TL;DR
Box Design and Print Quality
One of the most reliable ways to identify fake Funko Pops is by examining the box design and print quality. Fakes often have subtle errors such as incorrect font choices, washed-out colors, or differences in die-cut width [1:1]. The stippling effect in the Pop! logo and gradients can also be off in counterfeit versions
[1:1]. Comparing the box to images from official Funko sources can help spot these discrepancies
[3:1].
Seller Location and Pricing
A common red flag for fake Funko Pops is if they are sold from China [1:1]
[2:6]. Additionally, if a pop has a high market value but is being offered at a significantly lower price, it could be a fake
[1:1]
[2:5]. It's advisable to purchase from reputable sellers with positive feedback ratings
[2:2] and avoid deals that seem too good to be true
[2:3].
Community Resources and Guides
There are several online resources and communities dedicated to identifying fake Funko Pops. Facebook groups focused on real vs. fake pops can provide valuable advice [2:1]. Visual guides and comparison images are also available for specific figures
[4:6]. Searching for "real vs fake" comparisons for specific pops can yield helpful results
[2:4].
Foot Code and Copyright Marks
While some believe checking the foot code or copyright marks can indicate authenticity, it's important to note that fakes often replicate these details accurately [1:1]
[1:2]. Therefore, relying solely on these features may not be sufficient to determine if a Funko Pop is genuine.
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
If you're uncertain about a Funko Pop's authenticity, consider reaching out to the community for a second opinion or consulting detailed guides and videos on identifying fakes [3:9]. Always prioritize buying from authorized retailers or platforms like eBay, which have measures in place to crack down on counterfeit items
[2:3].
They dont say copyright funko on the foot
Actually, a whole lot of them do. 😂
Bruh
A lot of ways. Don’t buy into the whole foot code thing though, that’s the first thing the fakes always get right now. It’s all about the width of the die-cut, differences in font choices, washed out colors from scanning, and things like the stippling effect in the Pop! Logo, or gradients. Some are incredibly close but have small errors. Recently, a lot of high quality fakes have made it to market. The best ways to avoid fakes are to: never buy from China, ever. It’s always a fake. Also, if it has a PPG of $300 you aren’t getting it for $30 online, ever. You might be lucky enough to find one in some rogue store on a shelf that no one cares about, but it’s highly unlikely. You should expect to pay $250+ for a $300 PPG pop. If the price is too good to be true, it’s because it is.
Ya ones from China are the first sign
I'm in such a huge funko pop phase but I've been looking through eBay for funko pops and I have no idea how to tell if it's real or fake? Honestly I'm not entirely sure it matters all that much to me but I'm just very confused and was wondering if anyone had tips on how to avoid buying fake funko pops
Edit: the seller I'm looking has a funko authorization. Does that make it better?
Just like with anything, first check the seller's feedback rating. If they have even a small past history of selling questionable items, proceed with caution. Next, if the Pop you're looking at is a fairly common Pop, you shouldn't have to worry too much about fakery. People aren't going to waste their time making copies of something that's already plentiful in availability. It's the more rare and sought-after ones you need to look out for, like chases. Finally, just simply do your homework. Do Google searches for the item in question, and see what a real one undoubtedly looks like.
Also, check the price. If they're offering a usually high price item for an unbeatable bargain low price, it could be too good to be true.
Just check the seller ratings/reviews. If someone is out there trying to sell fakes, I'm sure Ebay would crack down on them quick. Technically, Ebay itself is an authorized Funko retailer. You should only question if it's fake if you're going to spend hundreds of dollars on a grail. Commons and even exclusives aren't worth faking. Please beware of replica from China. They usually specify, but if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Example: a grail selling for $30 when it's value is over $500
You can always google “real vs fake _____ funko”. If it’s a grail it’ll likely have a review or several lol. But you can likely trust Funko retail sellers
i woundnt purchase outside your own country and buy NOTHING from china.
oddly enough i’ve had sellers that the listing was in the states where i live then the tracking for the item starts in mexico or somewhere else. i immediately start a dispute with the seller through ebay and ive always had ebay back me in those instances.
There's a facebook group that is dedicated to real vs fake pops, might want to join up to get advice on some, especially pricier ones
I hear this is one of the most faked figures in the community. I believe this one to be a fake, but I want to learn how to check it myself.
It's fake ....
Me pointing at the price
Yeah obviously but is there ways you can look at the box and tell it’s fake?
There is but sometimes the community won’t want to tell if someone ask that question they could be the ones selling a fake and trying to fix any “mistakes” 🤷♂️. Just look up how to tell if it’s fake takes like 3 min
Dude don't pay 150 on a boot. You can get this a lot cheaper
I would never buy a fake but I want to learn how to tell if figures are faked
Google.
The eyes are off. Look closely it’s clear because of all the little difference kinda of an ass fake. Goodluck
besides the price, its honestly kind of hard to tell from the pic alone tbh
I second that (or 3rd?). Gotta get yourself as much info from the seller as possible.
What I’m saying
You seem like a charming person to talk to.
Use your eyes? Compare it to pictures off the funko site?
This funko specifically looks like it was melted. It also looks like they’re holding a light under it. I’ve never seen a funko glow that vibrantly. The proportions are awful. It’s got bug eyes
Hope this helps:
Alright so you're interested in purchasing a pop, but you're worried you might be buying a fake. If you're looking for a non-authentic pop to add to your collection, that is fine and I have nothing against that. This is for the people who are spending full price on a pop and hopefully avoiding getting a fake in return. For the purposes of the information below, I will refer to all fake variants (custom, "China version", ect) as simply fakes.
1. Let's find some fakes on eBay
2. Now to find some real ones to compare
3. Let's compare

Can mods make this a top post and maybe as we come across or (dreadfully) buy a fake we can just post them here with a pic and start a reference guide here. This may have to be it's own sub maybe?
The reason I created this was because I wasn't sure which pops were faked and which were not and I didn't want to randomly go on a random chase looking. The unfortunate thing is that people will buy fakes not knowing. If they post pictures of their fakes in here, I will happily do some more research and see if I can make something like I did with the Planet Arlia Vegeta guide.
I started my Vader/Anakin pop collection 3 years ago. There are 37 pops total, just 9 remaining! Now I fear I may have some fakes but searching them up, "fake vs real", if found nothing... It did save me money on the holographic 33 one though. But that said, what do I do because not all have the sticker as well? Bought few from eBay/Amazon/Kijiji.
Great post but now I'm just worried and I really want to make sure all are authentic...
Very nice and well-thought out guide. Personally though I prefer to just avoid all situations where I could be sold a fake (even if it basically restricts me to getting newer Pops).
Thank you. I understand your stance in that and I respect that.
Thanks for this, eBay is flooded with possible fake Pikachus and I really want to find a real one.
Completely understandable. You're very welcome.
Here is a visual guide I just made for metallic Beerus, since the new fakes look identical to real except for 1 tell.
Thank you. I will add this.
Let’s slap this bad boy on the fridge.
I know this is old af and youre a great individual but can I send you a few pops to validate? Not sure if they made any fake ones as Ai said they did lol
By all means you can! Funko themselves doesn't produce fake pops but other companies and factories do to grab a quick buck.
Could you help me with something? I wanna know if this Funko is fake or not. I’m seeing two different things.
There both real but I’d go with the first link
I'm meeting Nick Frost in a month or two and really want him to be able to sign a funko pop for me and I thought this might be the best fit but I have terrible anxiety and always like having a second opinion from the community so what do you think? It looks legit enough to me...
There are Donald Duck 31 floating around. Is it supposed to have 'Disney store' logo specifically? The ones I see being sold only have 'Disney'.
So they have both! The Disney store one is harder to find because it was exclusive to that store, and the 'disney' logo is still legit, just the more general release.
Yeah it was strange that there are two. Me thinking one is fake.
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for this guide - really useful and helped me today to work out that a Funko I bought was (I think!) a fake - brilliant job!
Thank you so much- Happy to help!
Hey everyone, just beginning to get into funkos. What is the best way to make sure you aren’t getting the real thing an not a fake?
Personally I’d suggest spending your money else where. The funko pop hobby isn’t the same as it used to be. I’ve been collecting for years and decided recently to sell off 90% of my collection, around 350 POPs.
If you do want to collect, your best bet is looking at retail stores and local hobby shops as they may offer exclusives. Hot topic, GameStop, MyPOPs etc. Online can be abit challenging but if you can beat bots there’s a few sites to use like funko.com. EBay’s a good site but be cautious when buying higher end ones. Be sure to check how to spot fakes if you can and really compare your photos. I would stay away from marketplace unless you can absolutely tell the difference between authentic and fakes. There’s a very simple way to understand the difference between the two by simple lettering, font, colours, manufacturer date/sticker on bottom of the box.
There’s groups on Facebook dedicated to solely authenticating pops. Usually, if the price is too good to be true, it most likely isn’t. If buying through eBay, Facebook (reference check) or Mercari, look at reviews to help determine if it’s a trustworthy seller. Can still always get scammed though.
Buy from Funko retailers. Hot Topic, Boxlunch, Target, Walmart, Chalice Collectibles, ToyTemple, vrarestore (slow), Barnes and noble, GameStop, entertainment earth and others.
They seem real. The imagine quality isn't good so I can't see the details to look closer if they're fake but they seem real. Also look if they have a batch number behind. Look at the color of the "POP" sign, the fake ones have a more stronger yellow Color I think? (Idk how to describe it) and the real has a kind of fader shade of yellow. The fakes ones also have a darker color. The figures seem real tho for me
I just bought them this morning. Fingers crossed all is ok 😭🤞
Wish you luck haha😭
There are Deathnote funko pops, not sure if those are the real ones or not though
Irrelevant but it would be smart to have Ryuk on top since he is the observer.
I personally picture Ryuk as a bottom but that’s just me
rlly i figured hed be a top lol

Ask on r/Funko or r/Funko_Pop. There are people out there who know how to recognize scams
ECCC MCU WW2 Captain America from a few years ago has a good number of fakes running around. Makes me weary of getting one, even if I follow all the real-vs-fake guides.
Hard to tell nowadays a lot of fakes are getting good
Some asshole on Mercari was selling a crap ton of them, he had no reviews and no prior sales. Selling about 10 of them for about 65 each along with Iron man 2 pops, I called him out on those letting him know iron man doesn't have the machine gun on shoulder like war machine, he deleted the listings afterwards
Walmart is overrun with 3rd party sellers now, and they're selling Breaking Bads, Eddie Munsons, SDCC season 1 beat-up Steve from Stranger Things, the aforementioned Cap, Blacklight Spider-Man, and of course, Upside-Down Spider-Man and John Wick (Bloody). I'm out of the game like Fredo. They ain't pulling me back in because JUST when I think I'm out... Oh, and Scarface is another one! I've been on with Walmart all day and night trying to nail down the jerks we could identify. But I bet you anything in existence that it will still be overrun with Eddies from China for $25 each, Heisenberg at like, $40? It's obscene, and it's gonna Beanie Baby Funkos.
Think there’s a selling group going on Mercari bunch of fake accounts selling a lot of counterfeit Funkos and people falling for it because of the prices.
I'm glad I got a Ghost Face years ago, they're so many fakes of him now
I see so many Ghost Faces on Mercari like thousands are sold each week
Just have a good at Ali express all are fake on there even commons
Ya it’s unfortunate but I’ve seen the comparison and you can tell right away it’s a fake lol
Yeah but if it's bad lighting it would be a bit hard to tell
I fell for the OG Trafalgar Law pop.
Does it glow tho?
I'm new in collecting Funko Pops and have seen some fake pops being sold online. Wondering if we have some kind of list with pics so we can be aware before buying. Here's an example. The X'ed part should be a hole with the transparent cover.
It’s just a stock image, it’s a render, not a real photo so it’s not always 100% accurate
im trying to buy the target exclusive pikachu somewhere but i dont know which ones are authentic could someone point me in the right direction
I’ve seen a bunch of DBZ fakes that have the “M” in ANIMATION that’s wrong. The center of the M should not go all the way down. Many fakes don’t have the exact font so there M meets the bottom of the text at its center.
If it's from china and the price is low it is someplace you should not go.
If the color is off give it a scoff.
If the box number is off center its an auction you should not enter.
If there's a stripe through the logo, the sale is a no-go.
I’d buy using PayPal if you’re on the fence with a pop due to their protection policy.
https://i.imgur.com/aGhkCwp.jpg Just saw this this morning
That’s a pretty good fake to be honest. If it is lol
A lot of genuine pops do say “made in China” though. So the “made in China” on bottom of the box doesn’t mean it’s a fake
