TL;DR: Subnautica does not feature traditional weapon crafting like some other games. Instead, focus on gathering blueprints and using tools for survival.
Understanding Weapon Availability
Subnautica is a survival game that emphasizes exploration and resource management over combat. Unlike other games, it doesn't have a system for crafting traditional weapons like guns or swords. The game focuses more on tools and vehicles to aid in exploration and defense against the environment rather than direct combat [5:1].
Crafting Tools and Equipment
While you can't craft conventional weapons, you can create various tools and equipment essential for survival. To build structures and equipment, you'll need to find and use the Habitat Builder tool, which allows you to construct bases and other necessary items. This tool can be found by scanning fragments in specific areas like the Twisty Bridges [3:1]
[3:2].
Blueprints and Exploration
The game's progression relies heavily on finding blueprints scattered throughout the world. These blueprints are obtained by scanning objects with the Scanner tool. Once scanned, these blueprints allow you to fabricate new items at your base or mobile vehicle bay. For instance, certain storyline items like the purple tablet can be crafted if you lose or miss them during exploration [4:1].
Focus on Survival and Exploration
Since Subnautica is centered around survival, players should focus on crafting tools that enhance their ability to explore and gather resources. Essential tools include the Scanner, Repair Tool, and Survival Knife. Vehicles such as the Seamoth and Cyclops also play a crucial role in navigating the ocean depths safely.
Conclusion
In summary, while Subnautica does not offer weapon crafting in the traditional sense, it provides a rich crafting system focused on survival tools and exploration aids. Players should prioritize gathering blueprints, utilizing the Habitat Builder, and exploring the environment to progress through the game.
Saw the new update drop and decided to jump back in. Does the weapon crafting system apply to bows, guns, staves, or unarmed? If so I can't see to find those recipes.
Also I've noticed spear is in the weapon crafting menu, but can't craft one due to spear core and pommel not being craftable. Is this a known bug? Or am I missing something?
Just melee weapons for Weaponsmithing! Guns will still be an engineering weapons and bows and crossbows will likely be added at a later time as a special crafting type as well.
The spear issue is a bug and will be fixed in the hotfix!
Was just going to make a post about the spear bug! Also it's impossible to craft some components, e.g it shows 0/3 copper or iron and you can't craft it even if you have enough. Sometimes it also just doesn't show required materials at all in the crafting panel.
Great game btw!
I’ve got a fix coming for all those components! 😁
I was looking for info how I can make bows in the game and found this post. Shame I can't yet but glad it's coming. Just wanted to reply to say that I absolutely adore the crafting system. It's great that I can make even low-tier weapons like copper weapons good by doing well in the minigame.
I just bought the game a couple days ago and I'm loving it for what it is so far! Keep up the great work, you clearly have a good vision of the game.
Aw, yeah, no bow crafting just yet! I’m glad you’re enjoying the game!! 😁 (Be sure to drop a good review if you feel the game deserves it!! Hahahah)
Thx for the response, I'll let you cook a bit more and check in again later!
Do you know what kind of shorts word the Smith guy wants for the quest? Ive made like 4 swords and none of them work :(
This quest was buggy before the smithy update, I imagine it's completely broken now.
I got a response from the dev, he said a fix is in the works. So I'll just unfollow that one for now...!
There are two main modes in StW: the main areas, and Ventures. Ventures has a separate inventory, and you can't craft weapons, only traps.
In the main areas (you'll only have access to Stonewood at this point) you can craft weapons using schematics. You can view these schematics in the Armory tab.
Like others have said here; you can’t craft guns in ventures. Have to pick them up
Did you load into the Frozen Fjords Venture zone? That's the only reason why. Otherwise you'd have a few starter schematics and as you progress through the game you earn more schematics
If you've gone into the Frosty Fjords Ventures zone (or any other Ventures zone rather), you don't, you'll need to rely on Lady Luck for weapons
Leave ventures and go into stone wood, plankerton to craft a weapon out of the schematics you currently have
I scanned the multipurpose room and have the nesesery materials but I can’t craft it, why is this?
... potentially a stupid question, but you are using your habitat builder tool, right?
I just started the game and know nothing about it, so I have no idea what that is
Look around the Twisty Bridges area. There's a databox around there at about ~120m deep and a builder tool will be nearby. That'll let you build bases.
You need to find a habitat builder blueprint (then fabricate it). You can find them in different locations, but the easiest is on the island surrounded by smoke vents. You can't build a building from a fabricator. Too big.
I scanned a purple tablet outside the precursor gun and can now make one, what's the use for this?
There should be at least... 3-4 tablets around and under the island. Explore thoroughly.
Thanks.
There are a limited number of purple tablets in the game world. If, for some reason, some player decided to throw all his purple tablets into a garbage can, or if this unfortunate player is phenomenally bad at exploring and thus didn't pick up any purple tablets, then said player would be out of luck if he ever encounters a situation where he'd need a purple tablet to progress in the storyline. Thus, the game allows you to craft more tablets.
Ah now it makes sense thanks for the help.
you will see... just go on
Meant like I keep getting recipes and I don’t know how to use them
As long as you finish the level you are in, the blueprints will be added to the list of available items the collector offers (in the passageway between each level). You use the cells you’ve collected to unlock each weapon/skill etc. the first time you unlock the weapon/skill, the collector will drop it for you to use then and there. After that it will be added to the list of random weapons that appear throughout your future runs.
Minecells ahh post.
You just bring the recipes to the collector, should be In the passage way to any new level.
What
This ain't Minecraft bro.
You have multiple ways to unlock weapons, it's either from secret entrance or lore rooms or dropped from enemies by a low percent chance.
The affixes themselves aren't actually that hard with recomb, the problem is getting them on a 30% base. Max quality Karui Mauls seem to be around 5d on trade so I believe it's possible to do the recomb cheaper than a mirror as well, but getting the enchant to 49% will increase the price to "just mirror it". If you're fine with 20% quality and like 40% enchant, it should be doable in around 100-200d. You could consider getting 30% bases but you'll probably need to buy out the whole market; the steps are identical.
Step 1: Make bases
Buy or farm i84+ karui mauls, ideally ones that already have an influence. If they're not already shaper, use harvest to swap influence type. If using 30% bases, you'll probably need to add influence yourself with conqueror exalts.
Step 2: Carpal tunnel
Alt spam the bases for any desired mod. T1 % phys and hybrid phys are much, much rarer than the others, so get a few of the others and then just roll for those.
Step 3: Make 2-mods
Recomb your bases, just the magics if normal quality or regal for 30%, hoping to regal the mod type that isn't desired (so suffix if you have flat phys t1). For 30%, you then multimod + craft exclusive mods to get 6 mods of the desired type. Once you have two good affixes on a single item, lock prefix/suffix and scour to get clean 2-mods.
On the initial attempt, try to get two 2-mods which together have all mods except max endurance, since you can often save bad regals with cannot roll attacks. After the initial attempt, focus on getting the 1-2 mods that you need to add.
Step 4: Recomb the 2-mods
Craft multimod, exclusives and an aspect if it fits. Hopefully you can fill so both bases have six total mods. Then recomb them for around 60-70% chance of a 4-mod and otherwise a guaranteed 3-mod.
Step 5: Add the missing mod(s)
Craft another 2-mod which has all of the desired mods you're now missing, then craft multimod + exclusives on both bases. Should be around 25% to succeed on the final recomb if you manage to get 6 mods on both items.
Edit: formatting
It’s probably more sane to go for 3 prefixes and 1 suffix (either attack speed or crit) via recomb. Then cannot roll attack mods and exalt/annul to fish for endurance charge. Then craft the last mod
If you're going for 30% quality I agree, but otherwise I think recombing the 5-mod is actually cheaper than metacrafting the 4-mod.
It's 1/75 to hit +1 endurance on an exalt and 50-50 to annul the new mod or cannot roll attacks, so 80+d on average including the exalts. The recomb for a 4-mod has roughly 75% success rate, and while you must hit it for metacrafting it's actually fine to use bricked 3-mods for recombing the 5-mod. Getting the bases for said recomb is roughly 10d (so 5d each) for clean bases, alt spam and metamods, so you get roughly eight attempts at the 5-mod recomb for the cost of one metacraft, cancelling the cost of recombing a 4-mod against the cost of alt-spamming additional bases for step 5. Since it's roughly a 25% success rate that means the recomb costs half as much on average. Buying 30% quality bases almost triples the cost of bases though, which makes it roughly equal.
I dont know but if i had to guess, finish prefixes with phys dmg essences on shaper base, lock suff and reforge influence. Then either lock suff and augment crit or veiled orb.

240% phys is T1% + T1 hybrid, and 40-80 is T1 flat (higher than essence). Your guess was decent, but we actually use recombinators for this.
Yeah my bad, i somehow thought you cant recomb influence lol. But yeah, pure phys is better and cheaper with recomb and far less painful to hit lol.
I have found it's hard for me to get better weapons for combat. What do I need to discover in order to create the weapons I see some of you guys using on this subreddit?
Kill bugs, analyse their parts at science stations. What weapons you have at the moment?
Don't be shy to look up the guides and the wiki.
I found that the Red Ant Club carried me for most of the early game.
It helps to know where you are in the game and what labs you’ve completed
This is wiki/youtube guide game.
There are a lot of layers to advancing in this game that are not always obvious or easy to find.
If you want to advance and you're not sure what to do you’re gonna have to look a lot of stuff up.
Sooo each set of weapons is locked behind a tier of tools, and or chips from labs, id try to finish labs first, including optional ones. If you are struggling with an area, use peep.r to find weaknesses to damage types, some require special gear like a gas mask or bubble helmet or a dandelion tuff (if you cut down a bunch a trinket can drop for a permanent tuff)
Highly recommend having multiple weapon types for different types of bugs.
Bosses are mostly about being outfitted and learning how to deal with the fight, best general advice is to clear adds and bring lots of bandages and or smoothies especially on higher difficulties.
You might be talking about special weapons like pepper flake, some of these require using the remix.r which requires beating pretty much everything.
If you can unlock candy staves, a tick sword and a shield, you can deal with pretty much any enemy. Broodmother club requires beating a boss but it's great for fighting things with a shell like ox beetles or ladybirds, I use sword and shield to deal with mosquitos, spicy staff for thinks like ants, frost staff for fire ants or ladybird larva, a rusty salty javelin is good vs termites or a sour staff and kiting them around.
Crossbow is pretty good mid game for stuff but you have to learn when to block and when to attack.
Mutations Come at I think 40/100/200 kills, you can kill mites to level this up quicker but they can make weapons more effective.
Idk where and how to craft weapons i only can make armor can someone explain??
That's the cool part, they removed weapon crafting :)
Now, you have to do 5 weeks of weekly quests, finishing the free hunt pass and farm seasonal events for a weapon (minimum time needed: 4 weeks + 1 hour into the 5th week).
That’s the neat part, you don’t.
When does the magic begin? 😂😂😭
they removed it completely and i hate it
You’re gonna want to sit down when we tell you this
Press tab click on the second icon on the top of the pda I believe it’s a wrench. Then scroll until you find the knife and click on it.
Question two, why does Robin hold the knife so haphazardly
It’s hard to swim 1 handed and be ready for stabby stabby cut cut 😂
This takes a while to get to it but it’s totally worth it
Did you try to unpin it in the pda?
Because you pinned it
You pinned the recipe. Open up your recipes in your pda, and you can unpin it. You can also pin and unpin recipes by right clicking the item's icon when the fabricator interface is open.
Do anyone know were u go to make weapons as in forge or get said recipe for ? I got ingots it's just how do u then make
You have to open Hephaestus's forge, which is a quest he should show up at your house to give you. Not sure just yet exactly what triggers it but he always showed up for me on his birthday. It may be friendship based.
Thanks
How to craft weapons in Subnautica
Key Considerations for Crafting Weapons in Subnautica
Available Weapons: In Subnautica, the primary weapons you can craft are the Knife, Stasis Rifle, and Propulsion Cannon. Each serves different purposes in combat and exploration.
Materials Needed:
Blueprints: Ensure you have the blueprints for the weapons you want to craft. You can find these by scanning fragments in the game world.
Fabricator: All crafting is done at the Fabricator, which you can find in your Lifepod or build in your base.
Combat Strategy: While weapons can help defend against aggressive creatures, consider using stealth or avoidance tactics as well, especially for larger predators.
Recommendation: Start with the Knife, as it requires minimal resources and is essential for gathering materials and defending yourself against smaller threats. As you progress, focus on crafting the Stasis Rifle for crowd control and the Propulsion Cannon for manipulating objects and creatures.
