Alternative Adhesives
Several users have suggested alternatives to traditional adhesive tapes that might damage walls. Mounting putty is recommended as a safer option compared to command strips, which can still peel off paint [1:1]. Some users have had success with 3M Command products, but caution is advised when removing them to avoid damage
[2:4],
[4:6]. Nano tape is mentioned as another option, though it may be less reliable on matte surfaces
[3:2].
Non-Adhesive Methods
For those looking to avoid adhesives altogether, there are several creative solutions. Using pin brads or small nails near the ceiling can support lights without noticeable damage, as the holes can be easily filled with spackle [2:2]. Another approach is mounting the LED strips onto wooden boards painted to match the wall color, reducing direct contact with the wall
[3:1].
Temporary Solutions
If you're concerned about long-term damage, consider temporary solutions like using twist ties attached to thumbtacks or nails [4:5]. This method allows for easy removal and repositioning without leaving adhesive residue. Additionally, silicone caulk can be used for a more permanent installation that doesn’t damage paint
[4:4].
Consult Landlord
Before installing LED strips, it's advisable to consult with your landlord. Many landlords repaint between tenants and may not mind minor superficial damage [2:3]. If repainting is required upon moving out, you can plan accordingly.
Product Recommendations
For specific product recommendations, users have pointed to 3M mini clips for hanging lights discreetly [2:1], and Velcro strips as an alternative
[4:8]. These products offer varying degrees of hold and ease of removal, so choose based on your specific needs and wall conditions.
My boyfriend has really been wanting LED lights for his room at his apartment (he's at Babcock if this matters) and I got him some for Christmas. Only thing I'm stuck on is the installation. I had LEDs in my bedroom but when I moved and took them down, the paint peeled off with it. I'm not sure how much trouble he'll get in if the paint peels when he takes the LEDs down, so I've been trying to find out what other students are doing with their LEDs to see if that helps me at all. Any advice?
Have you tried command strips? Also if the paint chips I would recommend buy some paint to cover it up. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy. But that’s what I did for and old apartment and they didn’t notice so i thought it was worth mentioning
I didn't think about command strips! Thank you so much!
DONT USE COMMAND STRIPS!! they WILL STILL TAKE OFF PAINT!!! Instead use mounting putty!!! i use it and my lights do not budge at allll
Ooo I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
Looking for some ideas to hang my strip lights in my apartment without damage specifically no adhesive to avoid chipping/peeling paint, any ideas, I’m trying to find a way to do this for under 25$ my thought was to use painters tape on the wall, and just stick the light strips to the painters tape… I’m not sure
I'd go out and find some pin brads, 23 gauge or so, and tap them in way up near the ceiling then hang the lights from them. Only use a few to support the lights. When you move, the holes are so small that they can be filled with spackle and no one will ever see them. That said, if the landlord ever comes in to fix something, well, busted.
Painters tape will peel the paint if left on long enough (maybe around 1 year).
Easiest thing to do is to talk to your landlord and ask if you can do this.. Most landlords paint an apartment inbetween tenants... if your landlord does that, then they may not care about superficial damage to the paint.
If they tell you that you'll have to repaint the apartment, then just don't bother messing with the walls.
I have had good luck with 3m command strips with hooks on them. I just don't like putting holes in walls. 😉
At my last house, we had some pictures on the walls for 5+ years. If I rushed when removing them, then I damaged the paint, but if I took my time, they came off with little to no damage.
Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
This is the way. ☝️
The 3M mini clips in particular are great for indoor led / fairy lights. Easier and less stressful than pulling off the foam tape of larger 3M hooks.

Masking tape will bond over time to suraface and cause issues.
3M Command strips, best removable tape there is, at a cost.,test inconspicuous area etc..
Nano tape, cheaper, good on glass and glossy surfaces, bit more hit and miss removal on matt and paper finishes.

You could mount them to long wooden boards painted to match your wall color. Then you could attach them at three points for reduced damage.
My LED lights never stick to my walls and I just destroyed a string of lights from using thumb tacks ... anyone know a good discrete safe way to get the lights to stick to my walls thanks!!
Command hooks by 3M
Yes with the Velcro!
Double-sided SUPER sticky foam tabs maybe? I know you said no thumb tacks, but did you try simply placing push pins above and below the strip to hold it in place?
That didn’t work with the ones I just broke probably cuz they were outdoor ones so they were super thick. Will try this with the other strips I get. They’ll most likely be thinner (:
Twist ties to nails or thumb tacks have done the trick for me before!
Silicone caulk clear
Anything from 3M's Command product line that fits your needs will work wonders. Holds great and leaves no residue.
I’m bouta get led lights for my room around the ceiling and I’m scared it might peel the paint off. I know about the hair dryer trick but I’m just wondering if it pulls your paint off
The tape to apply them might. It is not a big deal since you can repaint the wall.
The tape might not stick well and I don’t wanna damage my wall
If it does not stick well, it will not damage the walls.
Depends on the kind you get I guess, I'd suggest looking for some description of non-damaging tape to secure them.
I don't plan on removing my lights ever so I use stronger double sided tape instead, because no matter what you get the adhesive backing is weak
I hav

Buy an aluminum channel and mount it upside down so it fully covers the old strip. Mount new strip to the (bottom of) new channel.
Recently I’ve went to put up the “onn” led light strips on my textured walls and realized when I woke up the next morning it didn’t stick. I had leftover command strips and put them on the corners of the lights to keep them from falling. It’s worked perfectly all day long. Should I be concerned of a fire hazard? Also I didn’t want to put the tiny nails and plastic pieces into my wall because I’m renting. I’m assuming it’s okay but you never know. 🤷♀️
Do your LED light strips feel too hot to touch after being on all day? I don't really see how any LED light strip brands I'm familiar with could be a fire hazard, they don't' get that hot. If you can touch it, it's definitely not going to start a fire.
Try giving the command strips more time to "set" after sticking them on the wall, and before hanging your lights on them. I've found in my experience, that they stay up better if you let the glue "set" to a textured wall before loading the command strip.
If the command strips just don't work for you, I am pleased to inform you that patching and painting nail holes is actually super easy, and takes about 2 minutes, so if you decide to use nails to mount them, it's not a big deal, as long as you have a can of the correct color of paint lying around somewhere in the house. (most places I've rented from did have buckets or cans of the default wall paint somewhere in the building).
Although I tried using Command adhesive hooks for Christmas lights once. They pulled off a little chunk of paint from the wall when removed.
Lots of great info thank you! They definitely haven’t gotten hot. This is my first time having leds so I sorta assumed they did conduct heat. Also you’re definitely right I should have waited a bit but I’ve already stuck them on there, I think it will hold great it’s already held for 6 hours today so far!
You should be fine. My LED’s don’t get that hot and I’ve had no issues so far
Yeah I think as long as I have better than shit quality leds I should be fine, they haven’t gotten hot at all. This is my first time having leds so I was just a bit curious. Thank you!
Shit,, white toothpaste will work for those holes should you need any. No one will know if you paint the toothpaste

When I first moved into my house, I put up LED light strips on the walls and I’m redecorating my room and I took them off and the paint chipped. Do I need to do anything before painting over this?
Yes...you do. Scrape any dried paint off and then sand it and mud over it and sand and smooth out. Prime and paint. My son did the same thing in his room.
Actually...looking closer...if you are not doing a repaint...just sand those few minor places and repaint and touch-up that small area...it's pretty minor....
It’s tough to try to fill shallow holes . Maybe sand to attempt at evening out the surface , may just chip More. Little you can do.
Nah.
Nah, use a delicate tape if you’re not painting the white wall too
I’m living in the courtyards and I put up a power strip using command strips. I used weak ones, so it fell, but there was paint on the back of the adhesives so I’m not sure what to do for my lights. I currently have command hooks, like the ones where the back is sticky and I can hook the lights
I fucked up so many walls with strips over the years and eventually said “fuck it” and got lamps and just swapped to Smart Bulbs.
Not exactly a solution to the issue of hanging string lights but an alternative I ended up finding to be pretty solid
