How to Learn K-Pop Fanchants

TL;DR Utilize YouTube videos, official fan cafes, and practice with fellow fans to learn fanchants effectively.

Online Resources

One of the most accessible ways to learn k-pop fanchants is through YouTube. Many fan-made videos guide you through specific fanchants, often syncing them with live performances to help you understand how they fit into the song [1:1]. Additionally, some groups release official videos demonstrating the fanchants shortly after a song's release [3:2].

Official Channels and Fan Cafes

Many k-pop groups post their fanchants on official websites or fan cafes. For example, SHINee posts transcriptions of fanchants on their website, while BTS releases them on their fancafe immediately after a song drops [3:1][3:6]. These resources are invaluable for ensuring you're learning the correct chants directly from the source.

Community Practice

Practicing with other fans can be an effective way to learn fanchants. Fans often rehearse together outside music show venues before pre-recordings, especially during comeback weeks [3:3]. This communal learning experience not only helps you memorize the chants but also connects you with other fans who share your enthusiasm.

Concert Preparations

Before attending concerts, some fans use guides shared on social media platforms like Twitter or TikTok to familiarize themselves with the fanchants [4:1][4:2]. These guides often include video demonstrations that can be particularly helpful for first-time concert-goers.

Learning Hangul and Lyrics

Understanding Hangul can significantly enhance your ability to learn fanchants, as it allows you to read lyrics more accurately than relying solely on romanization [5:1][5:2]. Watching lyric videos and listening to songs repeatedly can also aid in memorizing both the fanchants and the song lyrics themselves [5:3].

By utilizing these resources and methods, you'll be well-equipped to join in the energetic and engaging tradition of k-pop fanchants.

ORIGINAL POST

Does anyone know where I can learn the fanchants for each song on the setlist of the deadline tour? I've been a fan of blackpink for years but not active in the fandom at all so I have no idea what the best resources are for this kind of stuff!

Thank you!!

I think there should be some YouTube videos for this :)

Fanmade ones of course. Just search for “Blackpink Pink Venom fanchant” for example and you should find some guides. I think the best ones are probably the ones where the pinks are performing and you can head the fanchant at the same time, but they should all work :)

Recently, a lot of groups have been releasing a video of them performing the fan-chants pretty soon after the song is dropped. It's pretty cute. Monsta X - https://youtu.be/U1kXVyZG1gk Stray Kids - https://youtu.be/JX6NlILRPmE Seventeen - https://youtu.be/g_VW9mozh6I ect ect

In addition to groups publishing the fanchants on official sites/fan cafes and groups recording themselves doing the fanchants and uploading to Youtube, the fans themselves usually practice the fanchants while waiting outside the music show venue before pre-recording especially during the comeback week. I have experienced this myself where the fan manager encouraged us to practice before pre-recording.

sometimes yes, sometimes no. sometimes fans themselves will come up with the fanchant if the company/group doesn't so they learn it collectively wherever they gather.

minthae · 7 years ago

In my experience with SHINee/SM the transcription of the fanchants (the song lyrics + the fanchants in a bright colour to differentiate them) is simply posted on their website and fans figure it out from there.

Most non-SM group probably post them on their fancafes. There may be different methods used by different groups/companies - I think I've heard of some newer groups posting videos teaching their fans.

In general, fanchants are designed to be easy to learn and to sound 'right' in the song. If you're in a crowd of fans who've learned the fanchants, it's pretty easy to follow along even if you practiced and/or are hearing them for the first time.

How Do You Learn Lyrics?

Posted by iguessimsigningup · in r/kpop · 5 years ago

I use Apple Music since I still get the student discount and they overhauled the lyrics feature with iOS 13.

I just discovered that you can tap any line in a song and playback will jump to that spot.

This is pretty cool for improving proficiency and getting an ear for (any) language.

What methods do you guys use to learn lyrics?

I second /u/prime5119, you gotta learn Hangul. it's so much different than the romanization.

I watch lyric videos (covering the romanization part) at the slowest speed and even then I usually have to go line-for-line.

Listening to the song often and watching YouTube lyric videos and then giving it my best shot. Honestly though, whether or not a song is in my native languages, I usually end up only memorizing the chorus and/or key lines and humming the rest. If I know a song by heart, it happened naturally.

How do I learn to sing K-pop songs?

Posted by Pink4everUwU · in r/kpophelp · 4 months ago

How do I learn to sing K-pop songs? I'm not trying to be fluent in the entire Korean language because, let's be real, Korean is one of the hardest languages. So I'm being realistic. I just want to learn a couple of my favorites K-pop songs.

I know there are romanized and easy lyrics videos for pronunciation, but I want to learn what words I'm saying. Online translation videos translate the whole sentence. They don't break down the words and grammar.

Are there any resources that can help me break down songs and help me with vocabulary?

No one says you have to “learn the whole language.” Just learn it to a very low level (A1 or A2). That’s all you need to read lyrics, understand how Korean sentences work, and look up words don’t know.

1 upvotes on reddit
nyibolc_ · 4 months ago

you could try learning hangeul (which won’t be very difficult), and once you’re able to match the different sounds to the words you’re looking to translate, proceed from there.

9 upvotes on reddit
SeraphOfTwilight · 4 months ago

You can't learn "the whole language," that's not how language learning works nor do you have to "get fluent" for any reason, certainly not just to understand song lyrics. That said, what you want to do is impossible without learning at least like beginner to intermediate grammar. Vocabulary you can always look up but the way Korean structures and phrases things is such that you can't just google words and understand, you have to do some level of learning.

11 upvotes on reddit
Logical_Brownie · 4 months ago

I will add that the reason that the lyrics get translated as a whole sentence is because Korean grammar order is different than English grammar order. So if translated word by word, the order will seem very strange to an English speaker. Also there are implied words, and little to no use of pronouns. So I love you in English is 3 words and two pronouns. In Korean it’s one word. 싸랑해 (sarang hey) just the verb because the pronouns are implied. In English you might say “I went to school today with my friend”. But in Korean the word order would be more like. Today to school with my friend (implied I) went.

So what others are telling you is correct. You can’t shortcut it the way you’re imagining. You just have to learn it. But it really isn’t as hard as you think. If you have interest then just try. Learn the letters (Hangul) first… this really does only take an hour or so.

8 upvotes on reddit
SeraphOfTwilight · 4 months ago

If I may nitpick, word order isn't the reason you don't see word-by-word translations with Korean, the issue is structural: Korean uses suffixes to stack meaning onto roots in a way English does not, with many of those having equivalents (in meaning) in English which require multiple words, and so we can't translate one to one. For speakers of a language like French or Greek it would probably be easier because those languages keep the root-suffix system of PIE, but English has mostly lost it due to historical funny business (same reason we have plurals like mouse/mice, goose/geese) so we struggle.

Also “I love you" (important to learners to note pronouns drop here only because it's contextually obvious who you're talking about) is 사랑해 not 싸랑해 and is technically two words; 사랑 is a (probably) Sino-Korean word for the concept of "love" and 해 = 하다 is "do" and acts as a particle to make nouns into verbs, which is important to note because this derivation process is still active — you can totally sort of just put together something like "binge 하다/binging 하다" in conversation.

6 upvotes on reddit
hyesunnie · 4 months ago

honestly, it sounds like you just want to learn korean. Learning a new language can be intimidating, but if you’re thinking about things like grammar then it’s essentially just wanting to learn the language. I may be biased, but korean really isn’t that difficult; you can learn the alphabet in like an hour. after that is just takes practice to sight read. it will be very difficult to be able to learn to translate even simple songs if you’re using romanization because of the way korean is conjugated and the syllable breakdown that cannot very accurately be reflected in romanization. a lot of words change their spelling depending on the tense or particle, which will be even more complicated to decipher in the roman alphabet. Korean is also phonetic and depends heavily on cadence and syllables so your pronunciation will likely not be very good or understandable if you’re using romanizations. if you watch k dramas or look at the translations to a lot of kpop songs, you should learn a bit of vocabulary and some sentence structure/grammar automatically. If you don’t want to formally learn korean, the best thing is to be curious and look up translations word by word if necessary and listen to a lot of spoken koreans That being said, the translations in videos or dramas usually aren’t direct translations, they just try and convey the same meaning across languages. i don’t think there’s an easy way or shortcut to learn, it does take work and there’s no one site or program that i know of that’ll translate things step by step accurately.

well honestly Korean is quite simple 😅 it's very logical, grammar and hangul are not hard. Just pay a little attention and use duolingo to make your practice easy. there are also a lot of bloggers who share some knowledge about Korean

7 upvotes on reddit
lancelota · 4 months ago

once your learn hangul (it's really easy peasy) and learn some basic words and grammar and how the sentence is stractured (duolingo will help), you can just translate the words one by one

fakehungerpains · 4 months ago

Honestly, learning songs or anything with ROMANIZED words is a big mistake and so difficult. Since there are so many ways to romanise the language and half the time it doesn't sound how it's written. For that, you want to actually learn hangul. It is quite easy to learn and suggest giving it a try if you want!

Are there any iconic fanchants other than TVXQ’s Mirotic?

Posted by Mindless_Candidate90 · in r/kpopthoughts · 1 year ago

When I first got into kpop, I thought the idea of fanchants was pretty cool and I kind of expected for them to be a little more impactful and creative.

Pretty much every song that gets performed on music shows gets a fanchant, but the only one anyone ever talks about is Mirotic, which is of course very catchy and easy to learn (link to them on Music Core in ‘08).

I’ve also heard BTOB members and fans talk proudly about how the fanchants for BTOB songs are difficult because the fans actually sing and sometimes divide up into different parts and do harmonies. It’s not surprising given that BTOB are basically all high tier vocalists. I would be thankful if any Melody could link me to some examples, I’m not sure what songs to search for.

Are there any more? I personally like the fanchant for Shinee’s Prism but I wouldn’t say it’s legendary. most fanchants are just fans yelling out parts of the lyrics or the name of the group, but sometimes the timing or the speed or other things can be kind of creative. Mostly I just ignore fanchants now since I’ve never been to a live performance :’).

For btob: Only one for me has melody split so half do the chorus rap and half do the vocals. Missing You has a fan chant that I can't listen to the song without hearing. Minhyuk' solo Tonight (with Melody) is writen to be performed with Melody singing. Pray (I'll be your man) is the first fan chant that they did a video for I think.

g.o.d's Lies. Literally any crowd who hears this song live knows to sing the second voice in every line of the chorus, and also to shout "G! O! D! JJANG!" at the top of their lungs when the beat drops just before the big high note of the bridge. This is g.o.d performing it in 2023, a whole 23 years after the song was released. This is a performance of it by random people in I Can Hear Your Voice in 2016. 1:12 for the iconic chant. This one is a performance for SBS Gayo Daejun 2009 by g.o.d's Kim Taewoo, K.Will, 2PM's Junsu, and SHINee's Jonghyun. 1:06 for the chant. And this one is SHINee singing the song acapella back in 2016 with full second voice and fanchants.

Would be hilarious to see the "alternate Thanos" where he doesn't become a washout and remains a popular rockstar who occasionally crosses paths with Huntrix lol. Yep. If I got this right, he got into legal trouble for his marijuana uses around the time when he was doing mandatory military service, which he pleaded guilty. After that, his reputation tanked because South Korea took drug addictions pretty seriously.

Even when he got cast as Thanos in Squid Game, quite a number of South Koreans criticized the casting choice and promotional materials in South Korea downplayed his involvements. It's also quite likely that his performance as Thanos also drew a lot from T.O.P's own marijuana use experience, which most likely contributed to reminding South Korean viewers of his real-life addiction.

A silver lining is that apparently his performance is quite well-received abroad, where his former past as a marijuana addict is not taken as seriously as in his own country. Hopefully this will also turn his opinion of him around in his home country as well. It seems he genuinely wanted to recover from his addiction and make a comeback.

Tip: Just found a new way to memorize vocabulary as a beginner 😌

Posted by pepitolover · in r/Korean · 5 months ago

(I thought this sub Reddit had flairs..anyways)

Actually there's 2 tips:

What you need:

For tip 1: • The amino app on your phone (The website is very bad, so just download the app)

For tip 2: • any reliable webpage for translations of kpop songs (If you listen to BTS, doolsetbangtan is toptier) &

• avocards

Tip #1:

I'm a beginner so I don't really learn much from shows or cartoons, even jadoo is too advanced for me lol. But I have amino app downloaded, you can find any community on there. There's a Korean Language community (join the one with a dark green profile picture with Korean language written on it in dull yellow, it may also have a larger amount of members than the other Korean learning communities. It has about 28,847 members).

I went to the "Quizzes" section & I just randomly started the first quiz I saw without knowing what's in there. The thing about the quizzes is that if you get just one answer wrong you fail & it stops. You have to start again.

What happens is that I then have to go through MULTIPLE rounds till I get ALL the vocabulary right. this makes me remember the vocabulary faster than just cramming it or even writing sentences. And there's no option like a list for knowing what's in there so you just go in blindly hoping for the best. The only information the app gives you is on the number of words in the quiz.

THIS & learning from kpop, very effective for a beginner.

Tip #2:

Kpop lyrics Now this is more time taking as one song may have around 50+ new vocabulary for you but it's worth it. Take your time, one song may take multiple days so just break it into sections (like 10 new words, or whatever is perfect for you).

The thing about learning from music is that even if I forget a vocab my mind goes back and remembers the context (IE the entire lyric) and brings me back the meaning.

For this I either:

  • use Avocards, an easier way since it has a kpop learning section. It will provide you a flashcard for every vocabulary as the MV is playing. You can pause, control the speed of the song. If you flip the flashcard, you may also find the word used in sentences

  • I also use doolsetbangtan because some songs on avocards require the pro version. I go to doolsetbangtan . copy, paste every lyric into Google and find the meaning there (usually on Hinative or other websites)

Learning from context is the absolute best way to make words and grammar points stick. I don't use songs for now, but these days I've been mining words from platforms like Ridibooks and Lezhin (for manhwa) and, although there are some that take longer to stick, I've been remembering most of them fairly easy.

I do the same with manhwa panels. As you said, it is very time consuming, but it works way better for me than graded readers, because it's what entertains me and motivates me the most. One page of a manhwa takes me between 3-6 hours (learning new vocab and, in particular, grammar points), but by the end I have a good grasp of everything I studied and weeks later I'm still able to remember and recognize them if I see them again in other panels.

I mostly use Anki cards with type-in answers. Writing the words makes them stick even better for me.

Honestly, if you are still early in this journey, all of them are going to take a very long time to translate and understand, but in my very personal case, that's the only way to keep me engaged and it helps me retain vocabulary and grammar so much more and faster too.

Genre-wise, slice of life or school life series will provide you with more day-to-day vocabulary that can be applied to different situations, whereas fantasy will have more niche terms that you will only find in other fantasy series.

I usually read BL, so I'm not sure if that's down your alley, but there are a lot of romance, fantasy, action, horror, and other genres there too.

What I'm doing right now is mining for the UI and tags, and it has helped me to learn a ton of vocab, some very niche and some that is actually helpful, especially the UI ones. Now, if I see a series that catches my eye, I can easily read the tags and have a general idea of the main characters and the overall tone of the story. You could start with that and then move to a specific series!

You have such perfect timing! I'm about to learn conjugation and vocabulary after learning the alphabet so this is really helpful, thank you!

How to learn kpop fanchants

Here are some key considerations for learning K-pop fanchants:

  1. Watch Live Performances: Start by watching live performances of your favorite K-pop groups. Pay attention to the fanchants during the songs, as they are often highlighted by the audience.

  2. Use Official Resources: Many K-pop groups release official fanchant guides on their social media or YouTube channels. These videos often include the lyrics and timing for when to chant.

  3. Follow Fan Accounts: Join fan communities on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok. Fans often share tutorials, videos, and tips on how to learn fanchants.

  4. Practice with Lyrics: Look up the lyrics of the songs and find the corresponding fanchants. Practice saying them along with the music to get the timing right.

  5. Attend Fan Events: If possible, attend concerts or fan meetings. Participating in person is a great way to learn the fanchants in a lively environment.

Recommendation: Start with one or two of your favorite songs and focus on those fanchants first. This will make it easier to remember and practice. As you become more comfortable, gradually add more songs to your repertoire. Engaging with fellow fans can also enhance your learning experience!
