How to Improve in Rocket League

TL;DR

  • Practice consistently, focus on mechanics and game sense, and seek feedback from experienced players.

Consistent Practice

One of the most emphasized strategies for improving in Rocket League is consistent practice. Spending time in free play and training modes allows you to develop car control and ball handling skills [1:2][3:2]. Practicing daily can help you build muscle memory for various maneuvers and improve your overall gameplay [4:1].

Mechanics and Game Sense

Improving your mechanics and game sense is crucial. This includes learning rotations, positioning, and how to read the game [3:1]. Practicing specific mechanics like dribbling, aerial shots, and ground shots can significantly enhance your ability to score and defend [2:5][4:2]. Watching tutorials on these topics can provide valuable insights into advanced techniques [5:4].

Feedback and Analysis

Seeking feedback from higher-ranked players can be incredibly beneficial. Uploading your replays to platforms like YouTube and asking for critiques can highlight areas for improvement [1:1]. Analyzing your gameplay and identifying mistakes can help you refine your strategy and decision-making [3:4].

Fun and Variety

While focusing on improvement, it's important to keep the game fun. Playing different modes like hoops or dropshot can help develop specific skills while keeping the experience enjoyable [5:2]. Setting personal goals during casual games can also make practice more engaging [1:2].

Tools and Resources

Utilizing tools like Bakkesmod can offer additional ways to train and customize your practice sessions [1:10]. Exploring workshop maps and plugins can provide unique challenges and help you work on specific aspects of your gameplay [1:5].

Hey fellas. This has probably been asked a million and a half times, but what’s the best way to improve my rocket league game? I already spend at least an hour everyday in free play and doing training packs and have watched lots of tutorials on improving rotation etc. what else can I do ?

Nwhite32 · 6 years ago

I would get the workshop maps for dribbling, air dribbling, skate park, ECT and just have fun with it, practice car control. You can run the same training over until you hit insane freestyle shots left and right, but in game your never going to have the same speed, and angle setup as practice so you'll throw it every time. Knowing how to rotate and angle your car how you want it through muscle memory is important. Another thing is when you play games set daily goals. Give your self an objective to run in casual. Wether it's getting 5 wall shots, air dribbles, certain flicks your working on, whatever it may be

Conventional practice methods help you learn basics and it sounds like you have been doing that a lot already. Something I recently started practicing more of is practicing stupid highly mechanical things.

Few examples would be: flip into every ball in Free play but you need to try to have your butt touch the ball; hold drift and try to push the ball around the map as slow as you can; try to tap the top of the ball with each corner of the car; watch a YouTube video and try to just touch the ball while your focus is on the video.

The better you get at doing stupid things, the better you will be at the simple things.

sethavallone · OP · 6 years ago

I actually already do the drift one, but I’ll give the others a try! Sounds like fun

1 upvotes on reddit
thr3midgets · 6 years ago

Could try expert mode for the drifting and touch it with the left side of your car to push it right then the right side of your car to push it left(car would need to be backwards when you touch it). I also spend most of my free play sessions trying to air dribble. I have seen a major improvement for that after a long time. I am now usually able to air dribble it halfway up into the opposite wall I jumped off of.

There's a defender plugin that, in freeplay and when launched, keeps pounding the goal with shots and you have to block them, working on your goaltending skills and recovery and placement. It helped me improve so much.

And there are so many other interesting things with this mod, as for instance the randomization of training packs and variation too (the shots are not always in the same order and the ball not always arriving at the same speed and angle).

One thing that I've found probably most helpful is having other higher ranked players critique your replays. Upload a replay to YouTube and then post it in /r/RocketLeagueAnalysis. Good luck buddy!

You just need to play for fun for now because the early ranks are the best.

Only advice I’d give is to turn camera shake off, put your camera settings on something like 110 fov, 270 distance, 110 height. Also if you play on controller bind boost to LB or RB you’ll thank yourself down the line.

5 upvotes on reddit
aternativ · 1 year ago

i'm not very high rank but idk about boost on LB/RB, later down the line they might want to use those for air roll, but it's a little gamble either way

justtttry · 1 year ago

Air roll isn’t mandatory to be on the bumpers lmfao. More players have air roll on square if anything.

Boost on bumper is super easy to get used to and it uses a finger which isn’t already taken. Many pros and higher rated players use this. I also use this and it is very nice to use.

I'm trying man but I can hardly get ball touches let alone score. Can you give me a guide to get better at movement?

TheFamus · 1 year ago

I'll say this as someone who has played for years and just started taking it seriously in January. I climbed from platinum to champ solo. The biggest thing that helped was freeplay followed by shot practice from many many different spots. Nothing mechanical, just hit ball into top half of the net. No repeating shots or anything. Just 1 touch. It helped a ton with just getting the ball into the net or on target or pressure.

Ground shots was a good one that I did.

Other than that choose something you WANT to learn. Not have to or anything, just something you want to know how to do, flip resets, double taps, horse dashes, whatever it is. That helped me keep my sanity with the hundreds of hours of practice.

Besides that it really is what people are saying and it requires many many hours in freeplay to be able to consistently do it in game with confidence. I'm nearing 2500hrs (probably more) but this is what helped me climb.

Other than that, replay reviews are good, just know you'll see yourself do things that will make you cringe but take notes about what you need to improve on and work on those. You'll typically go down before you go up but once you go up you should pass your old rank with the new found skills.

One thing that helped me as well was just something someone told me "stay in the play, get in their way" it's better to be creating pressure and staying with your teammate than it is rotate out of the play. The worst thing is having no pressure and giving them a free play on the ball. It's what helped me push through diamond was people lacking pressure and just giving me the ball.

But take this for what it is. I'm only champ and still have a long way to go

Just think about what part kf your hitbox hits the car. Try to hit the ball with the corner of your car fo hit it hard. There are specific parts of your car to get a soft controlled touch too that you should practice, but for now just focus on the corner of your car.

Sit in practice and keep on hitting the mf ball HEAD ON until you understand what it takes to hit the ball. Play around with different button layouts online and find what’s most comfortable for you. Once you know how to use the tools given to you, you will then get a feel for for the game. I been playing since 2018 and only recently learned a basic air dribble off the wall. Movement took me years to develop because I’m slow but I still play it because it’s fun. The learning curve is different for everyone but once you can make things happen it becomes addicting.

Go sit in freeplay and practice hitting the ball around. There isn’t really a guide to improve, more or less just some things most players learn at certain ranks.

Play 1v1 or play free play so you can hit the ball more. Do beginner training, watch YouTube videos for beginners.

3 games? That is really nothing, remember it's a game, especially in 1s, no one is relying on you so you have no pressure to have to perform. Just get in there and go for it. I hate 1s but it's great warmup and even I hop in there. I still played probably 100-150 games last season of 1s (with a total of 1400ish games)

Devote daily time to practicing. Car control should be your bread and butter. At bronze I would mostly be practicing in training packs and free play. Just go in to free play and practice hitting the ball around and following it with good touches at speed. You will quickly get used to how your car moves. Playing games is also helpful but you will see the biggest improvements from the constant repetition you can get in training.

Get a structured training program, spend a minimum of 30 minutes a day running drills for the basics of the game. I can give you mine if you want. I started in season one, went from gold to diamond in one season. Now my goal is getting champ this season, and I contribute it all to a structured plan.

Focus on the basics, watch your replays and critique yourself, watch pros play, and be consistent. You got this

I’ve started playing Rocket League to make my boyfriend happy. Advice on how to get better?

Posted by AnnaSormai · in r/RocketLeague · 2 months ago

My boyfriend is having a really low period right now and I’ve found lately that one of the things that lifts his mood is when we play Rocket League together — he really enjoys it.

Honestly, I don’t find it very easy at all and I’m not very good. I’m struggling to improve and any advice or guidance would be really appreciated! I find that I button mash and always hit the ball wrong when I’m playing, plus I always miss aerial shots. It may sound silly but I really want to get better for our games together so any advice would be gratefully appreciated!!

Honestly, spending a lot of time in freeplay is one of the best ways to get better, especially for beginners. Just take it slow and focus on the absolute basics. Things like driving into the ball and hitting it across the field while trying to make it go where you want it to go, trying to slowly dribble/control the ball when it's in front of and on top of your car, learning how to get strong power shots off a bouncing ball. Even things like just driving around the field and smoothly jumping onto/off the wall, drifting to quickly make your car face a different direction, learning to half flip, learning small boost pad pathings, and just jumping in the air and trying to not let your car fall onto the ground. You can do things like jumping from one side of the field and trying to aim for a specific spot on the opposite wall. All these little drills will train your muscle memory and get you more familiar with how to control your car and the ball, which is fundamentally what the game is about.

There’s definitely ways you can speed up the process of getting better. However, the biggest thing is just time spent playing the game. Getting used to your car and how it moves, whilst simultaneously learning game sense. I wish you luck, very kind of you to be doing this for your boyfriend.

The most important thing is to just have fun together. Try to get better if you want, but don’t get burnt out on it playing solo.

scartol · 2 months ago

This. I’ve got 5000 hours in the game, /u/AnnaSormai .. and I’m barely Diamond 1.

But I loooove the game. If you can have fun most of the time — and don’t take it too seriously, then it can be amazing.

Hopefully your special gentleman friend can do the same thing, and you can have a great time together.

I’d stay away from ranked; most people have a hard time keeping things in perspective when rank is on the line.

GLHF!

It's not you, the game is actually hard. Getting the timing right to hit the ball is a challenge for someone new to the game. To progress fast you need to put time in daily.

Here's an eight week plan for you.

Week 1

Look up a tutorial about game settings. Go in freeplay or a bot match and just focus on hitting the ball and making it go where you want.

Week 2

Once you can do step 1 consistently, focus on improving your game sense: watch YouTube tutorials on back post rotation, double commit, cutting in, corner strategies. Different videos have different interpretations so watch more than one to get a rounded understanding.

Week 6

Now you know how to hit the ball and where to be, the next step is to learn how to hit the ball with power. Look up powershots.

Knowing how to be in the right place at the right time and being able to hit the ball with purpose will make you a great teammate regardless of how new you are to the game.

The final piece of advice, take your time with each step. Don't expect instant improvement it takes weeks, months and years.

If you play the other game modes. I.e. hoops, hockey, dropshot. It will help u get good at different aspects. Such as hoops can get u better at air shots. Havent played it in a while so I forgot what the other one is called but the one with abilities does not improve a skill for the actual game. But I would say the other 3 do

1 upvotes on reddit
Qmorn · 5 years ago

Snowday is even worse than rumble to practise normal rl since you don't even have a ball. And dropshot and hoops suck too since the map is completely different.

My tip is, go into some ranked 2s games and play until u have a decent amount of hours in the game. There is other way to get better than spending time.

1 upvotes on reddit
BigCass · 5 years ago

Plays 3s so you are not afraid to try things you are not fully confident doing because in 1s or 2s just one miss will most likely cost you a goal and it will make you hesitant. You shouldn't be hesitant if you are trying to get a better hang of the game.

It's mostly time put in and how you learn from your mistakes. Don't ballchase or cut in front of teammates, learn how to rotate and get comfortable handling the ball and shot accuracy. I have 600+ hours and I hit diamond a couple months ago. There's a crazy high skill cap so don't let slow progression get to you, good luck!

I love rocket League but i can’t improve

Rocket League is one of my favorites video games, i also watch a lot of content about the game. I play for an hour in the evening nearly every day.

I did some basic training packs but they haven’t helped me much. I wish i could improve and become consistent even with the simpliest mechanics. I struggle at dribbling and in the air i struggle to control the car and direct the shots. I only learned some things about rotation but i’m hardstuck at gold 2

Spend the time you do have focusing on ONE thing to improve at a time. Before going into every game tell yourself you’re going to focus on hitting the ball HARD.

After you feel like you’ve improved at that, focus all your playtime on improving your recoveries, then whatever you want after that. Fast aerials, half flips, 50s, patience, positioning, etc.

Maximize your limited playtime in this way and you will see improvement.

Hey everyone, I recently started playing Rocket League and I’m really enjoying it so far. I’ve mostly been playing casual matches and training a bit, but I’m starting to feel stuck and would really appreciate some guidance.

My biggest struggle right now is anything related to the ball being in the air. I find it really hard to judge where it’s going to land or how fast it’s moving, and I almost always miss it when I try to go for an aerial hit.

Are there any specific training packs or drills that helped you get better?Or Are there other ways to learn the fundamentales of e.g. air dribble?

Any tips or advice are welcome! Thanks in advance 😊

It sounds like you're quite a way from learning air dribbles right now, since they are really a combination of lots of fundamental skills that it sounds like you currently don't have.

First step is hitting the ball in the air. Do the aerial training packs that come with the game. Move up when you can hit every ball into the net.

Long time player - I need to "get good." Best places to learn?

Posted by Manny631 · in r/RocketLeague · 3 months ago

I started playing Rocket League many, many years ago when it came to Xbox. I got a bit better over time, but nothing crazy or where I feel I should be. A couple of seasons ago I got FPS fatigue and needed something else, so I jumped back on Rocket League and I'm still at about the same skill level (Gold, sometimes low Platinum).

I can't dribble, or even start to. I tried in the training area and it didn't go well.

I have a hard time hitting off the wall, like at all... Even on the lower portions.

I can use the boost and sometimes get an aerial hit, but it's messy and a crapshoot if it goes where I want it to. And it's a one time hit, no juggling or whatever.

I know I'll never be a pro player, but I do want to get better and I know I can't do that without guidance. I tried some in game stuff and it didn't help that much. I'm sure there's more tools than I am aware of.

Just peaked in diamond, coaching videos helped me a lot to understand rotation( Razmeltor helped me a lot but it is in french), also installing bakkesmod was a big step for me in training

One thing i do now, and for me this is the most important when i want to play on ranked, i go for a training with training packs on saves, redirect and shots,i train for maybe 15 min and it helps to connect my old head with my old hands lol

Also,in 3vs3 at you level, doing nothing and letting your teammates go full berserk in attack will often lead to a win, this is really boring but i got to plat 1 to plat 3 and D1 in a few weeks with this

all depends on you and how you grasp the game. camera settings are very important. rotations and back post rotations specifically are all important. you do not need to be super mechanical and flashy to rank up. youtube for tutorials and training for free play and training packs for specific shots will be your best friend. and most importantly enjoy the game and ignore all the toxic people :)

    • Study professional players through streams or recorded matches.
    • Analyze their positioning, decision-making, and mechanics.
  3. Play with Purpose:

    • Set specific goals for each session (e.g., improving aerial accuracy or boost management).

    • Develop a sense of teamwork and positioning to support each other.
  5. Replay Analysis:

    • Review your own gameplay to identify mistakes and areas for improvement.
    • Look for patterns in your playstyle that may need adjustment.
