Maintaining curls without the use of heat can be challenging, but there are several techniques and products that can help keep your curls looking fresh and defined. Here are some strategies based on various discussions:
Avoid Brushing Dry Hair
Brushing curly hair when it's dry can lead to frizz and loss of curl definition. Instead, detangle and style your hair while it's wet using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb [1:2]. This helps maintain the natural curl pattern and prevents breakage.
Use the Right Products
Products like gel, mousse, and sea salt spray can help hold curls in place. Applying these products to wet hair and scrunching can create a "gel cast" that holds curls as they dry. Once dry, you can scrunch out the crunch for softer curls [1:1]
[3:2]. For maintaining curls throughout the week, consider reapplying these products mixed with water to refresh your curls
[2:2].
Rewetting and Refreshing Curls
Rewetting your hair between wash days can help revive curls. Some people prefer using a spray bottle to mist their hair, while others find stepping into the shower and letting the steam dampen their hair works better [4:2]. Experiment with both methods to see which one suits your routine and hair type best.
Heatless Curl Techniques
For those transitioning from straightened hair or wanting to avoid heat damage, heatless curl methods can be effective. These include using rollers, braids, or twists to set curls overnight. Adding a bit of water or product before setting can help the curls hold better [5:2]
[5:4].
Routine and Consistency
Establishing a consistent hair care routine is crucial for maintaining curls. This might include washing with conditioner more frequently than shampoo, using leave-in conditioners, and adjusting based on humidity and other environmental factors [4:6]. It's important to tailor your routine to what works best for your hair's needs and texture.
By incorporating these tips and experimenting with different methods, you can maintain beautiful curls without relying on heat styling tools.
When i wash my hair, and let it air dry i get beautiful curls, but when i brush it they completely disappear. Is there some kind of hair product that could help retaining the curls?
I have curly hair too, but I don’t brush it when it’s dry. That pulls apart the curls and usually tangles my hair. For them to stay defined, I detangle (usually with my hands) and style my hair when it’s wet. I recommend you only brush it when it’s wet (unless you want the brushed out look sometimes). I hope this helps.
Check out r/curlyhair!
Don't brush curly hair!!!!! Just finger rake it if you want to loosen it a bit x

Find a gel or mousse with hold and when your hair is wet rake through the product, scrunch your curls and let dry like normal. When it’s drying it’ll get hard and crunchy. Just scrunch out the crunch and fluff at the root. It’ll hold your curls more, but don’t brush it because it will just frizz out and rip at your strands.
How do you guys maintain your curls throughout the week? Do you frequently rewet your hair on non wash days? Im really struggling to get good wash days and/or a routine that lasts more than a day or 2 and it’s super frustrating. Just looking for some general tips and advice
Putting some mouse or gel mixed with water on my hands before going to sleep with a prayer hands/ glaze method on my dry hair and then letting it air dry and putting in a bonnet has been a game changer for me. It kind of recreates the gel cast. I’d it’s still crunchy in the morning I use oil to scrunch out the crunch and maybe diffuse the dry hair.
Oooh I never thought of doing that before sleeping that’s a good ideab
I def read that somewhere in this sub during a frustration fueled deep dive for hair refresh strategies! Glad I can do my part in passing the wisdom on
I rewet every day between wash days pretty much. I have very fine hair and it doesn’t matter how much product I use, or which product I use, or if I get a strong gel cast on day one. I have to rewet after sleeping on them because they get smooshed regardless. I usually rewet in the shower as that’s more efficient for me than a spray bottle. I’ll water down my stylers a little before styling and I usually use less than on wash day.
I cannot go more than 4 days between washes. I literally add nothing to my hair in the mornings. I tussle it at the roots and go. If I add water or product it tends to get frizzy and feel gross though, and makes me feel like I have to wash it more often.
Shampoo and deep conditioner on Saturday
Regular conditioner on Tuesday and Thursday.
Then I have leave, mousse, and styling cream on all three days. I try to time my exercises and washes so I'm not sweaty, but if I need to my hair can handle one extra wash day on a random week
I spray my hair with water and diffuse on day 2. Day 3 I usually do a rewet.
So I’ve been straightening my hair for as long as I can remember. This past weekend I got a new hair cut and dyed my hair. I love how it turned out, but... I really like how it looks curled. My hair doesn’t hold curls well due to extensive straightening. I’ve tried to curl it and never holds. I’ve used hair spray and other products to make them stay, but no luck. Any tips, tricks, or ideas on how to keep the curls without causing my hair any damage?
My hairdresser recommended sea salt spray for holding curls.
I have bottles of sea salt spray! I’ll use it!
Make sure to use heat protectant when using heat tools (including a hair dryer!). Is your hair too soft or oily? Add dry shampoo and wash your hair less. Try different brands of hair spray, not all of them work for everyone (you might be using one for thin hair when you have thick hair). Try different heat tools, maybe a flat iron or a different curling iron. Grab smaller chunks of hair and let it heat longer. Cool after heating it by using the cold setting on your hair dryer. Try heatless curls, there's a ton of options out there. If your hair is damaged use olaplex no3 or leave in conditioner to help heal.
I’m definitely looking into doing heatless curls. I think that option would work best for me. Thanks for all the ideas!
I have a lot of thick hair and used to only be able to straighten because the weight would pull out all the curls, I tried curling irons & wands and tried curling with a straightener...this past fall I purchased Kiss Ceramic Instawave, it is AMAZING! It looks and seems super gimmicky and I thought there was no way it was going to work but it does it work but it holds all day with no products.
I'm not sure what kind of tool you use but i find a curling wand works best on my hair. My hair will not hold curl with any curling iron but the wands. If you haven't tried a wand I would suggest doing that. I don't use hairspray either. My first one was a $20 conair one from walmart.
Thanks! I’ll definitely look into getting one.
Is your hair naturally straight or wavy? I'd definitely recommend checking out r/curlyhair if you have some natural waves/curls, and their wiki has some good haircare advice in general.
Unfortunately, my hair is just straight now, but I’ll definitely check out the sub for my other haircare issues. Thank you!
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I genuinely have to ask.
I’m just starting my healthy hair journey to get my curls back after straightening them pretty much my whole life and was wondering how styling them works after wash day?
For example, I constantly see people saying that they wet their hair and then reapply the products they used on wash day (with the exception of shampoo and conditioner, I presume). Now, does this mean wetting it with a mist spray so that it is just damp, or does it mean wetting it completely in the shower?
I know that’s dumb, but I’m quite a literal thinker and don’t want to get this wrong…
You can do whatever works for you.. whether it be a spray bottle and misting it or jumping in the shower and completely getting it wet.
I personally like to jump in the shower let the steam make my hair damp and run my wet hands over it a couple times. I can normally do that for a day or two then I rewash or wash with conditioner only and redo my whole curl routine.
Thank you! When I would straighten my hair, it would be washed once a week (shampoo & conditioner) and then I’d just leave it until the next week, using a shower cap when showering so that it didn’t get wet.
Do you think it would now be best if I washed it with shampoo once a week, and then used conditioner every other day? The curling products I got includes a leave in conditioner, so would using that act as a substitute for completely soaking my hair if I just want to use mist?
I’m sorry for the questions, I really want healthy hair for 2025 but it’s so overwhelming 🥲
Yes, you can defiantly wash with conditioner every other day. Its honestly whatever works for you.
When I style my hair with getting it damp I personally don't use any products.
It’s whatever works for your curls really. For me, my curls look best when styled after being soaking wet. I don’t even towel dry my hair at all after a shower. I can get them just as soaked with a spray bottle so I have either option but with a spray bottle you can control how soaked you want them to be.
I'm with Poolgoddess, the first day out I simply wet my hands and hit areas that need it. The further out I go, the more I wet my hair and use additional products. Honestly, it depends on how my hair looks, how humid it is outside, how well my wash day turned out and whether or not my bonnet stayed on during the night so do what works for your hair and it may be trial and error. I don't believe there is a right or wrong - just what your hair needs that day.
Now, does this mean wetting it with a mist spray so that it is just damp, or does it mean wetting it completely in the shower?
Try both and do whatever works better for your hair and your habits. There is no "doing it wrong".
Depends on your products hair and time schedule. I don't use a leave in conditioner or a hair mask. However, I do use 2 mousses, one curling and one hard hold. I also do not use sulfates or silicones. Plus, I live in the desert, so my routine may differ from yours.
I wash with shampoo/conditioner twice a week. I use my curling mousse in the shower on dripping wet hair and combing through. Next is the disposable shower cap under my Turbie Twist to keep my hair from drying too quickly as I have fine hair. When I finally get to the hair portion, I brush style and scrunch with the Turbie before I use the hard hold mousse, then diffuse. That night, I put my hair up into a buff and slept on silk pillowcase.
Day 2 I let my hair down for about 15 minutes before assessing how much refreshing I need to do. Some days I need nothing and can go about my day. Some days, I take dripping wet hands and glide over my hairline and crown while "roping" the hair from ears down. I do not get my roots wet, but I do make my lengths wet. Then I airdry.
Day 3 is similar to Day 2, with the exception that I must wet my hair with dripping hands. At this point, I may add more hard hold mousse on the ends only for frizz control. During these days, my face framing hair will be pulled back with claw clips, French combs, or snap clips. Each day out from wash day, the front pieces get clipped further up? Out? By day 3, it's usually in a half up hairstyle or a full pony. Then I am back to wash day.
I’ve been doing heatless curls for a while now and I love the way they look but they never hold their shape. I know the curls will get looser as the day goes on but my hair just goes completely flat and limp. As if I never had any curls at all. How are you guys getting your heatless curls to hold all day?
Are you using product in your hair before you put your hair in the heatless curl mode??
I’ll spray my hair with a bit of water once it’s in the curler. Just barely damp so it dries by the time I take them out.
I usually will put mouse in my hair before (the first time, if I wrap them night 2 I wouldn’t add more) then spray with a little hair spray and let dry right before taking them out and that helps hold the shape a little better. My struggle is just keeping my hair wrapped so I started adding product trying to give it some texture/hold and it helped the next day too.
I rough dry with leave in conditioner and blow dry spray then oil before wrapping my hair. It’s like 80-90% dry when I wrap. Non wash days I’ll mist my hair and wrap. I use oil when I take them out to give extra smoothness.
I get my hair a little damp and use a good amount of serious hold gel or mousse. In the morning, spray with hairspray before finger combing. A wide tooth comb is okay too. I have found a lightweight spray oil that works great on my ends before combing as well.
Hairspray before curling!
Spray Lotta body onto damp hair, comb, wrap, and then if your hair is too dry before you get it all wrapped I spray it with water. My hair is thin and fine and high porosity so it dries quickly.
I never knew I had curly hair. I used to blow dry it 4 times a week for 20 freaking years. I thought my hair was just messy and frizzy.
My boyfriend (who is obsessed with curly hair) lost it when I told him « I think mine is ». It looked so bad at first but found so many advice on this subreddit so wanted to share the before and after.
Month 2 without using any heat.
This is my routine :
Once a week, I sleep with jojoba oil on.
Then I use :
Les Secrets de Loly (french, natural brand specialized in curly hair) shampoo
Les Secrets de Loly conditioner
Les Secrets de Loly curl Activator Mask (letting it sit for 10 minutes)
Les Secrets de Loly Curl Nectar & Les Secrets de Loly Kurl Boost (head down, prayers’ hands) Then I scrunch out the excess with a cotton t-shirt.
I seal in the moisture oil of the same brand called « Curl Glow ».
I always let it dry naturally because the diffuser would create way too much frizz.
For the past week, my curls even survive the night (they wouldn’t despite the satin bonnet).
I feel like my hair is finally remembering what it’s meant to look like. It’s so much softer than ever before now.
Thank you to everyone on this sub for helping me gain that confidence.

Adding a gel or mousse may give you some day 2, 3 longevity. Will help your curl clumps not break up into frizz.
When you sleep in a bonnet, do you pineapple? ?
I did but it wouldn’t work. So I stopped but it stays curl-ish. 😆 And On the second pic, I just spent the day outside so part of it was straightened a bit. But less and less so. I read it’s because after 20 years of constant straightening, you hair somehow forget it’s natural shape
Agreed. I flat ironed mine for 35 years. The ends are straighter than the 1.8 years of growth since I stopped touching my hair with heated tools.
I have a counter full of products I've tried. My current routine is:
The Kinky Curly Custard is a new addition. It doesn't give a great cast as a final gel, but it does seem to encourage coilier clumps than my hard gel alone.
What you're doing seems to work for your hair, which is lovely. If you want less frizz, finding a product that holds your curl clumps together is the only thing I can think of. What works for some doesn't work for all, there are just too many variables.
I lowkey feel like it looked curlier in the first pic but definitely less frizz in the second pic somehow. Either way welcome to the curly-headed community
Yeah, especially the front. Some part is still having the « straightened » memory. Especially given the fact that I hadn’t just washed it when i took the picture. but definitely healthier :) Thank you 🙏🏼
Looking for tips on achieving no-heat curls/waves. What are some of your favorite products or tricks?
OUAI wave hair spray is the BEST! link
Expensive but birchbox often does 20% off and I stock up.
I wet my brush and run. It through my hair so it’s a little damp. Apply and scrunch and scrunch every 10 min or so while it dries.
Does wonders!
Also when I wash my hair I wrap it in a aquais towel link
Then I just spray and do the same thing. Even easier. Looks natural every time!
I do two rope braids on damp hair and go to bed. Can’t be too wet or my thick hair won’t dry by the morning. I wake up and take the braids out to reveal the best waves!
I love 30s/40s style pin curl wet sets. Basic pin curling is easy to learn. Getting structured sets neat takes some practice, but to me it was so worth the effort. Instant glam.
Twist your hair while its damp and let it dry like that.
This or braiding does the trick for me
Small braids = small curls
Large braids = lose waves
Braiding leaves my hair looking like an 80s crimp and it frizzes horribly
I just watched a Jenn Im video where she tries her old favorites and she used a bumble and bumble surf spray for beachy waves. In the video her hair looked cute. I bought it but I have yet to try. Good luck!
Hey curlies! I am sharing a tiny progress post as someone who's just started their curly hair care journey. For years, I’ve done nothing — not even basic TLC. But I recently decided to start understanding my curls, and here’s what I’ve got so far:
📸 Pic 1 – My hair in its raw, unbothered, no-care state. Basically just vibes and frizz
📸 Pic 2 – Wash day! I used aloe vera gel, leave-in conditioner, and scrunched like my life depended on it and just air dry.
📸 Pic 3 – Next day, no combing, just some leave-in and scrunching to refresh.
Honestly, I’m surprised at how much of a difference just a little care made. There's still a long way to go (hello, frizz, definition, and moisture retention), but I finally feel like I'm on the right path. (Maybe?)
Open to all the tips, product recommendations, and encouragement — I’m listening 🧡✨
i think more like wavy hair not curly but its really going together! we're proud of u

We all know that using blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons can cause damage to our hair, but luckily, there are some cheap, easy, and effective alternatives that I learned today:
French Braid: This is a classic method that creates beautiful waves. All you need to do is apply a leave-in conditioner to your damp or dry hair and then tightly braid it. Leave it overnight, and voila! You'll wake up to gorgeous waves in the morning. Just spray some dry shampoo or hairspray to add volume to your roots, and you're good to go.
Curl Formers: These flexible tubes come in different sizes and shapes, depending on your desired curls. Just pull your damp hair through the tubes using a hook device to use them, and leave them until your hair is dry. You can either sleep with them or blow dry them. The result will be bouncy curls that last for days once the curl formers are removed.
Straws: This method requires patience and many straws, but it's worth it. All you need to do is wrap small sections of your wet hair around the straws and tie them off. Leave them until your hair is dry, and then untie them. The result will be tight ringlets that resemble pin curls. Use hairspray to hold them in place and enjoy your curly look.
Buns: This is my favorite method because it's easy and comfortable. Just put your damp hair in a ponytail, spray it with some water, and wrap it around the base of the ponytail. Secure it with bobby pins or another elastic band. For more curls, make several buns instead of one. Leave them overnight, and you'll wake up to relaxed curls or waves in the morning.
These are the methods you can use to curl your hair without heat .they save me time and money on styling products and tools. Do you have any other tips for curling your hair without heat?
Several people here have mentioned curling with socks. I've never looked into it, but there should be info on it online!
Rag curls, too.
What about using a hair dryer on the cool setting? Will that still damage hair?
Hey girlies, I’m tired of damaging my hair with the curling iron, so I’ve been looking at heatless curl posts and reels, but everyone seems to skip explaining a critical step or two of their process.
So I’m asking to all of you who have success doing heatless curls, what heatless curling method do you use? And do you do them overnight or during the day? How long do you leave the heatless curlers in? Do you do it with your hair damp or completely dry? If damp, how damp? What exact products do you use (specific product names please!! not just “curl cream” or “mousse”)? How much of the products do you use? Do you apply the products before or after curling the hair?
As a bonus, i’d love to hear about any things (anything at all) you’ve tried that has been a fail, and/or any tips I may not have thought of!
Thank you for your help on my journey to healthy hair💕
Hiiii when I do try and have heatless curls, I use a curling scrunchie. It’s even better if you have a satin cover for the bun!
Like one of the ones from Sleepy Tie?
Sleepy Tie won't really give you curls per se. It's more to maintain a blow out or give a blow out effect to your hair. I like mine, but it's different than overnight curls.
For overnight curls I like the octocurler best for sleeping comfortably. The sock curl method is also comfortable. For beachy waves I flip my head down and braid my hair from the top of my head.
It all depends on the type of hair you have and the type of curls you want. Some people’s hair holds curls better than others.
You’ve written a whole post with no information on what kind of hair you have other than long (bc of the sub this is)
You’re right I totally forgot to mention that, It’s 1C and doesn’t hold a curl well at all
I use the robe curl method on freshly washed, dried hair, and leave them overnight, sleeping in a satin bonnet.
For me, every time I try to add product or start damp it just falls flat.
You will have to experiment for your own hair.
Thank you! I will try this
how to maintain curls without heat
Key Considerations for Maintaining Curls Without Heat:
Moisturize Regularly: Use a good leave-in conditioner or curl cream to keep your curls hydrated. Dry hair can lead to frizz and loss of curl definition.
Use the Right Products: Look for products specifically designed for curly hair, such as curl enhancers, gels, or mousses that provide hold without weighing your curls down.
Plopping Technique: After washing your hair, use a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel to "plop" your curls. This helps absorb excess water while maintaining curl shape.
Pineapple Method: At night, gather your curls loosely at the top of your head (like a pineapple) to prevent them from getting flattened while you sleep.
Avoid Touching Your Hair: Minimize touching or brushing your curls once styled to prevent frizz and disruption of the curl pattern.
Refresh Curls: On non-wash days, use a spray bottle with water or a curl refresher spray to revive your curls. You can also scrunch in a bit of leave-in conditioner or curl cream.
Recommendation: Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction while you sleep, which can help maintain curl definition and reduce frizz. Additionally, try experimenting with different products to find what works best for your specific curl type, as different curls may respond better to different formulations.
