How to Install Minecraft Mods

TL;DR

  • Use CurseForge or Twitch launcher for an easy installation process.
  • Ensure mods are compatible with your version of Minecraft and modloader (e.g., Forge).

Using Forge

To manually install mods using Forge, follow these steps:

  1. Download and install the Forge modloader for the specific version of Minecraft you want to mod [1:1].
  2. Navigate to the Minecraft directory by searching %appdata%\.minecraft\ on your computer [1:1].
  3. Download the desired mods, ensuring they are compatible with both the version of Minecraft and Forge [2:1].
  4. Place the downloaded .jar files into the mods folder within the Minecraft directory [5:1].

Using CurseForge or Twitch Launcher

For a more streamlined process, consider using the CurseForge or Twitch launcher:

  1. Download and install the Twitch app on your PC [3:1].
  2. Navigate to the mods section within Twitch and search for the mod packs or individual mods you wish to install [3:2].
  3. Select the mods you want, download them, and launch Minecraft through the Twitch launcher, which automatically manages the mod installation [3:5].

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If mods aren't loading correctly, check the following:

  • Ensure that the mods are not placed in subfolders within the mods folder and that the .jar files remain unextracted [2:2].
  • Verify that the mods are designed for the correct version of Minecraft and modloader (e.g., Forge) [4:1].
  • Some mods may require additional dependencies, so make sure all necessary files are downloaded [2:1].

Additional Tools

Other tools like Modrinth or Prism can also simplify mod management and installation [5:3][5:7]. These platforms provide user-friendly interfaces to help manage mods without delving into file directories manually.

ORIGINAL POST

Hi, I’ve been playing Minecraft for a long time. And if there’s one thing I never learned how to do, it’s installing mods. One of my cousins installed mods for me. But I don’t know how to set it all up. Can somebody tell me how?

curseforge/twitch is probably the easiest method, but by no means the only way to do it.

(This is for Microsoft computers) download forge for the version you want to mod, run it, in the files search %appdata%. \minecraft\, download mods for the version of minecraft that you want to mod, `once downloaded, click and drag the.jar files into the mod folder.

How to mod minecraft

Posted by P3arface · in r/Minecraft · 6 months ago

I've been struggling to mod minecraft for like 3 days and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I will try to give as much detail as possible but I'm not good with computers and don't understand most of the stuff going on. But anyway, I have everything I need downloaded I'm pretty sure, I downloaded forge, java, etc etc, but the first time I tried to download a biome mod i kept getting a "no class found" error and the research I tried to do made me even more confused. I deleted everything and started over and now while I can run the game none of the mods I put into my mods folders are showing up in the mods folder in the game. someone please help me T_T

Make sure the mods are for the modloader you are using, version number of minecraft you are playing and that you have also downloaded any dependencies the mods need to run.

Twitch launcher has a mods section, and it's great for finding mod packs and mods to play with, and being able to do it in a safe way where you can't run into repost sites. I use the launcher all the time, and if you ever want another mod that isn't on curseforge, it's very simple to put it in.

make sure the mod is for forge and for the correct version of the game. the .jar just goes in the mods folder.

note: curseforge does not equal forge

Put mods in the mods folder. It's that easy.

Easier if you use a mod manager like curseforge

First - make sure you are using the Java edition of Minecraft, not Bedrock.

Second - Use Twitch, it's the best way for beginners to get into modded - https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/How-to-Play-Minecraft-with-Twitch-App?language=en_US

(Assuming you are using PC version of Minecraft)

(How to locate .minecraft Folder)[https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/.minecraft]

Now to get mods, normally you can use a modloader, such as forge, or even fabric. It really depends on the mods you want, most mods use Forge. To install either, you find the installer from the modloader's official site, and usually following the steps will get the mod installed

After that, there usually is a mods folder, in the .minecraft folder where you drop all the mods in.

Then, go into minecraft, and select versions, and use the modloader as your version, it should then detect the mods, and run them.

This is kind of vague, as it does depend on what modloader, version of Minecraft, and System you are using, but this should work as a general guide

Consider using a third-party launcher like Prism for modded minecraft.

It streamlines the process by letting you install the correct version of Java, mod loader, modpacks, mods and dependencies from Curseforge and Modrinth directly in the launcher for the version of minecraft you select.

It will automatically keep instances isolated so you can't accidently open a world in the wrong version.

You will need a modloader like Forge or Fabric installed in order to use mods

Setup for Forge:

Prerequisite: Java 8 (for forge 1.12.2) or Java 16

  1. Assuming you have Java installed, go to https://files.minecraftforge.net/net/minecraftforge/forge/ to grab the forge installer. select which version you want and click on installer
  2. While on the adfocus page, DO NOT click on anything except the skip button on the top right. clicking on anything else will most likely give you a virus
  3. Once done waiting, click on the skip button, and it will download. click keep on chrome, or just save on firefox
  4. Double click the installer, or just open it. click install, wait a moment, and once it's done, just exit out of it
  5. now go to the mc launcher, and find the forge profile. if not, make a new profile and find the forge version within the list
  6. click play, and wait for it to load. then just exit out.

Adding Mods:

  1. press win + r, and type in %appdata%
  2. go to .minecraft --> mods. if it didnt make the mods folder, just create a new folder and name it mods
  3. Go to wherever you get your mods (Curseforge is your best option), and find which one you want. click download, and drag and drop the mod into the mods folder.
  4. startup forge again, and you are all set

Setup for Fabric:

  1. This assumes you already have java installed. Go to https://fabricmc.net/use/ and get the .jar version. or the .exe version. it doesnt matter
  2. double click on it, and select which version you want. then just click install
  3. wait a bit, and now fabric is in the profile. if you have created the mods folder, take all of the forge mods out or if you dont have any, just leave it as is. Make sure to add the Fabric API within the mods folder, since most fabric mods will need it
  4. go to the mc launcher, and start it up
  5. and that's it. for adding mods, it's the same steps as for forge

How to install minecraft mods

Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing Minecraft mods:

1. Install Minecraft Forge

  • Download Forge: Go to the Minecraft Forge website and download the version that matches your Minecraft version.
  • Run the Installer: Open the downloaded file and select "Install Client." This will add a Forge profile to your Minecraft launcher.

2. Launch Minecraft with Forge

  • Open the Minecraft Launcher.
  • Select the Forge profile from the dropdown menu and click "Play." This will create the necessary folders for mods.

3. Download Mods

  • Find mods from reputable sources like CurseForge or Planet Minecraft.
  • Ensure the mod version matches your Minecraft and Forge version.

4. Install Mods

  • Locate the Mods Folder:
    • On Windows: Press Windows + R, type %appdata%/.minecraft/mods, and hit Enter.
    • On macOS: Open Finder, press Command + Shift + G, type ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods, and hit Enter.
  • Add Mods: Drag and drop the downloaded mod files (usually .jar files) into the "mods" folder.

5. Launch Minecraft Again

  • Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the Forge profile, and click "Play." Your mods should now be loaded.

Important Considerations

  • Compatibility: Always check if the mod is compatible with your version of Minecraft and Forge.
  • Backup Your Worlds: Before installing mods, back up your worlds to avoid any potential corruption.
  • Mod Conflicts: Some mods may conflict with each other, so install one at a time to troubleshoot any issues.

Recommendation

If you're new to modding, consider starting with a modpack (like those available on CurseForge or Technic Launcher) that includes multiple mods pre-configured to work together. This can simplify the process and enhance your gameplay experience.
