How to Make Money in Stardew Valley

TL;DR

  • Focus on high-value crops like Ancient Fruit and Starfruit for wine production.
  • Utilize fishing, foraging, and processing goods for early game income.

High-Value Crops and Wine Production

One of the most profitable strategies in Stardew Valley is growing high-value crops such as Ancient Fruit and Starfruit. These crops can be turned into wine using kegs, which significantly increases their value [1:4], [3:1]. Players suggest filling greenhouses with Ancient Fruit for consistent harvests [1:2]. Starfruit wine is also highlighted as a lucrative option, especially when aiming for quick profits [4:1].

Animal Products and Processing

Another effective method is utilizing animals for products like truffles and milk. Pigs are particularly valuable for finding truffles, which can be sold directly or processed into truffle oil for higher profits [1:5], [3:8]. Mayo and cheese machines can process eggs and milk, increasing their sell price compared to raw items [5:1].

Fishing and Foraging

Fishing is a reliable source of income, especially in the early game. Upgrading your fishing rod and using bait can help catch fish more efficiently [5:3]. Foraging seasonal items like berries and shells also provides a steady influx of gold [2:2], [5:1].

Crop Selection by Season

Choosing the right crops for each season can maximize profits. In spring, cauliflower is recommended due to its high profit margin [5:2]. Melons in summer and pumpkins in fall are similarly profitable choices [5:2]. During winter, focus on mining and fishing as there are no crops to grow [5:2].

Passive Income Strategies

For those seeking less time-consuming methods, setting up bee houses for honey production, particularly Fairy Rose Honey, is suggested as it requires minimal effort compared to other farming activities [4:4]. Additionally, investing in crystalariums for diamond production can provide a passive income stream [3:9].

By implementing these strategies, players can effectively increase their earnings in Stardew Valley and enjoy a prosperous farm life.

I made jellies, juice, pickled vegetables, wine (regular, not iridium), and roe.
Sold iridium and gold crops.
Sold iridium and gold fish (not smoked).

Looking for things to do that are not that time consuming - thank you!!!

(Saved everything from year 3 and sold today)

All the things you listed are how to make profit.

If you're looking for more passive profit, fill the greenhouse with ancient fruit.

Yes but I’m wondering if more experience players have a specific thing they do to make serious gold

pwettyhuman · 2 months ago

My money pipeline: 384 kegs in 3 sheds to make wine weekly from same number of ancient fruits growing on Island Farm. 16 iridium sprinklers. The slow parts were making the kegs and the ancient fruit seeds, but once those are up and running, nearly 1 million g weekly. With this setup I make in 1 season the same as you posted here.

1 upvotes on reddit
TheJackalsDay · 2 months ago

Yes, of course. But it's basically the same thing, just at scale. And it takes a lot of planning and waiting.

The biggest thing is using your greenhouse and Ginger Island to constantly grow Ancient Fruit. Especially once you unlock the deluxe fertilizer that allows you to grow iridium crops. Then a ton of wine processing. Also: fishing ponds full of Legend(II) fish to collect roe. Once you get enough of those going, that's just a passive 10K+ everyday before you process them. Truffles are the same way. Get barns just for pigs. You can also fill coops with ducks and void chickens.

2 upvotes on reddit
Local-Turn-5761 · 2 months ago

I sell my strawberries from the greenhouse as well as a lot of its wine and jam. I've only recently started smoking fish but only sell the ones that are below iridium quality - the iridium ones are being saved for my golden clock funds. I also make mayo, cow cheese specifically for selling (goat cheese again, for the funds) and just whatever the heck i grow during the season.

...as you can tell, im not helping your request here via naming time-consuming stuff 😅

Frazier008 · 2 months ago

Pigs, pigs, and more pigs. Make sure you have the perk that makes all forage iridium quality to make the most.

MidOver28 · OP · 2 months ago

So truffles are considered foraged items? And just sell them as is without turning them into oil?

1 upvotes on reddit
Frazier008 · 2 months ago

Yes! It won’t make you as much as wine but it’s very little effort. I have two barns full of pigs and will make about 50-70k a day on them. Make sure they are pet if you don’t have autopetters and make sure they have enough clear space to keep finding truffles. So If im on the farm or around somewhere I’ll go pick them all up around 10 or 11 then again at night.

My main save on switch has been my most profitable to date. I got 3 sheds for wine, 3 barns with pigs and about 10-11 ponds for Legend II roe 👌 I save most things for the last of the season and the satisfaction of breaking the profit counter every month doesn’t get old 😅😅

Fishing, collecting sea shells, picking up the seasonal forage items are all easy ways to make money starting out! The game does have a really slow start but once you level up some things the money will be rolling in!

Fish a bunch but don't sell the fish. Wait until you get to Level: 5 and pick the Angler profession, then sell them. You can easily have 10,000g by Spring 13 then buy one hundred strawberry seeds. You'll get two harvests from them which is an easy roughly 30,000 just from strawberries.

Farming, and process what you farm in preserve jars and kegs (check wiki for what is most efficient for this). Eventually you'll add casks to that mix. Pick Artisan for your level 10 farming skill. Nothing in the game can compare to the profit you can make with this approach because sprinklers, and later the "auto-harvesting feature" (don't want to spoil too much..), allow this to scale far beyond what other approaches can. So you make more money and most days use hardly any of your time to do it.

Fishing has a terrible profit-per-time-spent scale. Mining and selling ores and gems can make decent money, but it takes your whole day or you make nothing, and you can't really scale it up. So it's pretty solid early but not going to get you a golden clock without a very long grind.

For animals, pig truffles, golden cheese from regular cows, and eventually ostriches, are all pretty good money compared to the effort involved. Takes too much space to scale up, and definitely not worth the effort until you can afford auto-harvesters. But I like to supplement my farming with these.

Fishing can be a pretty solid income source in spring/summer of year 1.

But yes, late game, nothing scales like wine.

1 upvotes on reddit
redscull · 3 years ago

Fishing has its uses, but for profit, it is not a great way to spend time or energy. And it's especially terrible in multiplayer because time doesn't pause. But first spring summer, it is an ok way to finish your time and energy for the day after your farming is done, and assuming you aren't comfortable yet with heading to the mines.

Well uhhh, mostly bombs inside skull caverns for iridium, also the mining level (5? Possibly 10) for +1 ore per vein really helps in the long term. Lucky days, plus lucky food, plus lucky ring, burglars ring for monster rerolls for iridium bars from bats, monster musk, crusader on infinity sword to take care of mummies and slime charmers ring so slimes dont do damage.

Edit: forgot about rabbits foot from the journal scrap.

Since no one else has said it, I'll mention fairy rose honey on Ginger Island.

Look, hold on a second, I've got a point to make.

Because, no, it's not the most money/space (especially the way I'm doing it), but it is good money. And- this is they key point- if you set it up as long rows, it absolutely curb-stomps everything else- ancient fruit wine included- in money per continual effort. Wine, you have to harvest the fruit (already more time-consuming than the honey), stick it in the keg, and then pick it up from the keg. Click click click, ancient wine.

The honey is one click, and you can do it at a full run.

Plus, it's just fun to run down the rows grabbing honey. It also leaves loads of time for making money in other ways.

I did that. It's amazing.

I did the maths and both ancient fruit and Starfruit wine beat it for pure profit, but not by much. The upside of visiting once every 4 days and just collecting a finished product is considerable.

I also left a single beehive on the standard farm, sync'd with the others as a timer to tell me when I needed to go.

I prefer beer. They only sell for 200 but if you have a lot of kegs you can make a decent amount because they produce once a day. I use the seed maker and grow wheat in the greenhouse non-stop.

johnpeters42 · 3 years ago

Hops produces daily and makes pale ale (300) daily. More labor-intensive, though, so I just grow some outdoors in season.

Mid/late game, you can afford to buy coal and ramp up preserves jars in a hurry (whereas kegs are limited by number of tapped oak trees). They can pay for themselves within a few weeks if you’re also growing enough high-price crops to keep them busy (as opposed to stuff like berries with high volume but low individual sell price).

Nope, you lose out on the dollars per day efficiency. It takes 56 days to double the value, but you make 1 bottle per week every week with the ancient fruit and keg.

Sure, casks are fun for the big one time payout, but if your interested in dollars per day invested, go straight from keg to bin.

For the main farm, ancient fruits make significantly more. One ancient seed can generate 10 ancient fruits with deluxe speed gro + agriculturist, which is 23,100g in a year. You can get 3 starfruits in summer and make 9,450g. The problem is that the best spring or fall crops make around 3,000g, making around 16,000g in a year, about 7,000g short of ancient fruits.

For the greenhouse/Ginger island, you can get 11-13 starfruits depending on deluxe speed gro and agriculturist, and it can make a bit more (40,950g for 13 harvests) than 16 ancient fruits (36,960g for 16 harvests). I do prefer ancient fruits more, because greenhouse/ginger island can generate ancient seeds for the main farm, and it's more convenient. And, I can grow enough starfruits for kegs with garden pots.

What I use (and remember that this is not the most efficient use of space) is as follows.

First, I organize everything so it's all the same thing as you go up and down. So I suppose it would be columns, rather than rows. First is a column of fairy rose flowers- I watered them manually, and you don't need to water them once they're grown, so no sprinklers, though it wouldn't be hard to place some while the flowers grow and place the bee houses after.

Then it's symmetrical, out from the column of flowers- a column of bee houses, an empty column to run down (featuring whatever flooring you like to help with sprouting rather than spreading weeds), then two columns of bee houses, with another empty/flooring column to the outside of that.

Each flower affects bee houses five tiles away. You can make my design a more efficient use of space by doubling up the columns of bee houses next to the flowers and using the row of flowers as a path to gather honey. I don't like to, because I'm clumsy and don't want to pick the flowers accidentally, and also because I like collecting at a full run, but everyone has their own playstyle.

Also, you can make significantly better use of the space than that, but I'm not aware of any options that both use the space more effectively and maintain the "run through like a honey-hungry madman" angle.

Starfruit or ancient fruit wines, both has it's own pros and cons.

But I achieved perfection in 2 years on my last run with the help of mainly starfruit, without going too crazy with the crops and production, so at least I can say it's proven if you want big money fast.

Okay here is how to get the most money from farming.

In spring: get as much cauliflower from the shop as you can,$80 to buy sells for $175 profit is $95 on average. (Use what I said in the spring one to everything else)

Summer: melons buy $80 sell $250 profit $170

Fall: pumpkin buy $100 sell $320 profit $220

Winter there’s nothing, work on mining and fishing. I really hope this helped

I make early money by foraging and fishing.

After I've stored a couple hundred sap, I'll sell all excess sap from cutting trees, as well as all the acorns etc (only early game, later I'll keep everything for crafting). It's not big money, but it helps early game.

Once you build a coop or barn, build mayo or cheese machines to process those items. Makes a big difference compared to selling raw items (although be aware for the shipping perfection, you need to sell a small milk and a small egg of each colour).

Look our for salmonberry and blueberry season, you can get a lot of berries on those days and make some quick money boosts.

I never sell wood, but I personally end up with a lot more stone than I need in early game. Once I hit a stack of 999 stone, I sell the excess (only early game, later I use a lot of stone for paths). If you aren't collecting stone quickly, then don't do this.

Fairy rose honey is a big money-maker in Autumn.

Keep an eye on the board at Pierre's. A lot of the time there are easy requests that will bring in cash. There isn't a penalty for not doing the quest, so I'll generally accept all the quests and see if I can get to it.

Fishing.

A fish might sell for 50g or something but you can do it while waiting for crops to grow and it practically does not limited to time. Time of the day only decide the fish you got.

Best way to make money would be Truffle Oil + Wine but it is for late game. No need to worry about it now.

For the best sources of money in the game, there is a triangle of sorts: duration, complexity, and profit. The top 3 crops are Hops (turned into Pale Ale), Starfruit and Ancient Fruit (both turned into wine).

Hops make the most money, and are fairly easy to get going, but are very time-consuming and require a lot of machines to get the most from them. Starfruit are the most complex, but make a good profit for a moderate amount of time investment. Ancient Fruit make the least amount, but they are very low maintenance (both in time and care) once the engine is fully set up.

8 upvotes on reddit
J
johnpeters42 · 1 year ago

More on hops:

  • Hops grow on a trellis, limiting movement. (Junimos aren't limited,, but they also don't work on rainy days.)
  • Hops regrow daily, so harvest daily for max benefit.
  • Kegs take some time to get the crafting recipe and the resources (but then you can also use them for wine).
  • Hops in kegs finish processing daily, so cycle them in/out daily for max benefit.

I usually plant a dozen or two in year 1 and save them until I have some kegs, even if just a few. In later years, I might increase that a bit, but not a whole lot.

Each keg processing hops produces 300 g/day, provided you have all the pieces and keep up with the daily rotations. Ancient fruit wine (ideally in the greenhouse or on the island) produces 1650 g/week (so about 235 g/week), but you only need to do the rotations once a week. (Artisan profession adds 40% to both.) Starfruit is roughly on par with ancient fruit, and a good choice until you finish expanding your ancient fruit.

6 upvotes on reddit
KaitoPrower · 1 year ago

I wish Ale was ready daily like Hops, but unfortunately, Pale Ale takes 2 days to mature, so you need twice as many kegs as you do hops plants to keep up with production.

If you want a cheaters way to make heaps of money, make your name [857][857][857]. Every time someone says your name you get 3 tiger slime eggs. They sell for 8000g each.

If you want to really take advantage of this, at the desert festival go and talk to a few characters. Find one that says your name (most likely lewis, sam or robin) and keep spamming the dialogue, because they will continuously repeat your name.

You'll have millions in no time.

Otherwise, take the honest road and make ancient fruit wine

I’ve been having a blast with mystic trees and mushroom logs in my latest 1.6 file. Fun, low maintenance, and it led to a surprisingly effective first year for me! Pickled purple mushrooms sell for a tonnnn

I imagine it could get nutty later on if you cover your whole farm in mystic trees(with heavy tappers!) and have your mushroom logs constantly pumping out purple mushrooms, but that has a pretty high cost of needing to craft mystic seeds.

I wish the deluxe fertilizer from qi was available sooner. Money is basically pointless by the time you get it

Collect as much foraging as you can. Become freinds with caroline. Craft tea saplings. Sell them all. At 500gold a peice you can make quite a bit. Hell turn some foraging into plants for even MORE tea saplings

What are tea saplings and how do I get them?

You have to befriend caroline to two hearts. And meet her in the room in the kitchen.

Pickles, jelly, wine, pigs, mayo, aged cheese. I'm waiting for my first stash of iridium wine to come out now, that's gonna be killer.

Depends on how far along in the game you are

Early game I have a fairly small amount of crops, more about getting bundles done than money. I try and repair the beach "bridge" asap for extra forage cash and spend most of the time fishing. I'm saving up for strawberry seeds.

Progressing I switch to focus on farming as soon as I get quality sprinklers (iridium eventually, of course). Basically spending all my cash on seeds, saving for backpack.

With the bigger backpack I hit the mines while my crops are (mostly) automated.

"End game" being keg/jam sheds with ancient fruit from the greenhouse.

I know a lot of people max pigs for the truffle fortune, I just don't like dealing with em.

Fishing is a big money maker for me; I’ve just reached winter of Year 1 and I have a whopping 213,880g total earnings and I’m sitting on 75,224g in my wallet. All of that is from fishing and multi harvest crops.

Early game, fishing is the moneymaker. Midgame, artisan goods are the moneymaker. Late game, ancient fruit wine is the moneymaker.

Fishing early is the way. Spend strategically. Process all of your animal product and crops (jars, kegs, mayo, and cheese). But, fishing year one is the best income for us regular gamers.

forage hardcore on day 1 for mixed seeds and sell whatever forage you dont need to pierre and get as many potato seeds as you can. day 2-5 fish until 2am each day and store all the fish in a chest at the dock, once you get the fishing perk for higher sell prices get a fiberglass rod and fish even more keeping chubs and selling everything else and use all the extra money from fishing for strawberry seeds and process all your strawberries back into seeds for day 1 of next spring. go to the mines on day 5 and try to get down by 10 levels each day ending at level 80 and hoard iron gold and quartz for when your farming level is high enough to make sprinklers then as soon as you can make them lay out like 20-30 sprinklers and expand those as far as you can and get started on making tappers after that to put on all your oak trees for mass producing kegs later. Get a shed and upgrade it and stuff every available space with kegs which fits about 173 per big shed and just keep building more keg sheds until you make wine as fast as you grow the crops to make into the wine and when you get a shit ton of cash just buy the ore and coal for more sprinklers, kegs and tappers and later on crab pots to line every body of water with them then process all the garbage through a recycling machine shed

My farm layout for 4 corners was both right corners as sprinklers, top left was a big row of sheds and bottom left was an oak orchard

how to make money in stardew valley

Key Strategies to Make Money in Stardew Valley

  1. Crop Farming:

    • Seasonal Crops: Focus on high-value crops for each season. For example:
      • Spring: Strawberries (after the Egg Festival) and Cauliflower.
      • Summer: Blueberries and Starfruit.
      • Fall: Cranberries and Pumpkins.
    • Quality Fertilizer: Use fertilizer to increase crop quality, which boosts selling prices.
  2. Animal Farming:

    • Invest in animals like cows, goats, and chickens. Products like cheese, mayonnaise, and eggs can be very profitable.
    • Upgrade your barn and coop to house more animals and produce higher-quality goods.
  3. Foraging:

    • Collect wild forage items like berries, mushrooms, and flowers. These can be sold directly or used in crafting and cooking for higher profits.
  4. Fishing:

    • Fishing can be a lucrative source of income, especially with high-value fish like the Legendary Fish or during specific seasons.
    • Crafting fish into dishes can also increase their value.
  5. Mining:

    • Gather ores and gems from the mines. Sell gems directly or use them to craft items that can be sold for a profit.
    • Look for rare items like Iridium Ore to maximize profits.
  6. Crafting and Artisan Goods:

    • Create artisan goods such as wine, beer, cheese, and preserves. These often sell for much more than their raw materials.
    • Invest in kegs and preserves jars to maximize your crafting potential.
  7. Quests and Events:

    • Participate in town events and complete quests for villagers to earn extra cash and rewards.
  8. Greenhouse:

    • Unlock the greenhouse as soon as possible to grow crops year-round, maximizing your income potential.

Recommendation: Focus on a combination of crop farming and artisan goods for the best profit margins. Prioritize high-value crops and invest in crafting equipment to turn raw materials into more profitable products. This balanced approach will help you maximize your income throughout the game.
