Improving Map Awareness in League of Legends

TL;DR

  • Increase minimap size for better visibility.
  • Use auditory cues like pings to remind you to check the map.
  • Practice consciously checking the map until it becomes a habit.

Minimap Size and Visibility

One of the most straightforward methods to improve map awareness is to increase the size of your minimap. Many players have found that enlarging the minimap makes it easier to notice movements and changes at a glance [2:1][4:1][5:1]. This adjustment can be made in the game's configuration files, and some players recommend setting it to a scale of 1.5 to 2.0 for optimal visibility [4:1].

Auditory Cues and Habit Formation

Using auditory cues can also aid in developing map awareness. Increasing the volume of pings or using a timer that beeps every few seconds can serve as reminders to check the map [3:1][2:4]. Consistently practicing these checks will eventually turn them into a habit [1:4][5:6].

Role-Specific Strategies

Playing roles such as jungle or support can naturally enhance map awareness due to their gameplay mechanics. Junglers often need to keep track of enemy positions and pathing, which encourages frequent map checks [1:2][2:2]. Support roles also provide downtime to monitor the map and assist teammates with useful pings [1:5][4:4].

Conscious Effort and Multitasking

Making a conscious effort to look at the map after specific actions, such as last-hitting minions, can help integrate map checks into your routine [4:3][3:3]. Additionally, playing games that require multitasking, like RTS games, can improve overall awareness and reaction times [5:7].

Communication and Team Play

Actively communicating with your team by pinging enemy locations and potential threats can reinforce your own map awareness while helping your teammates [5:2]. This practice not only benefits your personal gameplay but also enhances team coordination and response to enemy movements.

How do I get better map awareness?

ORIGINAL POST

I'm in bronze and I want to get better.. but I get camped because my map awareness is hot garbage. I'll notice pings from friendly laners for like 10 minutes but it's almost as if my brain tunes them out unless i'm specifically remembering they exist, which 9 times out of 10 I don't. I also have trouble peering at the minimap, no matter how hard I try. When I played call of duty though, that's all I would do. Any tips?

Play jungle for a while, with healthy champs (WW, Nunu, Shyvana). You'll be able to look at the map a lot more and to find out the opportunities that you miss often.

This doesn’t translate into being able to watch the map while trading and csing.

As a jungler, trust me. Laning is way more focus intensive than pathing is. That’s why I am so helpful and ping every enemies lane movements to help you.

You have to practice doing it in lane.

The point is that he does not know how to look at the map at all.

That's why a position where he only has to focus on the map is great to begin, translation will be smoother in my opinion.

This, or support, support also has good downtime in which you can watch the map and do helpful pings for info for other lanes (if you spotted enemy jungle, etc.)

The way to get better is to make th conscious decision to watch the map. Before you start a game, tell yourself that map awareness is what you are going to focus on. Put a note above your monitor to remind you if you have to. You just have to consistently tell yourself to make it into a conscious decision until it becomes a habit.

Best advice for anything. Keep focusing on it even if you don’t do as well in other areas and eventually it’ll be a habit then you go 1 by 1 and eventually everything becomes habit

you can increase its size for easier noticing (look at the tutorial on yt)

Try twisted fate. And always buy control ward

You can increase ping volume and lower music.

Map awareness is something that comes naturally though with macro and when you master your champion though because you no longer have to focus so hard on last hitting, trading or wave manipulation.

Play jungle.

It’ll help you pay attention to the map while doing mindless stuff like that waiting at your tower or pathing to lane.

Just a few rounds to get the hang of it and build good habits.

Look at the map, know where the jungler started and his possible pathing. Put deep wards so you can spot them out early.

Best tip I got on that is from JollyJaegger.

Have a timer (there's a mp3 for that you can get on YouTube) that beeps every 5 or so second. Every time it beeps, look at your map and try to figure out where everyone is. After a while you will do it naturally.

Theres a lot of time during laning phase when you dont need to look at where your cursor is. Even in teamfights or skirmishes you can look at the map while your basic attack is flying and youre kiting back.

The best tip so far though is this; change your map size to at least 200 or 250. This will look awkward at first but will 100% make your map awareness better.

This pc —>C:user —> league of legends folder —> config —> persistedsettings —> open with notebook —> ctrl+f —> type in ”mapscale” —> change value from 1.000 to 2.500 or 2.000

And no, its not bannable nor is it against the ToS in any way.

If I dont remember the route correctly (not on pc rn), just search that on youtube.

How do I improve my map awareness?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/summonerschool · 6 years ago

I'm trying to force myself to look at the map every 10 secs or so, but I often go for minutes without paying any attention and then realize that my jungler just died right next to my lane.

I've been trying to get better at this for a long time now but I can't seem to improve at all. As jungler this is much easier, because last hitting isn't an issue but this skill doesn't transfer to lane.

Do i just need to get more experience or are there any specific ways to improve map awareness.

I played a lot of ranked team 3v3 before it was removed, and while flex 3s isn’t as good it is still a good way to learn because it’s a smaller, faster map with fighting all the time and no wards. You have to constantly be watching the map or you’re going to lose. I found that after getting to plat MMR my map awareness on SR was much better...

Google a metronome that matches the frequency in which you want to look at your map.

For example, “6 beats per minute” would have you looking at the map once every 10 seconds.

Keep your sound on high so you hear pings. Don’t play with music. Try and get in the habit of pinging whenever you look and see the enemy jungler even when it’s obvious where he is. This gets you in the habit of looking at the map and when your team hears you pinging they’ll look as well

One of the things that helped me was playing support when passive heal/shield supports were top tier. Given you're not having to focus on csing looking around the map for ganks or roams that may be coming is easier. Do it for a while and it starts to become a habit. Even know if I start feeling like I'm not watching the map enough I'll play a few support games to get back in that mindset.

Have you tried to make your minimap obnoxiously huge? You should at least have it set to 1.5 to 2.0 for a time.

https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/4iwkf4/how_to_increase_minimap_size_beyond_100/

Another thing I advise is to start pinging players on the map. Anytime you see the enemy jungler on your minimap ping him. Anytime you see another champ not directly in their lane (mid heading to scuttle) ping it. If you get into the habit of pinging these things then by default you will be aware of them. The repeated conscious effort to notice them is going to help you a lot in your awareness of what's going on.

You can also spend some time noticing where minion waves are on the map. If top lane is pushed and the top laner is missing then he could be doing a whole lot of things, backing to base, rift herald, jg camps, scuttle, or even attempting a gank. It's easy to see your minion waves so notice where you position yourself when going for cs. If you are seeing the opponent start getting closer then pull back because its a signal to you that a jg gank could be coming.

If you have any trouble just ask. It's not too difficult to get to the config. Just make sure you set it to read only, the reason you have to do this is because when you start LoL it's just going to overwrite it with default minimap size.

Hi everyone, I am a low-elo Jungle main trying to re-learn ADC. For some reason, when I play ADC (or any other laning role) my map awareness is super trash, and I make a lot of really bad plays and have inted entire lanes because of it. What is the best way to get into the habit of looking at the map more often to avoid this? I feel like this is my main issue in the role and I would improve a lot just by fixing this.

One thing I found to be helpful was playing around the enemy jungle. If you're constantly planning based on where they are, you'll naturally look at the map to get new information.

3 upvotes on reddit
Sahsaha · 6 years ago

It's also helpful to tell others where enemy jungler is when you see them, especially in low elo if nobody looks at minimap... Pinging lanes that might get ganked does wonders, especially if I ping and they die right after, as next time they are very likely to listen.

Especially your jungler, will really appreciate it.

Increase the minimap size if you're on a high-resolution monitor will help. It takes practice to form a habit of looking at the minimap once in a while 10sec+-~. So IMO just practice and force yourself to look at the minimap.

With the map taking up more space I naturally notice it more easily in the corner of my eye whenever there's movement on it and I switch between looking at the enemy laner and looking at the map every couple seconds because I can autopilot lasthitting

I recommand coach curtis video about map awarness.

TLDR : You need to keep certain moment of the game for looking at the map. Exemple : after a trade you don't have to watch for pvp stuff, so you can keep your mind on minimap for like the next 6-10sec.

Doing some farming drill will also free your mind from this aspect of the game so you can focus on other aspects.

How to have better map awareness?

Posted by Deckarddd · in r/summonerschool · 3 years ago

Hi,

I'm trying so hard to always look at my minimap and even using F keys sometimes. But there's always a couple seconds when my brain concentrates on farm or trading and I loose track of enemy jungle and I'm getting ganked. It seems unacceptable to be ganked after enemy jungle shows on a minimap but at the same time it's a matter of a second sometimes when this little icon shows up and disappears on a map. I usually win lane when I'm focused on cs and trading but then I don't know what's happening on the map. If I constantly staring at the map - I loose lane and cs. I don't know how to find that balance.

Also I have really difficult time keeping track of everyone in a big teamfights. I can't take my eyes off the action to see on the minimap that someone is flanking.

I guess it's a matter of experience but I've had around 200 games in pre season (before that I haven't played for 2 years). So maybe you have some advice.

Thank you.

I think the general rule is to look at the map after every cs. When it come it’s teamfights, just make a habit of thinking “okay three of five people are here so who’s missing” or “they have a zed on their team so where will he try to flank.” It can be difficult and it might feel unsafe to be looking at map during a fight, but at least look at the map after an enemy has been killed to gauge where the rest of team is if you can’t see them on your cam. It’s just practice.

Mindpurrr · 3 years ago

Might sound a little silly, but increase the size of your minimap. Keep looking at it. Practice with a timer in laning phase. Set it to maybe 5 seconds interval or so. Every time it beeps, you look at your minimap and/or your teammates and look at what is going on.

I die most time cuz of not looking at map sometimes and most of the time miss good skirmishes cuz of it. Truth to be told,i do buy control wards on my backs but it just stays in my inventory sometimes for half the game.im still S4(not the greatest rank),and am kind of serious to improve on my basics so, if possible, your help would be appreciated.

Go to practice tool, do a CS drill, you must watch map between every CS and ping something on it in lanes other than yours (enemy missing, danger, whatever) untill it becomes muscle memory for your eyes while of course not having lower cs than usual at 10 mins

I lived by Elyndar's guide to CS'ing in like Season 3-4, and it's still absolutely one of the best CS / lane practice guides ever made. I usually get to Masters and then chill the rest of the season but that guide refined all of my fundamentals when I first started caring about climbing.

One of the steps is incorporating checking the map at set intervals. Unfortunately not everything is relevant anymore, but step 7 covers the map awareness portion. Give the whole thing a read, and incorporate as much as you can.

Some people use a metronome to set a "timer" of when they should look at map, once it becomes habit you can drop the metronome.

I'd say you can skip the parts about adding bots - the bots suck, and all they do is run at you most of the time rather than behave like a human, but you could try it once and see if you want to practice like that or not.

I recommend Curtis's My No.1 Advice For Reducing Gank Deaths
https://youtu.be/6EWqSFnDsdg?si=1Ndd_8D-FzDG-qAE

Basically know what to look for first. Make a mental checklist.
Ex. you need to check if Pyke missing more often than Lulu. Respect lv3 Nunu more than lv3 Evelynn
+ the more you comfortable with your champ/the matchup the more you have time to look at your mental checklist. Know that and play accordingly. Ex. If you're not used to play as Jayce vs Akali you'll likely have less time to think about roaming support, ganking jungle, etc

Minimap awareness is hard– and it's so frustrating to learn it!

Posted by PixelVoyager_1 · in r/supportlol · 3 months ago

TL;DR: Managing your Map awareness is key to become good at League, I'm building a tool to help you learn this fast. Feel free to try it out!

Hey everyone,

One thing probably everyone kows is how overwhelming it can be to constantly check the minimap.

As you improve, more and more layers get added: wave management, enemy cooldowns, map awareness, power spikes, teamfight positioning, timers, win conditions, bounties...

Eventually, there is so much to handle that it get's hard to keep track of the minimap as well. And this is where the challenge starts.

And the truth is, it is all about building habits, and that takes a lot of time.

But what if you could accelerate that?

I’ve been working on a tool that helps players build their minimap awareness faster. You get precise in-game reminders for different aspects of the game, so you naturally start looking for the minimap at the right time. Think of it like training wheels for your brain.

It’s still early, but it’s already helped me and some friends improve with less pain than usual. If you’re interested, happy to share it with you or get feedback from the community (DM or comment)!

I'm working for some months now on an app, that helps players improve in League. I believe, becoming good at League could be way easier if we all had the right tools for it! I'm trying to build them, and I'm more than happy to also get new inspiration for this project.

Cheers!

Tip for increasing map awareness.

Posted by lshiyou · in r/summonerschool · 7 years ago

Quick tip that might help some people increase their map awareness.

Play twisted treeline with your game muted (or SR, but TT is a littler easier to keep track of everything).

Not sure if this will help anyone, but I've been doing it a lot recently just out of curiosity, and I've found it helps me pay more attention to my minimap and my teammates. Not being able to hear pings or general SFX forces me to be more aware of what's going on and I find myself checking the rest of the map more often. Kind of develops a habit that has carried over to my ranked games.

Hope this helps. GLHF.

I would never recommend playing with your sound off.

Sound can be an important indicator of certain things going on in the game. For instance, you might hear the shaco poof before you see it thus giving you the extra few milliseconds you need to react.

Look at the map as you attack to CS. That’s actually helpful.

how to improve map awareness in league of legends

Key Considerations for Improving Map Awareness in League of Legends:

  1. Regularly Check the Mini-Map:

    • Make it a habit to glance at the mini-map every few seconds. This helps you stay aware of enemy positions and potential threats.
  2. Use Pings Effectively:

    • Communicate with your team using pings to alert them of missing enemies or potential ganks. This fosters teamwork and keeps everyone informed.
  3. Ward Placement:

    • Invest in vision by placing wards in key areas (like river, jungle entrances, and objectives). This provides crucial information about enemy movements.
  4. Learn Lane Matchups:

    • Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of champions in your lane can help you predict enemy behavior and movements, enhancing your overall map awareness.
  5. Watch the Minimap During Team Fights:

    • During skirmishes, keep an eye on the mini-map to track enemy positions and potential flanking opportunities. This can help you make better decisions in fights.
  6. Practice with Custom Games:

    • Spend time in custom games focusing solely on map awareness. Try to predict enemy movements and practice warding without the pressure of a live game.
  7. Review Your Games:

    • After matches, review your gameplay to identify moments where you missed important information. This can help you recognize patterns and improve.

Takeaway: Improving map awareness is about developing good habits and consistently practicing them. By integrating these strategies into your gameplay, you'll enhance your ability to make informed decisions, leading to better performance in matches.
