What Redditors are Saying

Finding Resources in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Use scanner rooms and explore biomes to locate resources.
  • Build bases in multiple biomes for efficient resource scanning.

Exploration and Story Progression

Exploration is key to finding resources in Subnautica. As you progress through the story, following PDAs and radio messages will naturally lead you to areas rich in specific resources [1:1]. For example, magnetite can be found in the Jellyshroom Caves, while rubies are located near Officer Keen's lifepod [5:2]. Exploring different biomes and marking them with beacons can also help you remember where resources are located [1:2].

Scanner Rooms

Building scanner rooms in various biomes is a highly effective strategy for locating resources. Scanner rooms allow you to scan for specific resources within their range, making it easier to pinpoint locations without spoilers [2:1][5:5]. Constructing a HUD chip from magnetite will enable you to see scanned resources directly on your display [5:9].

Biomes and Resource Locations

Different resources are concentrated in specific biomes. Lithium can be found in the Mushroom Forest, while crystalline sulfur is located in the Lost River [2:2][5:2]. Magnetite is prevalent in the Jellyshroom Caves [5:4], and cyclops fragments are best found in the Mushroom Forest and near the Aurora engines [5:2].

Interactive Maps and External Resources

For players who prefer visual aids, interactive maps like Subnauticamap.io provide detailed information on resource locations [5:1]. Additionally, community-generated spreadsheets and images can serve as handy guides when exploring the game [4:1].

Tips for New Players

For new players, building basic base pieces and scanner rooms early on can significantly enhance resource gathering [2:1]. Observing the environment and scanning flora and fauna will also provide valuable information about available resources and their uses [2:4].

Combination of scanner room and just exploring. The beauty of Subnautica is that you never know what you'll find when you explore.

There are several types of biomes, but scan for resources. You don’t need to remember, but follow where the story leads you.

Exploration. Experience. And sometimes scanner rooms.

In most cases you don't necessarily have to go looking for specific resources. As you follow the PDAs and radio messages and other story progression hooks, the game will typically lead you to most of the places that have the new resources you need.

Example: A PDA you find on the >!floating island!< leads you to >!the Degasi base in Jellyshroom!< where you find magnetite. The beacon for >!lifepod 19 !!Sunbeam plotline!< leads you to the >!mountain island !<where you find shale and lithium and such.

Lithium spawns in Mushroom forest.

Rubies spawn in Bulb Zone, next to the hot water vent thingies. Watch out for bonesharks.

It totally depends on the sort of resource you are after. They are spread out all over. Usually specific resorces are found in certain places while others are found throughout.

If you want to find everything yourself, without looking anything up, you'll want to find the fragments to build basic base pieces and a scanner room.

The scanner room checks for a resource you select within a range.

Build a scanner room in multiple biomes, and you'll start to see where all of the resources are throughout the world.

Besides that -- scan things and check your PDA. It'll tell you more about any resources it can make since some things require "samples."

Thx :) I'll try the scanner room trick. Cuz i got one in my main base but I never thought of putting one in different biomes lol. And also wdym by samples.

Creepvine sample. Table coral. Etc. You usually get these with your knife. Many samples aren't detected by the scanner room so you'll need to observe the world and scan things.

These become important later on with advanced materials and such.

Quality of Life Hack! (Zone name spoilers)

Posted by SquidFetus · in r/subnautica · 5 months ago

I've played through Subnautica so many times now that I mainly play it for large creative projects. Often this means I find myself looking up where to find a large resource node for a specific material, safe in the knowledge that no spoilers await me and that I've legitimately stumbled my way through the game before.

It's a little immersion breaking and inconvenient, so I made a handy spreadsheet with some basic info on where to find large resource deposits / outcrops and converted it into an image that I could set in a picture frame object. Now before I go on a resource trip, I just check this in-game screen in my base to plan my trip!

In Below Zero, the first time I played the game I also took a screenshot with the PDA open to the map data you find, and put that inside a picture frame in my base as well. Instant map! I think the picture frame is one of my favourite things to use in the game.

If you'd like this image for your own game, I uploaded it here. This will probably only work for the PC version of the game, where you can directly implant images into the game's screenshots folder. This is usually found within the C:\ProgramData\Unknown Worlds\Subnautica\ directory. I'm not sure which console versions are able to do this, if any.

Any other nice quality of life hacks you'd like to add?

Hi there! Sorry if I made it a bit hard to digest.

If you want to find a particular resource, look for it along the top row. For example, let’s look at magnetite.

You’ll notice the leftmost column corresponds to names of biomes in Subnautica. If you go down from “magnetite”, all the cells that are coloured pale yellow tell you which biomes you can find large mineral deposits in (you need a drill arm on a Prawn suit for those) and the ones that are lilac coloured show you where you can find outcrops that can be collected by hand.

In our magnetite example, looking underneath it we can see that there’s only a single pale yellow cell in that column, in the spot that lines up with the row named Jellyshroom Caves. This tells us that the only place you can find a large resource deposit of magnetite is in the Jellyshroom Caves. If you have a Prawn suit with a drill arm and are looking to mine out a large number of that resource then this is the part you might focus on. The other areas that have purple next to them are where you would find an outcrop of magnetite which is mainly useful for when you don’t have the Prawn suit or drill arm yet.

Some of them have “Caves Only” written on them too, that’s just to show that you need to be in the “underground” area of that biome to find the resource listed.

Some resources come from outcrops that don’t look like them or share their name. The magnetite in our example just looks like magnetite, but copper for example comes from limestone outcrops. That’s why the outcrop names are listed as well, just in case you forget what to look for.

If a cell is black, then you can’t find that resource in that area.

I hope that helps!

SquidFetus · OP · 5 months ago

I'm not sure it's possible. Does the Switch version of the game have its own internal screenshots that it chooses from, or can it choose from anything in your screenshot gallery? If you can choose any image from your gallery then I guess you could find a way to get this image in there. Not sure how that would work or if it is possible though, if I had to guess I'd say Nintendo has an in-house app that manages gallery importing.

Can anyone help me with resources in subnautica?

Posted by MEMEVERSE_FRISK2 · in r/subnautica · 1 year ago

I've just recently started a playthrough as a newbie, and I'm 13-14 hours in. I have most blueprints by now, but I cannot for the life of me find any magnetite, nor any cyclops fragments. I have 1 for the engine and some other fragment, but can't find any others. Can anyone tell me where I can find any magnetite or cyclops fragments? I'm stuck at this point in the game, and in general can't find much of the rarer materials like crystalline sulfur, ruby, ion cubes, and generally rarer stuff.

Cyclops fragments - Mushroom forest (signal for emissary will guide you there) Cyclops engine - near the Aurora engines/Underwater Islands wreck outside of it on the ground.  Ruby near Officer Keen lifepod and in general in that biome plenty Magnetite - Yellyshroom cave (Ozzies lifepod gives you a clue)  Ion Cubes generally in Alien facilities  Crystalline Sulfur in Lost River (green brine pools)

If you want to avoid spoilers, get yourself a scanner room. Build it near Lifepod 17. Use the remote cameras to find your first magnetite, then construct the HUD chip. A scanner room, solar panel, and hatch don’t take up a lot of inventory space so you can deconstruct it and take it from biome to biome to find everything you need.

Scanner room plus hud upgrade. Pop a couple of those suckers around the map and you’ll have a ton of whatever you’re looking for in no time. I have one in the safe shallows and another in the north west mushroom forest and it took me like 5 min to gather the resources for a cyclops.

Make circuits around the Aurora with a Cyclops to gather tons of metal salvage quickly and easily*.

Reapers make it not easily. Make 3-4 scanners along your route to track them and avoid them. Or kill them, if you're one of those people.

Unless you have some strong desire to do it “naturally” there is nothing wrong with using creative mode to scratch the itch of making a huge base. You already beat the game after all. You’d really save yourself a lot of hassle, and huge projects can cause burnout.

First of all make a Seamoth depth module if you haven’t yet, then make a depth module MK2. For that you need magnetite which is found in abundance in the Jellyshroom caves (big glowing mushrooms), then if you want rubies, the first place off the top of my head would be the grand reef (go in the direction of the big cloud to the right of the Aurora)

Mushroom cave for gold, lithium, and magnetite. Grassy plains (red grass) for quartz, sandstone. Sea traders path for shale out cropping. Shallows and the stalkers place (the green one) for limestone.

Personally, I love putting down a scanner base right by lifepod 17, near the entrance of the mushroom caves. Plenty of sandstone, limestone, metal salvage, quartz, and the goodies in the cave, of course.

I've been looking for a reason to write this down somewhere. Ignoring the stuff that's obvious, ubiquitous, or late-game (you'll find it when you get there), the first good place to find certain items is:

  • Lithium is in >!the Mushroom Forests!<
  • Magnetite is in >!the Jellyshroom Caves!<
  • Ruby tends to be >!near thermal vents!<
  • And there's a lot of good stuff in >!the caves on the QEP island.!<

If you forget what outcrops hide which resources, check your PDA.

Scanner Rooms are under-appreciated. Get yourself the HUD chip ASAP, priority number one as soon as you find your first Magnetite.

Also, grab a sample of every single plant the game will let you pick up and build a series of growbeds in and around your main seabase for them. With the possible exception of the Tiger Plant.

You can but if you see 4 bladder fish in an area the grav trap will keep them all there and make it visually clear where they are. Catch them faster with the sea glide or catch them at your leisure with the grav trap.

Another thing I’ve consider but have yet to try is using a grav trap as a temporary dump site for items. Say your exploring ruins and fill your inventory if you drop your items in an area you could use a grav trap to keep them suspended at depth. Not sure how well it would actually work though.

Quick and dirty resource gathering reference initiative

I am putting together a simple table with the best location for a quick resource grab when needed. This is a work in progress. Updates are welcome.

Tried to determine the single best location based on these criteria:

  • closest location to safe shallows
  • greatest number of large deposits (when available)

Basic resources

  • titanium: crash site
  • copper: grand reef
  • quartz: dunes
  • lead: crag field
  • salt: grassy plateaus
  • lithium: bulb zone
  • silver: mountains
  • gold: underwater islands

Late game locations

  • uraninite: >! lost river!<
  • nickel: >!lost river (green side) !<
  • ruby: >!lost river (green side) !<
  • cyanide: >!lava zone !<

Yes and no. It’s good for small amounts. When you need quantity such as a full inventory it’s not good because you are going to farm 3x more and throwing away 2/3 of what you collect. That’s why I want to stick with large deposits instead of outcrops.

how to find resources in subnautica

Key Considerations for Finding Resources in Subnautica:

  1. Know Your Resources:

    • Common Resources: Titanium, Quartz, Copper Ore, and Salt.
    • Rare Resources: Lithium, Gold, Diamond, and Uraninite.
    • Special Resources: Kyanite, Magnetite, and Ion Cubes.
  2. Explore Biomes:

    • Shallow Areas: Start in the Safe Shallows for basic resources like Titanium and Quartz.
    • Kelp Forests: Great for finding Copper Ore and Creepvine samples.
    • Grassy Plateaus: Look for Lithium and more advanced resources.
    • Deep Biomes: The Lost River and the Inactive Lava Zone contain rare resources like Kyanite and Uraninite.
  3. Use Tools Effectively:

    • Scanner: Use the scanner to identify and locate resources more efficiently.
    • Seamoth and Cyclops: Utilize vehicles to explore deeper areas safely and transport resources.
  4. Resource Nodes:

    • Look for resource nodes, which are clusters of specific materials. For example, limestone outcrops yield Titanium and Copper Ore, while sandstone outcrops yield Silver and Gold.
  5. Be Mindful of Your Inventory:

    • Always keep your inventory organized and have enough space for new resources. Consider crafting storage containers for excess materials.

Recommendations:

  • Prioritize Upgrades: Focus on upgrading your tools and vehicles early on to access deeper biomes and gather resources more efficiently.
  • Use the Map: Familiarize yourself with the map and key locations of resource-rich areas to streamline your resource-gathering efforts.

By exploring different biomes and utilizing the right tools, you'll be able to gather the resources you need to thrive in Subnautica. Happy diving!
