How to Clean LEGO Bricks

Cleaning LEGO bricks is a straightforward process that can help restore their appearance and ensure they remain in good condition. Here are some effective methods and tips gathered from various discussions:

Soaking and Washing

The most recommended method for cleaning LEGO bricks involves soaking them in warm, soapy water. Use a mild, neutral dish soap to avoid any potential damage to the plastic or printed elements [1:2], [2:3]. Let the bricks soak for a few hours or overnight to loosen dirt and grime [1:6], [2:4]. After soaking, gently scrub the bricks with a soft toothbrush if necessary, especially for pieces with stubborn dirt [2:3].

Rinsing and Drying

Once cleaned, rinse the LEGO pieces thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. You can use a colander to make this process easier [4:4]. After rinsing, shake off excess water or use a salad spinner to help remove it [2:3]. Lay the pieces out on a towel to air dry, ensuring they are spread out and not stacked together to facilitate drying [1:2], [3:2].

Special Considerations for Stickers and Prints

For LEGO pieces with stickers or printed designs, take extra care during cleaning. Avoid scrubbing these areas too hard to prevent damage. Some users suggest washing stickered pieces separately and more gently [3:1]. There is some concern about soap damaging prints, but using a mild detergent should minimize any risk [4:2].

Dusting and Maintenance

For regular dusting and maintenance, makeup brushes or small dusting brushes work well to reach into crevices and around studs [5:3], [5:8]. Hand-held air blowers or canned air can also be used to remove loose dust, although some caution against using canned air indoors as it can redistribute dust [3:9].

Alternative Methods

In cases where LEGO sets are extremely dusty or dirty, disassembling the set completely before cleaning might be necessary [5:1]. This allows for thorough cleaning and the added enjoyment of rebuilding the set afterward.

By following these methods, you can effectively clean your LEGO bricks and keep them looking as good as new. Always remember to handle delicate parts like stickers and printed pieces with care to preserve their original appearance.

What’s your wash routine? Warm soap water for how long? Air dry?

4 upvotes on reddit
K
kaufmann_i_am · OP · 5 years ago

Just as @ccwillia81 said, my routine is simple soap (neutral), warm water and rest overnight. This way at least the harder dirt and whatever stuck to your bricks will loosen up and you'll be able to rinse it off with a towel or paper towel. I'm "lucky" I live in a very dry city so, bricks dry up really fast, matter of minutes, but you can just spread them in a towel and leave 'em in room temperature for some hours and they'll be fine

1 upvotes on reddit
ccwillia81 · 5 years ago

Not sure about OP but I personally soak in dish soap overnight. Rinse and place in bin with water and a little more soap and go through the pieces relatively quickly and scrub them down with a soft toothbrush. After that, rinse one more time and then air dry overnight. Probably overkill and definitely takes longer but the results make it worth it in my opinion.

Soap is just to clean really, dirt , house dirt does get really stuck to plastic over time and with soap you can loosen it and rinse it afterwards. Nothing special, won't mess up with the brick colours. For me, old bricks are 80s bricks :D As this Castle is

Never tried removing stickers from old bricks, but I guess warm water and soap will soften the paper and the glue so you can remove them with a towel later, I'd try that as neutral liquid soap never damaged my bricks

Lather up a small amount of plant-based, fragrances-free dish soap, in slightly warm water. For pieces that have a lot of dust and finger oils stuck to the surface, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rise several times in clean water until soap bubbles are gone.

Shake water off pieces (or use salad spinner) and place them studs-down on a microfiber cloth or paper towel to air dry overnight. It is helpful to position pieces so that spaces that trap water are facing up if possible to facilitate evaporation.

My method:

  1. Break down al the pieces and put them into gallon ziploc bags about 3/4 full.
  2. Two squirts of dish soap, then fill bag with warm water and seal.
  3. Let sit overnight.
  4. Drain water out of bags and spread pieces out on towels to air dry for at least 24 hours.
  5. Move pieces around during drying process so none are stuck together.

At this level of dirtiness I would personally just completely take it apart and wash the bricks with warm soap water and a rag, then let them dry for a day or two (not on direct sun). Put the stickered pieces separately and wash them gently to preserve stickers.

If it was slightly less dirty (read: more dust and less sticky) you could simply shower it, but the hard dirt that seems to be stickied on the bricks won't go like that.

For gentle mainteance every few weeks a can of air (or electric air duster) and brushes will get the dust off.

19 upvotes on reddit
Cherrypunisher13 · 2 years ago

Don't use a can of air, it simply blows the dust back out into the air to resettle on your sets over time. A Swiffer duster does a much better job for light dust accumulation

Obviously a can of air shouldn't be used inside. You take the Legos outside (balcony, porch, lawn, whatever), blow the dust away and then bring them back in.

What's the best way to wash Lego bricks + minifigures?

Posted by le4sh · in r/legostarwars · 3 years ago

I've been looking through my big bins of mismatched Lego from when I was younger and I've found some cool minifigures like original 212th clones and kashyyyk scouts. Those bins, however, are pretty nasty, with like decade-old chip crumbs, so I'd really like to clean them off before I start putting them in MOCs and such. Can they be cleaned without damaging them, and if so how should I do it? Thanks in advance.

They suggest a mild detergent.

I cleaned some minifigs and bricks today by just putting them in warm water and mixing in a pinch of dish washing detergent and then letting it soak for about an hour.

Strained them, patted them dry with paper towels and then laid them out on paper towels to dry.

No damage and the minifigs are almost 10 years old.

I just did this, and let them soak in warm water and pomolive dish soap (it’s the brand we had in the kitchen lol) let ‘em sit for 2-4 hrs or so and then spread them out on a towel to let them dry. It seems to have gone pretty well! They are a lot less dusty for sure! Used a colander to rinse off the soap water.

In all honesty, I don’t do it often enough, but:

  • Cheap make up brushes (got a set with different sizes)
  • Hand-held air blower (small; intended for cleaning keyboards and such — canned air probably works fine too)

Good luck!

How do you clean your lego castle set?

Posted by Perod29 · in r/legocastles · 1 month ago

Hi everyone! I’m curious—how do you clean your LEGO castle sets, and how often do you do it?

I’ve been using a soft brush (like a makeup or paintbrush) to remove the dust from mine. It does an okay job, but honestly, I’m not very happy with the results. It feels like the dust always comes back too quickly, or some of it never fully goes away—especially in the smaller corners and between bricks.

I’m wondering if anyone has found a better method—like vacuuming, washing, or using compressed air—that actually works well without risking damage. Also, how often do you clean yours? Do you ever disassemble them for a deep clean?

Thanks in advance for the tips!

I use a makeup brush, then I blow off any remaining with compressed air, and I think the key is running an air filter in the room and full blast for the day you do it. Blowing the dust off just means it will resettle in a few hours, the air filters gets the majority of it before that happens.

Water is going to leak in-between each and every piece, and then when left in the dark and without much ventilation... yeah you're going to wind up with mold after awhile. At the very least some stinky gunk.

A little simple liquid soap, warm water and toothbrush. For that level of dust/grime, that will be the quickest method (cleaning with compressed air won't be enough and cue tips/paint brush will take forever). If you do wash the pieces, buy a salad spinner, works great for drying pieces quickly.

1 upvotes on reddit
coggearred · 8 months ago

Throwing this out there for anyone reading- nylon bristle toothbrushes (most toothbrushes) can and often may leave micro scratches on the LEGO, especially if you apply too much pressure. It's not a HUGE deal, but on smooth plates or other such pieces it can be a bit of an eyesore for some. Nowadays I use an electric air duster to remove the bulk, and if I want to do a full clean I disassemble, wash in soapy warm water, then dry in a salad spinner. Love that thing

1 upvotes on reddit
Commercial-Day8360 · 8 months ago

Serious answer, take it apart, run the pieces through a salad spinner with a few drops of dawn, drain salad spinner and spin another 30 seconds to get rid of excess water, lay out on a towel overnight. I assume this is the Death Star, it’ll take 9-10 salad spinner loads and two towels to lay out. The next morning, you’ll have clean, dry legos, put it back together or sort pieces and store. I had the big 2012 R2D2 spill out of the box in my attic and the pieces sat there for 12 years. I finally got all the pieces together and used this method a month ago. Put it together good as new

How to clean LEGO bricks

Here are some effective methods to clean LEGO bricks:

  1. Soaking in Warm Soapy Water:

    • Fill a basin with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap.
    • Submerge the LEGO bricks and let them soak for about 10-15 minutes.
    • Use a soft brush (like a toothbrush) to gently scrub any stubborn dirt or grime.
  2. Rinsing:

    • Rinse the bricks thoroughly under warm running water to remove soap residue.
    • Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.
  3. Drying:

    • Lay the bricks out on a clean towel or drying rack to air dry completely.
    • Ensure they are fully dry before storing or reassembling to prevent mold.
  4. Using a Dishwasher (Optional):

    • Place LEGO bricks in a mesh laundry bag or a dishwasher-safe container.
    • Use a gentle cycle with no heat drying. Avoid using detergent if possible, as it can leave residues.
  5. Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

    • Do not use bleach or other harsh chemicals, as they can damage the bricks.

Key Considerations:

  • Always check for any stickers or decals on the bricks, as these may not withstand soaking or washing.
  • For delicate or vintage pieces, hand cleaning is recommended to avoid damage.

Recommendation: For regular cleaning, the warm soapy water method is effective and safe. If you have a large collection, consider using the dishwasher method for convenience, but always prioritize the safety of your bricks.
