TL;DR
Free Space and Internet Access
One common issue that prevents updates is insufficient storage space. It's recommended to have at least 40 GB of free SSD space for major updates [2:1]. Additionally, ensure you have stable internet access, as updates require a connection to Apple's servers
[3:1]. If you're experiencing issues connecting to the update server, try updating from a different location or network
[1].
Reinstalling macOS via Recovery Mode
If your MacBook Air is stuck in an update loop or fails to complete the update, booting into Recovery Mode can be a solution. Press Command + R during startup to access MacOS Utilities, where you can choose to reinstall macOS [4:5]. This method has helped users restore their systems to normal functionality
[4:2]. Before reinstalling, ensure you have enough free disk space and turn off automatic updates to prevent future inconveniences
[4:1].
Consider Hardware Limitations
Older Intel-based MacBook Airs may struggle with newer macOS updates due to hardware limitations. These machines tend to run hotter, especially without effective cooling mechanisms [5:1]
[5:2]. If overheating becomes a persistent issue after updates, consider upgrading to a MacBook with Apple Silicon (M1 or M2), which offers better performance and thermal efficiency.
Additional Tips
For those attempting to downgrade macOS, using outdated software like Android File Transfer can cause compatibility issues. Alternatives like OpenMTP might offer better functionality [3:4]. If your MacBook Air continues to experience problems post-update, ensuring it's adequately charged during the process can sometimes resolve issues
[4:3].
hi! i have a 2020 macbook air and keep having problems using it whenever there is an update. it will completely stop letting me use the internet or do anything on it, and when i try to update it at my house it says “can’t get a response from the apple software update server”. i took it to my moms house the last time and it ended up letting me update and my macbook was working fine again at home. if this is a macbook issue, is there anything i can do to fix it? i don’t understand why it keeps happening because in the past it would still work if it wasn’t up to date on updates
If you have backups I would reinstall the OS. Run software update. Recover files.
Hi guys! I bought a used 2020 MacBook Air today. The last update it had was 12.7.6 and will not allow me to update it to 15.4. I have tried using safe mode, recovery mode, restarting it, holding down certain buttons, etc. I’ve been on chat with apple for a few hours now and cannot seem to get this thing to update. It will go through the entire process and take me right back to the software update screen. It does not throw any codes. PLEASE help!!
You need 40 GB of SSD free to update.
and
You need Apple Id, Admin password, working WiFi and full Admin access to Mac – not MDM managed or firmware locked.
*DOWNGRADE
My MacBook Air M3 shipped with MacOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and everything was smooth until I decided to update do MacOS Sequoia 15.4. I cannot transfer my Nintendo Switch games through Android Transfer Files, the app crashes and closes. I have created a USB media installer of 14.4.1 , formatted the Mac and tried to install it but when It finishes it shows 14.5.7 😭 I have tried to turn off my router while updating through USB stick to prevent it from updating and installation fails. Does anyone has any tips?
Android File Transfer is ridiculously outdated, try OpenMTP
OpenMTP is not working as well. I tried. Something is broken on MacOS
My keyboard misspelled it. I meant downgrade
You are not clear. Are you trying to update or trying NOT to update? For any major MacOS update you need internet access.
I need help with my mac. It’s a MacBook Air from 2019 and when I opened my mac in class this morning it was updating. 4 hours later when I came home, nothing had changed, so I tried to turn off my MacBook to see if it would stop (because I have work to do and I desperately need to use it). It turned off, however, when it turned back on it is not stuck in this loop of loading a little bit with the Apple logo, then shutting down again, and then it starts updating again with the Apple logo, but then shutting down again. This just goes on and on and on and nothing changes. Please help, idk what to do!
UPDATE:
I managed to get it back to normal through pressing I think it was Command + R and it brought me to MacOS utilities. I then restarted my mac through reinstalling MacOS Sonoma. So all is good. Thank you everyone for the advice though :’)
have you tried charging it? not sure but maybe it needs more power before the update can finish?
Yeah I have, it’s currently plugged in charging at the moment so it should have enough charge, it’s strange
that is very odd i've never had that issue before ngl. i hope you figure out i'd be soooo mad lol
Boot in recovery (R key while starting, I think). Then reinstall the system. Do NOT shut down while it does it.
Once you're booted into Recovery Mode, make sure you have enough free disk space before reinstalling Mac OS like Electrical_West_5381 suggested.
Turn OFF automatic updates in settings so it doesn't update at an inconvenient time again.
I tried updating my laptop last night, but the update failed. I restarted my laptop and ran the update again this morning. Now, it's overheating just from logging in or opening Safari. I’ve restarted it, but it’s still much slower than before the update. Apps take forever to open, and it starts heating up before I even start doing anything.
Intel machines run MUCH hotter than M chips. With the air not having a fan it is going to cook. New OS will tax it even further and also heat the battery. It is time to look for some used m1 airs perhaps.
The Intel MacBook Air has a fan. It isn't super effective, but it has one.
My MacBook is stuck in a update loop every time I update it,wait a few hours to do its thing when it turns back on this window pops up and the computer says it’s ready to update again! I’ve updated it 6 times already and it keeps happening. I recently got the screen fixed if that means anything.
Intel macbook or m1? Update to Ventura first
It’s intel. How do I do that. When I check for updates it just shows the latest one?
App store
Hi, I have a macbook air 2018 that has this problem updating to Mac Os Sonoma 14.7.5. I already tried reinstalling the software from recovery (without deleting data), reset NVRAM and disconnecting the battery. Also tried S.O.S form Utility disk without success. I know it’s not a big deal not updating, but I don’t know why doesn’t need to work. Thanks
Make sure you have at least 40GB free on system drive.
Do Time Machine(TM) backup
In Terminal(Catalina 10.15 and later) run:
softwareupdate --list-full-installers

To create bootable MacOs INSTALLER USB.
So I’ve noticed whenever a new update is nearing or is available my laptop decides to have issues with my home wifi. Normally it would show the name and the little lock at the other end to indicate it needs a password… well when my laptop needs updated the lock disappears and it refuses to connect to the internet. I’ve reset my router multiple times and it’s not my router. Why does my laptop do this??? I’ve had to connect to my phone hotspot just to download the new update and be able to use my wifi on my laptop. And my phone connects to the wifi no problem so it’s not my internet. It HAS to be my laptop.
There is no correlation between a not-yet-released update (or one that has been downloaded but not installed) and the stability of your Wi-Fi. You should know that restarting (power cycling) and resetting a router aren’t the same. The latter usually involves a paper clip or additional steps, along with inputting a network name and password, then manually rejoining on all the client-side devices (unless you kept the same SSID and password). If your router is older than your MacBook Air by a few years, then it may be overdue for replacing, even if some of your other devices are unaffected.
Okay, thank you!!
Anyone experiencing this bug when update is downloaded system restart and nothing happens? Update is still available in settings. Any fix for that?
Greets Mike
You need at least 50GB of free space to do an update. The initial update download is 12, expanded more than 12, then it needs space to install into, then there are more recent additional components downloaded during the install process. It would be useful if as part of the update process, Apple notified users of the required free space. Because each has slightly different requirements.
I have 160GB free space so thats not the case:) Thank you for answer
At least you know that in future not to fill your drive to the max. This is especially important with SSDs because a full SSD is a permanently dead SSD due to the way SSDs work.
I've not seen that, but I often have to go into Safe Mode to get the update to complete (both on Intel and M1), otherwise it sits on "15 minutes remaining"
Well, I've tried everything. Only update normal and safe mode. Whole system 12GB normal and safe mode . Nothing. still on 12.0.1
After updating to the recent MacOS, my Mac seems to have forgotten my password so I had to change it? It took me a long time to finally have it accept the new password. Now my Touch ID needed to be reset and I got a pop up saying my Apple ID was no longer synced (needed to relog in again) now overall the laptop is quite sluggish and the fans are going crazy.
No issues on my M1 MacBook Air. Ok it doesn’t have fans. But the password thing and Touch ID is working fine.
how to fix macbook air update issues
Key Considerations for Fixing MacBook Air Update Issues
Check Compatibility: Ensure your MacBook Air is compatible with the latest macOS version. Older models may not support newer updates.
Free Up Space: Make sure you have enough storage space available. macOS updates typically require several gigabytes of free space. Aim for at least 15-20 GB.
Stable Internet Connection: Ensure you have a reliable and stable internet connection during the update process to avoid interruptions.
Restart Your Mac: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve update issues. Restart your MacBook Air before attempting the update again.
Safe Mode: Boot your Mac in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key during startup. This can help resolve issues by preventing certain software from loading.
Reset NVRAM/PRAM: Restart your Mac and hold down Command + Option + P + R keys until you hear the startup sound twice. This can help with various hardware-related issues.
Use Terminal Commands: If the update fails, you can try using Terminal to force the update. Open Terminal and type:
softwareupdate --install --all
This command will attempt to install all available updates.
Reinstall macOS: As a last resort, you can reinstall macOS. Boot into Recovery Mode by holding Command + R during startup, then select "Reinstall macOS."
Recommendation: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store for professional assistance. They can provide more tailored solutions based on your specific situation.
