TL;DR To export audio in Audacity, use the "File" menu and choose "Export" to save your audio in formats like WAV, MP3, or OGG depending on your needs.
Basic Exporting Process
To export audio from Audacity, you can simply go to the "File" menu, select "Export," and choose the format you desire (e.g., WAV, MP3, OGG). This process allows you to save your edited audio for use outside of Audacity [1:1],
[1:2]. For exporting specific sections of your project, highlight the desired clip and use "Export Selected Audio"
[4:1],
[4:2].
Handling Stereo Tracks
If you need to export only one side of a stereo track, Audacity provides tools to split stereo tracks. You can mute the channel you don't want to export by using the "Split Stereo Track" option available through the Autotrack button [2:1].
Replacing Audio in Video Files
While Audacity itself does not support direct video file manipulation, you can replace audio in video files using external programs like Avidemux or FFmpeg. These tools allow you to overwrite the original audio without re-encoding the video, thus preserving its quality [3:2],
[3:4].
Exporting Multiple Tracks
For projects with multiple recordings that need to be exported separately, you can cut and paste clips into new tracks and use the "Export Multiple" option. This will save each track as a separate file [4:3],
[4:4].
Choosing the Right Format
When deciding which format to export your audio in, consider the platform where it will be used. WAV or FLACC are often recommended for high-quality audio on platforms like YouTube, while MP3 is commonly used for general purposes due to its smaller file size [5:1],
[5:2]. Always check the platform's recommended settings to ensure compatibility and optimal sound quality.
Ok i am not a very advanced user. I have just started understanding video editing and how ever a small effect can effect rendering times.
I make talking head style vlog. I want to know that is it possible to export audio only after i cut the video as final in editing. Basically i want to treat it in audacity and then bring it back again. Is it possible and how?
Yes, it is possible, you can do it just on export select MP3 instead of MP4.

Export in wav or mp3, then reimport
Hi,

So I have a wav file, it has one lot of sound on the left channel and another on the right, I want to extract just one channel and not have both ie stereo, I've been looking around but I can't find a function to do this, any help welcome. I tried to do this in Kdenlive too but no luck.
I think it's the Autotrack button to the left and above the play/pause buttons. Drop down box, click on Split stereo track. Then you can mute either channel you want. I think that will do what you want.
Wow thank you.
I imported the audio from a video, but I want to overwrite the audio on the video I imported from. Is this possible? I suppose I might be able to use ffmpeg for this.
Once you have modified the audio in the way that you require, you can replace the original audio in the video file with the new audio using avidemux.
A nice thing about using avidemux for this is that it is easy to replace the audio without having to re-encode the video (which would inevitably lead to some loss in quality).
The down side of using avidemux is that it can initially be quite difficult to use, but fortunately there are a lot of tutorials available on the internet. (It's actually quite easy once you get the hang of it).
It's called a transwrap, I'd expect you'd need to use ffmpeg
yes, ffmpeg
You can't do that in audacity. You have to use a video editing program.
Just doing a simple audio recording from a mixer mono single track. Speakers from a conference. Audacity used to be so simple. I want to be able to stop and start the recordings and have them as separate tracks. Please see attached pic.
When I export to MP3 it saves both as one file. Any suggestions on how I can do this. What I am trying to do should be very simple.

Appreciate any help and please explain like I am 5 if possible.....
you could also click on the clip handle bar of the section you want to export (so that the whole clip is selected / highlighted), then "file > export > export selected audio"
the clip handle bar is where the "audio 1 #2" shows above the waveform on your picture.
Cut and paste one clip to a new track, then export multiple.
I don't know how to do that. Sorry I am struggling
Go to tracks - add new.
Select, cut and paste one of the clips to that track just like you would anything in any program.
Go to export - multiple. That will export each track as a separate file.
> Audacity used to be so simple.
Click on the clip or highlight the clip and use file ➔ export ➔ export selected audio. "Export selected audio" has been standard on audacity for at least a decade. I'm guessing you do not use audacity much.
When exporting audio to use for YouTube and Spotify should it be exported as mp3 wav or ogg? I don’t know much about the differences between them.
Both sites have recommend settings:

Thanks!
Hi there,
Most people largely recommend WAV or FLACC for YT quality audio
Hello, I am trying to export some audio recordings to AIFF. When I go to export the file, it doesn’t give me an option to export to AIFF, just MP3, WAV, etc. Is there something I’m missing?
My OS is Linux mint.
Thanks for any help.
Do the instructions in the first response to this forum post work:
>"File menu > Export > Export Audio"
then select "Other compressed types" as the file format.
Then select "AIFF" as the "header" and "signed 16-bit PCM" as the "encoding".
(I'm not in front of a Linux machine at the moment so I can't try this myself.)
Thanks it worked!
Long story short I made a movie the other day and the audio wasn't great. Found a slight fix in audacity that I tested on one of the files. Thing is I have 90 clips. Also I don't know how to import just the audio, because when I try to import the video, it won't let me. Can anyone help me?
If audacity supports AAF or OMF you could export that from your editor and fix it there very easily, having all tracks and everything.
But depending on the fix, most editors have decent audio tools already and that could be a much simpler solution.
Using sony vegas, and there are some good tools, but honestly, I think I need some serious audio work.
Is it possible to export just the audio from vegas? (Sorry, I haven't used vegas.)
Dried intervened exportation, multi select exportation
Nothing helps, the audio file is only the stereo channel
You're using two output channels (for no reason imo).
In the mixer (F3) route all final outputs to Stereo Out instead of mixing stereo and mono out.
A mono channel sent to Stereo out will still be mono.
Click where it says multiple and tick them both and you will have both files
Talking about 1 file that have both mono and stereo audio inside
You get whatever you select as the source when you export. If you select a path that is two channels then that is what you get. If you want one file that has "both mono and stereo audio inside" then you would have to create such a path in the mixer, route signals to it, and then select that for export. You could maybe create a three-channel path and route to that, I'm not sure, I have never needed to do that.
If that's not what you're looking for then I don't know what you mean. Like Veggie wrote if you send just a mono source into a stereo path the output will be a two-channel signal with mono content in it.
Hello, I'm having a problem with the audio in my project. I can hear it in the composition, but when I export it (directly to audio or as a movie), it doesn't export. All the audio output options are enabled. I recently formatted my computer. The only thing I can think of is that I need to update something. I can't think what, but QuickTime is up to date. Tthanks and best regards!
Which format are you exporting to? You may be missing a codec to listen to it depending on the format.
Vlc player has the majority and is free.
Thanks, I had VLC Media installed before formatting, and I reinstalled it just in case, but that's not it. The audio file can be opened, but it tells me it's corrupt and can't be heard, in any format I export it to, .wav, .mov, etc. This only happens to me with Toon Boom; I don't have any problems with other programs.
I realised that the realtek codec is outdated, I will check if that is the case.
Hmmm. Have you attempt to export a mp4? That’s the current average format these days.
