED Lights stripping off the wall

Hey! I need help. I don’t really know what these walls are made of but my LED wall lights are stripping the paint / cardboard? Off the wall.

It’s weird because it’s not just paint, it seems to be like multiple layers of cardboard.

My question is how expensive will this be to fix?

Drywall is basically a gypsum core with paper on both sides to sandwich it for strength. Peeling a bit of it is okay, but peeling a lot of it is not a good idea.

What you need to do is get a small container of joint compound and a six inch putty knife. You will first use the putty knife to remove all loose stuff, being careful not to damage more. Then use the joint compound to resurface and feather (youtube!!!). Once that sets you will sand and resurface again with the joint compound. (oh, get a good N95 mask for this) Once you have a nice smooth surface you will wait 24 hours and then use a drywall primer. Then you will repaint the whole face of that wall with the closest match you can find unless you have exactly that paint in a can somewhere in which case you can just touch up, feathering again to blend old and new.

Okay serious question: Why does my LED strip light up when peeling it off?

(Sorry for the potato quality, the effect is pretty faint so I had to shoot in a dark room for the camera to capture it.)

I'm currently moving and noticed this while removing some old led strips. They're not connected to any power source, it's just this short bit you see here.

My guess is that it's some sort of piezo-electricity? I don't know if leds are prone to that or not though.

(Not sure if this might be more of a Steve-Mould-Question honestly.)

Not static discharge in air - I think there's enough capacitance between the strip, adhesive, and the rug/wall that when you move it, enough voltage is briefly induced in the wire that a few electrons hop over the LEDs and illuminate them.

How to avoid peeling paint from LED light strips

Key Considerations to Avoid Peeling Paint from LED Light Strips:

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust or grease before applying the LED light strips. Use a mild cleaner and allow it to dry completely.

  2. Use Quality Adhesive: Opt for LED strips with high-quality adhesive backing. Some strips come with stronger adhesives designed for various surfaces.

  3. Temperature Control: Avoid installing LED strips in areas with extreme temperatures or humidity, as this can weaken the adhesive and cause peeling.

  4. Proper Installation: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Press the strips firmly onto the surface and hold for a few seconds to ensure a good bond.

  5. Avoid Direct Contact with Paint: If possible, install the LED strips on a surface that is not painted or use a mounting channel to keep the adhesive away from the paint.

  6. Test a Small Area: Before full installation, test the adhesive on a small, inconspicuous area to see how it interacts with the paint.

Recommendation: If you're concerned about damaging the paint, consider using mounting clips or channels for the LED strips. This method allows you to avoid direct contact with the paint and provides a more secure installation, reducing the risk of peeling. Additionally, if you need to remove the strips later, it will be easier and less likely to damage the surface.
