How to Fix a Phone That Won't Turn On

When your phone refuses to power on, it can be a frustrating experience. Here are some steps and considerations based on community discussions that might help you troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Hard Reset: For many phones, performing a hard reset can resolve issues where the device appears dead. For iPhones, this involves pressing the volume up button, then the volume down button, and holding the lock button until the Apple logo appears [5]. This method has worked for several users who faced similar issues [5:1][5:3].

  2. Charge the Device: Ensure the phone is charged. Plug it into a reliable power source and leave it for at least an hour before attempting to turn it on again [2:2].

  3. Check for Physical Damage: Inspect the phone for any visible damage, especially around the charging port. Debris or damage can prevent the phone from charging properly [1:2][1:8].

  4. Button Combinations: For Android devices, try holding the power button along with the volume up button for about 15 seconds to see if it restarts [4:1].

Advanced Considerations

  1. Screen Issues: If the phone vibrates or makes sounds but the screen remains black, the display might be faulty. In such cases, visiting a repair shop could be necessary [3:1][3:3].

  2. Battery or Internal Components: Sometimes, the battery or internal components like the motherboard or Charge IC chip may be faulty [5:9]. A professional diagnosis can determine if these parts need replacement.

  3. Repair Shops: If basic troubleshooting fails, consider taking the phone to a certified repair shop. They can perform diagnostics to identify hardware issues, though repairs, especially involving the mainboard, can be costly [5:6][5:7].

Preventive Measures

To avoid future issues, ensure your phone is regularly updated, handle it carefully to prevent physical damage, and consider using protective cases. Regularly clean the charging port to prevent dust accumulation, which can interfere with charging [2:3].

If you're unable to resolve the issue yourself and the cost of repair is prohibitive, it might be time to consider purchasing a new device, especially if the phone is older [1:1][3:5].

Did the screen break recently? Did it charge after that ?

It looks like the screen damage stopped the phone from charging. You have to get this inspected at the service centre.

It charged regularly for the 2 months that it was working.

To be honest, you should have gotten the screen replaced, it sounds like some shards or other debris may have messed the charging part somewhere out damaged the main board.

As far as I know, the service centres only replace the entire mainboard, at least according to the out of warranty parts list in my country. Mainboard replacement is almost the entire cost of the phone, at least in my market, not economical to replace, you also have to add a display.

MY PHONE SCREEN WONT TURN ON

Posted by So_ii · in r/verizon · 2 years ago

Okay so basically my phone screen wont turn on. It's not broken or cracked, I was on social media and had to do something so I clicked the power button to turn the screen off so it wasn't left on when I wasn't using it as one does. I came back and my phone would not turn on. I tried to restart it and it would do the vibrating as if it was working but the screen itself wont show anything. It's fully charged so it's not because the battery is dead but I left it alone and left it on charge all night and still nothing but when I plugged it back in yesterday, the white bolt popped up on the screen to tell me it was charging but after that, it still wont turn on. It didn't overheat or freeze either. I asked my parents about it and they think the internal screen is dead and needs to be changed. If anyone knows how much that would cost please let me know, or if anyone knows what's wrong with it.

I have a Moto Z3

Fix for iPhone that won’t turn on

Posted by jbtuckr · in r/iphone · 2 years ago

Hi Everyone, I work at a cell phone repair shop, and over the past few weeks I have noticed a very high volume of people coming in with an iPhone 11/13/14 where the phone will be completely off and showing no signs of life, and hard resetting it wont work either. I'm here with a solution:

Plug in the device to power, then perform the hard reset (pressing the up volume button once, pressing the down volume once, then holding the lock button until something shows up on the screen. (Note that the 'hard reset' doesn't erase any of your data, it is simply effectively like unplugging the battery and plugging it back in)

I'm not sure what Apple recently did on the back end that has caused this issue to pop up so frequently, and why only doing a hard reset while plugged in works but yeah. It also recently happened to my iPad Pro 11" 3rd Gen and my mom's iPad Air 4. I have seen it most commonly on iPhone 11 series, and regular iPhone 13's and 14's. It's also really weird because when i plug any of these devices into my amperage meter, they will show that they aren't drawing any power, which is usually an indicator of a completely dead device. Even weirder is that my ipad, as well as a customer's phone today were completely dead battery-wise but both devices still wouldnt accept a charge or have the dead battery logo come up until i did the plug in reboot.

TLDR: If your iPhone is not coming on and your carrier says you just need a new phone (which they keep telling people), it's probably not broken, and don't worry.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but this has not worked on my mother's iPhone 13 pro. Yesterday it randomly shut off and won't turn back on, I tried hard resetting it about 20 times now without success.....The charging port is clean and the cable works fine, I tried plugging it into my pc as well and it won't recognize it at all.

Chris-The-Lucario · 11 months ago

Nope! I brought it to two different Apple authorized repair shops, one wouldn't do anything at all before I paid 400-500 euros for it. The other checked with some device to see if the phone received a charge, which it did, but the screen did not show anything at all, they told me that the mainboard might have died and it would cost about the same amount to get it repaired as the other shop asked for...

In the end my mother said it's not worth getting it repaired and she bought a new phone

Hi there, I am having this issue on my iPhone 13 Max Pro. When it turned off it was at 90% battery. I have a usb adapter to check current draw and it’s “drawing“ 4mA, but every now and then will jump to 38mA and then back down (This happens when it’s just plugged in and when I do the button press sequence). It’s been about 5 hours now, and I’ve tried holding the button for 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 10 minutes, and nothing. Any idea what repair stores would be able to if the device won’t even draw a proper charge?
Thanks so much!

2 upvotes on reddit
PermissionWilling482 · 1 year ago

Just an update on my situation for anyone else - repair store took the phone apart and tested everything they could and said the issue wasn’t power related & the phone would need a new motherboard. So they told me to sell it for parts & get a new phone. Really disappointed as the phone was only 2 years old and in perfect condition otherwise.
I’ve seen a few videos of problem points that might be as simple as replacing a blow capacitor, so I might give it a go at checking that out.

jbtuckr · OP · 1 year ago

I would check to see if maybe the battery needs to be replaced. A lot of times, if the phone isn't pulling the proper charge, it'll be that the battery has gone bad or the Charge IC chip has gone bad

You aren't understanding. Just because electricity is passing through it doesn't mean it's not doing other damage. When you use a broken cable you run the risk of improper amounts of electricity to push through.

I'm sure it'll charge things, but with any surges you run a risk of frying your electronics.

This cord is all taped up, my assumption because it's faulty/exposed wiring/etc.

Seems like you may have fried something in the phone that is integral to it's operation.

Rocketkt69 · 4 years ago

It's either the botched cable you are using, or the phone is stuck in a boot loop. We need more context. Have you tried unlocking/modding your software? Have you tried holding the power button and volume down buttons for about 20 seconds?

I used to work in smartphone and PC repair, keep me updated I might be able to help you.

By the way, please throw that cable away; USB cables have two power pins and the rest are data pins, if the data pins are damaged or power leaks into them, the cable will still charge because the power pins are fine but it'll harm your phone; best case scenario you corrupt your firmware worst case scenario you fry your hardware.

how to fix a phone that won't turn on

Here are some key steps to troubleshoot a phone that won't turn on:

  1. Charge the Phone:

    • Ensure the phone is charged. Use a working charger and cable, and let it charge for at least 15-30 minutes.
    • Check for any signs of charging (like a battery icon or LED light).
  2. Force Restart:

    • For most smartphones, press and hold the power button and volume down button simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds. This can reset the device.
  3. Inspect the Charging Port:

    • Check for debris or damage in the charging port. Clean it gently with a soft brush or compressed air.
  4. Try a Different Charger:

    • Use a different charger and cable to rule out issues with the original charger.
  5. Remove Accessories:

    • Remove any cases, screen protectors, or accessories that might be interfering with the power button or charging.
  6. Boot into Safe Mode:

    • If the phone turns on but is unresponsive, try booting into safe mode (usually by holding the power button and then tapping and holding "Power Off" until the safe mode option appears).
  7. Check for Hardware Issues:

    • If the phone still won’t turn on, there may be a hardware issue. Look for signs of physical damage or water exposure.
  8. Seek Professional Help:

    • If none of the above steps work, it may be time to consult a professional technician or the manufacturer’s customer service for further assistance.

Takeaway: Start with the simplest solutions like charging and force restarting. If those don’t work, proceed to check for hardware issues or seek professional help.
