What Redditors are Saying

Subnautica Survival Tips

TL;DR

  • Explore fearlessly, use your PDA for guidance, and prioritize building a self-sustaining base.
  • Carry beacons to mark important locations and always have medkits handy.

Utilizing the PDA

Your PDA is an invaluable resource in Subnautica. It contains survival tips and detailed information about the game world [1:1]. Regularly checking your PDA can help you understand the environment better and provide essential guidance on how to survive [1:4].

Exploration and Base Building

Exploration is key to survival in Subnautica. Many players recommend rushing to the floating islands once you have a scanner and Seamoth, as it provides blueprints for a self-sustaining base [4:1]. Building a base quickly and powering it using nearby thermal vents can significantly enhance your survival chances [4:2]. Always carry beacons to mark places you want to revisit, and color-code them for easy navigation [2:10].

Food and Water Management

Managing food and water is crucial. Bleach can be used to create portable water, and marblemelons or Bulbo trees are excellent plant food sources [2:3][5:8]. Reginalds are recommended for fish-based nutrition [2:3]. Establishing indoor growbeds with marblemelons can ensure a steady supply of food and water at your base [5:8].

Creature Avoidance and Safety

Creatures pose a significant threat, especially in hardcore mode. Keeping medkits handy and maintaining maximum health can prevent most creatures from one-shotting you [5:1][5:2]. If encountering Leviathans, it's advisable to run or use the defense module on your Seamoth [5:2]. Throwing fresh peepers at reapers can distract them if they get too close [5:3].

General Survival Strategies

Save often and remember that dying isn't overly punishing in normal survival mode [2:1]. For hardcore mode, consider backing up your save file to avoid losing progress [5:5]. Additionally, bringing your Seamoth to a complete stop before exiting can prevent accidental deaths [5:3][5:4].

Hi everyone, just started playing subnautica. Just wondering if there was anything I should know before going further into the game?

Fear nothing and fear everything. Welcome to Subnautica

For my own experience I think it would be more fun diving into the game blindfolded. Because without knowing anything and just using wiki to find resources is much more fun and challenging. And nothing will beat the feeling of your first reaction whether those creatures are friendly or not hahahahahahaha. Goodluck on your playthrough 😉

Your PDA has 5 main tabs.

The fifth tab is called the databank IIRC, and it contains some information and tips.

Actually, your PDA straight up tells you to "check your PDA for detailed survival advice" at the start of the game.

As you’re playing Survival an important game mechanic to bear in mind is that every time you enter your lifepod or a base you built, it saves your inventory: if you die after that point you keep everything that was on you the last time you were in a base (plus one item of anything you picked up since then).

That also means that once you have a habitat builder, if you carry 4 titanium and a quartz, you can make yourself a tiny unpowered base wherever and whenever you like to use as a sort of portable save point. Without power you’d still drown but you won’t lose anything. Handy!

When you use bladderfish for water, catching 1 bladderfish and using the fabricator once gives you 20 water. When you use bleach (coral tube samples plus salt), you only need to find the salt (plus locate one coral tube, which should always be easy in the Safe Shallows), then 2 fabricator uses gives you 60 water. No contest.

Make and learn to use an Air Bladder. BIG help.

Enjoy!

Noted and very good advice will keep that in mind and yes deffo need to start using ait bladder been looking for mvb parts but at 100 metres and no rebreather monotonous going up for air few seconds looking then air need to make air pump maybe and some pipes probably help at the red gras biome wreck but can't remember where later cutter is 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bleach is easy to make and will end any dehydration problem you’re having. Reginalds are the best fish to eat or preserve. Marblemelon and Bulbo tree are the best plant food sources. Bulbo are better mathematically but either is more than sufficient. Cyclops is great and all but don’t feel like you must use it much less take it to endgame areas. Don’t go behind the Aurora unless you want lots of hugs. Good luck.

If you have played before than you know there are growable plants (bulbo trees and marblemelons are the best) as well as the planters available on the floating island. There are also bulbo trees on the mountain island if you have a grow pot or grow bed. All it takes is your survival knife and a short visit to end most of your concerns about food and water supply because that is by far the best the game has to offer.

You probably also know where to find the water filtration unit and alien containment unit if you prefer fish and water for food.

Carry a spare couple of beacons with you. When you find something cool you can drop them.

Your PDA lets you turn off beacons/signals to avoid your HUD getting cluttered and disorienting, and you can even colour them (I use green for bases, blue for vehicles, orange for points of interest and red for BadOhNoDoNotGoHere).

An actual beginners guide to the world of subnautica (spoiler free)

Posted by Dr3am_Watcher · in r/subnautica · 6 years ago

Yea yea, theres probably a ton of these things lying around, but i don’t care! Epic games launcher is letting people have it for free and it came out 2 weeks ago on xbox and PS4. So i’m going to try and help the newcomers in anyway possible!

I will not be using a map within my explanation, but it is highly recommended you find an updated 2018-2019 map of the area.

one last thing, if you play on survival or hardcore your a mans man...

starting out/safe shallows and kelp forest

So you awake in a flaming lifepod thats half broken. After easily grabbing the fire extinguisher, and putting out the fire, you can begin your expedition to escape a watery hell that awaits you.

So depending on your luck, you could be drifting to the south or relatively close to the stopping point of your lifepods drift path.

If you look around in your life pod, you can see a couple of things, that includes a storage unit, a fabricator, a broken radio, and a medical kit fabricator.

For right now, don’t worry about the radio, medical fabricator, or the broken wiring system. Its time to dive!

After getting your feet wet for the first time, you have a couple of options.

  1. Explore and learn your surroundings
  2. Start diving for resources

If your new, i’d advise just exploring, because at a certain point, the pretty and awe is replaced by pure anxiety and fear.

Once you’ve had the time to explore, you need to learn how to hunt and gather resources.

Most minerals are found within outcropings/ little breakable stones. These can be found around walls, ceilings, and in cave systems. You can find 2 types in the safe shallows and kelp forests: limestone and sandstone.

The most you should be worrying about is limestone drops, but it wouldn’t hurt to grab some other resources.

(Depending on the game mode) you need to drink and eat to live. Fortunately theres a great way to do it!

Bladderfish (have huge faint purple air sacks) can be used to filter water at your fabricator and other fish can be cooked or cured.

Focus on grabbing peepers and bladderfish (i’d say 3-4 baldderfish and 2-3 peepers until you get hungry or thirsty.)

After handling your thirst and hunger, and exploring/looting your area, your ready to start actually surviving.

You MAJORLY need 2 pieces of equipment: a scanner and a repair tool.

Its a rule of thumb to ALWAYS have your scanner on your person at all times, not only does it let you scan fauna/flora/etc, it will also give you information on said object and if you can use them for anything! Along with that, you can also scan broken fragments of pieces of equipment you can build and you will need for the adventure.

The repair tool has a couple of uses, but the major one is welding your broken life pod to a unbroken state.

After you make those two, make sure you fully repair your life pod, store any extra materials, and head out in the nearest forest of kelp.

Here you will find your first ‘scary monster’ the stalker. but don’t worry, they are easy to handle if you prepare.

There are two ways to distract a stalker while you dive and grab/scan materials

  1. Hold a fish in your hand and allow the stalker to eat it. This will make him passive and not attack you for 1-2 minutes.

  2. dropping a piece of scrap metal or titanium will tempt the stalker to ‘sharpen its teeth’ and instead go and pick up the dropped metal. (Note: ONLY titanium or scrap metal, no other metal will distract them.)

After grabbing some materials, head on back to your lifepod and start the final step of the beginners guide.

Build a habitat creation tool and search for a place you want to build your base at! (Blueprints for other buildings and such can be found around the world in wrecks or the sea floor) i’d advise trying to find the floating island (way) past the rear end of the aurora.

Final notes of the first guide: the louder the sound, the bigger and scarier it possibly is. (Except the whales that kinda just moan, they’re pretty cool.)

Defiantly try to build a base quickly and maybe try to get the seamoth pretty early. That’s the best I can come up with. I remember there being a thermal vent near where you start and I powered my base in my second game off of that. Worked really well.

Always carry a beacon or two to mark places that you want to come back to. Name the beacons

If your health is at the max the only creatures that can one shot you are late in the game, so carry one or two medkits at all times. Other than that the most dangerous creatures are the reapers. You can avoid these by not loitering on their home turf - (front, back and east side of the Aurora, the back of the Mountain Island and the Dunes). If you do encounter one, head for the surface and *strafe* as you go - you will usually outwit the stupid fish AI. Finally, you could add the defence module to your Seamoth - reapers will drop you like a hot potato once you activate it.

[WELCOME ABOARD, SKADOOSH] Subnautica Tips for Wubby

Posted by Leckersten · in r/PaymoneyWubby · 1 month ago
post image

Hey brother, absolutely killing it in Subnautica and couldn't be happier to watch you enjoy and play it. In hopes of keeping things going well and maintaining a good pace, I wanted to offer some small spoiler free "optimization" recommendations:

  • We need fragments. You're gatekeeping yourself from progression by not going out and scanning new fragments. This is priority #1, and absolutely required.
  • Utilize the Seamoth for oxygen resupply. Anytime you're going out to explore, get in that Seamoth. Get comfy jumping in and out of that bitch, it makes exploring much less tedious. No more swimming to the surface for oxygen.
  • Empty inventory going out. Full Inventorying coming in. Build some lockers and start amassing building supplies. Think of it like Minecraft, going into the mines and emptying your inventory into a chest at base.
  • Fragments are region/biome specific. Mostly, there is some overlap. We have sort of just been exploring the same starting region, in a small circle. You need to actually go out and explore more. In a linear direction. Look for boxes/wrecks specifically, they almost always have fragments.
  • Tired of manually finding these things? You might enjoy the benefits of a scanner room. Fragments required(we are seriously behind)
  • Beacons. I'll keep saying it until you utilize it, beacons are super helpful to keep track of where everything is. There is no map, so this is your next best bet. Fragments close to base.

Hope it helps! Best of luck out there and let me know if you have any questions or if anyone else has any spoiler free recommendations

We need GOALS for the fragments. Wubby said Minecraft being goal orientated is how he kept with it.

>Laser Cutter (Grassy Plateaus - the short red grass near the shallows). We can then revisit the aurora and get the remaining goodies from there (required to progress).

>MoonPool >!mushroom forest to the far west!<

>Modification Station Possible to find on the seabed in >!mushroom forest<!

>Cyclops >!Some are in the mushroom forest to the far west(low danger). Others can be found along the ridge that runs behind the Aurora(high danger). Be brave and go with an empty/secured inventory)!<

Bonus: >Battery Charger (Grassy Plateaus)

>Power Cell Charger - this isn’t needed today. You can recharge your power cells in the moonpool until you find the frags for power cell charger.

Death and inventory: Your inventory is “secured” when you enter a habitat. Any mats you pickup between exiting a habitat and death will drop. You keep the blueprints/scan progress on death, so trade your life for some unlocks.

You really want to avoid letting your vehicles explode. Save scumming is recommended if you don’t want to do extra farming.

##TLDR

  1. Get laser cutter from grassy plateaus.
  2. Go west to the >!mushroom forest!< biome because there are a lot of key things to scan there.
  3. Cave system between safe shallows and grassy plateau(wubby briefly swam in before unlocking rebreather in week 1 or 2)

BUILD BASE ASAP. easier to hold materials

5 upvotes on reddit
reqisreq · 5 years ago
  1. make knife, scanner, flippers and O2 tank

  2. scan everything with scanner. Make some batteries.

With scanner you can scan fragments and unlock blueprints of various items.

  1. try to find sea glider and habitat builder fragments, they are very important fragments.

Bonus) there is a very good area to go after craft sea glider. It is essensial for base building and has many other good things, but it will spoil the story a bit. (Missions will lead you there eventually but it is very late for a lot of peoples tastes). (Veteran players know where i am talking about)

If you want to go there go to south while staying on the surface. (the big ship is east. Use this to figure directions)

>!scan everything (scan both exterior and interior grow beds). Take at least one seed of melons and bulb trees with your knife, one potato and one lantern fruit with you. You can still plant rotted things!<

  1. build a base. Even if you haven’t gone to the place mentioned above, you could still make tubes, lockers and sun panels. It is enough to make a functional base. Make it close to lifepod 5 and use there as an inventory base. (If you went to the place mentioned above you can make a full base and don’t go back to lifepod

Also the story is good try to not get spoiled. Also always take the purple tablets.

Notes:

If you go near the big ship early, you are going to have a bad time.

Search for seamoth and cyclops fragments (cyclops will be hard to complete)

When a 45 min counter initiates, go to that place before countdown reaches zero. Stay outside and watch what happens when it reaches zero.

Have fun.

Mortaea · 5 years ago

For your bonus area, how big are the spoilers if I went to that area to learn how to build grow beds etc.? It's been driving me nuts that I can't do so yet, but I don't want to spoil a big piece of the plot. Minor spoilers I'm OK with. Even just visiting ahead of time will trigger the spoilers? >!If it helps at all, I just go to the point in the game where I got a few purple tablets.!<

Once you can build a scanner room and a HUD chip for it your life will become much easier. Build it near as many biomes as possible.

Learn what a reefback sounds like. If you hear something in the distance that isn't a reefback it's probably bad. In time you'll know what I mean by this.

Most useful plants will produce one or more seeds if hit by a knife. There are pots and gardens for crops you will eventually be able to build. Grow acid mushrooms, deep shrooms, and gel sacks.

Marble melons and Bulbo trees are the best food sources. When you find marble melons, those are the only ones you'll see in the game. Make sure you get seeds from them.

Most predators are attracted to lights. Once you get a prawn suit you can turn those off by removing the left power cell. Everything else has a switch for that.

Creepvine and its seed pods rot quickly. Turn them into lubricant, rubber, and fiber mesh ASAP.

Most predators won't kill you if you're holding a peeper in your hand. You'd be surprised how well this works.

subnautica survival tips

Here are some essential survival tips for Subnautica:

  1. Gather Resources Early: Start collecting basic resources like titanium, quartz, and copper as soon as you can. These materials are crucial for crafting tools and building your base.

  2. Manage Your Oxygen: Always keep an eye on your oxygen levels. Use the oxygen tank to extend your underwater time and consider crafting the rebreather for deeper dives.

  3. Build a Base: Establish a base near your starting location to store resources, craft items, and recharge your oxygen. Use solar panels for power during the day.

  4. Upgrade Your Equipment: Focus on upgrading your tools and equipment. The Scanner is essential for finding blueprints, while the Habitat Builder allows you to create a more advanced base.

  5. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Be cautious of predators and environmental hazards. Always have a plan for escape if you encounter dangerous creatures like the Reaper Leviathan.

  6. Use the Lifepod: Your Lifepod is a great starting point for storage and crafting. Make sure to return to it regularly to manage your inventory.

  7. Explore Biomes Gradually: Don’t rush into deeper biomes like the Lost River or the Aurora without proper equipment. Ensure you have a Seamoth or Prawn Suit for safer exploration.

  8. Food and Water Management: Keep a steady supply of food and water. Use the Fabricator to create water from salt and cook fish for sustenance.

  9. Scan Everything: Use your Scanner on every new item and creature you encounter. This will help you unlock blueprints and learn more about your environment.

  10. Save Often: Subnautica can be unpredictable. Save your game frequently to avoid losing progress, especially before exploring new areas.

Recommendation: Focus on building a Seamoth as soon as possible. It provides mobility, protection, and additional storage, making exploration much easier and safer.
