Cleaning LEGO bricks is a straightforward process that can help restore their appearance and ensure they remain in good condition. Here are some effective methods and tips gathered from various discussions:
Soaking and Washing
The most recommended method for cleaning LEGO bricks involves soaking them in warm, soapy water. Use a mild, neutral dish soap to avoid any potential damage to the plastic or printed elements [1:2],
[2:3]. Let the bricks soak for a few hours or overnight to loosen dirt and grime
[1:6],
[2:4]. After soaking, gently scrub the bricks with a soft toothbrush if necessary, especially for pieces with stubborn dirt
[2:3].
Rinsing and Drying
Once cleaned, rinse the LEGO pieces thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. You can use a colander to make this process easier [4:4]. After rinsing, shake off excess water or use a salad spinner to help remove it
[2:3]. Lay the pieces out on a towel to air dry, ensuring they are spread out and not stacked together to facilitate drying
[1:2],
[3:2].
Special Considerations for Stickers and Prints
For LEGO pieces with stickers or printed designs, take extra care during cleaning. Avoid scrubbing these areas too hard to prevent damage. Some users suggest washing stickered pieces separately and more gently [3:1]. There is some concern about soap damaging prints, but using a mild detergent should minimize any risk
[4:2].
Dusting and Maintenance
For regular dusting and maintenance, makeup brushes or small dusting brushes work well to reach into crevices and around studs [5:3],
[5:8]. Hand-held air blowers or canned air can also be used to remove loose dust, although some caution against using canned air indoors as it can redistribute dust
[3:9].
Alternative Methods
In cases where LEGO sets are extremely dusty or dirty, disassembling the set completely before cleaning might be necessary [5:1]. This allows for thorough cleaning and the added enjoyment of rebuilding the set afterward.
By following these methods, you can effectively clean your LEGO bricks and keep them looking as good as new. Always remember to handle delicate parts like stickers and printed pieces with care to preserve their original appearance.
What’s your wash routine? Warm soap water for how long? Air dry?
Just as @ccwillia81 said, my routine is simple soap (neutral), warm water and rest overnight. This way at least the harder dirt and whatever stuck to your bricks will loosen up and you'll be able to rinse it off with a towel or paper towel. I'm "lucky" I live in a very dry city so, bricks dry up really fast, matter of minutes, but you can just spread them in a towel and leave 'em in room temperature for some hours and they'll be fine
Not sure about OP but I personally soak in dish soap overnight. Rinse and place in bin with water and a little more soap and go through the pieces relatively quickly and scrub them down with a soft toothbrush. After that, rinse one more time and then air dry overnight. Probably overkill and definitely takes longer but the results make it worth it in my opinion.
Do your bricks creak?
Newbie here! Why the soap water? Old bricks that lost some color? How old is "old"? I kind of want to keep my new pieces nice and clean. Thanks in advance. :)
Soap is just to clean really, dirt , house dirt does get really stuck to plastic over time and with soap you can loosen it and rinse it afterwards. Nothing special, won't mess up with the brick colours. For me, old bricks are 80s bricks :D As this Castle is
Awesome, thank you!! :)
Do you have any advice for pieces with stickers on?
Never tried removing stickers from old bricks, but I guess warm water and soap will soften the paper and the glue so you can remove them with a towel later, I'd try that as neutral liquid soap never damaged my bricks
Oh, I meant in case we want to keep the stickers but still want to clean the pieces. But that's also really useful to know, thanks.
Vintage castle parts incoming!
My Lego got covered un fire extinguisher dust over a decade ago. I finally got it out of the garage and want to restore it. any suggestions? thanks in advance.
The r/lego wiki on the side actually has a post about cleaning Lego that you might find helpful.
thanks, this was the most helpful. very comprehensive for many scenarios.
Lather up a small amount of plant-based, fragrances-free dish soap, in slightly warm water. For pieces that have a lot of dust and finger oils stuck to the surface, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rise several times in clean water until soap bubbles are gone.
Shake water off pieces (or use salad spinner) and place them studs-down on a microfiber cloth or paper towel to air dry overnight. It is helpful to position pieces so that spaces that trap water are facing up if possible to facilitate evaporation.
I use a tiny bit of dishwasher soap, soak in a bathtub of Luke warm water for 4 hours. Stir every half hour. Drain tub and rinse with cold water. Place on towels with fans on it overnight.
My method:
I often just disassemble and reassemble. Cleans the set and you have the fun of building.
At this level of dirtiness I would personally just completely take it apart and wash the bricks with warm soap water and a rag, then let them dry for a day or two (not on direct sun). Put the stickered pieces separately and wash them gently to preserve stickers.
If it was slightly less dirty (read: more dust and less sticky) you could simply shower it, but the hard dirt that seems to be stickied on the bricks won't go like that.
For gentle mainteance every few weeks a can of air (or electric air duster) and brushes will get the dust off.
Don't use a can of air, it simply blows the dust back out into the air to resettle on your sets over time. A Swiffer duster does a much better job for light dust accumulation
Obviously a can of air shouldn't be used inside. You take the Legos outside (balcony, porch, lawn, whatever), blow the dust away and then bring them back in.
I attest to brushes, use a spare set of my wife's makeup brushes she doesn't use for dusting. Gets every book and cranny.
This! My sister gave me one decades ago for dusting model airplanes (fragile!) and I still use it for dusting tiny things like decorations, electronics, and even LEGO. Thought I was the only one. Ha ha
There's a whole cleaning guide in the side bar
Warmish water and an electric toothbrush
I've been looking through my big bins of mismatched Lego from when I was younger and I've found some cool minifigures like original 212th clones and kashyyyk scouts. Those bins, however, are pretty nasty, with like decade-old chip crumbs, so I'd really like to clean them off before I start putting them in MOCs and such. Can they be cleaned without damaging them, and if so how should I do it? Thanks in advance.
Lightly warm water and soap
I thought soap damaged the print on LEGO figures. I assume it varies depending on brand?
They suggest a mild detergent.
I cleaned some minifigs and bricks today by just putting them in warm water and mixing in a pinch of dish washing detergent and then letting it soak for about an hour.
Strained them, patted them dry with paper towels and then laid them out on paper towels to dry.
No damage and the minifigs are almost 10 years old.
For small pieces I use an electric toothbrush.
I just did this, and let them soak in warm water and pomolive dish soap (it’s the brand we had in the kitchen lol) let ‘em sit for 2-4 hrs or so and then spread them out on a towel to let them dry. It seems to have gone pretty well! They are a lot less dusty for sure! Used a colander to rinse off the soap water.
In all honesty, I don’t do it often enough, but:
Good luck!
Thanks! How do you get rid of the tiny bits of dust around studs and where it says “LEGO”?
I disassemble, wash, dry. Reassemble.
Building is the fun part of lego.
How do you stop them getting muddy from the wet dust?
you wash the dust off, you dont spray water on the dust. Whole set comes apart. Sort out stickers, electrics and pneumatics. Then dump in soapy water. Dump in clean water. dry on large towel.
also what about sets that get dusty by the time you’re finished? I have lion knights castle for example
I mean no offense but you must be a really slow builder or live on a construction site. It takes about a year for my sets to get so dusty they need reassembling.
I have a set of dusting brushes of various sizes that I think are very similar to makeup brushes
Thanks!
Makeup brushes!!! They work wonderfully (i got after a suggestion on FB)
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much!
Hi everyone! I’m curious—how do you clean your LEGO castle sets, and how often do you do it?
I’ve been using a soft brush (like a makeup or paintbrush) to remove the dust from mine. It does an okay job, but honestly, I’m not very happy with the results. It feels like the dust always comes back too quickly, or some of it never fully goes away—especially in the smaller corners and between bricks.
I’m wondering if anyone has found a better method—like vacuuming, washing, or using compressed air—that actually works well without risking damage. Also, how often do you clean yours? Do you ever disassemble them for a deep clean?
Thanks in advance for the tips!
I use a car detailing brush, but have a handheld vacuum there so I'm not just moving the dust around.
I use a makeup brush, then I blow off any remaining with compressed air, and I think the key is running an air filter in the room and full blast for the day you do it. Blowing the dust off just means it will resettle in a few hours, the air filters gets the majority of it before that happens.
If you do it once a week compressed air works. But it needs weekly maintenance
Water is going to leak in-between each and every piece, and then when left in the dark and without much ventilation... yeah you're going to wind up with mold after awhile. At the very least some stinky gunk.
I have a fine mesh laundry bag. I disassemble, then put in washing machine on delicate cycle. A small amount of mild soap. Works like a charm!
A makeup powder brush (that was never used for makeup!). If I dust once a week there's never any build up, so then I don't have to wash them.
Do you take 'em off the shelf once a week to dust off? Seems like a lot of work once the collection gets big, haha.
No, I dust in place with the makeup brush! That'd be crazy to try to move the entire collection 😅
Edited to add: my husband just bought me this electric duster, it I haven't tried it on the collection yet!
Soft bristled small paintbrush works for dust.
Soap water toothbrush for dirt.
I use one while holding the vacuum nozzle nearby and gently fling the dust towards the vacuum.
I use a dollar store makeup brush. Very soft and great coverage.
Good for painting too.
Dirt? How that get in there?
When the kid that owned the used lego before you spills pudding on their bricks at lunch
I use display cases from unique display
Display cases are great, but just like lighting sets, most of them are so darn expensive. I can’t justify spending money on that stuff when I could be using that money to just buy more Lego sets lol
Power Washer
U clean them?!
I use a toothbrush to dust.
I use eyeshadow brushes or kids’ watercolor brushes.
Canned air
Silly putty
A soft paintbrush can help dislodge dust.
A vacuum cleaner with tights over the hose can vacuum up dust, and will catch any bits of Lego unfortunate enough to be broken loose.
I have a lot of Legos and want to know the best way to dust them
I run a bricklink store put it in a mesh laundry bag then put in washer with alittlw detergent. That's how I clean bulk and anything that dirty
A little simple liquid soap, warm water and toothbrush. For that level of dust/grime, that will be the quickest method (cleaning with compressed air won't be enough and cue tips/paint brush will take forever). If you do wash the pieces, buy a salad spinner, works great for drying pieces quickly.
I discovered the toothbrush thing myself when I had my old Legos out, I was giddy with excitement to see just how well it worked.
Dude when I learned how to properly clean Lego sets I went crazy and would spend hours in my basement just cleaning them all 😂
Just tried the tooth brush and soap, and it works really well, thank you
And after your models are clean, you can use Make-Up brushes to do general dusting every now and again. They work beautifully as little dusters. I have a couple that fan out, and one that has a fine tip for those hard to reach creavaces.
Did you take the entire display apart to clean? Im not sure what set this is or how long reassembly would be. I imagine a deep clean requires taking everything apart though.
Throwing this out there for anyone reading- nylon bristle toothbrushes (most toothbrushes) can and often may leave micro scratches on the LEGO, especially if you apply too much pressure. It's not a HUGE deal, but on smooth plates or other such pieces it can be a bit of an eyesore for some. Nowadays I use an electric air duster to remove the bulk, and if I want to do a full clean I disassemble, wash in soapy warm water, then dry in a salad spinner. Love that thing
Serious answer, take it apart, run the pieces through a salad spinner with a few drops of dawn, drain salad spinner and spin another 30 seconds to get rid of excess water, lay out on a towel overnight. I assume this is the Death Star, it’ll take 9-10 salad spinner loads and two towels to lay out. The next morning, you’ll have clean, dry legos, put it back together or sort pieces and store. I had the big 2012 R2D2 spill out of the box in my attic and the pieces sat there for 12 years. I finally got all the pieces together and used this method a month ago. Put it together good as new
Take apart. Soap and water. Dry. Rebuild
Pressure washer on high
Throw it in the washer
Do you have any suggestions?
I use custom designed plexiglass cases. For those not in cases I use camera cleaning kit of brushes and hand squeezable blower.
Hahaha!!!... I don't 😁✌️
What do you mean "dust"? That's their protective anti-uv coating.
i use a fluffy never used makeup brush!
Keyboard vacuum and big makeup brush
make-up brush, no compress air just that, it gets everywhere and every dust without putting a force at the lego pieces or figs
Yup this
