How to Install Plugins in Audacity

TL;DR

  1. Place plugin files in the correct folder.
  2. Ensure compatibility with your Audacity version.
  3. Enable plugins via the Add/Remove Plugins menu.

Locating the Plugin Folder

To install plugins in Audacity, you need to place the plugin files in the appropriate folder. For Windows users, this is typically within the Audacity directory in your AppData folder [4:2]. Extract the necessary .dll files from your downloaded plugin zip and move them into the Audacity plugin folder. After placing the files, restart Audacity to recognize the new plugins [4:2].

Version Compatibility

Certain plugins may not be compatible with newer versions of Audacity. Users have reported issues with plugins not loading correctly in Audacity 3.0 or later versions [2:1]. If you encounter such problems, consider using an older version like Audacity 2.4.2, which might offer better compatibility for some plugins [2:5]. Additionally, VST3 plugins require Audacity version 3.2 or higher [5:1].

Enabling Plugins

Once the plugins are placed in the correct folder, you must enable them through Audacity's interface. Navigate to the "Add/Remove Plugins" menu where you can activate your newly installed plugins [4:3]. If a plugin does not appear after enabling it, ensure that the library is properly loaded and check for any error messages indicating issues such as "Could not load the library" [4:4].

Official Resources and Safety

It's always best to download plugins from official sources to ensure safety and compatibility. The Audacity manual provides detailed instructions on installing various types of plugins, including effects, generators, and analyzers [1:1]. For specific plugin types like Vamp plugins, refer to their unique installation instructions [4:1].

Additional Tips

If you're looking for specific functionalities like a noise gate, check if it's included in your current Audacity version or if a free plugin is available [3:2]. Muse, the company behind Audacity, has added optional features, some of which may require purchase [3:1]. Always verify the plugin requirements and ensure your Audacity version supports them before proceeding with installation.

Won't download plugins

Posted by FlameyCooler · in r/audacity · 3 years ago

Hey, so when I try to add my spitfish and you wa shock plugin, it doesn't allow me to and just says "Could not load the library" I've checked if it was downloaded at the right -bit for it, that it was in the plugin folder, I've even deleted and reinstalled the program twice and the plugins as many times as possible. any ideas? because I honestly have no idea at that point and might learn a whole new audio editor at that point.

have a nice day and thanks for reading.

Safety Check for Plugins, Official sources

Posted by PhoenixRagon · in r/audacity · 1 month ago

Hello,

I am very new to audio edditing and haven't done anything to complicated on my computer for several years. I have been trying to get back into tinkering myself and I downloaded audacity for a personal project of mine.

I have been trying to learn the programm and think that in the Version I downloaded (3.7.4) there is no inbuilt Noise Gate, which I think I desperately need, since my setup provoces a unpleasant echo in my recordings. I allready know how to install plugins but I have a very sensitive VPN setup for my homeoffice for a bigger company and don't want to ruin it by accidentally installing malware with the plugin.

Unfortunately all the websites I found looked pretty scetchy, which is to be expected for an open source project, that much I know. The issue is that I have no idea which is a "safe" source for plugins, what that looks like or how to check. I know there is an official website, but I don't quite get why it's called "audacityteam.org" and I am a little suspicious because of the several phishing tecniques I know. I may also not know how to find the actual website and with the boosting you can do for websites nowadays it could also be a honeypot that I found.

I also tried allready searching on the reddit and with search engines, but couldn't find a clear answer. I also don't want to use A.I. for technical/ethical reasons and would apprechiate any help and advice you guys could give me.

The official download for Audacity is ... https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

Audacity was acquired by Muse in 2021. Muse have added optional features some of which are not free.

So I have checked their plugins page but all the noise gates there have to be purchased. But you can download earlier versions than mine of which I know that contain a noise gate. Do you by any chance know which earlier version have an inbuilt noise gate ?

The purchase info by Muse makes a lot of sense now, they are eroding the free competition because of course you cann't have poor people have a free programm for sound editing to break free frow the neonobility of capitalism......

>"Do you by any chance know which earlier version have an inbuilt noise gate ?".

Audacity3 comes with a noise-gate built-in:

*"*Accessed by: Effect > Noise Removal and Repair > Noise Gate"

https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/noise_gate.html

If you're using Audacity2 there is a free noise-gate plugin ... https://plugins.audacityteam.org/nyquist-plugins/effect-plugins/dynamics-processing#noise-gate

RE: Noise gate question -- look under Effect > Noise Removal and Repair and you'll see the noise gate option, at least that's the case for the Mac version.

I'm not sure how to apply plugins to Audacity

it's been a while but last time i did it, it was something like...

  • Audacity will have a plugin folder possible in the appdata
  • You need to extract a dll out of the zip file you download and the move the dll file into the audacity plugin folder
  • Reload audacity

GoldVipertooth · OP · 3 years ago

i have done that. i’m not sure if i messed with something beforehand, it shows up as an option to enable when i check to add new ones. under new. when i click to enable it, it doesn’t show up as an option. like, at all. but i check again in the add/remove plugins area and there it is. also, thank you for helping

Check out these instructions. You need to place the plugins in a different folder than other Audacity plugins, as detailed in the link.

GoldVipertooth · OP · 3 years ago

alright, thanks for the link, but now it's saying that it failed because it "could not load the library" would you happen to know what this means? I did download the FFmpeg library before, thinking that would help.

I can't enable a plug-in.

Posted by smatosthe3rd · in r/audacity · 4 years ago

I downloaded a plugin called Youwashock and added it to my plug-in list on audacity. It comes up in the Add/Remove Plug-ins option, but when I enable it, nothing happens. It doesn't show up in my list of effects and doesn't work when I use the keybind to use it.

Here is the download link if you want to try it yourself and see if it works: https://sites.google.com/site/youwashockvst/

If someone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Perhaps it is outdated (2007, Windows 98, XP, Vista). I guess you'll have to look for a more modern substitute.

Is there anyway to add audacity as a plugin?

Posted by DJ_Stapler · in r/FL_Studio · 6 years ago

This is probably the stupidest question I've ever asked on Reddit. To be honest, I prefer Audacity to Edison, and I usually end up having to export certain things just to plug them into Audacity, edit the sound a bit, and then export it from Audacity and import it back into FL. Even though I know the answer is probably no, is there a way to put Audacity into FL as a plugin?

Haven’t used Audacity in a while so I don’t know off the top of my head, but go to the website and look around to see if they offer a VST version of audacity. That would mean it’s a plug-in version. But in general I’ll just recommend against trying to use audacity with FL. Or at all. Not bagging on it, I used it a ton back in the day but It’s not worth the hassle of running it as a plug-in in FL, if even possible. Edison is far superior.

Open FL's plugin manager. Make note of one of the VST (not VST3) paths set in the Plugin search paths on the left. That's your VST plugin folder.

Then follow the instructions in your screenshot and the manual page.

Try to throw them in this (it's the default path): C:\Program Files\VSTPlugins

I'd suggest you to do this scanning in your browser. Right click 'Plugins' folder and select fast scan.

The right logic is 'Yes, we do have to scan everything to add plugins as we never know the new plugin you add is a real new one, or a new format of some plugins you might have owned before and got updated'. Besides, IT IS FAST.

You simply must uncheck scan already verified plugins and Fl will only scan newer stuff you’ve downloaded

Well you do have “rescan verified plugins” unchecked. I’m not sure why it’s still scanning everything.

EDIT; uncheck verify plugins at the top

Where did the Punch Copy/Paste options go in Audacity 3.3.3?

Hey all! Ever since version 3.3.3 I haven't been able to find the options for Punch Copy/Paste in the Effects dropdown menu. It seems that it's been reorganized, but I'm not sure where you can find installed plugins anymore.

No problem. You installed them with the Nyqvist plugins installer in audacity? After that you need to restart audacity to see them. That threw me for a loop for longer than I'd like to admit haha

how to install plugins in audacity

Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing plugins in Audacity:

  1. Download the Plugin:

    • Ensure you download the correct version of the plugin compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  2. Locate the Audacity Plugin Folder:

    • Windows: Typically found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Audacity\Plug-Ins.
    • macOS: Usually located in /Applications/Audacity/Plug-Ins.
    • Linux: The path can vary, but it’s often in /usr/share/audacity/Plug-Ins or ~/.audacity/Plug-Ins.
  3. Install the Plugin:

    • Copy the downloaded plugin file (usually a .ny, .dll, or .vst file) into the Audacity Plug-Ins folder.
  4. Enable the Plugin in Audacity:

    • Open Audacity.
    • Go to Effect > Add / Remove Plug-ins.
    • Find your plugin in the list, select it, and click Enable.
    • Click OK to confirm.
  5. Restart Audacity:

    • Close and reopen Audacity to ensure the plugin is fully loaded and available for use.

Important Notes:

  • Make sure to check the plugin documentation for any specific installation instructions.
  • Some plugins may require additional dependencies or specific versions of Audacity.

Recommendation: If you're new to using plugins, start with popular ones like VST effects or LADSPA plugins to enhance your audio editing experience. They can significantly improve your workflow and sound quality.
