How to Identify Fake Funko Pops

TL;DR

  • Check for discrepancies in box design and print quality.
  • Avoid sellers from China and deals that seem too good to be true.
  • Use online resources and community groups for verification.

Box Design and Print Quality

One of the most reliable ways to identify fake Funko Pops is by examining the box design and print quality. Fakes often have subtle errors such as incorrect font choices, washed-out colors, or differences in die-cut width [1:1]. The stippling effect in the Pop! logo and gradients can also be off in counterfeit versions [1:1]. Comparing the box to images from official Funko sources can help spot these discrepancies [3:1].

Seller Location and Pricing

A common red flag for fake Funko Pops is if they are sold from China [1:1][2:6]. Additionally, if a pop has a high market value but is being offered at a significantly lower price, it could be a fake [1:1][2:5]. It's advisable to purchase from reputable sellers with positive feedback ratings [2:2] and avoid deals that seem too good to be true [2:3].

Community Resources and Guides

There are several online resources and communities dedicated to identifying fake Funko Pops. Facebook groups focused on real vs. fake pops can provide valuable advice [2:1]. Visual guides and comparison images are also available for specific figures [4:6]. Searching for "real vs fake" comparisons for specific pops can yield helpful results [2:4].

Foot Code and Copyright Marks

While some believe checking the foot code or copyright marks can indicate authenticity, it's important to note that fakes often replicate these details accurately [1:1][1:2]. Therefore, relying solely on these features may not be sufficient to determine if a Funko Pop is genuine.

Recommendations Beyond Discussions

If you're uncertain about a Funko Pop's authenticity, consider reaching out to the community for a second opinion or consulting detailed guides and videos on identifying fakes [3:9]. Always prioritize buying from authorized retailers or platforms like eBay, which have measures in place to crack down on counterfeit items [2:3].

A lot of ways. Don’t buy into the whole foot code thing though, that’s the first thing the fakes always get right now. It’s all about the width of the die-cut, differences in font choices, washed out colors from scanning, and things like the stippling effect in the Pop! Logo, or gradients. Some are incredibly close but have small errors. Recently, a lot of high quality fakes have made it to market. The best ways to avoid fakes are to: never buy from China, ever. It’s always a fake. Also, if it has a PPG of $300 you aren’t getting it for $30 online, ever. You might be lucky enough to find one in some rogue store on a shelf that no one cares about, but it’s highly unlikely. You should expect to pay $250+ for a $300 PPG pop. If the price is too good to be true, it’s because it is.

Buying funko pops from eBay

Posted by Expert_Plane_2761 · in r/funkopop · 1 year ago

I'm in such a huge funko pop phase but I've been looking through eBay for funko pops and I have no idea how to tell if it's real or fake? Honestly I'm not entirely sure it matters all that much to me but I'm just very confused and was wondering if anyone had tips on how to avoid buying fake funko pops

Edit: the seller I'm looking has a funko authorization. Does that make it better?

Just like with anything, first check the seller's feedback rating. If they have even a small past history of selling questionable items, proceed with caution. Next, if the Pop you're looking at is a fairly common Pop, you shouldn't have to worry too much about fakery. People aren't going to waste their time making copies of something that's already plentiful in availability. It's the more rare and sought-after ones you need to look out for, like chases. Finally, just simply do your homework. Do Google searches for the item in question, and see what a real one undoubtedly looks like.

6 upvotes on reddit
AnOldYoungGuy · 1 year ago

Also, check the price. If they're offering a usually high price item for an unbeatable bargain low price, it could be too good to be true.

2 upvotes on reddit
DGSvic · 1 year ago

Just check the seller ratings/reviews. If someone is out there trying to sell fakes, I'm sure Ebay would crack down on them quick. Technically, Ebay itself is an authorized Funko retailer. You should only question if it's fake if you're going to spend hundreds of dollars on a grail. Commons and even exclusives aren't worth faking. Please beware of replica from China. They usually specify, but if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Example: a grail selling for $30 when it's value is over $500

2 upvotes on reddit
dee_el · 1 year ago

You can always google “real vs fake _____ funko”. If it’s a grail it’ll likely have a review or several lol. But you can likely trust Funko retail sellers

i woundnt purchase outside your own country and buy NOTHING from china.

oddly enough i’ve had sellers that the listing was in the states where i live then the tracking for the item starts in mexico or somewhere else. i immediately start a dispute with the seller through ebay and ive always had ebay back me in those instances.

Guide to identifying fake funkos

Posted by aaronhong13 · in r/funkopop · 6 years ago

Alright so you're interested in purchasing a pop, but you're worried you might be buying a fake. If you're looking for a non-authentic pop to add to your collection, that is fine and I have nothing against that. This is for the people who are spending full price on a pop and hopefully avoiding getting a fake in return. For the purposes of the information below, I will refer to all fake variants (custom, "China version", ect) as simply fakes.

1. Let's find some fakes on eBay

  • Search for the pop that you are purchasing and sort by lowest cost.
  • The fakes are now on the top of your results since they are usually the cheapest.
  • Scroll through some of these fakes and open some of the links in different tabs so you can keep some references. Skip the ones with stock photos of the pop as you should never purchase a pop when only given stock photos

2. Now to find some real ones to compare

  • Using the Funko app or poppriceguide.com you can find pictures of the pop and what it's supposed to look like.
  • Let's go back to eBay and start filtering our results.
    • billy funko saw sdcc -china -custom -fake
  • Using this example we are taking out any words that have "china, custom, or fake" in the title.
  • NOTE: There is also a small checkbox near the search you can check to search the descriptions as well. I DO NOT recommend checking this box as real Funkos are made in China so you will filter out real pops.
  • A lot of people recommend setting this to "US Only" or "North America". Using the filtering above, I recommend leaving it at "Default". Just because a Funko comes from overseas doesn't mean that it is fake and just because it comes from within the US, doesn't mean it is real.
  • Alright looking at our results, the first pop is a reproduction as stated in the title and description with the "RP". (This is something that you can filter out if you'd like)
  • Scrolling through, there are more consistent results of Funko Pops that look strikingly similar to each other and that's a good sign that you are looking at a majority of real Funko's. (This differs greatly depending on piece and rarity though).
  • Find a couple that look legitimate (compared to Funko app or poppriceguide) and open them in more tabs

3. Let's compare

  • So I put these images side by side pulled straight from the ebay listings. Let's start going over the differences.
  • Sticker: The notch in the bottom right corner is supposed to look like it's peeling up. You can see this from poppriceguide.
  • Left hand: Billy's left hand is surprisingly transparent and there is no blood on it.
  • Blood: Speaking of blood, there's a lot on the fake's face, but none on his pants/clothing.
  • Eyes: Although it appears that the fake doesn't have the red rings in his eyes, he actually does. But they are really dark.

4. Thoughts

  • 99.9% of the time when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  • The comparison above is not all inclusive and as more and more fakes are produced, they can change things up (like getting the right sticker or better blood patterns). Sometimes there are other differences found on other parts of the box. This example just talked about the pop and the front of the box.
  • Not all fakes are created equal. Mass produced ones in China will be more common, but there are a few fan created replicas that has more details than the China versions.
  • Always do your research and when in doubt ask. There is a weekly thread posted every Tuesday for people to ask about fakes.
  • Due to eBay/Paypal having your back if you are bait-and-switched or if you do someone receive a non-authentic Funko, I'd recommend eBay. For in-person or Facebook group or anything like that, use Paypal Goods and Services.

5. F.A.Q

  • Q: I don't see any fake eBay listings for 'X' pop. Does that mean I'm safe?
  • A: Kind of... Companies in China are not going to make fakes of all Funkos. They usually try to make the higher end pops. If there isn't listings on eBay, check aliexpress (usually they only have stock photos though). Ask for photos of the pop and closely inspect it with real ones. Although there might not be fakes, that doesn't mean there aren't talented people out there making customs versions that look real enough.
  • Q: Can you write up a specific guide for 'X' pop?
  • A: I actually attempted that and that is how I ended up writing this guide. We all have our own grails and what we want. It's difficult for me to identify all the signs for fakes from series that I don't collect or know nothing about. This is more to assist others in what they're passionate about.
  • Q: What can I do to help the community?
  • A: Well maybe you can write up something similar to a pop you know very well and prevent others from being scammed.
  • Q: Can I post this somewhere else?
  • A: I wouldn't mind as long as it was just a link to this post.

Can mods make this a top post and maybe as we come across or (dreadfully) buy a fake we can just post them here with a pic and start a reference guide here. This may have to be it's own sub maybe?

The reason I created this was because I wasn't sure which pops were faked and which were not and I didn't want to randomly go on a random chase looking. The unfortunate thing is that people will buy fakes not knowing. If they post pictures of their fakes in here, I will happily do some more research and see if I can make something like I did with the Planet Arlia Vegeta guide.

I started my Vader/Anakin pop collection 3 years ago. There are 37 pops total, just 9 remaining! Now I fear I may have some fakes but searching them up, "fake vs real", if found nothing... It did save me money on the holographic 33 one though. But that said, what do I do because not all have the sticker as well? Bought few from eBay/Amazon/Kijiji.

Great post but now I'm just worried and I really want to make sure all are authentic...

Personally I’d suggest spending your money else where. The funko pop hobby isn’t the same as it used to be. I’ve been collecting for years and decided recently to sell off 90% of my collection, around 350 POPs.

If you do want to collect, your best bet is looking at retail stores and local hobby shops as they may offer exclusives. Hot topic, GameStop, MyPOPs etc. Online can be abit challenging but if you can beat bots there’s a few sites to use like funko.com. EBay’s a good site but be cautious when buying higher end ones. Be sure to check how to spot fakes if you can and really compare your photos. I would stay away from marketplace unless you can absolutely tell the difference between authentic and fakes. There’s a very simple way to understand the difference between the two by simple lettering, font, colours, manufacturer date/sticker on bottom of the box.

1 upvotes on reddit
Sudden-Primary-3407 · 6 months ago

There’s groups on Facebook dedicated to solely authenticating pops. Usually, if the price is too good to be true, it most likely isn’t. If buying through eBay, Facebook (reference check) or Mercari, look at reviews to help determine if it’s a trustworthy seller. Can still always get scammed though.

Buy from Funko retailers. Hot Topic, Boxlunch, Target, Walmart, Chalice Collectibles, ToyTemple, vrarestore (slow), Barnes and noble, GameStop, entertainment earth and others.

They seem real. The imagine quality isn't good so I can't see the details to look closer if they're fake but they seem real. Also look if they have a batch number behind. Look at the color of the "POP" sign, the fake ones have a more stronger yellow Color I think? (Idk how to describe it) and the real has a kind of fader shade of yellow. The fakes ones also have a darker color. The figures seem real tho for me

How to identify fake Funko Pops

Key Considerations for Identifying Fake Funko Pops:

  1. Box Quality:

    • Print Quality: Check for sharp, clear printing. Fakes often have blurry text or images.
    • Box Material: Genuine Funko boxes are made of sturdy cardboard. If the box feels flimsy, it might be a fake.
  2. Window Clarity:

    • Plastic Quality: The plastic window should be clear and not cloudy. Fakes may use lower-quality plastic that can appear foggy.
  3. Figure Details:

    • Paint Quality: Inspect the paint job. Authentic Funko Pops have clean lines and consistent paint application. Fakes may have smudges or uneven paint.
    • Mold Quality: Look for any irregularities in the figure's mold. Real Funko Pops have precise details, while fakes may have rough edges or missing details.
  4. Base and Feet:

    • Feet Markings: Check the bottom of the figure. Authentic Pops usually have a stamp with the Funko logo, licensing information, and a unique number. Fakes may lack this or have incorrect markings.
  5. Price and Seller Reputation:

    • Pricing: If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Research typical prices for the specific Pop you’re interested in.
    • Seller Reviews: Buy from reputable sellers or platforms with buyer protection. Check reviews and ratings before making a purchase.
  6. Limited Editions and Exclusives:

    • Research: Familiarize yourself with the specific details of limited edition or exclusive Pops. Fakes often misrepresent these details.

Recommendation: Always compare the item with official images from Funko's website or trusted collector sites. If you're unsure, consider joining Funko collector groups where members can help authenticate items.
