What Redditors are Saying

Overnight Hairstyles for Curly Hair

TL;DR

  • Use a satin or silk bonnet, scrunchie, or pillowcase to reduce frizz.
  • Try the "pineapple" method to preserve curls.
  • Consider using a continuous spray bottle with water and product for refreshing in the morning.

Satin and Silk Accessories

One of the most recommended methods for maintaining curls overnight is using satin or silk accessories. These materials help reduce friction, which can lead to frizz and breakage. Many users suggest wearing a satin bonnet or using a satin pillowcase [1:1][2:2]. Some also use a silk cap or shawl to cover their hair [5:1][5:4]. Satin scrunchies are another option to keep hair secure without causing damage [1:1].

The Pineapple Method

The "pineapple" method is a popular technique for preserving curls overnight. This involves loosely tying your hair on top of your head with a silk or satin scrunchie, which helps maintain curl definition and reduces tangling [5:2][3:6]. This method is often combined with using a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet to further minimize friction [2:3].

Morning Refresh Routine

Refreshing curls in the morning can be achieved with minimal effort by using a continuous spray bottle filled with water and a small amount of leave-in conditioner or curl activator [3:3][4:4]. After misting the hair, gently scrunching can help reactivate the curls. Some users prefer to re-wet their hair entirely and apply styling products again, although this can be more time-consuming [4:2].

Alternative Techniques

For those who find bonnets uncomfortable or ineffective, alternative techniques include using claw clips to secure sections of hair [3:1] or wrapping hair in a cotton bandana [3:4]. Another approach is to dry hair completely before bed, as going to sleep with wet hair can lead to frizz and loss of curl definition [5:1].

Product Recommendations

Investing in quality styling products such as curl creams, mousses, and gels can help maintain curl definition and hold [1:1]. It's important to choose products that suit your hair type and porosity, as this can affect how well they work for you. Conducting a porosity test can guide you in selecting the right products [1:1].

So this is my hair after using no products in the shower (yesterday I shampooed and conditioned) and the curls/ waves are pretty defined. All I use after I shower is some hair serum but in the mornings any sort of curl definition is completely gone! Do I need a better way to sleep with them? Or should I be using a better product to make them hold better? Or do I just need to re-wet my hair every morning? I’ve always struggled with understanding my hair type and its needs but I want to embrace my natural hair in the best way possible.

Satin lined bonnet that ties so it doesn’t slip and pillowcase in case it does, pineapple hair in a satin scrunchy. I normally don’t have to re-wet my hair till day 3-4 with that method.

Buy a satin bonnet and satin scrunchies, put your hair up like a pineapple, then put the bonnet on before bed. When you wake up, you’ll have to rewet your hair and style it. Invest in some styling products like a curl cream (defines), hair mousse (adds volume) and gel (holds everything in place). It would be good if you did the porosity test to see what your hair porosity is as then you’ll be able to find products best suited for your hair type. As someone with low porosity hair, usually a light weight curl cream and a mousse does the trick for me. Low porosity hair tends to struggle with buildup a lot, so I usually use a clarifying shampoo weekly before my usual shampoo; Curlsmith and As I Am do great hair products, but Curlsmith can get a little pricey.

What do y'all do with your hair overnight?

Posted by LearningToNerd · in r/curlyhair · 5 years ago

Okay, I HAVE to shower at night. It's just a thing. So I go to bed with wet hair. And I wake up with occasionally my hair posed in unique ways. Most commonly horns. I have same damaged fringy burns around my face, and they will be standing straight up and out after I sleep on them. It's gotten so much easier to take care of them since I started CG. I just wet it back down in the morning. But has anyone figured out a way to keep things tamed through the night?

I tried Bobby pinning that part down. It went horribly. It left little kinks where the pin was, and from there the hair would stick out 90 degrees. It was weird.

I fully dry my hair (usually diffuse) and sleep in a satin bonnet. I pull the bonnet off in the morning or do a steam refresh in the shower with it on, try and tame some frizz and flyaways, fluff and go.

I too shower at night. I usually just shower, apply all my products, scrunch out some excess water, and then plop it in a t-shirt overnight while I sleep.

I sleep in a gel crunch and it really helps take the frizz overnight. In the morning I just glaze some diluted leave in to refresh and shake it out a little. I haven't tried plopping overnight though

I can't find a way to preserve my curls overnight

I have tighter 3a curls/ loose 3b, and I don't like volume and like to prioritise definition becusse my hair is shorter but I'm growing it out.

I've tried wearing it in just a bonnet, pineapple, messy bun, pony tail and bonnet, t shirt, but it always stretches out my curls, gives me unnecessary volume or is just very frizzy

I'm so sick of doing my hair everyday because I get so sleep deprived and it costs a lot of money to keep buying product

This is why I eventually gave up the curly routine. I wear it curly when I feel like it for one day, but the idea of re doing my hair every single day is so exhausting.

I feel you! I gave up so many times, but with the spray bottle in the mornings I feel like it’s manageable. Better than having to straighten it

Following this because I still don’t know either. What’s your refresh routine like? I discovered the continuous mist water bottle and it has been a life saver! I fill it up with warm water (low porosity hair) and two pumps of Cantu wave acrivator, then spray and scrunch until hair is damp. Then I go in with small pumps of mousse, and then and oil when it all dries. I let it air dry because diffusing for me causes so much frizz.

My best I've found so far is using two claw clips. First you flip your head upside down, take the hair from the back and place two big claw clips like high pigtails on the top of your head (if your hair is longer you could use one big one). You can tie a silk scarf around the head to help keep friction down from the pillow.

3 upvotes on reddit
Deementor · 4 months ago

Tried this and I always lose the scarf in the middle of the night. But I might try the two claw clips, just tried one before.

You could try a cotton bandana. They tend to stay put a bit more and still help with frizz, even if it's not as good as silk.

Sometimes I use a third claw clip for taming the "pineapple" if my hair is a bit longer. I got a set of metal claw clips and find them more robust than the plastic ones.

Maintaining curls overnight

Posted by clementineski · in r/curlygirl · 3 months ago

Hi everyone! I have 2a-2b hair and I’m wondering how you guys are maintaining/refreshing your curls in the mornings? I usually style my curly hair, go to sleep (i’ve tried hair wraps and silk pillow cases, neither are comfortable for me to sleep on), I wake up looking a mess especially my scalp with the hair plastered in all different directions, and then i end up wearing my hair up for the next couple of days because it looks horrible down at that point. I find that wetting my hair in the mornings makes it more tangled especially with the product in it from the day before. Any tips? I’ve been thinking to just wash my hair daily but I’ve heard differing things on whether that is actually good for your hair.

I’ve just resorted to fully re-wetting my hair with shower head, re-applying product, and re-scrunching & drying. The spray bottle method to refresh just makes my hair crazy frizzy… If you find a way, let me know!!

The_Loudest_Bear2 · 3 months ago

I’m about there myself; do you fully rinse out the products when you re-wet your hair?

1 upvotes on reddit
ScythianCelt · 3 months ago

I don’t think they fully wash out, it’s like a 30 second soak. I also scrunch with microfiber towel after re-applying product. I actually find I like the results better after doing this versus after fully washed day too. I can pull this off successfully for 2 days in a row after wash day.

I personally don’t rinse out, but I pat with a microfiber towel to accelerate air drying.

I put my hair up in a pineapple and use a silk pillowcase. In the AM I use dry shampoo cause my hair sticks flat to my scalp, then I lightly skim wet hands over the top of my hair with emulsified and diluted hair product. I have to be careful with scrunching my hair since it likes to frizz during the refresh process. But I must always forget this fact, because I always scrunch. Then I’m shocked and surprised when my hair turns into a frizzy mess! Lol

Hi! You loosely pony tail your hair on the top of your head then put a silk cap over it. It’s called a pineapple! You can also get a silk pillowcase, as a bonus it’s good for your skin. You can find silk caps on Amazon, I use this one :)

Ooh… washing my hair even a few hours before sleeping is a huge no no for me. My curls never make it right to the morning; there’s not enough time to air dry. I wash my hair before noon on a weekend and let it air dry all day. It has to be bone dry for me to go to bed. I put a silk elastic sleep cap on at bedtime and it keeps my curls frizz free until morning! Sometimes I don’t even have to refresh. I love my silk sleep cap!

Satin bonnet sold in the haircare aisle. Available in lots of prices, but I think you can get them for $4-5. (I spent $12 on the Cantu one because I liked the shade of green.)

You'll get the hang of tucking all your hair in, with or without the aid of a scrunchie, depending on the length.

I tried everything, satin pillowcase, satin bonnett, pinappling my hair overnight, everything ive been told, but if i dont wash my hair every 2 days it ends up looking like a total mess. The curls lose all their definition (even when they already have so little) and it frames my face weirdly, making me feel really ugly. People tell me i shouldnt wash/rinse my hair so often, but if i dont i look like a nightmare! Please give me advice, anything 😭😭

Nothing is working to hold your curls because you’re not using any hold product in your hair. You need gel or mousse on top of the leave in conditioner. Also make sure you’re using a microfiber towel or T-shirt instead of a regular towel on your hair.

6 upvotes on reddit
morongaaa · 4 months ago

I like the brands curlsmith or ouidad. If you want more drugstore brand kind of product, the Aussie Freeze gel or mousse have great hold

ETA: Apply your leave in right out of the shower, not on dry hair. Detangle and the scrunch in mousse or gel while hair is wet. I like to apply mousse first while soaking wet, then I scrunch out extra water with a t-shirt and apply gel on top, then diffuse. If you don't want to use heat you can air dry or look into plopping.

Ive been told to brush my hair when wet, and thats really the only way im able to brush it. My hair stylist recommended me bali curls conditioner and shampoo, and then a hair mask from garnier, i usually dont blow dry, but only towel dry my hair, after drying it i put a leave in on. I do the exact routine ive been taught to, but it really doesnt do it for me i think, please help me just anything, but mostly for sleep routine!!

You need a new hairstylist, honestly. You shouldn't really brush your curly hair at all, let alone when wet. Brushes tug and break wet hair and break the pattern of curly hair. Throw away your brush and your stylist.

What stylist recommends Garnier?

2 upvotes on reddit
neatoskeato · 4 months ago

Agree- never brush or comb your curly hair! Use a detangling conditioner in the shower, and detangle with your fingers or a wet brush while applying the conditioner…but once the water shuts off you shouldn’t comb or brush curly hair even while wet.

la_jirafa88 · 4 months ago

Honey baby, first of all that color is doing you no favors and second, you MUST have products for curly hair. Oil, leave in conditioner, mousse or a gel to hold the curl. I comb my hair with a wide tooth comb with conditioner in my hair and then rinse and then don’t comb it until you are washing your hair again. Gently scrunch in products from root to tip and air dry/diffuse. I’m not badmouthing your stylist but I don’t think they can help with your curls and if they put that color on your hair, you might need to move on to someone else.

Do you comb after you rinse the condioner? Like brush the product through your hair when you get out of shower or do you just scrunch it in and not brush at all after rinsing?

1 upvotes on reddit
la_jirafa88 · 4 months ago

I apply conditioner, comb through, rinse, scrunch/plop, apply product, and than air dry/diffuse. No brushing after rinsing. I know some do well with a denman brush but this is what works for me.

This is what works for me - I oil my hair from roots to tips and then use a spray bottle to spray my hair and scrunch some more leave in and let it dry. I can usually wear it for a few days like this.

If all you're adding to your hair out of the shower is a leave in conditioner, there's no product with hold, you need some kind of gel or mousse with hold to keep your definition through the day and especially overnight

I really like shea moisture products for another affordable option. Their curl mousse and curl smoothie work great for styling without making my hair feel too heavy or crunchy.

How to prevent tangles and flattened curls overnight

Posted by Ok-Wishbone-26 · in r/CurlyHairCare · 2 months ago

My curls are very prone to getting frizzy, tangled, and stretched out. I’ve tried a high ponytail overnight but that stretches the curls out and the ends still get tangled. I’ve tried a bonnet and still ended up with a tangled mess and frizz the next morning, in addition to the fact that it either irritates my head or falls off. I usually just sleep on a satin pillowcase but don’t get better results from that either. How am I supposed to preserve my curls while I sleep? When I try refreshing them with water and product in the morning it ends up looking greasy AND frizzy. I’m at a loss and so frustrated.

I use Ouidad products, specifically the leave in conditioner and climate control gel. I’ve tried countless other brands and products but Ouidad has always worked the best for me. I diffuse my hair about 1/2-3/4 of the way because if I air dry my curls are flat and plastered to my head.

My curls are the same and the only thing that half works is pineapple and sleeping on a silk pilllowcase. I still had to get great at my refresh game. Here is my morning routine in case it helps you.

I spray my hair with a continuous water bottle that has several pumps of Bumble and Bumble curl reactivator inside, as well as a small pump of Ouidad advance climate control gel, and water. I usually just rake my fingers through a bit and scrunch, but sometimes I have to use my bounce curl brush if my curls are really out of shape. Then I scrunch in Ouidad Whipped Curls conditioning mousse in the gray bottle. If I feel like my curls need it, I use a bit of Ouidad advance climate control gel after as well. Then when it’s all dry, I scrunch out the crunch with Verb ghost oil on my hands.

It makes a beautiful wave in the morning.

Im trying to wear my curly hair more often and I'm just looking online for some tips into nighttime care which is what I'm struggling with most. This was my last night's routine. Last night I've put some leave in conditioner in my hair (not long before I went into bed), gently tied it up on top of my hair, wrapped a silk bandana on top and then put a bonnet on. It came out looking like this.

There isn't really nighttime care. The styling you do after washing and how you refresh is what matters the most. If you're wearing a bonnet or a scarf at bedtime, that's about all there is to do. I don't recommend applying leave in just to apply it, though. There are plenty of routines pinned and tons of posts with info.

I am new here and I’ve been following all the methods which work great!! The next day though, my hair is back to being a frizzy mess. I use a satin pillowcase but I don’t know what other things I can do to keep my hair as curly as it is right after washing and drying it.

Have you tried a satin bonnet? Pineapple your hair with a satin scarf, then put a bonnet over it.

Usually when my hair is long I do the pineapple ponytail. Now my hair is too short right above my boob. So I have the same problem as you. I wash it the day of then I just straighten it the next day. I only was my hair 2x a week.

My hair is shoulder length so I half-pineapple. Works for me.

When my hair was long, my best option was to put it up. A pineapple of sorts like others say.

Now my hair is too short to put up, but it’s sufficiently layered and textured. With the layers I don’t have to do anything to it before bed. My following days routines are what matter

Usually day 2 I just puff it back out some. Day 3 I spray it with a water bottle and apply a little more gel. Usually only enough for it to take about 20 mins to air dry on its own. Day 4 I puff it back out again. Sometimes it makes it to a day 5 where I do the water bottle again, sometimes it I just to start the routine over.

overnight hairstyles for curly hair

Key Considerations for Overnight Hairstyles for Curly Hair

  1. Protective Styles: Choose styles that protect your curls from friction and breakage while you sleep. This can include braids, twists, or buns.

  2. Moisture Retention: Use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil before styling to keep your curls hydrated overnight.

  3. Loose Styles: Opt for loose hairstyles to prevent tension on your hair. Tight styles can lead to breakage and discomfort.

  4. Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase: This helps reduce friction and keeps your curls from getting frizzy or tangled.

  5. Hair Accessories: Consider using soft scrunchies or hair ties that won’t snag or damage your curls.

Popular Overnight Hairstyles:

  • Pineapple: Gather your curls at the top of your head in a loose, high ponytail. This helps preserve the curl pattern and prevents flattening.

  • Braids or Twists: Create two or more loose braids or twists. This can enhance your curl definition and reduce frizz.

  • Bantu Knots: Section your hair and twist it into small buns. This can create beautiful curls in the morning.

  • Loose Bun: Gather your hair into a loose bun at the nape of your neck or on top of your head. Use a soft scrunchie to avoid tension.

Recommendation: The pineapple method is particularly effective for maintaining volume and curl definition, especially for longer hair. If you have shorter curls, braiding or twisting may work better to keep your curls intact and defined.
