Cleaning LEGO sets can be a daunting task, especially if you're dealing with large collections or intricate builds. Here are some effective methods and tips gathered from various discussions to help you clean your LEGO sets without damaging them.
Dusting and Surface Cleaning
For regular dusting and surface cleaning, many users recommend using makeup brushes due to their soft bristles which effectively remove dust without scratching the plastic [1:2]
[1:4]. Canned air can also be used to blow away loose dust, especially in hard-to-reach areas
[4:2]. Paintbrushes and toothbrushes are other alternatives that work well for detailed cleaning
[2:5]
[4:5].
Deep Cleaning
For a more thorough clean, disassembling the set and washing the pieces is often recommended. A gentle dish soap solution with warm water can be used, and a soft toothbrush can help scrub stubborn dirt [3:3]
[3:4]. After washing, it's important to rinse the pieces thoroughly and let them air dry on a towel overnight
[3:3].
Washing Machines and Dishwashers
Some users suggest using a washing machine or dishwasher for cleaning LEGO bricks, but caution should be taken. If using a washing machine, place the bricks in a mesh laundry bag and use a low temperature setting to avoid damage [5:1]. For dishwashers, place the bricks on the top shelf, use a low heat setting, and remove them before the drying cycle starts
[2:3].
Handling Stickers and Printed Parts
Special care should be taken with pieces that have stickers or prints. It's generally advised not to submerge these parts in water as it can cause peeling or fading. Instead, gently clean around them with a damp cloth or Q-tips [5:1]
[5:4]. If stickers are already deteriorating, consider replacing them with third-party options after cleaning
[5:3].
Preventative Measures
To minimize future dust accumulation, consider displaying LEGO sets in enclosed cabinets or cases. While this won't completely eliminate dust, it significantly reduces the amount compared to open shelving [4:9].
By following these methods, you can keep your LEGO sets looking vibrant and new while preserving any stickers or printed elements.
My question is simple, can I deep clean my lego sets without damaging any stickers or plastic and without having to dismantle them completely and clean each part individually then reassemble it? Like say dumping it in a tub of isopropyl alcohol or something? Maybe hydrogen peroxide and vinegar or something?
I live on a farm, and dust is just unavoidable no matter what i do, so things get dusty constantly, my tumbler is a pretty extreme example though since I never really cleaned it outside of basic dusting. I dont really want to have to disassemble all my sets whenever they get dusty though so I was hoping one of yall would know a secret not-so-secret backdoor for cleaning sets.
I do not have any special tools, nor do I really know of any. I've only ever built sets, not cleaned them because I never really worried about it.
My wife gave me a makeup brush and it is killer for cleaning dust off the displays pieces
“My wife bought me legos for Christmas”
“And I bought her a collection of make up brushes so I can use them to clean my Lego”
I got a pair of ELF full face brushes after a reddit recommendation. $6 US. Works very well and highly recommend.
Will double the make up brush, if you don’t have a wife ask your girlfriend/sister/mom/grandma/literally any girl you know probably has one to spare ✌🏻
If you have a female in your life, offer to buy her some new makeup brushes in exchange for her old ones (be sure to tamp out any remaining makeup from them). Then she’ll have something nice and new and you’ll have what you need too. Win-win.
This is the way.
That's the method I use. It's really good for Lego cleaning.
I use a steam cleaner on low pressure for larger sets without stickers (like Titanic). Otherwise, a large makeup brush.
Could always use a paintbrush to remove the dust. Finer the bristles the better I would think.
I recycled my wife's makeup brush for these, good for keyboard dusters too.
Leaf blower
This is asked frequently. Try a search on this sub for "how to clean"
Dishwasher, top shelf, low heat if you can adjust it, and pull before the dry cycle.
You’d be surprised what you can clean with some warm soapy water and a toothbrush.
What this gentleman said!
Paintbrush

My Lego got covered un fire extinguisher dust over a decade ago. I finally got it out of the garage and want to restore it. any suggestions? thanks in advance.
The r/lego wiki on the side actually has a post about cleaning Lego that you might find helpful.
thanks, this was the most helpful. very comprehensive for many scenarios.
Lather up a small amount of plant-based, fragrances-free dish soap, in slightly warm water. For pieces that have a lot of dust and finger oils stuck to the surface, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rise several times in clean water until soap bubbles are gone.
Shake water off pieces (or use salad spinner) and place them studs-down on a microfiber cloth or paper towel to air dry overnight. It is helpful to position pieces so that spaces that trap water are facing up if possible to facilitate evaporation.
I use a tiny bit of dishwasher soap, soak in a bathtub of Luke warm water for 4 hours. Stir every half hour. Drain tub and rinse with cold water. Place on towels with fans on it overnight.
It depends on the situation. For assembled sets a combination of canned air and brushes work best for me. I use makeup brushes that come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The angled ones help with details. For stubborn issues I have used Qtips sometimes moistened with water.
I was at a convention recently, and the local brick club has a huge display. I asked the same question and they said the exact same thing. Specifically, makeup brushes.
Toothbrushes work pretty well
I had a set the other day that was so gross from being left out for 25 years so I disassembled the whole thing and washed it (with soap and water) like it was dirty dishes, using strainers to keep the small parts safe from being lost. left it to dry for about 24 hours before assembling. Might have been a little bit of a gamble but holy shit every single piece looked brand new after. Looks great, didn't lose anything.
All the things mentioned by others here are valid, but the best thing about Lego is that at the end of the day you can take a lot of sets apart, rinse the parts off and reassemble the model when dry
Ince mesh bag put in the dishwasher!
Done for the day. I have more lego but no more room :(
Are these IKEA cabinets? I have 2 but different
Nice setup, You might want to mod it so you can put 2 more layers for the Speed Champions.
edit: I'm blind, it's already modded.
You'll still get dust with that kind of cabinet, ways, ways less than with open shelves though. The gap around the door is large enough to let dust pass so You'll have to dust from time to time.
Thks
Hey guys, just enquiring about some tips on cleaning old Lego sets. I want to give my collection a good clean before moving it into a glass cabinet for display. It has been very neglected over the years so the dust and dirt build up is pretty immense.
Would I have to take them apart to give each piece a good clean or is there a way to get an effective clean while the sets are still whole. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks 😊
Bro got the Republic Dropship with AT-OT, thats a grail right there. Such an awesome collection.
Thanks, i had to ask a lot for it back when I was a kid. Didn't realise how much i cooked with my choices until getting back into Lego recently. Kinda why I want to respect it and get them cleaned up.
Disassemble and keep the sets separated, wash all plain parts in a clothesbag in the washing machine at low temperature with a bit of curdsoap, do not do that with sticker and print parts or minifigures. Rebuild and enjoy. Edit:don’t wipe them dry but rather let them dry by air. You might get smears, especially on tiles and such.
Honestly, i think you'd best just peel off all the stickers at this point and wash all the bricks, and then get 3rd party replacements. I recently did this, among others, for my 2008 gunship, which had the exact same peeling issue you see in these pictures. 3rd party stickers look really good now; you can't really tell the difference. I'd hate to have the entire set looking squeeky clean, but stiff have the ugly deteriorated original stickers on them.
That's what I was thinking with the stickers, they have degraded a lot so it would be good to get fresh ones to go with the clean set.
My old early 2000 era stickers have held up really well. I was very surprised.
Where'd you get the 3rd party stickers for the 2008 gunship from?
Thanks for the advice, gonna enjoy rebuilding this lot
This is actually a realy good idea I'm going to try this later, thank you
The best would be to disassemble and wash. If you don’t want to go that far you could get a couple interior detailing brushes and use some soapy water and give them a gentle scrub.
Take em apart. Wash them with soap and water in a giant bin. Get new stickers.
Ain’t no way around it, those are filthy lol
That republic drop ship and at-ot look beyond saving, I'll just take them off your hands for you. You know... Despose of them properly obviously.. 😏😆
I often just disassemble and reassemble. Cleans the set and you have the fun of building.
My method:
At this level of dirtiness I would personally just completely take it apart and wash the bricks with warm soap water and a rag, then let them dry for a day or two (not on direct sun). Put the stickered pieces separately and wash them gently to preserve stickers.
If it was slightly less dirty (read: more dust and less sticky) you could simply shower it, but the hard dirt that seems to be stickied on the bricks won't go like that.
For gentle mainteance every few weeks a can of air (or electric air duster) and brushes will get the dust off.
Don't use a can of air, it simply blows the dust back out into the air to resettle on your sets over time. A Swiffer duster does a much better job for light dust accumulation
Obviously a can of air shouldn't be used inside. You take the Legos outside (balcony, porch, lawn, whatever), blow the dust away and then bring them back in.
I attest to brushes, use a spare set of my wife's makeup brushes she doesn't use for dusting. Gets every book and cranny.
This! My sister gave me one decades ago for dusting model airplanes (fragile!) and I still use it for dusting tiny things like decorations, electronics, and even LEGO. Thought I was the only one. Ha ha
There's a whole cleaning guide in the side bar
Warmish water and an electric toothbrush
Hi everyone! I’m curious—how do you clean your LEGO castle sets, and how often do you do it?
I’ve been using a soft brush (like a makeup or paintbrush) to remove the dust from mine. It does an okay job, but honestly, I’m not very happy with the results. It feels like the dust always comes back too quickly, or some of it never fully goes away—especially in the smaller corners and between bricks.
I’m wondering if anyone has found a better method—like vacuuming, washing, or using compressed air—that actually works well without risking damage. Also, how often do you clean yours? Do you ever disassemble them for a deep clean?
Thanks in advance for the tips!
I use a car detailing brush, but have a handheld vacuum there so I'm not just moving the dust around.
I use a makeup brush, then I blow off any remaining with compressed air, and I think the key is running an air filter in the room and full blast for the day you do it. Blowing the dust off just means it will resettle in a few hours, the air filters gets the majority of it before that happens.
If you do it once a week compressed air works. But it needs weekly maintenance
Water is going to leak in-between each and every piece, and then when left in the dark and without much ventilation... yeah you're going to wind up with mold after awhile. At the very least some stinky gunk.
I have a fine mesh laundry bag. I disassemble, then put in washing machine on delicate cycle. A small amount of mild soap. Works like a charm!
I have a lot of Legos and want to know the best way to dust them
A little simple liquid soap, warm water and toothbrush. For that level of dust/grime, that will be the quickest method (cleaning with compressed air won't be enough and cue tips/paint brush will take forever). If you do wash the pieces, buy a salad spinner, works great for drying pieces quickly.
Throwing this out there for anyone reading- nylon bristle toothbrushes (most toothbrushes) can and often may leave micro scratches on the LEGO, especially if you apply too much pressure. It's not a HUGE deal, but on smooth plates or other such pieces it can be a bit of an eyesore for some. Nowadays I use an electric air duster to remove the bulk, and if I want to do a full clean I disassemble, wash in soapy warm water, then dry in a salad spinner. Love that thing
I discovered the toothbrush thing myself when I had my old Legos out, I was giddy with excitement to see just how well it worked.
Dude when I learned how to properly clean Lego sets I went crazy and would spend hours in my basement just cleaning them all 😂
Just tried the tooth brush and soap, and it works really well, thank you
And after your models are clean, you can use Make-Up brushes to do general dusting every now and again. They work beautifully as little dusters. I have a couple that fan out, and one that has a fine tip for those hard to reach creavaces.
Did you take the entire display apart to clean? Im not sure what set this is or how long reassembly would be. I imagine a deep clean requires taking everything apart though.
Nah, just give that sweet little Death Star to me, I’ll clean it for you and keep it as finders keepers
I run a bricklink store put it in a mesh laundry bag then put in washer with alittlw detergent. That's how I clean bulk and anything that dirty
Take apart. Soap and water. Dry. Rebuild
Throw it in the washer
Serious answer, take it apart, run the pieces through a salad spinner with a few drops of dawn, drain salad spinner and spin another 30 seconds to get rid of excess water, lay out on a towel overnight. I assume this is the Death Star, it’ll take 9-10 salad spinner loads and two towels to lay out. The next morning, you’ll have clean, dry legos, put it back together or sort pieces and store. I had the big 2012 R2D2 spill out of the box in my attic and the pieces sat there for 12 years. I finally got all the pieces together and used this method a month ago. Put it together good as new
Hi,
About a year ago I rediscovered Lego and have since obtained a few Star Wars ships and a few cars. I noticed that they have started collecting a ton of dust and I’m struggling to clean it up. I searched for tips on YouTube but didn’t find anything useful.
Does anyone have any tips? Cheers!
Put a good portion of them in a pillowcase. Tie it closed. Put in washing machine on delicate with a small amount of detergent. Hand pillowcase on line to drive. Perfect.
I use the diswasher. The washing machine, even on delicate, can still damage them
Sounds reasonable though I've never had a problem. Also, I don't have a dishwasher.
I did see people doing that on YouTube. The downside of it is that I’ll have to disassemble the sets. Also I imagine it will damage any stickers.
Compressed air or a soft bristle paint brush work best for me!
I like using swiffer papers. They take up dust very well.
A mild soap and soft bristle tooth brush with warm water will get the stubborn stuff. No vigorous strokes if you trying to avoid scratches. Set on towel to dry.
how to clean LEGO sets
Key Considerations for Cleaning LEGO Sets
Disassemble if Necessary: If the set is particularly dirty or has been played with extensively, consider disassembling it into smaller sections for easier cleaning.
Use Mild Soap and Water: For most cleaning, a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap works well. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic.
Soft Brush or Cloth: Use a soft-bristled brush (like a toothbrush) or a microfiber cloth to gently scrub the bricks. This helps remove dirt without scratching the surface.
Rinse Thoroughly: After cleaning, rinse the LEGO pieces under warm running water to remove any soap residue. Ensure that no soap remains, as it can leave a film.
Air Dry Completely: Lay the pieces out on a towel or drying rack and allow them to air dry completely before reassembling. Avoid using a hairdryer or direct heat, as this can warp the plastic.
Avoid Submerging Electronics: If your LEGO set includes electronic components (like motors or lights), avoid submerging these parts in water. Instead, wipe them down with a damp cloth.
Recommendation: For regular maintenance, consider using a soft brush to remove dust and debris without needing a full wash. This can help keep your LEGO sets looking fresh without the need for more intensive cleaning.
