How to Avoid the Sea Dragon Leviathan in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Use Cyclops stealth and shields.
  • Grapple past with Prawn Suit.
  • Keep moving and stay low.

Using the Cyclops

The Cyclops is a popular choice for navigating areas inhabited by the Sea Dragon Leviathan. When using the Cyclops, it's recommended to cut the engine when you spot the leviathan on your radar to avoid detection [1:2]. If the Sea Dragon becomes aggressive, activating the shield generator can help protect your vessel [3:3]. The thermal charger is highly recommended as it makes you nearly invincible in the lava zone [1:2].

Prawn Suit Maneuvers

For those using the Prawn Suit, grappling past the Sea Dragon is an effective strategy. Many players report successfully bypassing the leviathan without being attacked [1:4][3:2]. Staying close to the bottom of the ocean floor can also minimize encounters [3:8]. It's advised to carry a repair tool in case of damage [1:2].

General Avoidance Techniques

Regardless of your vehicle, maintaining a wide berth from the Sea Dragon is crucial. If you see or hear it, move in the opposite direction quickly, as most creatures de-aggro when you run away [1:5][2:1]. The Sea Dragon is relatively slow, so consistent movement can help you evade it [1:6].

Additional Tips

Some players suggest using distractions or luring other creatures to deal with leviathans, although this mechanic isn't officially supported [5:1]. While killing leviathans isn't possible, understanding their behavior and using the environment creatively can aid in avoiding them [5:4].

I'm going into the lava zone, and I'm looking for advice on how to deal with sea dragons. Thanks in advance.

If in Cyclops, cut the engine when you see it on your radar. Start back up when it leaves. If it becomes aggro hit the shields. It's highly recommended to have the thermal charger. You're pretty invincible with it down there since the lava lakes and lower sections are hot.

If in Prawn, you might get snacked on a few times. Try to avoid it but bring a repair gun just in case.

There isn't much to it. Basically, if in Cyclops be on the defense and stealth side. If in Prawn navigate around it but be prepared to take some hits.

Avoid it if you use the cyclops and if you only use a prawn the sea dragon is pretty harmless to you but you should watch out for warpers if they tp you in the wrong moment the sea dragon might 1 shot you

If you see it, stay away from it, if you hear it, go the other way, if it sees you, haul ass away from it. Most simplified way to not have to deal with them.

If you're in a cyclops you can ignore it. If you get annoyed with it attacking you just cut the engines for a minute and let it wander off. Takes forever for a sea dragon to destroy a cyclops.

If you're in a prawn you can mostly ignore it, just be mindful of crevices you can use to get away from it, assuming it doesn't decide to clip through and get you anyway. Or if your cyclops is nearby just go dock in that. Grapple helps a lot.

If you're in neither, you better have access to a stasis rifle or a crevice.

But you're going to find that they're extremely dumb and not worth worrying about.

Even if he comes close, you can just zip away in the other direction. Most creatures de-aggro quickly when you just run

Design Hot Take: I would have crapped my pants if the shadow leviathan had...

Posted by GrowthOk5786 · in r/Subnautica_Below_Zero · 7 months ago

... MORE LEGS!!!

I couldn't find a post on this so I am just starting here. I am also not an animator and can only imagine the expensive-ness. But damn that design is SO WORTH IT to me!!

Intro:
I have been thinking for a while about the design of the shadow leviathan, and the nature of Subnautica Zero, and why I was considering the Shadow Leviathan as a nuisance - after all, all I actually needed was a perimeter defense system to get rid of one biting my seatruck.

In many many previous YouTube videos BZ has been critcized, compared etc. I actually really liked the tightness of several places, as they gave so little space to hide - it played more to the idea of claustrophobic corners one couldn't escape.

Problem? I think that the Shadow Leviathan indeed doesn't fit that space - it gives the vibes of reapers and ghost leviathans, which are big beasts that rely on on their bodily sway to move forward.

https://preview.redd.it/0bp7otte4dle1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=765f52a248f94c6e4b63465b58c6eb98f702e376

In my eyes, if you are in a cave, moving through legs is an evolutionarily logical step, and this can be seen by the shadow leviathan - but why did it undevelop in it's regions? What if it had legs like centipedes, and you can occasionally see it relaxing from its swimming motion, only to flexibly walk or crawl through the tight caves, bending it's snake-/centipede-like body???

https://preview.redd.it/417iscbh4dle1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=28472b9c9cc6f54235529ea2286f9aa0ef7cdac5

It would still make sense to have the arrow-head or it's eel-like design. But to think of it so unnaturally crawling your way (with the clacking of these legs), then, with a powerful motion, LIFT itself off the corner to approach you like in the game?!

Damn. That's scary to me.

https://preview.redd.it/kky73euk4dle1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=9150b5b93852610c79f23cc38be4cec5ef2f4c24

What do you think? Could this have fixed the Shadow Leviathan for you?

Yeah, it's a cool concept. Still just a nuisance if you have the perimeter defense. But way better if it crawled.

GrowthOk5786 · OP · 7 months ago

True. The presence of it wouldn't have solved that issue - the perimeter defense might need something like a bigger cooldown or so to solve this feeling of invincibility without making the pds actually unrewarding

Sn2 Gameplay Idea: Leviathan Intraspecies and Interspecific Combat

Posted by Key_Landscape4802 · in r/subnautica · 5 months ago

Although the Sn2 discord chat has made it clear that the dev team won’t be making leviathans killable, I still believe that it would be a great idea for leviathans to be killed by other leviathan species as well as leviathans within the same species. This would not only create tight situations where you’re caught in between two leviathans fighting for territory, but also a new way to deal with leviathans, being that you could lure a larger leviathan to the smaller leviathan you want to be delt with, and the smaller would be killed and never bother you in that area again. This strategy can be seen in Ark (which I know is much different than Subnautica in a myriad of ways), but would still be pretty applicable to Subnautica in my opinion if allowed.

Some people may say that this makes dealing with leviathans “too easy” and “not a realistic feature in a survival game” if you can just lure an apex leviathan to a smaller one, however I believe that the process of “luring” the leviathan would still be a high risk situation (as the larger leviathan could easily eat you or simply replace the leviathan in the area you want leviathan free), is still very applicable to a survival game. For instance, luring sea dragon to kill a reaper leviathan, the reaper leviathan would be delt with but you still have the risk of the sea dragon prowling around.

Imagine the situation on our world: There’s a shark that keeps on stopping you from exploring this sunken shipwreck that you need to go to. So, you lure a killer whale over (which could also kill you) to deal with the shark. The shark is killed by the killer whale, so you’re able to loot the wreck while the killer whale is feeding on the shark remains, and then stealthily leave the area.

Although the luring mechanic may be a bit too “off the deep end” for Sn2, i believe that the ability to encounter leviathan fights would be a quite cool feature.

The idea of using a leviathan to distract a leviathan has a lot of cool potential

13 upvotes on reddit
Fireboaserpent · 5 months ago

I think a mechanic like this would be awesome for injuring or distracting leviathans, but tbh I agree with the devs on not killing them.

From what we've seen it looks like there's a squid type leviathan that can grab small fast vehicles and stuff, so being able to lure a leviathan over to distract it would be super fun.

I always wanted to see a Sea Dragon come up and take a Reaper. To see parts of the ecosystem in action.

Like a shark with a seal. As an introduction seeing that stuff would be neat to watch. We see the Reapers take the various smaller organisms out there but a scripted “reaper hunt” involving a sea Dragon would be neat to watch.

IMO, Sea dragon is the only actually scary leviathan

Posted by Vanillie261 · in r/subnautica · 1 month ago

Edit: before anything else, no, I'm not talking about it's design being scary. Half of the comment section didn't seem to read my text and only assume I'm talking about the design. When it comes to design, Reaper and Ghost obviously won. That's now why I said the Sea dragon is "scary". Pls read before you comment.

At least in my playthrough, I found Sea dragon to be the most intimidating than the others.

I mean, I was never once killed by any other leviathan. Reaper? He just glazed me and then I can easily heal and get back to doing the last thing I did. I never even got it to attack me when I was in my seamoth. Even though I went to the mountains and crash zone multiple times. Didn't even get to use my parameter defense.

Same goes with Ghost. Especially after I have the reinforce dice suit, his bite barely tickles. And he just starts screaming and bump me then leave. I'd build a base right next to one on the boneyard. And then after a few days, suddenly the ghost multiply, and now there's 2 of them next to my base. I'm not gonna question it, they're my neighbors now.

As for the Sea dragon? He is the first leviathan that actually killed me during my entire playthrough. And he did 3 times. One when I was picking up acid mushrooms in the lava zone, second when I was leaving my prawn suit momentarily because I tried to repair it, and third when I was trying to get rid of some lava larvae from my cyclop. He also won't stop attacking my cyclop once, forcing me to use all my power for the cyclop shield. Thankfully I have the thermo upgrade and I brought plenty of extra power cells to replace.

Because of this, Sea dragons are the only leviathan I'm genuinely afraid of. None of the other leviathans manage to kill me even once, best they did is eradicate half of my health, which I immediately replenish since I always carry a medkit everywhere. Sea dragons are jerks, everything else are cuddly pets.

I'm scared of them because they ended two 100% hardcore runs I was doing where I was literately 2 databank entries and the rocket away from completing and they killed me due to buggy fireball oneshots. Warpers have never done any damage to me. I struggle with the crab squids when I'm going to the degassi base. It doesn't seem to matter where I park. They're attacking my seamoth.

2 upvotes on reddit
MasterofTech333 · 1 month ago

I consider warpers problems because they can teleport you out of a prawn suit. Prawn suits are borderline indestructible so even if you get EMPed by a crab squid you can usually just wait it out. While warpers leave you completely vulnerable (also ranged attacks)

Crabsquids are aggressive towards lights. Turn off the headlights and park a moderate distance from them, they'll leave the seamoth be.

It's as if everything, and I mean literally everything, about them is designed to strike fear! Also, since you're more likely to encounter them early on in the game, you're less prepared to confront them.

As soon as I get the Prawn Suit with the drill bit and grapple arms, it's over for anything over 10ft in length!

Slow speed, silent running, sonar upgrade for keeping tabs on the ones nearby. Shut engines off if they get too close. If one gets close to the front viewport, hide elsewhere in the cyclops. It can and will try to attack you if it can see you inside the cyclops.

The leviathans aren't hard to avoid

Posted by [deleted] · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I've completed both games and I've had very few problems with hostile leviathans except for the one time I went into the void on purpose.

I knew how to get into the aurora without encountering the reapers from this sub, and while the juvenile ghosts at the lost river entrances are unavoidable, they don't do that much damage to the prawn/cyclops and lose interest in you pretty fast even within a small radius. Same goes for the sea dragon, and once it's gone, you can repair your vehicle.

In BZ, you have nothing to fear as soon as you get the perimeter defense upgrade, and even before then, you can repair your seatruck after each attack, since none of them can one shot it.

I was a bit scared to play SN because of them, but they turned out to be more of a nuisance than scary. Was your experience the same?

I recently started below zero and the Chelicerates are much better at sneaking up on me than reapers, I saw my first one 30 feet away after I looked the other direction for a bit and it grabbed my seatruck. Got away fine and repaired. Second time, one surprised me while I was in a crevice and I barely managed to back into the narrow entrance before it got to me. Kind of looked like a movie with it trying to get in.

I was terrified of the reapers when I first played Subnautica and still found them frightening (though avoidable) on later playthroughs. But for some reason I never had an issue with the Chelicerates even when first encountering them. I don't think they even registered as a leviathan to me - they are a bit smaller than a reaper and I mentally filed them closer to an ampeel - an annoyance but something that you could avoid fairly easily if you wanted to.

Get in your prawn and just go fast. Wait for an opening when it goes away and then grapple jump your way to where you want to go. Try to stay close to the ground so it's less likely to spot you. Beware that they can and will phase through solid rock sometimes so stay away from the sides of the lava chambers because if they're in the next one over and hear you it will just go through the wall lol

How to avoid the sea dragon leviathan in subnautica

Key Considerations for Avoiding the Sea Dragon Leviathan in Subnautica:

  1. Know Its Habitat: The Sea Dragon Leviathan primarily resides in the Inactive Lava Zone and Lost River. Avoid venturing into these areas unless necessary.

  2. Stay Quiet: The Sea Dragon is sensitive to noise. Move slowly and avoid using vehicles that produce loud sounds, like the Cyclops or Prawn Suit, when near its territory.

  3. Use Stealth: If you must explore near its habitat, consider using the Cloaking Device on your Seamoth (if equipped) to avoid detection.

  4. Keep Distance: If you encounter a Sea Dragon, maintain a safe distance. They can be aggressive and deal significant damage if they attack.

  5. Plan Your Routes: Familiarize yourself with the map and plan your routes to avoid areas where the Sea Dragon is known to roam. Use beacons to mark safe paths.

  6. Emergency Escape: Always have an escape plan. If you spot a Sea Dragon, be ready to retreat quickly to a safe area or your base.

Takeaway: The best strategy is to avoid the Sea Dragon Leviathan's territory altogether. If you must enter its domain, use stealth and keep your distance to minimize encounters.
