TL;DR Blackjack is a card game where the goal is to get your hand's value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. You play against the dealer, and basic strategy can help reduce losses.
Basic Gameplay
Initial Deal: The dealer gives each player two cards, typically face-up, while the dealer has one card face-up and one face-down [1:1].
Card Values: Number cards are worth their face value, face cards (King, Queen, Jack) count as 10, and Aces can be either 1 or 11 [4:6].
Player Actions: Players can choose to "hit" (take another card) or "stand" (keep their current hand). The goal is to have a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer without going over [1:1].
Dealer's Turn: After all players have finished their turns, the dealer reveals their face-down card and must hit until they reach at least 17 [1:1].
Winning: If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's without exceeding it, you win. If the dealer busts (goes over 21), all remaining players win [5:1].
Strategy and Tips
Basic Strategy: Using a blackjack strategy chart can significantly improve your odds by advising when to hit, stand, double down, or split pairs based on your hand and the dealer’s visible card [4:1]
[4:2].
Card Counting: While controversial and often frowned upon in casinos, card counting can give players an edge by tracking the ratio of high to low cards remaining [3:2].
Skill vs. Luck: Blackjack involves both skill and luck. Basic strategy helps minimize losses and maximize wins, but outcomes still depend heavily on chance [5:1].
Common Misconceptions
Beatable Game: While blackjack is one of the few casino games where strategy can reduce the house edge, it's not guaranteed to be profitable for casual players [5:1].
Soft Hands: A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. If you hit and the Ace becomes a 1, the hand becomes a hard hand [4:7].
Learning Resources
Practice: Many online platforms offer free blackjack games where you can practice without financial risk [5:1].
Strategy Charts: These are widely available online and can be used to guide decision-making during play [4:3]
[4:5].
By understanding these basics and strategies, you can enjoy blackjack more effectively and potentially improve your chances of winning.
Can someone explain in simple terms how to play blackjack? I love the game so much, but keep forgetting how to play, so any help would be much appreciated.
Yes. Grab a stack of money.. go to black jack table. Lay money down and keep saying “hit me” until you are out of money.
The design is very human👍🏾😄
Dealer gives you 2 cards, facedown. On your turn, you can ask for more cards, which will be dealt face-up for everyone to see. Your goal is to get the sum of the values of your cards as close to 21 as you can without going over. Dealer is doing the same thing. Closest wins.
I was feeling frisky and about to leave the casino and wandered into the high limit room and saw an empty table for double deck BJ. The minimum floored me ; $200 a hand.
I thought it would be fun to play one hand and see what happens. I get pitched the cards and look down at K9, dealer showing an 8. I stand and the dealer flips a 10, so nice $200 win for me
I decided I was either going to win a lot of just leave even so I stayed there. I proceeded to win 5 total hands in a row. Including a very scary 66 vs a dealer 5, split get another 6. 3 hands with $600 out have a 16, a 13 and and a 19 (I know I was suppose to double the 9 vs a 5 but I was too nervous to drop that much more on the table)
I got a nice picture with my orange chip ($1k). Left the table +$1350 after a $50 tip to the dealer
The high hasn't worn off yet. I needed to talk type I drove because I'm so amped up
Hope you guys are having similar luck
I recently went on a run, that I know for a fact isn’t usual in BJ. I’m a rookie in BJ and should have upped bets but kept my bets steady at the min $25 hands. I bought in for $200 and left with $600. I was winning almost every hand and got only 1 BJ. The times I did lose I upped bets to $100 to make my way up and I hit 3/4 times. It was a surreal to even leave up haha
Vegas a couple years ago I lost about 40k in a week period of time ....
Won in back in an hour with my last 300 . And this was on a table that wasn't high limit . Just didn't lose a hand in a shoe after pressing all my winnings until I hit the max bet which I believe was 5k.
Sad that I didn't win anything in the trip , but hell of comeback in right before I left for airport .
I wanted to keep pushing it so bad. I kept thinking about pressing my bet after each win
I feel like we are just paying for this type of rush
That’s one hell of a redemption arc pulling that off right before heading out is wild.
Nice. Seemingly once in a lifetime for a nominal gain. Remember the feeling but also quit, full stop
Oh yeah, definitely not going to be a regular thing
That’s a 2 week paycheck for me so it feels super nice to walk away. Part of me thought I should have kept playing until I lost but I’m glad I left
Good job
It goes south 8 times out of ten as so many chase $25 losses into $500 losses
It’s hard to grasp someone did win and walked. Be the prime Example
Great job leaving and the hardest part for most.. drive home happy instead of miserable!! I always loved the feeling of depositing the casinos money in the bank the next day. I try to run when I feel it turn. Even if up only a couple hundred or thousands.. because I’ve made the mistake of ignoring it and pressing and always lose.. the difference between degenerate gamblers and side hustle gamblers is exactly that!! The degens always stay and blow it back, always see more no matter the amount up. Hats watching friends like that and never ends well.
Congratulations on your little run... i dont play blackjack much unless in the mood and it has to be just me or 1-2 players at most. Im mostly a baccarat guy.
LITTLE STORY: i worked at a casino about 15 yrs ago in California while finishing my engineering degree. Long story short.... a guy had a awesome run.... his chips built up to 15k in 2hrs. He even called his gf to tell her about his luck and how he was gonna buy her the handbag she wanted.
I think he started around maybe 2k.... he's estatic + gambling euphoria/greed/invincibility starts to check it. Thats a dangerous loop where u get a bad beat/ play a hand u shouldnt/ experiment on a whim etc.
The guy loses every single dime in about 1.5 hrs 💀.... he looked devastated... he even said " what am i gonna tell my gf.... shes gonna be pissed" .... ya think!?
Step 1: just throw your money in a landfill. It's quicker that way.
blackjack is a lot easier to beat than poker
If you count cards, yes. That is literally the only way to beat the house over time. Other than that, see Step 1.
$7.99 for a 33 page Ebook... Lol.
containing everything you need to know to start a new career. you could spend 4 years and 50k at college and not get as much valuable knowledge.
Anyway this is a poker subreddit, it doesn't belong here.
You seem lost, here’s an r/maps for you
Man ngl this is dope now people are gonna understand the game better like us blackjack masters TuT Only few people know about how to outplay the opponent's hand and cards.
That would be true if people cared to even learn it. Most will take 1 look at this table and think it takes a genuis to apply it. I'll be surprised if even a few people take this on board, because the ones that realise it's a math game have already learnt basic strategy. I'd love to see a time where we can use all the player advantages of BJ though, to increase that winrate just 1% with double down, split pairs etc but when I think of how those may be inplemented, it's a coding nightmare.
If being a blackjack master means using this chart, then everyone can be one.
Did you compute it or did you just guess at the strategy?
I didn't compute this, I found some basic strategy charts online and adapted them to this version of blackjack. It's all accurate though.
The problem with this is that the odds for most blackjack games are different to dank memer's implementation of blackjack, specifically due to the random multiplier payouts.
I mean if you just search up blackjack strategy it'll come up with a lot of charts that are the same.
One thing that people always miss: if your Ace turns into a 1, it ain't soft anymore. It's hard as a rock! It's weird because you'll have idk a soft 15, hit and get a 10 for a hard 15.
Just a question,is k/q/j count as 10?
I dont get how this is so accurate, but it works almost everytime. tysm. I will wonder how you did this.
No problem! I can explain why it works if you're interested?
Commented for exposure. Neat chart!
I’ve heard people say blackjack is one of the few casino games you can “beat” with the right strategy, but I wonder if that’s realistic for casual players. I’ve been learning basic strategy, and while it’s definitely improved my game, I’m not sure I’d ever get to the point of consistent profit. Maybe it’s more about reducing losses than expecting to win in the long run. I’ve been playing both for fun and as a challenge to myself. What’s your take, skill game or still just luck in the end?
Skill definitely helps, especially with basic strategy. I check iGamingNuts for blackjack-friendly casinos, they don’t host games themselves, but they test and recommend ones with fair rules and decent payout speeds.
Yeah, you can play blackjack smart, but it ain’t magic lol. Basic strategy cuts losses and can snag some wins. I play for the challenge, and on 1win the tables run smooth, so you can actually practice without stress. Mix of skill + luck, for sure
I remember back in middle school, my friend showed me blackjack. We would bet our snacks during lunch. And somehow that fucker always beat me causing my Scooby Doo gummies to be in his damn hands. Then we both got detention because a teacher saw us playing it.
Lmao, anyway, on my 21st birthday, I plan on doing a lot of things, and somehow an ad popped up for casinos. I know I won't get addicted, since blackjack is the only game I know there. I wouldn't be too invested on other games (knock on wood).
I doubt I'd go...but in case...could I get some advice? Ever since me and my friend played that game, I always assumed it was luck based, but online it's saying it's "skill".
I've always sucked at it. I always assumed 13 was a bad number to hit on unless the dealer had a 10.
Or hitting on 15/16 is an automatic lose.
So, just...what the heck am I doing wrong? Do I just risk it all the time?
It’s both, over time you will lose unless you count cards. Search basic strategy you should hit on a 15 or 16 vs a 10
Surrender a 15 or 16 vs a 10 if it’s offered, hit otherwise. I agree with you, just wanted to point out different table rules can lead to different basic strategy and it’s important to know what your tables rules are
You lose a lot of money not hitting your stiffs, bring a basic strategy card with you and follow that if you must play. But it’s only a matter of time until you lose your entire bankroll, even with basic strategy, if you aren’t counting
But I never hit 15..........
Then you’re losing a lot of extra money!
If you just want to play casually every once in a while for fun and lose less often while doing so, basic strategy is the way to go.
My tips as a degen. As so many people have said I’m not worried about getting addicted.
-be willing to lose all the money you walked in with. If you lose that leave. -set limits (if you win a certain amount leave, because you will more then likely lose it back and chase trying to get back ti even) -if you aren’t having fun…leave. -if you think oh man this is easy I think I can do this to earn extra money, leave and don’t come back. The casino will always win. -if you make a trip and think you need to play enough to make it a free trip, stop that being up 25 dollars just made the trip cheaper than it was. -if you win big on your first visit take the money and don’t go back ever.
Practice basic strategy on an app
Ah right, thank you!
I have been playing Blackjack in an online casino exclusively since March. I am playing it like a business, tracking it like an investment on a spreadsheet. I have a return on investment of 18% and a bankroll appreciation of over 1000%. What an amazing game. I am approaching this with a short term hit and run approach. I would like to hear from others who are doing similar things in online casinos.
Oh boy, you are making the biggest rookie mistake you could possibly make with online gambling. That mistake is thinking you can make money off of this. You have simply gotten very lucky, that's it. There is no method to beating the online casinos.
Your sample size is not enough. You haven't even gotten 1000 hands documented and you're assuming that's going to extrapolate out into the future. I got news for you, IT WILL NOT. Proper blackjack simulations are played out over 100s of thousands of hands and the math is not in your favor.
The issue with your "method" is that there is going to come a session where you will get absolutely COOKED. There will be a session that you will win almost zero hands. But because you are so convinced you can make money, you will probably chase (thinking you'll win it back) and then all of the money you won will get wiped out. It is statistically guaranteed with enough hands played that you will hit a horrendous stretch of hands.
The only thing that has happened here is that you've gotten extremely lucky and started documenting during some positive blackjack variance. The negative variance is coming and it will be very ugly for you.
hhahhahahahah. Thanks for your vote of confidence. That is why it is called gambling. I am on my way to 1000 games. Then we shall see.
Thanks for the prediction. So far yours has not arrived.
Which Online Casino's do you like best for playing Blackjack? I have been playing really well also, I turned a free dollar into over $100 on Chumba & into $44 on Stake.us.
I am just curious which places you like playing best, because some of them seem like they are straight rigged.
Nice work buddy, I got some more sites in my bio with dailies you can up on blackjack also
I use Sports Interaction. They are well known as a sports-book. I was never good at sports so decided to try their casino. It certainly cannot be rigged, as I am winning over 88% of my sessions. I am playing mostly the Random Number Generated games but have started adding in the occasional real dealer session. I have been with them for years. They pay out fast too. The last time I withdrew about 2 am and had my money by the time I woke up around noon.
Lol 😂
What is so funny?
Because you can’t win in the long run no matter what you think. You’re just running +EV there’s no legit strategy to win unless you are cheating
I like to personally play the total deposit amount I make into 15 equally split games
Thanks. I do the same things. My casino has several computer Blackjack games. I spread the funds throughout all of them. I recently started playing real dealers. These are great but the buy in minimum is a little steep for me.
Yeah some the buy ins for live dealer are definitely a little steep when your just depositing any amount under like $200
A part of me wonders if the Casinos when they scanned my ID knew im new and have complete control of all the cards and rigged it where I win huge to turn me into an addict how crazy this was.
I pull out $40, go to blackjack put it all in and double to $80.
I leave the casino a winner and come back and put it all on baccart and double it to $160.
I leave for the day.
Next day im itching for poker.
I turn it into $300 and go down to $51. Im like I have no way of getting back to $300 let me go to blackjack. I shove it all in and double.
I keep playing small and doing all in doubles and I get it up to $800!
I take a break and come back. I lose lose lose and an insane $150 split to $300 total beating. Im down to $300.
I take another 20 min break and im in a good mood again. I dont care too much about the money because everything is budgeted and I can afford losing it.
I pull out $300 cash turn it into chips and fire it all in at once blackjack.
I get a blackjack!!! Turns out the table had shitty blackjack payout but whatever.
I play some more and I shove my $600 in again and I get another blackjack!!!
I leave with $1250 after I gave some tips out.
I come back and play with $200 and I end up doubling up then losing it and I leave the casino with $1000 cash. All started with $40
Nah the casino didn’t do it. You became an addict on your own. The key is walking out when your up. Do not!! I repeat, DO NOT expect to have all trips go like this. You will have times that your bankroll just goes to 0 in minutes. That is when you walk out. No ATM! Also, that 1k is not ammunition for more casino visits. That is the frame of mind that lets the casino win.
I agree
Never tip the dealers. They aren’t the reason you made the money. YOU won the money, don’t give any of it back to the casino.
I agree lol I thought about that its their job, but I just like to be nice and tip it wasnt out of obligation. I believe the universe brings it back to you when you give.
I made a 1000 twice on casino extreme cashed out after being verified
I love a good run good story. Congratulations
Yeah love seeing something different.
What casino do you play at?
I can’t be the only one that doesn’t know how, can I?
I don't know how to play either Lol, I've been having a lot of luck with the Roulette table.
Oh, the joys of already being 21.
blackjack your cards have to add up to 21 or under and whoever has 21 or closest to 21 wins, if you go over 21 you lose.
Is it a smart move to sometimes not go by basic strategy? Mostly basic strategy but (for example) maybe sometimes you stand on a 14 when the dealer shows a face card or things like that.
Edit: I’m dumb 😂
You hit every time the dealer has a face card unless you have a 17 or higher. 15 or 16 you can surrender.
To answer your question. It all depends on the count.
Wouldn’t it be the same odds (or near close) for the dealer to have a 6 and than draw a bust card as me hitting said 14 and drawing a 7? I am still somewhat in the beginning stages of learning all things blackjack, so don’t berate me if this sounds dumb LOL!
Some hands are naturally disadvantaged bad already where you’re more likely to lose either way, but following basic strategy helps give you the best mathematical odds to win, so I would always follow it unless you’re counting
In 6D H17 RSA NS DA2, at the beginning of the shoe, the edge would be -0.540168 standing and -0.463098 hitting. Hitting is simply the mathematically optimal play (according to Monte Carlo sims). Some counters will index low -EV loss plays that look wrong however, to help with cover. But I don’t think it’s worth it, as the spread compared to count will almost always be the giveaway, not BS mistakes.
To be blunt: yes that's dum.
Basic strategy is computed by computers over millions of simulation and multiple people fact checked. You're feeling and understanding of probability is based on human emotion and error and casinos are banking on you playing by heart and impression.
That being said if you are a card counter there are things that are called deviations which is specific circumstances under which you should donate different then basic strategies but that's a complex topic.
Definitely learn perfect basic strategy. It’s probably not worth the bother, but there are 4 to 5 hands that are 50:50 almost, such that you could apply very limited card counting using the cards on the table that round. Those borderline hands are: hitting or standing on 16 v T, and 12 v 4, doubling down or hitting A,2 v 5 and A,4 v 4. Another is hitting/doubling 11 v A if the dealer hits soft 17 (H17). If you see more high cards on the table, hit rather than standing or doubling. If you see a lot of low cards, do the opposite. This will be an advantage over basic strategy, but an advantage probably measured in pennies.
Dealer having a face card is captured by basic strategy. It's the same as a 10.
I don’t know what you mean
In your question, you said maybe you need to make an exception when the dealer has a face card. I'm telling you that there is a specific row and column for that situation in the basic strategy chart already.
This is where deviations come in
That said, say you have a TC of 5+ and you’ve got a 16 against dealer’s 10. You’re most likely going to bust but I still hit since I’m assuming the dealer has a 20 and a 16 won’t beat it
Not unless you have other information, such as the count. Otherwise if you deviate from basic strategy, you'll lose more. By definition, basic strategy is the optimal play, always.
