How to Grow Ancient Fruit in Stardew Valley

TL;DR

  • Use the greenhouse for year-round growth.
  • Utilize seed makers to expand your crop.
  • Plant outdoors from spring to fall, but protect from winter.

Greenhouse Cultivation

The most effective way to grow ancient fruit is by utilizing the greenhouse. Once you unlock it, you can plant ancient fruit inside and they will continue to produce fruit year-round without dying at the end of a season [1:1][4:2]. This allows for a continuous supply of fruit, which can be turned into seeds or sold for profit.

Seed Production

To expand your ancient fruit farm, use seed makers. By placing an ancient fruit into a seed maker, you can obtain multiple seeds, often yielding two or three per fruit [1:2]. This method allows you to increase your number of plants significantly over time. Continue this process until you have enough seeds to fill your desired planting area [1:3].

Outdoor Planting

If you haven't unlocked the greenhouse yet, you can still plant ancient fruit outdoors during spring, summer, and fall. However, keep in mind that they will die in winter [4:1][4:2]. It's advisable to save seeds from your last harvest in fall to replant them in spring [1:6]. Alternatively, if you find yourself in winter, wait until spring to begin outdoor planting [3:1].

Alternative Locations

Once you unlock Ginger Island by repairing Willy's boat, you can also plant ancient fruit there. The island offers a tropical climate where crops do not die in winter, providing another location for year-round cultivation [4:3][4:4].

Profitability Considerations

While ancient fruit is highly profitable due to its regrowth capability, some players consider starfruit as an alternative because of its high sell price. However, starfruit requires replanting each cycle, making ancient fruit more convenient for continuous harvests [2:3][5:1].

How do I start an Ancient Fruit farm?

ORIGINAL POST

I'm in late game (finished the Community Center and such) and I have a bunch of iridium sprinklers. So, I want to make an ancient fruit farm. But I'm having trouble getting enough of the seeds.

You need seed makers. Drop in an ancient fruit, get some seeds. Often you can get 2 or 3 seeds from one fruit. Repeat until you have all the plants you need.

But then they all die in winter, so what do I do next year? That's the part I'm having trouble with.

Plant some in the greenhouse, this way you have a yearlong supply.

As others said, plant in the greenhouse. But I also save my last crop of fall and turn it all into seeds so I can replant a whole bunch outside in spring =)

Ah, gotcha-plant your ancient fruit in the greenhouse! That is the only way to keep them from dying at the end of the season. (Lots of pots in your house would work too, but that's far less efficient).

Growing ancient fruit inside your house?

Is it possible to grow ancient fruit inside your house in a pot? I don't have the greenhouse unlocked yet, but thought this might give me a headstart after which I can put some of the fruit in a seedmaker.

Ancient fruit sadly can't grow in pots but you can just plant starfruit since it's just as profitable

Starfruit is more profitable than ancient fruit, it's just also more work due to having to replant which is why most people default to ancient

Iridium Ancient fruit can be sold for 1210 with tiller and regrows in 7 days = 172 gold per day

Starfruit can be sold for 1650 after 13 days and seeds have to be rebought for 400 gold making 13 day profitability 1250 or 96 gold per day

If you have to water every day because it's inside then starfruits are not really more work.

0 upvotes on reddit
waterpup99 · 3 months ago

It is substantially less profitable on a per day basis when factoring in repurchasing seeds vs regrowing for free. I'd recommend pineapple for easy pot plants plus deluxe retaining soil = no watering ever

Well you wouldn't have a garden pot either since you get the recipe only after greenhouse. But no, ancient fruit is the single crop that will refuse garden pot.

1 upvotes on reddit

No. Also I don’t think you get the garden pot recipe until you’ve completed the greenhouse.

Actually if you got it in summer or earlier you can plant it, it grows in all seasons except winter, plant it and use the seed maker to make even more for when the green house is ready

Edit: keep in mind it takes 28 days to grow, so fall is bad to plant it

Edit 2: I see you're in winter, at the start of your next year plant it outside, and make sure you got a scarecrow next to it

Depends on how you wanna play & what your current setup is.

Do you want money more & have alot of kegs? Buy starfruit from sandy to grow and make wine with until you get ancient fruit fir the ease of the multi harvest without rebuying & growing.

Do you want more of a variety? Then i would say grow multi-harvest crops that have a nice sell price as well like cranberries, blueberrys or strawberrys. {you can even start putting them in seed makers for when the season comes around to have loads to plant outside on day one}

Do you want gifts for the villagers? Then why not grow their loved food.

Do you want food to use for things like energy or speed? Why not grow crops to make them for example like for crab cakes you could grow corn {for oil} & wheat {for flour} then all you will need is crabs and eggs to make a crab cake which gives nearly a full days worth of speed buff.

Do you want to have a happy horse? Then you could grow carrots to feed to them each day for the speed boost you get from it as well.

Do you just want to collect? Then why not try growing all the multi-harvest crops possible.

Do you want a big lump payday from just crop selling? Then why not try growing sweet gem berrys & then putting them in seed makers to make more & so on until you have loads then one year in fall plant them all & see how much you can get from just selling the crop its self.

Do you just want it to look good? Then why not just grow what looks nice.

If you've fixed the bus you can get starfruit seeds. Other than that anything that you don't have to replant. Since you're in Fall cranberries should be available.

We've got an array of hops. Fresh harvest everyday, make beer or just sell as is.

But based on the comments here we might get a couple rows of something else going. Will try it out tonight :)

Yr 5 and I still have the very same 20-25 strawberry bushes I planted during yr 1 🥹

if you can afford it though, (and have unlocked the bus), starfruit is always a good investment imo while you transition the rest of the space to ancient fruit if that’s your end goal!

Are ancient fruit just the best?

Posted by PeachTheCat4 · in r/StardewValley · 27 days ago

Now obviously ancient fruit are what one should plant in the greenhouse. However, what about outside? Because I did a bit of math, and though I'm not an expert, it turns out that a tile of ancient fruit, if one kegs every produce, makes between 18-22 (depending on speed gro type) thousand gold per year (discluding winter of course). The only other crop I found that could compete is starfruit of course, but starfruit only grows during the summer, and because summer is in the middle, it's not worth it to weed all my ancient fruit for the sake of starfruit, because I'd have to replant, and because by that point all my ancient fruit are fully grown. So is it just the best to plant only ancient fruit, putting half of my first harvest of the year into seed makers for the next year?

Edit: I still haven't reached ginger island (because of a single goddamn walleye), so when I do, I'll obviously fill it up with ancient fruit.

There is some subtlety to it if you really get into the weeds of optimization, but broadly speaking, yes, ancient fruit is the best crop. It takes a lot of work to get a large crop going, though.

8 upvotes on reddit
TheChosenerPoke · 27 days ago

Ancient fruit? I’d say it takes the “least work” to get a large crop growing, but the most time. With other plants it’d be more work with all the replanting, and with regrowables they all just don’t hold a candle in value to ancient fruit

3 upvotes on reddit
Wrong-Pear5388 · 27 days ago

Also once grown ancient fruit keeps producing every 7 days, whereas starfruit you have to get the seeds and plant them after every harvest, and they are expensive.

16 upvotes on reddit
alexjf56 · 27 days ago

The profits are still worth it for starfruit I think but I consider the time saved with ancient fruit to be really valuable and so it’s always what I choose

I leave star fruit for Ginger Island and fill the greenhouse with ancient fruit.

3 upvotes on reddit
superlibster · 27 days ago

For me it’s opportunity cost. Ancient fruit frees up so much time. I’m able to plant 1k ancient fruits day 1 of spring. Then all I have to do is harvest. No replanting. No tilling. Freeing me up to crush mines, skull cavern or volcano. The money and progress made between loots makes it so worth it.

8 upvotes on reddit
RedPanda385 · 27 days ago

I plant other stuff outside. Getting new ancient fruit seeds for replanting every year is just annoying, takes away from your earnings, and requires significant pre-planning. Also, variety is great. I'll usually plant ancient fruit in the greenhouse and on Ginger Island, since this only requires the initial investment, and you'll get way more cash than you need with just that space.

I keep the main farm seasonal and try to plant a variety of crops. Best crops, cash-wise, are cauliflower and strawberries for spring, starfruit for summer, and pumpkin and beets for fall. Or just fill it with buildings like sheds, fish ponds, and barns, since you can't build these anywhere else.

57 upvotes on reddit
PeachTheCat4 · OP · 27 days ago

I care less about variety than I care about MONEY tho

And it's not a huge investment to make seeds every year, it's just half of one harvest, and each year has between 8 and 10 harvests depending on speed gro level

GodSaveTheRegime · 27 days ago

I once tried to calculate it (but beware, those were my numbers for MY farm) and it turned out that ancient fruit would only be more profitable than starfruit after three years. Up to that point, the fact that you have to replant starfruit every time does not diminish the profit enough to make it worse than ancient fruit

4 upvotes on reddit
RedPanda385 · 27 days ago

If you're trying to max profit with minimal input, you might consider not planting anything on the main farm at all, but rather build a few deluxe barns and get lots of pigs. They need zero care after getting max hearts and dig up tons of truffles. If you get the "always iridium star quality" perk from the foraging skill tree, you can sell the truffles directly for a lot of cash and don't even need to process them.

1 upvotes on reddit
GhostyVoidm · 27 days ago

if you do minmax especially with fertilisers though, starfruit will just always give you a higher output on the dot, unless youre going for like a 20year/forever run- so it just depends how you play. for as much money as you can get asap, itll be starfruit (between that and ancient fruit)

that said, for the average stardew player- ancient fruit will also just be way lower maintenance and lower reocurring cost since you only replant them once a year outside the greenhouse/island.. i will say the cost of the seeds becomes barely noticeable after a couple harvests.

i think it makes sense for most to settle for ancient fruit for longterm money

personally, i just have ancient fruit in the greenhouse/island, and i always focus on other crops (starfruit and beets yum) on my actual farm.

a lot of the crops follow the rule of yknow more labour = more money- if you reaaally want to get the most money you can you need to invest in machines available, even with regular crops (beets and pineapples are prime examples)

Meanwhile, I always leave my last ancient fruit harvest as a sacrifice to the junimos. And their far less cuddly relations.

How to fill the greenhouse with ancient fruit?

Posted by Appropriate-Sir4297 · in r/StardewValley · 7 months ago

I’m around spring 13 on year two and have one ancient fruit plant fully grown in the greenhouse. I’m trying to fill my entire greenhouse but it takes AGES for the ancient fruit to grow. Should I just plant a few more and wait for them to grow while I keep making seeds from the single plant’s regrowth? Or should I do something else? I usually fill my greenhouse with strawberries so I’m trying to do something new. And how do people get all their ancient fruit to grow at the same pace once they do fill their greenhouse? Any help is appreciated.

Until the green house is full of ancient fruit, use the seed maker to turn every fruit you get into seeds. Use speed grow to speed up the growing process (this only affects the initial growth, but since the process is so long, 10% makes a huge difference).

It’s an exponential process. At first, you’ll only have one plant producing fruit to make seeds. Then you’ll have 2-4 (depending on how many seeds the seed maker gives you), then you’ll have more and more. It does take a while, though.

To get them all on the same day, just pick a day of the week to harvest once the green house is full. If you go on Friday and they’re not all ready, harvest the ones that are. When you go next Friday, they’ll all be ready. You are giving up one week’s perfect efficiency for convenience.

I'm surprised so many people sync them in the greenhouse when I go in every 1-3 days for my fruit trees anyway.

You just turn all ancient fruit imto seeds ant plant them as soon as you get them until the greenhouse is full. You synchronise the plants once they are fully grown by not collecting the fruit until all plants carry a fruit and then harvest them all at once.

You may also want to try going to lower levels of the mines and using your hoe

If you kill bugs at 15-25th floors or mutant bug layer for like 1-3 days, you should be able to get at least one ancient seed (0.5% per bug). Even easier with a burglar ring.

Another method is to line up like 10 seed makers and feed cheap crops (0.5% per crop).

On my latest playthrough I got mine in Fall 01 on an extremely bad luck day by hitting the first slime I saw on level 5 in the mines (pretty sure it was a slime not a bug). Then I died to the prismatic slime which is what I was looking for and had to pay the adventurer's guild 5 gold to recover the ancient seed lmao.

How to grow ancient fruit in stardew valley

Growing Ancient Fruit in Stardew Valley: Key Considerations

  1. Obtaining Ancient Seeds:

    • You can find Ancient Seeds by digging up Artifact Spots, defeating monsters in the mines, or purchasing them from the Traveling Cart for 1,000g.
    • You can also craft Ancient Seeds from an Ancient Seed Artifact once you have the recipe.
  2. Planting and Growth:

    • Ancient Seeds can be planted in any season except winter.
    • They take 28 days to mature and will produce fruit every 7 days after that.
  3. Optimal Growing Conditions:

    • Plant Ancient Seeds in tilled soil and ensure they are watered daily.
    • Consider using a Sprinkler system to automate watering for convenience.
  4. Greenhouse Option:

    • Once you unlock the Greenhouse, you can plant Ancient Fruit there, allowing for year-round growth.
    • This is ideal for maximizing your harvest since Ancient Fruit continues to produce throughout the year.
  5. Farming Tips:

    • Fertilizers like Speed-Gro can reduce the growth time, but they do not affect Ancient Fruit.
    • Consider using the "Deluxe Speed-Gro" for other crops if you plan to rotate crops in the same area.
  6. Selling and Profit:

    • Ancient Fruit sells for 550g each at base price, making it one of the most profitable crops in the game.
    • You can also turn Ancient Fruit into wine for even higher profits (1,100g per bottle).

Recommendation: Focus on planting Ancient Fruit in the Greenhouse as soon as you unlock it to maximize your profits and ensure a steady income throughout the year.
