How to Open an E*TRADE Account

TL;DR To open an E*TRADE account, visit their website, fill out the necessary forms with personal information, and submit required documents for verification. Be prepared for potential delays due to regulatory checks.

Account Setup Process

Opening an E*TRADE account involves visiting their website and filling out a series of forms with your personal information. This includes details like your Social Security number and driver's license [4:3][5:1]. You may also need to upload these documents for verification [4:4]. The process can take several days, especially if there are issues with document verification or if additional information is required [4:1][4:9].

Verification and Restrictions

E*TRADE, like other financial institutions, is required by law to verify the identity of its customers as part of KYC (Know Your Customer) and CIP (Customer Identification Program) regulations [5:1]. This means that even after opening an account, you might face restrictions until all necessary information is verified [4:2][4:8]. If your account is restricted, you will need to contact customer service to resolve the issue [4:7].

Common Issues and Solutions

Many users have reported issues with account restrictions and delays in processing deposits or withdrawals [5:9]. These can often be resolved by contacting customer service and providing any missing documentation [4:5]. It's important to ensure that all information provided during account setup is accurate and matches your official documents to avoid delays [4:6].

Alternative Options

If you encounter persistent issues with E*TRADE, consider exploring other brokerage platforms such as Fidelity or Schwab, which may offer smoother account transfer processes [2:1]. Some users have found other platforms more reliable and user-friendly [1:2].

Overall, while E*TRADE offers a comprehensive suite of banking and brokerage services, opening an account can involve navigating regulatory requirements and potential delays. Being proactive about providing accurate information and following up with customer service can help streamline the process.

They took $10 out of your account? What for? They shouldn't be taking anything unless you've started trading...

That’s wtf I was wondering! Robinhood won’t even send the two transactions to my account to verify and E*TRADE does this... I’m kinda fed up and just gonna stick with crypto.. fuck the stock market and these apps...

Robinhood's verification transactions do take a while to come through but after that their app is almost completely flawless - at least it was for me and most people.

E*Trade is just useless altogether. Don't let this shitty company ruin your hope though. Almost every other platform is better than E*Trade and if you're only just looking to trade American Stocks, I'd stick with RH (once the verification transactions come through of course).

If it’s just a brokerage account there shouldn’t be a Min on the account. I set mine up on the 28th with 800. Started trading on the 4th of this month

Okay but I never authorized to add money and was just trying to set up an account. It’s just a regular trading account. I literally clicked free account. Trade stocks. That’s it. Fuck the stock market I’m going with crypto. All of these trading apps are scams.

Problems with account transfer within E-Trade

Posted by therebbie · in r/etrade · 2 years ago

We are trying to transfer assets in a custodial account for someone who is no longer a minor. E-Trade insists on transferring to a totally new account. We provided all the documentation they asked for to open the new accounts but nothing has been transferred. Every day when it hasn't transferred we find they want something new.

This is for a college student, so we are trying to walk him through the process. We run into things like after getting the student and his mother (custodian) on the phone and answering all the questions we find the next day that none of that is acceptable because the student was not on the phone by himself. Never mind that none of the phone numbers people or addresses have changed. They already have all of it.

Does anyone have a phone number for their executive offices? We are at our wits end. I would never suggest using this firm to anyone.

I also had problems with transferring my brokerage account to ETRADE, I’ve been calling them for the past 3 weeks and they still haven’t resolved it, every time I call it’s a different agent. Would also be interested in contacting the executive offices somehow

The now of age minor needs to provide SSC and DL and then call customer service with both the previous minor and whoever the custodian of the account is.

Yea - did all that. Apparently it wasn't good enough. They already have all the info. We provided it again. That is still not good enough for E-Trade.

I remember doing this for my kids. Have your son create an account, call them, and request the transfer. Nobody else should be required here assuming he's at the right age. Have him ask the representative to process any documents with him on the phone as this has been an something you have had trouble with.

why stick with etrade? If you trust the process of account transfer at Fidelity or Schwab, you can initiate it without dealing with CSP of Etrade.

2 upvotes on reddit
therebbie · OP · 2 years ago

That's the thing. We are actually trying to transfer the holdings out to another firm. We tried to transfer initially, but they rejected the request. They're making us create a new account titled only in the student's name first.

E*trade Bank Account Questiom

Posted by GrandBarnacle1265 · in r/etrade · 12 days ago

So I’ve had an E*Trade account for well over a decade but never used it much. I’ve always been curious about using a brokerage and bank all in one solution. Since they are owned by Morgan Stanley there’s no question the banking back end will be solid.

What’s everyone’s experience with using E*trade as a bank? Any negatives?

I’ve used E-Trade bank accounts (checking and savings) for probably 15-20 years (whenever they started offering it), and I’ve never had a problem, though I don’t use it heavily (basically do bill pay, transfers, and write an occasional check).

Love the ATM fee refunds, although that feature may have been grandfathered over from before MS acquired them. Love the high transfer limits. I basically use my ETrade max rate checking account as the central hub for all our finances.

I transfer low-to-mid-5 figures maybe once or twice a quarter. Mainly as the capital needs of my business ebb and flow. I think the limit is $100k per day. Never been accused of fraud… Is that something to think about?

1 upvotes on reddit

What has you use the max rate checking instead of the regular checking just curious? I was thinking about that one, but I don’t keep a large balance in my checking account.

1 upvotes on reddit
OldBrewser · 11 days ago

I can’t remember why I chose the max-rate checking, I’ve had it for decades. I actually wasn’t aware they had any other kind of checking other than this kind of account until now (though I may have known about other types when I looked into it 20 years ago). It’s actually my back-up personal account, not my primary checking. I established it when my savings account was frozen one time right when I needed to tap the money in an emergency. I end up using it primarily as a place to land distributions from my business before I move that money either into my primary checking or into retirement/investment accounts.

AntVast1025 · 10 days ago

I’ve had a max-rate checking, complete savings for 20 years and now premium savings. Only problem I encountered was they returned a money order made payable to me when I attempted to deposit it. They said they don’t accept money orders or two party endorsed checks for deposit.

I’ve been a customer of ETRADE for many years and have used many of their banking and brokerage products. Their checking and savings accounts consistently offer some of the highest APYs in the industry. The banking side is very solid - everything you’d expect from a traditional account is there. Since it’s an online bank, they don’t accept cash deposits, but that’s standard for banks without physical branches nowadays. One standout feature is their free online wire transfers with no dollar limits - a benefit I haven’t seen at any other bank I’ve used. The only piece of advice I’d give is to avoid a mistake I see many people make, not only with ETRADE/Morgan Stanley but with most new bank accounts these days: don’t start fully using them immediately. With today’s regulatory environment and the heavy-handed automated security systems banks rely on, new accounts are often subject to frustrating restrictions in the first few weeks after opening. The new rule of thumb is this: open your new account, deposit a minimum balance, order your checks, receive your debit card, and then leave it alone for 90 to 120 days. Only after that waiting or rather “dating” period should you start using it actively. If you skip this step, here’s what usually happens: you won’t be able to link more than one external account for ACH transfers until after that initial period passes. You won’t be able to send online wire transfers either (though you still can do it via a customer care representative for a fee of $25). Routine actions like mobile check deposits or transfers from another bank can trigger account restrictions. You’ll end up spending hours on hold with customer service just to get access back, only to face new restrictions the next day. So, if you think you’ll need the account, open it 3–4 months in advance. Once the waiting period is over, you’ll find ETRADE to be a good, reliable bank with excellent features.

Account Not Approved for Trading

Posted by svd2311 · in r/etrade · 4 years ago

Tried to put a buy through, no luck. Said my account wasn't approved yet, told me that right when I hit preview. It also tells me that my account is restricted due to a change in its status, some features may be limited, and I need to speak to E*TRADE on the phone. It tells me I have my money withheld from purchasing power and withdrawal right now, and nothing available for investment currently.

Is this a problem with my account, or do I merely need to wait for my deposit to fully process? It hasn't gone through my bank account either, so I know I technically don't have anything in the account right now. New to investing, any help is appreciated!

I'm living this. I made my account a month ago and had restricted access and was told to call. I had to wait for 2 and a half hours on the phone before talking to a human being and told me I just had to upload documents like social security card, drivers license, etc (No idea why I had to call just for them to tell me that). I uploaded the documents, and account is still restricted 1 month later. My documents have been reviewed and accepted, but now they want me to call them again and won't tell me why. I've had money stuck in my account for the last month and it's frustrating beyond belief.

Can't transfer money back to bank. Everyone on this subreddit just says to transfer from account, but when transfering the only option is my bank into my account. It's almost like they don't want people to be able to withdraw their money.

I had to wait on hold for another 2 hours to talk to someone. I had forgotten that the address on my license was different from what I had provided for everything else because I had moved. I moved to Oregon to fight wildfires from Florida, after just a few months they closed my account with open orders because of suspicious activity and they will talk to me about it at all. I talking to a friend in Portland who works in fraud at citi bank and says they use IP addresses and your deposits and your address on file to alter them of suspicious activity. What pisses me off most is i have been a customer since 2015 and they would not even give me a chance to prove my identity or even speak to me about this matter.

So in short if you move or use a VPN you could be at risk of this happening to you. I literally just posted about this on this forum 20 seconds ago

What is up with this company?

Posted by Tapiture- · in r/etrade · 2 years ago

I’m an unwilling user of Etrade since my company uses it for stock plans. Since using it, I’ve had repeated problems with getting money out of ETrade. First I had to call them and provide personal information just to add my primary brokerage (Schwab) as an external bank account. Then I had to call again the first time I wanted to transfer money to Schwab. Since then it was relatively okay, and after waiting the ridiculous 3 days for “settlement” I’ve been able to transfer money out without issues. That was until this week when it wouldn’t allow me to and told me to call their customer service. Customer service gave some vague reason that a “restriction was placed on my account” and that if I provided them with some “general information like net worth, line of business, job title” they could try to get the restriction lifted in the next few days. They didn’t even have specific questions or information they wanted, they just asked me to rattle off some personal information they could have. So I did that, and they said that if I didn’t hear anything within 48 hours to call again. They also said that the department who does these verifications isn’t reachable by phone, so don’t even try.

I have never experienced such issues and weirdness using Schwab, I’ve always been able to withdraw online without issue, and the “settlement” of funds is instantaneous. I get such a weird feeling like E*trade is purposefully constructing obstacle courses to get your money out such that they can lend it out and make interest or whatever funny business they’re up to.

I don’t understand why anyone would use this brokerage if they had a choice.

I've been a customer for over 20 years and have not had any such issues through cash/stock/account transfers, marriage, account assignment and sharing, taxable/tax-deferred accounts, IPOs, or anything of the sort. 401k and ESPP plans may have additional limitations, but it sounds like you may be running into issues around your account not being fully set up with all required regulatory information. Once all of this is worked out, I'd expect things to go smoother.

I've had accounts with E*trade(prior to the dotcom boom/bust) - covering the gamut from trading account/rollover iras/roth iras, espp/stock plans, coverdells. The main issues I usually see are the linking of external accounts but once those are resolved, no issues anymore

From the Customer Agreement: “To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, E*TRADE is required by Applicable Law to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies any person who opens an Account.”

E*TRADE is a bit touchy about gathering this info, any million different reasons can cause an update. All banks and brokerages are legally required to understand their customers under what’s called KYC (know your customer) and CIP (customer identification program)

Tapiture- · OP · 2 years ago

I guess that’s what it is, I talked to them again today and it’s called a “principal (or principle) review.” They updated the timeline to 1-2 weeks… What’s odd is there were no restrictions for months and then all the sudden I can’t withdraw. I’d understand if they wanted to restrict options trading, short selling etc. before having more complete info. But restricting any withdrawals seems a bit mendacious.

1 upvotes on reddit
FabulousAd6130 · 2 years ago

The reason for that is cuz the account can be opened if you just put something in the necessary boxes no matter what it is, but there are periodic reviews that are done by real humans and not just an automated system to make sure the info makes sense. Those are the principals.

It takes longer to go thru that which is why your account was active until they found something they needed to clarify because the alternative is having accounts sitting empty for weeks until they can be reviewed and that's just bad business. It's the same everywhere not just etrade

1 upvotes on reddit
FabulousAd6130 · 2 years ago

ACH transfers take 3 business days, that's standard. It's a federal system not an etradev system.

Also as a financial institution they have to verify your employment and income and other personal information for all accounts.

If you opened the account without clearly providing that information, they don't go back and delete the account, they just go back and restrict it until you are able to provide that information. This happens at all financial institutions because it is info required by the government.

You probably just answer the employment and income questions vaguely and didn't care while submitting your application to the point they had to speak with you to get clarity.

1 upvotes on reddit
trashpandas4life- · 2 years ago

Settlement is an industry standard. Does your brokerage account outside of etrade have margin? That would make a difference. I'm not sure if margin would matter if you're selling shares out of your stock plan. You might have to wait for the settlement anyway.

Brokerages are required to verify certain pieces of personal information when you open an account even if it's your company's stock plan.

Need help: E*TRADE closed all of my accounts

Posted by rentalsearch234 · in r/Banking · 2 years ago

With the interest rates rising, I’ve moved money from savings between different savings accounts for higher rates. Never more than 6 transfers per month. ETRADE was 3.5% APY and another was 4.15% so I moved it out. ETRADE initially locked my account and asked me to speak with them immediately. I spoke to them and explained their rates were low and that’s why I moved it out. They said no worries and my accounts were unlocked later that day.

The following week (today) I received multiple letters closing my checking, savings and my brokerage account for company RSUs. Now I can’t see any of my RSUs and they said my other accounts are going to be closed in 30 days. I am able to transfer the remaining funds out of the checking and savings accounts but my company awards RSUs regularly through E*TRADE, how do I deal with this?

I have just submitted a CPFB complaint, what else can I do to have at least the brokerage account reinstated?

I’ve always been someone who saves and has used multiple savings accounts over the last 20+ years and never had a bank close any of my accounts like this before. When I called in they just said there’s nothing they can do and they can’t tell me why they have closed the accounts.

Seeking help and suggestions as to how to get this fixed?

Additionally if it’s not possible to fix my accounts with E*TRADE, do I contact HR at my company and ask if they can use a different brokerage for the RSUs? I have other brokerages for 10-15+ years and never had an issue like this before.

It's unlikely that your company will use a different brokerage for the RSUs just for you. Companies normally have a bulk settlement account at one brokerage to handle all their RSUs. Maybe you can set up a new ETRADE brokerage account to handle your RSUs (if they haven't imposed a lifetime ban on you)?
The closure of your E
TRADE bank accounts is a totally different matter and will likely have been a commercial decision and not subject to reinstatement. CPFB will probably disallow your complaint.

Two questions about E*Trade

I have an old login that no longer has an open account under it. When I try to login it says to call customer service. Is there a way to reactivate that old login, perhaps by opening an account over the phone? Or do I need to create a new login either way?

Also, are both VT and VTWAX available for weekly auto-investment? Can you setup auto investment to buy every Tuesday or Wednesday?

Bonus question: what does referring a friend get you? I see people posting referral links.

Regarding your old account: you can call Etrade and have them merge your accounts. I had up to 3 accounts at one point (I had two joint accounts and didn’t want to share the password to my personal, non joint account). E*trade merged them in 2 minutes while on the phone, I originally called them to talk about a separate issue, but they offered to do this. Even though you’ve got no accounts, it’s still wise to do this - they’ll ask you which login/username you want to keep and merge.

You can also setup auto-investment. Use the E*trade desktop version on a computer and explore auto-deposit+investment.

Referring a friend does nothing unless the friends deposit $500-50k usd, and it’s minimal so not even worth it unless they do $10k+ usd.

Fidelity is commission free for stocks I believe.

how to open an E*TRADE account

Here are the key steps to open an E*TRADE account:

  1. Visit the E*TRADE Website:

    • Go to E*TRADE's official website.
  2. Choose Account Type:

    • Decide on the type of account you want to open (individual brokerage, joint account, retirement account, etc.).
  3. Start the Application:

    • Click on the "Open an Account" button, usually found on the homepage.
  4. Provide Personal Information:

    • Fill out the application form with your personal details, including:
      • Name
      • Address
      • Social Security number
      • Date of birth
      • Employment information
      • Financial information (income, net worth, investment experience)
  5. Set Up Your Account:

    • Choose your account features, such as margin trading or options trading, if applicable.
  6. Review and Submit:

    • Review your information for accuracy and submit your application.
  7. Fund Your Account:

    • Once your account is approved, you’ll need to fund it. You can transfer funds from a bank account, roll over from another brokerage, or deposit checks.
  8. Complete Identity Verification:

    • E*TRADE may require additional identity verification, which could include uploading documents.

Important Considerations:

  • Minimum Deposit: Check if there’s a minimum deposit requirement for the type of account you are opening.
  • Fees: Familiarize yourself with any trading fees, account maintenance fees, or commissions that may apply.
  • Promotions: E*TRADE often has promotions for new account holders, so look for any bonuses or offers.

Recommendation: Make sure to have all necessary documents ready (like your ID and bank information) to streamline the application process. If you’re new to investing, consider starting with a practice account or educational resources E*TRADE provides to build your confidence.
