Clearing Cache on iPhone
On an iPhone, clearing cache is not as straightforward as it is on Android devices. For Safari, you can clear the browser's cache by going to Settings > Safari and selecting "Clear History and Website Data" [1:1]. This will remove temporary files, cookies, and website data, but it will also sign you out of any websites
[2:1].
App-Specific Cache Clearing
For individual apps, the option to clear cache directly is not available for all apps. Some apps may have this feature in their settings, but many do not [1:2],
[4:5]. In such cases, the recommended method is to delete and reinstall the app. This process removes the app's cache and temporary files, giving you a fresh start without losing important data that is usually saved in iCloud or within the app itself
[2:3],
[3:1].
Offloading Apps
Another approach is to offload apps. This option allows you to remove the app while keeping its documents and data. When you reinstall the app, your data is restored [3:1],
[5:4]. To offload an app, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the app, and choose "Offload App."
Restarting Your iPhone
A simple yet effective way to clear some temporary system cache is by restarting your iPhone. This can help resolve minor glitches and improve performance without the need for more complex interventions [2:4],
[4:4].
Limitations and Considerations
It's important to note that Apple does not provide a universal cache-clearing option across all apps, unlike Android devices [4:1]. The ability to clear cache depends largely on the app developers and whether they include this feature in their apps
[4:2]. Additionally, some users find it inconvenient to delete and reinstall apps frequently, especially if app settings need to be customized again after reinstallation
[3:7],
[4:7].
Guys, this is my first experience with IOS and I want to know how to clear the cache on the iPhone.
Depends on the App. Some have it in Settings, some in the App, and others not at all.
i just offload apps and then reinstall again
For what app? Each app has a cache. You can do it in Safari (iPhones default internet web browser) in settings and apps, then click Safari and click clear history and website data. It will sign you out of any websites.
On iPhone there isn’t really a clear cache option in every app like on Android. For most apps you just uninstall it to clear cache then reinstall.
I’m not gonna bore you with a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo. Instead, I’ll break it down into simple steps for clearing cache in different places like Safari, individual apps, and even clearing up junks that take up a large amount of storage space. Whether you’re trying to free up space or just want your phone to stop acting like it’s running on fumes, I’ve got you covered.
So, grab your iPhone, and let’s get to work. Your phone’s about to feel like it just got a shot of espresso. Let’s go!
1. Clear your Browser’s Cache
So, Safari on your iPhone is kind of a hoarder, it stores temporary files, cookies, and website data to speed up your browsing, which is great until it all piles up and starts slowing everything down. Over time, this junk can make Safari feel laggy, eats up your storage, and just generally mess with your phone’s performance. The fix? Clear your browser cache. It’s like hitting the reset button, ditching all the outdated crap so Safari can load fresh content faster and run smoother. Here’s how you do it:
Pros:
✅ Clears up a ton of space by getting rid of old site data, cookies, and temp files.
✅ Helps websites load faster with up-to-date content.
✅ Boosts browser performance, so less lag when you're surfing.
Cons:
❌ Logs you out of sites, so you’ll have to log back in.
❌ Erases your browsing history, which might be annoying if you use it a lot.
If your iPhone feels slow or Safari’s dragging its feet, clearing the browser cache is a simple fix. It’s an easy way to keep everything running smoothly and free up some storage while you’re at it. Definitely worth doing if your phone’s acting up.
2. Clear Specific App’s Cache
App caches are basically temporary files that help apps run smoother and load stuff like images faster. But over time, they pile up and can start causing problems like taking up too much storage, slowing things down, or even making apps freeze. The good news? Clearing an app’s cache can usually fix all that. Here’s how to do it:
Heads up: not all apps let you clear their cache directly. If that’s the case, your only options are to offload the app or straight-up delete it and reinstall it. Yeah, it’s kind of annoying, but it gets the job done!
Pros:
✅ Fixes app glitches, freezing, and slow loading times like a champ.
✅ Clears up space without messing with your other apps.
✅ Lets you pick and choose which apps to deal with based on storage hogging.
Cons:
❌ Not every app plays nice—some don’t let you clear cache directly.
❌ For those stubborn apps, you’ll have to delete and reinstall them. Not fun.
❌ Any local data not backed up? Poof, gone.
Clearing an app’s cache is a solid move if your phone’s acting weird like running out of space, freezing up, or glitching. It’s an easy way to keep your iPhone running like a champ and stop it from getting stuffed with junk files you don’t need. Regularly managing this can help your phone stay snappy and avoid those “storage almost full” headaches.
4. Reinstall Apps
Not every app lets you clear out its cache, so if you want a fresh start, your best bet is to delete and reinstall it. By doing this, you get a clean version of the app without all the junk slowing it down, and most of your important data is usually saved in iCloud or within the app itself. It’s a solid trick for fixing performance issues like glitches or freezing in specific apps. Here’s how you can do it:
Go to Settings.
Pros:
✅ Wipes out all the junk app data for a fresh start.
✅ Most important app data is usually backed up, so no major freak-outs.
✅ Great fix for apps that keep crashing or acting up.
Cons:
❌ Takes forever, especially for apps with a ton of data.
❌ Say goodbye to any local data that wasn’t saved.
❌ You’ll need Wi-Fi to reinstall everything, hello, waiting game.
3. Restart your iPhone
Restarting your iPhone is hands down the easiest way to clear out temporary system junk and give your phone a little refresh. It’s like hitting the reset button on minor glitches and common issues without diving into any complicated fixes. Plus, it can bring back that smooth performance you’re used to.
Pros:
✅ Easiest and fastest way to clear out system cache and refresh your device.
✅ Fixes random glitches and boosts speed with zero hassle.
✅ No risk of losing your stuff or jumping through extra hoops.
Cons:
❌ Only clears system files, so app-specific junk still sticks around.
❌ Won’t help if your storage or lag problems are on another level.
Sometimes, all it takes to get your iPhone back on track is a quick restart. It’s a simple move that clears out all the temporary junk, fixes those little glitches, and helps keep things running smoothly. It’s low-effort but can seriously make a difference when your phone starts acting up.
5. Clear Messages Cache
Clearing out your Messages cache is a great way to free up storage on your iPhone. Over time, all those photos, videos, and files start piling up, and they can slow things down and eat up space. Want to clear it out? Here’s how you can do it:
Go to Settings.
Tap on General.
Select iPhone Storage.
Tap on “Review Large Attachments” at the suggestions section.
Review and Select the attachments that you no longer need, then tap the Trash Button.
Pros:
✅ Clears out big attachments and old messages in a snap, freeing up tons of space.
✅ Stops unnecessary clutter from bogging down your device.
✅ Makes your Messages app look way more organized.
Cons:
❌ Going through everything manually can feel like a full-time job.
❌ Accidentally deleting something important? Yikes.
❌ The buildup will happen again, so get ready for round two eventually.
Have an Iphone 16. Trying to find a way to clear the cache files because it’s eating up my storage. I don’t have any offline content downloaded in any of the apps.
The other day I asked myself the same question. I went into the apps that took up the most amount of space (aside from WhatsApp and Messages) and "offload app" seemed to clear the cache. Once it offloads, re-install and you're good to go. It cleared about 5GB of Instagram and 3GB for Twitter which were my highest.
you can clear cache on the twitter app. everything is sandboxed on ios so you can only clear cache on the app itself if they let you to, and twitter is one of those that lets you to iirc
they clear automatically when you are running out of storage,, you can also delete that app and install it again
No, they don't always clear when running low. Mine is stuck with high storage and will not free any more.
It is to delete the app and reinstall it, in the case of YouTube you can check if there are downloads in your profile. Also check if automatic downloads are activated
I have a monthly habit of deleting and reinstalling FB and Instagram.
You need to customize your settings again after reinstalling Meta apps as they do not persist after uninstalling.
Oh my god, i just got 2015 flashbacks looking at Clash of Clans🥲🥲😭
Basically just delete the data without deleting the app itself. It gets annoying to delete and reinstall after a while.
this is a great question, but the only way I've come across doing this successfully was in Settings where there was an option to clear cache when app is launched...i'm sorry but I don't remember which app this was for. So the app developer has to allow this and turn it on for the toggle to be available in Settings in the first place.
I wish we had it like Android where you can do this easily for any app in settings. Pretty inconvenient for us iOS users.
Oh, no problem!! If you remember, please let me know!! And yeah, I wish they gave us that option too. It gets annoying to delete and reinstall.
i’ll let you know , no worries. 😎
I was wondering the same thing. I let Instagram refresh in the background, it grew to 20 GB of space usage. I ended up deleting and reinstalling and now back to a lot less and disables its BGR.
I know Snapchat has delete cache option, so it depends on the apps.
Oh, good to know that’s a decent fix!! Will disable my BGRs now.
Restarting the phone can help clear a little bit, but deleting and reinstalling is the best way for iPhone.
Entirely depends on the app
As far as I know, we’re stuck doing it that way right now
That’s what I was afraid of. Huh. I wonder how long it’ll take Apple to add this feature. Android has had it for years.
It was an option before on IOS 13 below if I’m not mistaken
Apple doesn’t want us to have too much control of anything Android is the opposite side of that coin
Apple will never add the option. A big selling point of iPhones is that "they just work" and by adding an option to clear cache, apple would be showing people that sometimes it doesn't just work.
Unfourently I believe this is only possible by deleting said App(s) and reinstalling this automatically deletes stores cache files,I use the web versions of some of these apps IE youtube because of the safari adblocking capabilities.
Delete app
Even then data is retained in apple
No it's not. Only some of the data (that is stored on iCloud or Keychain) survives the app removal.
Iirc data is retained
Only if you select Offload option instead of Delete.
Because I think it only stores data in your iCloud.
That’s because the Keychain isn’t affected by uninstalling apps.
Apple software is so bloated.
Yes with Vinegar extension. Or use DuckDuckGo browser
I use an add blocker called “AdBlock Pro”.
There is no single way, you must enter each app and check how to clear the cache, some do not have that option. Also be careful because some erase all usage information.
Dear iPhone Reddit Community,
I already know what everyone is thinking, offloading wont delete documents and data right?
" Please hear me out "
But the fact is, it does delete all "unwanted" documents and data
The Steps - Settings - General - Iphone Storage - Go to the App - Offload App - Reinstall App
For example, if its Instagram, and if the documents and data shows around 5 GB, even after offloading and re-installing the app it would still show "5GB"
But here's the twist, as soon as you go back from the menu, tap iphone storage again, tap Instagram in storage menu, you will see everything has cleared except your login data and important data
The 5GB will be down to mere 200 MB or something, i think the reason is when you go back the storage re-calculates everything
This method works for every apps and it can work just like how " Clear Cache " works in Android
But i cant understand , why Apple says Documents and data wont be cleared. I think they should re-write what happens under offload apps
Please tell me if anyone found this really useful. If this is already been known, please write it in comments and i will make sure my post is deleted
God damnit apple, just let us clear caches manually. This is one of their more grating decisions and something where their "it just works" approach does not work
If they let you do that, you wouldn’t think about paying $200 for a storage upgrade next time you buy a phone…
But if it fills up your storage, maybe you’ll buy a larger capacity model next time and give them more money!
There is also iCloud Drive on PC that sometimes runs into an issue where it stops syncing and I just need a button to force it to sync again but Apple says nah you have to completely redownload everything. There used to be a command line but their product manager thinks it is unacceptable to use it so they removed it.
I agree it clears some cache that builds up
Thank you so much. How much did it clear for you?
Please remember to close settings app and come back again to check the actual used data after doing the steps
Yaaay!
Did the storage recalculate the same time or did you had to close the settings app for recalculation
I had to close the settings app for this. But it saves me more than 5 GB in multiple Apps.
Looks like It is very much dependent on the app, reddit seems to work but majority of other apps doesnt seem to have an effect. My best guess is how the devs for each app structures the files and cache data.
Can i please know which apps it doesn't work ?
Have you tried closing the settings app for recalculation, seems like just going back doesnt make it recalculate
OneDrive was a bit of a mixed bag for me. It reported 2 GB of documents and data, after offloading and reinstalling and checking again, it only brought it down to 1.93 GB.
1,19
I installed instagram. Open it one time. Close all apps, Even the settings. Go back to setting, refresh the storage section and here the storage
The app is currently taking up 12GB of space on my phone 😅 I’d like to free up some space but I haven’t gotten the prompt to clear cache in a long time. Is there a way to manually do it on the app? Or do I just keep waiting?
You just have to uninstall and reinstall, it will still have your progress.
But i don't think clearing cache helps anyhow. It was occupying 15gb after clearing cache only it's showing 14.59gb. Idk what to do . 🤡
The app's data storage and cache are 2 different things! (you'll be able to note the difference in storage listed under each section. Just be sure to be logged in + note your UID before clearing your data storage esp since it essentially acts like a reinstall)
If you have an Android, just hold the app > when the banner appears, press 'app info' > press 'storage' > press 'clear cache'
Or, you could delete the app and re install
Oh man. Mine was taking up 20GB and I solved the problem accidentally by getting a new phone haha.
But if you delete the app and reinstall (iPhone) it should clear the cache. Just make sure you saved your UID and logged into something (I have apple as my log in for my main)
I literally just did this because the app was also taking up 12GB on my phone. You should be able to do it manually from your phone settings. Make sure that your Romance Club account is signed in to something before doing it (I think the options are FB or Google) and just in case, save your player UID (settings cog in top right > Tools > Copy UID) somewhere.
Your phone probably has “Storage” or a category like that in your settings. From there I was able to Clear Data and Clear Cache for the app. It’s at 250MB now but I expect it’ll go up a bit once I open some chapters.
Thank you so much!! I have an iPhone so I did the first steps you listed, then just deleted and reinstalled the app. It worked and I can finally update my phone 😭
This made me check and mine is 33.59 GB my goodness 🫢
My phone wouldn’t update because RC was taking up so much space 😅 I had no idea.
And I thought that mine was high!
(15.42GB)
Is there an easy way to get rid of the locally stored „data“? I really don’t need the last x months/ years present on my phone
Probably will have to delete the app and reinstall
i guess that means re-pairing the watch(es)
Dear Community of iPhone,
I already what everyone is thinking, offloading wont delete documents and data right?
( iOS itself says it wont delete the data when you tap it )
But the fact is, it does delete all "unwanted" documents and data

true, I do this and it’s working it just need a one button to press offload and reinstall multiple apps
Apple needs to take a page from Android and have a dedicated clear cache and app reset button.
Yes so true. This also means that iOS can actually delete unwanted cache. They should just add a "Clear Cache" option for users
bro snapchat is actually crazy with its cache usage, it was taking up 60 gigs on my brothers phone, although there is a button inside the app to clear the cache if I remember correctly.
i think with snap they've implemented a "clear cache" button in settings under "clean data"
meh, that cache is pre-cached media... allsocial apps do it: when you watch a video it pre-loads the next 10 or so so that the "experience" is smooth when you swite to the next.
it will fill up quickly again in like 2 or three days... that effort is useless.
I was keep doing this for my Facebook app every 2-3 months and reducing the total size from 7GB to only 500MB
I thought I would be called stupid for sharing it but thanks someone did.
Simply delete the app and use Safari. Less tracking that way too
does offloading snapchat clear the snaps i have saved?
no, offloading literally changes nothing, it doesn’t even log you out.
this isn’t a new feature tho, i use to offload all my apps so i had storage to update my phone & then id just click them to download back after 😭
The reason why they say the Documents and Important data won’t be cleared is because there are specific storage locations considered important and backed up.
What you are seeing is the temporary directories used for caching being wiped as they aren’t backed up when you reload the app.
as long as it ends up freeing system data space... :D
Unlike Android, iOS doesn't have an option to delete cache or clear some stuff. As an avid user, how can I avoid useless files from building up on iOS and keep its performance running fresh and smooth?
Or is it useful to perform a full reset once in a while?
Absolutely not! The only time a factory reset should be done is if your iPhone is frozen and/or an Apple support representative recommends it. I have been an iPhone user for at least 11 years and I have only had to do a reset twice.
There is a non-destructive reset that cleans up memory and speeds up operations. It won’t destroy data and often doesn’t shut down open apps. Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold down the Power button until you see the Apple logo. Along the way you will see a “slide to power off” prompt—ignore it and keep holding the power button. When you see the Apple logo the phone is restarting, and you’ll have to enter your passcode to open the phone
For real? Does it have the same effect as a factory reset?
No, a factory reset would completely wipe the phone and you'd have to load apps and settings from a backup. The non-destructive reset does help with "misbehavior", slowdowns, and clears up some memory problems. So, benefits without any real downside.
Probably don't need a factory reset. The OS is actually pretty good about memory usage. The apps on the other hand can be sloppy. I do sometimes offload and reload apps that are memory hogs or even uninstall/reinstall.
I did it yesterday for the first time in 3 years on my ipad pro m1 and iphone 12 pro max. They feel like brand new again.
Replacing the battery also helps a lot.
While ios might be smarter than windows, i imagine that all softwares will be bugging after years of use nonetheless. My experience is that the phone feels much better after the reset.
Did you happen to replace the battery before this factory reset?
I did the battery 1 month ago. Impact was good i have to say but somehow ios still felt buggy (irresponsible tap to wake, slow transitions, some apps crashing). After the reset it just works like new
