It likely won't be hard to get a hold of the software, it's just that future development of the software may be in jeopardy. It requires constant updates to keep up with YouTube's changes. Most developers are (rightfully) wary of getting in the RIAA's crosshairs.

It won't because they own the domain and would fight it in court. The Youtube-DL team doesn't own GitHub so have to wait for the process to go through. They will, eventually, be re-instated on GitHub.

You can use free web tools like Downr to download without having to worry about installing any apps or pay walls. If you don't mind little learning curve and command line executions, then yt-dlp would definitely be recommended too. Recently one of our folks have figured out a way to download videos using IDM. We will be discussing them here as well.

1) Download using downr.org

This would be as straight forward and quick option you can think of. Navigate to downr.org and simply paste the URL. Hit Download button. Please check the first snapshot attached.

Post that, select the file format and do right click and 'save as' to save it to your computer. If it doesn't work out, open it in new tab and try the same. Check the snapshots attached for reference.

2) Download hack using IDM

Go to the designated YT video to capture download links
Change the video URL from
this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxdSr03ULdM
to: https://www.youtube.com/embed/hxdSr03ULdM

Make sure to change the video ID from the above example with yours.

Navigate to this embed url in your browser and IDM will again detect media just like in regular watch page, but this time you will be able to see HD downloads. Please check the first snapshot attached.

If you don't want to type this again and again, you can bookmark the below:

Just visit any website, bookmark it and then edit the URL to the above mentioned code.
Now when you visit any YT video, just click on your bookmark and it will load the embed video in new tab.
Refresh if IDM not loaded already and there you have it!

Since the last one I used broke, I wasn't able to find any YouTube downloader website that works well. But the program youtube-dl works for all operating systems*, has all features you could ever want from it** and is actively developed, so it should also keep working in the future. After installing, simply enter "youtube-dl <URL>" into a terminal, where <URL> is either the URL of the YouTube video or just the video ID. It also downloads YouTube playlists and channels, SoundCloud tracks and playlists, Twitch VODs and pretty much every other piece of video or audio on the internet and smartly figures out what you want it to do.

*Officially listed are Windows, Linux and Mac, but I also managed to install it on Android.
**For example I recently downloaded a gigantic playlist with youtube-dl, using command line parameters to log in with my YouTube account (for private videos and more), marking the videos as watched, continuing on errors instead of aborting, giving the files a custom format that included the uploader name and the playlist index and sorting out all strange characters (like é). It can also bypass country restrictions, filter in many different ways, only download the audio track (I always use -f bestaudio/best to get the best quality, that has the downside of downloading some as mp3, some as mp4, some as m4a and some as webm, but you can also make it automatically convert the files), read from lists in files and much more.

Just type in “YouTube to MP4” on google and copy the link. It’ll convert it and you can download it. Same thing with songs if you type in a lyric video and go to “YouTube to MP3”

Most online websites have stopped working. To download videos from YouTube, you can use Jihosoft 4K Video Downloader, which allows you to download videos in batches and save them in high quality like 1080P, 2K, 4K, 8K, etc.

Personally, Youtube-DL it's much more powerful than any web based program (many probably are using it as their back end) but it's command line operated so it might be difficult for a computer novice.

I need to download a YouTube video (an advert a client of mine is in - I’m cutting a model’s showreel - it’s not cc on YouTube but we have permission to use it, the ad agency is just not going to spend their own time/resources uploading and sending me the file).

I highly recommend yt-dlp over youtube-dl right now. I tried youtube-dl but got crawling download speeds of around 70 KB/s. According to Github forums this is a common issue.

I use Jdownloader, its a program though not an online thing. I like it because of the flexibility, it will set itself ready to download anything in whatever link you copy (CTRL+C) including YT videos, in all qualities, or just the audio if you want. Very versatile not too annoying. It can also download multipart files from direct-link downloads and then decompress them automatically, prompting you to complete the captchas after making all the waiting for you.

Great little program.

I've had jackshit for luck using VLC lately and one of the only other sites I can think of that I once trusted now tries to download viruses onto my computer. Thank god I'm fast enough to cancel the download. But I know people can and still do download YT videos to make memes and stuff. How?

It's deprecated since some years, better to use yt-dlp, and if you don't like command line, go with the GUI Stacher (who got all-in-one bundled) to download your things out.
