Stardew Valley Fishing Guide

Understanding the Mechanics

Fishing in Stardew Valley can be challenging at first, but understanding the mechanics is crucial. The key is to keep the fishing bar green by holding and releasing the button to stay on target with the fish [2:2]. Many players find that taking a few in-game days to practice fishing can help them get accustomed to the mechanics [2:4]. Watching video tutorials can also provide a clearer understanding of how to manage the mini-game [2:3].

Choosing the Right Location and Time

Different fish are available at specific locations, times, and under certain weather conditions. For example, some fish are only available during particular seasons or require specific weather, such as rain [4:1]. It's important to fish in the right biome and at the correct time of day to increase your chances of catching the desired fish [1:2]. Utilizing resources like the Stardew Valley wiki can help you plan your fishing trips more effectively [4].

Using Bait and Tackle

Using bait and tackle can significantly improve your fishing success. Bait can be attached to your fishing rod to make fish bite faster, while tackle can give various benefits, such as increasing the size of the fishing bar or reducing the escape rate of fish [2:1]. Linus Bait is one option mentioned for improving fishing outcomes [2:1].

Leveling Up Your Fishing Skill

As you level up your fishing skill, the fishing mini-game becomes easier. Higher levels increase the size of your fishing bar, making it easier to catch fish [3:3]. Consistent practice will gradually improve your skill, and using crab pots can contribute to leveling up, although the experience gained is minimal compared to actual fishing [2:5].

Community and Resources

Joining the community of Stardew Valley players can provide additional tips and support. Sharing experiences and strategies with others who have mastered the game can offer new insights and encouragement [3:4]. Additionally, creating or following guides tailored to specific seasons or fish can help streamline your fishing efforts [3].

By focusing on these areas, you'll be well on your way to mastering fishing in Stardew Valley. Happy fishing!

ORIGINAL POST

I believe I'm the world's worse fisherman. I've been reading about catching the new fish that causes a boss to spawn and one player said it may take up to 30 minutes or more to get this to happen and I fished nonstop for 3 and 1/2 hours and I couldn't catch anything better than a class a fish. Can anyone give me some help or pointers or even better can someone help me get the lost anglers rig. I didn't get to do that expedition so I never received it but I read it increases your odds of catching high class fish alot. I need all the help I can get lol

Honestly, I just used mealworms and caught almost everything. I didn't even put that much time into it. So if you just fish, and fish, and fish....you should be able to catch most, if not everything. Just be sure to be fishing in the right biome, the correct time of day, and during specific events (storms, etc.) that each fish requires.

I stopped at a rainy & humid world that had people on it. It was a planet at one of the rendezvous spots in the Aquarius Expedition so a lot of people were around. At one point ships were hovering around the water base with everyone fishing for that one. I strongly suggest fishing with others.

It took about 40 minutes using a bionic lure, but I was the one that caught it. Everyone quickly got a shot in on the boss and we took it out. Everyone that got a hit got the achievement (even though they didn't catch/release it).

If you did the Aquarius expedition and saved a base there, go to it and join others. Definitely makes it easier for everyone.

When you craft the different types of bait you can add them to the fishing rig you have on your multi-tool. Each one will have different effects.

Name Rarity % Size % Condition
Bionic Lure 94 2
Dangling Orb 35 2 Attracts diurnal fish
Magpulse Lure 35 2 Attracts storm-loving fish
Mealworms 30 2
Shadow Lure 35 2 Attracts nocturnal fish
Spicy Chum 79 2

You will want to make sure that you are using some kind of bait to get rarer fish, Spicy Chum and Bionic Lure being the best options for that.
You can also use other fish that you caught as bait, and should be able to see the effect it will have on rarity and size.

Do you click rapidly to fish ? I use to tap the button and never catch anything. I then realized that you can hold and let go of the button to stay on target with the fish. Fishing is now one of my favourite past times. Hope this helps

When I first got this game I had to watch a video tutorial to figure it out. When I first got my girlfriend the game, she had to do the same haha. It’s tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually pretty fun. Just take a few days in-game to just try fishing

What I did was start a new farmer, river farm, and then for the first four days after meeting Willy I did nothing but walk out my door, stand on the nearest riverbank, and fish.

I did this because I could not understand what the bobber was doing. It was all just a weird blur. Anyway, somewhere around the fourth day it clicked. My eyes adjusted. Something. And fishing became a lot easier when I went back to my actual farmer.

Am I the only one who thinks fishing in this game, next to farming and foraging is the easiest? I suck at combat though....

Make sure to max out the fishing bar, it should always be green. Fish either at the mountain lake or beach (beach is easier)...

Use Bait, Linus Bait and tackle...

Funny Fishing..

I just wanted to take the time out to say Ive been playing this game since it came out. Love the wiki especially the newest one but never knew that some fish were held to a certain season, weather & time of day (like SDV) 😹. I just never bothered to look at the fish wiki page & now Im about to have fun with this new update because fishing is not so bad in this game.

Question: Do we finally get the fishing rode in this update because I never got one? 🎣🐟

I think fishing in Stardew Valley is a very relaxing activity. Although catching the big fish is quite challenging, once you master the techniques, it's actually not that difficult. (The techniques here might be due to the mod being enabled. Lol) What do you think?

I only wish I had more space to put Fish Ponds so that I could fit a whole aquarium on the farm. I had a Four Corners farm that was so fun to use as a kind of collection for each species. The fish quests would get so weird, too! They'd ask for the most random items like Nautilus Shells and Golden Masks.

Ultimate Fishing Guide; All the things you didn't know.

Posted by thmtrxhsu · in r/StardewValley · 6 years ago

I'm sure there are a lot of fish guides, however I'm sure I'll mention at least one thing you didn't know.

For starters as many of you know how far you cast is strictly dependent on your fishing level; the type of fishing rod is irrelevant.

Second the quality of the fish has nothing to do with the the quality of the cast; zero, so never worry about casting perfect ever again. At best a perfect cast increases your chance slightly of getting either a better fish or a treasure chest, but ever so slightly.

Two things affect the quality of the fish:

  1. Shortest distance to any land or dock from where the cast lands; that is reg, silver and gold is hard-coded to specific distances from land not necessarily how far you cast. You can cast farther but be closer to land on the other side which will reduce the quality of the fish. By the same token distance from land also determines the types of fish you can catch. So fishing level and a well placed bobber are of prime importance. Do not rely on casting in the middle of darker water; this does not matter. Basically find the largest gap of water and cast directly in the middle of it. The precise effects of darker waters, logs and rocks are unknown; bite rate increase is one of the possibilities.
  2. A Perfect Catch , or an imperfect catch + daily luck

Luck & low energy also effect the likelihood that you will catch trash.

**Spoiler** the best possible fish start involves using the map glitch which works on all versions of Stardew Valley; to execute this at the beach, go to the beach, then move you character up until you only see the tip of his finger then scyth sway until the shadow disappears, then scyth some 50 more times, then press left, you must go all the way to the left before you can go south, you may even need to scyth to go outmost left, and you may need to scyth down to get down, then you can walk on the ocean and do exactly what I told you, find the largest gap of water that is the furthest from land and docks, you will not catch reg fish; this is impossible. You'll probably start by catching silver fish and once you reach fishing level 1, gold fish are in reach if you reel perfectly. Gold fish + perfect reel will also level up your fishing much faster. This glitch also works for the south river in town which for spring if it rains are your fishing level is 4 you can catch some of the cat fish; even at level 8 they are somewhat a pain. Once you reach level 5 or 6, I forget which level fishing + my fishing spots will give you gold...then there is no need for this cheat. At least you have to work for this cheat, and you are not overly rewarded; reasonably rewarded.

Now comes the topic that everyone botches; best fishing spots.

Everyone botches it, because it has a high correlation to fishing level.

However, as stated it is strictly distance to closest land.

If your fishing level is under < 5 then gold fish is either impossible or highly improbable.

So now I will define what best fishing spot means, but as you know it should mean greatest gap of water also put as furthest distance from any land or dock. And indeed these fishing spots which are not often mentioned if ever agree with this. Btw, when accessing distance to land is parallel to the casting position; adjacent distance to land is irrelevant.

So I have to examples of fishing spots where if your fishing level is 5 or greater gold fish are highly probable if not guaranteed.

The mountains: You probably think I'm going to say go to the island bla bla....nope that's not the best spot. The reason it is not the best spot will blow your mind. So the only distance to land that matters is the one parallel to the caster. So when you fish of the island, u know the spot, the distance to land is only calculated from the island; you would think this would be advantageous, but for whatever reason this is incorrect; split screens count negatively only when parallel to the caster. And get this, my spot the split screen is adjacent to the caster :) Have you figured out where it is?

It's basically on the left side, southern most portion casting off the small 1-1.5 lip of land.

Let's talk about the best fishing spot in town. Given the theory I have provided, where do you think it's at. If you said in the southern region you are correct, but if you refer any of the left most spots over there you are incorrect because that is not where the widest gap is. It is directly in between Willow lane 1 and Willow lane 2, hugging the curb :) No fishing spot in the mountain or town will beat either one of these.

Is there such a thing as an unlucky spot at an unlucky time; no. This would be too difficult to hard code in the game, and if it were hard coded people would eventually know to avoid them. Just keep your energy up and have the highest luck possible, and fish in the same spot. I programmed with C++ (although procedural when I was 13 without any help from anyone, Deitel How to Program, then again I'm naturally gifted when it comes to computers). Btw, if you are lucky cough cough the smartest place to fish is probably the mine; think about it what do catch except trash, algae, ghostfish and super fish; two of these are especially affected by luck. And don't forget to use Wild Bait after befriending Linus.

So that is hopefully everything you ever wanted to know about fishing in stardew valley, Go Raptors!!!

Wild bait has a lower chance to catch trash/algae but takes more resources to make. Kinda 50/50 situation in my opinion, really depends on how much you want to catch fish during a certain amount of time.

Leveling up and practice will clearly be an advantage. I struggled a crazy awful lot on IOS at the beginning. I think before reaching lvl 3 or 4, I almost only caught garbage and algae.
I surely must have lvl only from that btw. Then with insect bait, better fish cane, getting used, I lvl from 4 to 9 in a very small time.
Like someone else said, use winter to fish a crazy lot. you'll lvl quickly since apart from gathering, mining or farming in the mines, fishing can be done all day, using not too much energy and being efficient.

Everything you catch, counts. Including trash. So if you have a pond on your farm you can fish it. You will auto-catch a lot of trash, and your level will increase. It won't increase quickly, but it will go up. If your farm is the forest farm, the pond has river fish plus secret woods fish in it, so you should see a lot of carp as well as the occasional woodskip, but mostly it will be trash.

  • Think of the button as applying upward force against gravity, rather than as simply "move up".
  • Use small repeated taps to make the bar hover or descend slowly.
  • When the fish drops to the bottom, bring the bar down slowly so it doesn't bounce as much.
  • Once you get crab pots, put a few somewhere you visit often and keep harvesting them and loading them up with bait. You'll get a bit of fishing XP every time.
  • Get the better rods and start using bait and tackle once they become available.
  • When you see bubbles in the water, try to land your cast there. You'll hook fish faster.
  • Use Dish of the Sea or other fishing boost foods, especially when going after a particularly challenging catch. Higher fishing skill makes the green bar bigger, which makes catching easier.
  • Practice makes perfect.
  • Early on, ignore treasure chests unless the fish is kind enough to hang out right next to the chest. Later, you can practice getting them once you're better at getting catches anyway.

Trying to finish your fishing? Here are all the beginner to expert facts and tips you need to go from zero to hero (99). TL;DR cheat sheet included.

Posted by EgoGoner · in r/throneandliberty · 8 months ago

TL;DR cheat sheet: https://i.imgur.com/Ai9alEo.jpeg

Let's start off with the basics, but this is assuming you've fished at least a few dozen times. I'll be using the phrase "fishing codex" a bit, but I'm not referring to any codex entries, just the fishing section in the main options window. If I'm missing anything or anything is wrong, let me know.

Bait

  1. Use paste bait for any/all fish. No increased attraction chance for any size.
  2. Use shrimp bait for an increased chance to attract small fish.
  3. Use worm bait for medium.
  4. Use fish fillet bait for large.

Shadows

  1. Small shadow means a small fish.
  2. Medium means medium.
  3. Large means large.

How to catch fish

A fish will escape if it goes too far to the left or the right from the hook's starting position. So turn off the dynamic fishing camera, mark with your mouse (or whatever console users do) as the starting point, and make sure it stays near the middle.

To whittle down its stamina, you just pull in the opposite direction of where the fish is going. If it's going left, pull right. It's going right, pull left. However, if it's almost all the way left (for example), then it starts moving right, you may not want to pull left until it gets closer to the middle.

Don't let YOUR stamina bar "line" be all the way at the top or the bottom. If it's at the top, you're wasting an opportunity to pull the fish. If it's at the bottom, you're out of stamina and pulling the fish does nothing. Various fishing techniques all ostensibly come from these core rule, and there is a bit of nuance, but as long as you keep the main points in mind, you're good.

Fishing power and fishing rods

Your technique is important, but at the end of the day fishing power is king. If there seems to be "that one fish" that keeps getting away, check your technique, but it's probably a fishing power issue. There are plenty of videos on the internet on how to best increase your chances including how to get a better rod and how to increase your fishing level.

The latter is easy, just eat some rye bread (if you're fishing, you should be cooking) and fish. The former is essentially RNG or working toward upgrading your bamboo rod using the fishing rewards. Again, plenty of guides on where and how to get each better rod. In short, amitoi expeditions, world bosses, and filling out your fishing codex.

Filling out the fishing codex

This is probably the main reason you clicked on this post, so let's get to it already.

The codex is split into two sections: seawater fish; non-seawater fish (freshwater, swamps, and lava fish). Are you fishing from an ocean? Seawater fish. Anywhere else? Non-seawater.

The catch location is based off your current location shown in the upper right on the map. Let's use the body of water Crescent Moon Lake as an example. If you're on the West side of the lake, it will say you're in Golden Rye Pastures. If you're on the East side of the lake, it will say you're in Urstella Fields. (Don't get TOO close to the water on the Urstella Fields side or it will change to Golden Rye Pastures.) So for example, largemouth bass has an entry for both places, just make sure you're fishing from this body of water from both sides and you'll get both entries for this fish.

As far as when you can actually catch these fish, there are 3 categories.

  1. Fish you can catch at any time
  2. Fish you can only catch while it's raining
  3. Fish you can only catch while fishing in a famous fishing location

The priority of which fish you should be focusing on at any given point is 3, then 2, then 1. Let's start at 1.

Fish you can catch at any time

Self-explanatory. Day, night, eclipse, wind, war, peace, doesn't matter. Got a rod, some bait, and the correct body of water? You can catch it. Well, you can try, at least. Most of the time, just find a body of water on the map in the area you need and fish from it.

However, there are some areas that might be tricky to find the right body of water, and even trickier to find the exact spot you can actually fish from in that body of water. The list below is where these tricky areas are, and all of them are for the non-seawater fish section. All of the seawater location are pretty easily found: just find the nearest seawater. (Also, for Laslan Coast and Stonegard Coast, swim off the respective coasts until your locations changes to the one you need, find the nearest island, then fish.)

  1. Kastleton: Directly North of Kastleton Arena.
  2. Carmine Forest: Slightly West from the Carmine Forest waypoint. (Small body of water with a waterfall, stand on the rocks on the right side and cast to the left side. Exact spot is a bit hard to find.)
  3. Nesting Grounds: Near River of Abundance, closer to the waterfall
  4. Ruins of Turayne: North of Blackhowl Plains, just Northeast of Northern Campsite
  5. Fonos Basin: Southeast of Fonos Basin Waypoint. Stand on a middle log sticking out from the bridge, then cast aiming across the bridge.
  6. Veder Mountains: North of Vienta Village, there are 3 bodies of water. It's the Northmost one.

Fish you can only catch while it's raining

When it rains, you can now catch certain non-seawater fish that can only be found in Tevent Temple (moat, a bit tricky to find an exact spot, but keep trying), Akidu Valley (a body of water near the ground fills up), and Stonegard Castle (the moat inside the castle). This is because water now fills these areas to make them fishable.

  1. Tevent Temple: Imp Catalufa, Lanquis Barracuda
  2. Akidu Valley: Dolly Varden Trout, Pajama Cardinalfish
  3. Stonegard Castle: Fonsine Barracuda

Fish you can only catch while fishing in a famous fishing location

First let's go over how famous fishing locations work. I'll use my server as an example.

At 9:33am, 2 (yes, ONLY TWO) famous fishing locations spawn somewhere in the world. Then again at 12:33pm, then again at 3:33pm, then again at 6:33pm, so on and so forth. 2 locations every 3 hours, at the same time, every time.

Your server's spawn time will likely be different, and it might also reset with the weekly and/or server maintenance. Keep this in mind or you're going to have a bad time.

You can see the icon on the main map even if you zoom out all the way (except for Ruins of Turayne where the icon appears to be broken completely and not visible at all). 2 additional possible locations are Syleus's Abyss 5F and 6F. You can see those icons on their respective maps as well.

Pro tip, right before they spawn, remove all icons except for waypoints, abyss dungeons, and famous fishing locations. Zoom out all the way, then select and de-select the famous fishing location option. Congratulations, you now have a blinking icon showing you were to go. Don't see any? Make sure it's enabled, then check Syleus's Abyss 5F and 6F. Only see one? The last remaining one is probably Ruins of Turayne.

So you went to the icon, now what? You see that circle of fish there? WELL, FISH IN IT ALREADY! In this "school of fish" there are a limited amount of fish that can be caught. then it will be destroyed. Let's say there are 100 fish in the "school." Well, if you're by yourself, you can hook 100 fish, then the famous fishing location will be destroyed. If there are 10 people, then they each get 10 hooks. If there are 100, well I hope you're lucky because you only get 1 hook with the other 99 people and the spot will go away faster than you can say, "I hate silvery anchovy."

Conclusion

With this information (and any corrections and tips from commenters) you should be able to catch all the fish eventually. Just keep at it, and you'll get to 99 in no time.

You got this, anglers!

I have been doing this recently. Thank you for all the info! still shock me the small details this game have, like those water locations only while raining. I asked in my guild and nobody, no one, knew about it.

I'll share my method for fishing that relies less upon watching the movement of the float.

  1. Only watch for the direction the fish takes at the initial hooking. If it goes left, start pressing D, if it goes right, you start pressing A.
  2. From this point onwards, ignore the float and just look at the stamina bar for the Fish (left bar). Continue to press your key until that bar stops moving. Once the bar stops, then it is time to use the opposite direction.

As the OP stated, you need to manage your rods stamina, but as far as knowing when to change direction with your drag, it is as simple as watching for when the fish stamina bar stops moving down.

You are then just managing the interaction of the two bars. Fish bar stop - change direction. Rod Bar gets BELOW the fish stamina bar level - pause a moment to regen the rod stamina and continue with the direction until the fish bar stop.

I have only 1 fish to get to complete the collection and this method has worked well for me.

Key Considerations for Fishing in Stardew Valley

  1. Fishing Rods:

    • Start with the Bamboo Pole, which is available early in the game.
    • Upgrade to the Fiberglass Rod for bait and tackle options.
    • The Iridium Rod is the best option, allowing for both bait and tackle.
  2. Bait and Tackle:

    • Use bait to increase your chances of catching fish. You can craft bait using bug meat.
    • Tackle can enhance your fishing experience; for example, the Spinner increases the bite rate.
  3. Fishing Locations:

    • Different fish are available in various locations: rivers, lakes, and the ocean.
    • Seasonal changes affect fish availability; check the calendar for seasonal fish.
  4. Time of Day and Weather:

    • Some fish are only available at specific times (e.g., night or early morning).
    • Rainy days can increase the chances of catching certain fish, like catfish.
  5. Fish Types:

    • Familiarize yourself with the types of fish and their locations. For example:
      • Spring: Catfish, Sunfish, and Shad.
      • Summer: Tuna, Red Snapper, and Pufferfish.
      • Fall: Salmon, Octopus, and Squid.
      • Winter: Ice Pips and Squid.
  6. Fishing Skill Level:

    • Your fishing skill increases as you catch fish, unlocking new recipes and improving your fishing proficiency.
    • Higher skill levels make it easier to catch fish and reduce the chances of losing them.

Tips for Success:

  • Practice your timing when reeling in fish; wait for the fish to bite before starting to reel.
  • Use the fishing mini-game to your advantage; keep the fish within the green bar to successfully catch it.
  • Consider using the Fish Pond to farm fish for additional resources and income.

Recommendation: Focus on completing the Fish Collection for rewards and achievements. Prioritize fishing during different seasons to catch all available fish and maximize your fishing skill.
