How to Remove Glitter Makeup

TL;DR

  • Use tape or micellar water for initial removal
  • Follow with oil-based cleansers for thorough cleaning

Tape Method

One of the most effective methods for removing glitter makeup is using tape. Scotch tape or medical tape can be gently pressed onto the skin to lift off glitter particles [2:1][3:1]. It's recommended to weaken the adhesive by placing the tape on the back of your hand first, especially when using it near sensitive areas like the eyes [2:7][5:5]. This method helps prevent irritation and is favored by many for its efficiency in removing stubborn glitter.

Micellar Water and Cotton Pads

Micellar water is another popular choice for removing glitter makeup. Soaking a cotton pad with micellar water and pressing it against the eyelid for a few seconds before gently wiping away can effectively remove most glitter [2:2][5:1]. This method is gentle on the skin and can be followed by using tape to pick up any remaining glitter particles.

Oil-Based Cleansers

Using an oil-based cleanser is highly recommended for removing glitter makeup. Cleansing oils or balms can break down makeup and help lift glitter from the skin [2:3][4:2]. Double cleansing—first with an oil-based cleanser followed by a gentler cleanser—ensures all makeup residue is removed [4:2]. Some users even suggest using household oils like olive oil in a pinch [3:6].

Additional Tips

To minimize fallout during application, using a glitter glue primer can help keep glitter in place [4:1]. When removing makeup, focus on the eye area first before cleansing the rest of the face to contain glitter spread [1:3]. For those who prefer wipes, using different sections of the wipe for each swipe can prevent spreading glitter [5:3].

By combining these methods, you can effectively remove glitter makeup without leaving traces behind, ensuring a clean and comfortable experience.

ORIGINAL POST

So i just bought the half magic eyeshadow in the blushing lizard (ig got me!) i tried it out when i got home and then took a shower, thinking it would wash off in the shower…it didn’t and i ended up with glitter all over my face, it took me like 5 washes to get it off id like to avoid this in the future! Im not a big makeup person, so my apologies if this is a simple question, but whats the best way to take off super pigmented glittery eyeshadow without getting glitter everywhere?? I usually just use those reusable makeup removal sponge rounds for my mascara and they work great, sadly they didn’t work so great for the glitter.

Glitter is not just for an evening, glitter is for life!✨✨

Honestly using a good primer and then removing your eye makeup first with a decent remover will help the fall out but ultimately you will sparkle for a long time after using heavy glitter so just embrace it.

My ex always gave me "that look" when he saw me pull out the glitters because he knew he would be finding it on him for the next month too!

I wear a lot of glitter on my eyes, and I found the best way to contain the glitter from going everywhere is to always remove your eye makeup before washing your whole face. I use micellar water on a cotton round to swipe the glitter off my eyelids, and then I wash my entire face after.

Tape! I get the 3m medical tape and use that. A roll lasts me a few months. If you get the 3 inch you can tear it in half and use one half for each eye. I wear glitter everyday and it helps not wash microplastics down the drain. I will also say Half Magic has more issues with fallout than other brands I use.

Glitter is tricky. It sticks so well, even with makeup remover. Tbh I don’t think there’s a guaranteed way to take it off without it still sticking around for a few days.

I’d just be sure you’re using a good makeup cleanser to take off your makeup (a balm, oil, jelly or foaming cleanser or whatever) and not like a makeup wipe

To get glitter off my lids, I usually squirt some micellar water into a cotton round and press it to my eyelid for about 5 seconds then gently wipe away. I usually flip and fold the cotton round until the glitter is all gone off one eye, then use a new cotton round for the other eye.

Tape. Scoth tape orthe clear kind for wraping gifts. It is a drag queen trick. Apply the tape and gently peel the glitter off. Works every time. Then follow up with your double cleanse to remove all the makeup

Thank you, that sounds so much easier. I was endlessly scrubbing and it kind of just made the whole thing worse.

Another tip in case the tape is too sticky/ tugs too much on (possibly already sensitive) eyes; place the tape on the back of your hand so it weakens the glue just a little bit.

I have lost an eyelash (or two) using fresh tape lol

Guys there was a tragic accident involving discount sparkle eyeshadow and a young child wanting to help me be pretty. I got coated with bright blue and bright pink up to me eyebrows and dark purple below my eyes. It is really, really glittery. I have washed my face multiple times but I can't get everything off, especially the glitter. I look like a sparkle goth and I have a presentation in two hours. Any tips help!

It's weird, but used dryer sheets pick up a lot of excess glitter on the skin- i think it's their porous texture. I used to used them all the time in my younger days to clean up fallout after doing my super sparkly makeup.

Tape. Gently tap the sticky surface a few times with your fingers so it doesn’t rip your face hairs or skin off, and then tap the glitter that’s on your face. Should come off. Make sure you’ve gotten most of the oil from previous attempts off, and works better on completely dry skin

Any advice for how to remove eyeshadow with chunky glitters without getting glitter in my eyes or waterline? I usually use coconut oil, and a washcloth with warm water to remove my eye makeup

When I have a ton of glitter on my lids and feel like it’s just gonna smear all over my face I’ll break out the scotch tape and get off the majority of it before going in with makeup wipes and a makeup removing balm

Edit : I’d assume it would work for that as well, or at least help a bit!

I've never used tape before, but I've heard that people tap the tape onto the back of their hand first (to remove some of the stickiness) before using it near the eye since the skin is thinner/more sensitive on the face!

You could try makeup removing wipes. Just use a different part of it with every swipe if makeup you take off.

you can try using an oil based makeup remover like the clinique purple one and soaking it onto a neutrogena makeup wipe and really focussing the wipe on your eyelid area gently massaging not wiping all over your face before you take off the rest of the makeup!

Tape 100% try and find a crafting/washi tape which is less harsh. Any other form of wiping can create tiny cuts on your eyelids.

Generally, I soak a cotton pad with micellar water (I'm currently using the blue Garnier one, but my all time favorite is the Sephora Collection one), hold it to my eye for 5-10 seconds and then gently swipe the glitter away. The ColourPop glitters come off pretty easily, so don't feel the need to rub really hard. I usually get about 90% of the glitter off with the micellar water and then go in with some washi tape to pick up the remaining glitter. I echo putting the tape on the back of your hand first so the adhesive is weakened a bit and using some sort of paper tape like washi or masking, I actually gave myself a paper cut with Scotch tape before... lol I prefer this method to using some sort of face cleanser because you can make sure that the vast majority of the glitter is going in the trash and not down the drain, and I have not experienced any irritation on my eyes.

Eye makeup remover for waterproof makeup. I put a lot of it on a cotton pad, hold it for 20-30 seconds, then lightly wipe it away. Then a double cleanse (over the eyelids too). At least that’s how I do it, and it works for me

I usually use tape to remove glitter before cleansing. I place the tape over my lid (after putting it on the back of my hand to make sure it’s not too sticky and pulling my skin) and tap a few times. This takes off most of the glitter particles so when I go in after with remover/cleanser it’s easier to get off.

Tape. Tape. Tape.

TAPE!!!

Use some tape to gently remove the glitter, do NOT scrub with wipes or makeup remover. The adhesive from regular tape will pull up the glitter without irritating your skin.

Scrubbing glitter off of your skin can result in microabbrassions that can cause irritation, pain, and hypersensitivity. This also runs the risk of accidentally rubbing the glitter into your eyes. Use good old tape and it'll be fast and painless. Then use a makeup removing balm to remove anything else!

If you spent 30 minutes on a look and only when you were done did you notice that the glitter you used had fallen down below your eyes would you scrap it or just pretend it isn’t there? I’m pissed.

If you do have foundation on already it’s gonna be a lot harder. Sometimes I have luck using a spoolie to gently brush off the few glitter particles that fall off my eyes.

How to Remove Super Fine Glitter from Eyeliner?

Posted by Worried-Profession-8 · in r/Makeup · 3 years ago

Hello, I recently purchased some Chanel eyeliners that have super fine glitter, and while they make my eyes and whole appearance look gorgeous and I love them, it's very difficult to remove the glitter completely. I wear contacts and have OCD and get really panicky at the thought of glitter in my eyes or on my contacts - I don't know if the microglitter is 'safe enough' or whatever - and my usual cleanser for removing glitter like highlighters isn't working well for this. So is there a good way to remove super fine glitter? And is super fine glitter getting into eyes really damaging?

things like eyeliners usually have ingredients that go through FDA approval otherwise they'd have a BIG disclaimer (some eyeshadows) that they aren't meant to be used around the eyes.

Typically it means they are safe, and can be flushed out with water/eye wash if the do get into your eyes. As someone who wears contacts as well as long as you wash them thoroughly with contact disinfecting solution you shouldn't have a problem.

moisturizing with cold cream before using micellar water or using a cleansing balm + cleansing oil may help loosen the stuck glitter. If there is stuff crusted to the water line, using a little baby shampoo helps to clear out the oil glands!

Before going out tonight I dropped my blush on the floor. Shattered pinkness everywhere

I left for dinner and figured I'd deal with it when I got home

Got home. Stared at it. Wiped up what I could with water, but it still left quite a bit on the tile and i felt like i was just rubbing it in or something

looked at my skin care. Picked up a cleansing oil, squirted it on the Swedish dishcloth I was using to clean the floor and voila. Pink sparkles gone. I was left with sparkly clean floors

Cleansing oil removes makeup, y'all. Even from floors.

I mean. Basic chemistry. Use an oil based solvent to dissolve oil based solubles. This works across the bored btw. Sap in your hair? Use oil or peanut butter to break it down. But something like alcohol would be better to break down ink or alcohol based dyes.

Oil based cleansers have emulsifyers that will allow the oils in the cleanser to create micells, particles with both a water tail and an oil tail. The oil tail sticks to the oil in the makeup and the water tail sticks to the rinse water to carry the grime away.

Can I try it on a cement wall? I have makeup that will not come off 😂

2 upvotes on reddit
EccentricSoaper · 5 months ago

Well. Chemically, it still would work. It may be tougher because of how porous cement is. But an oil cleanser would be much more efficient for emulsifying the oil based makeup.

how to remove glitter makeup

Key Considerations for Removing Glitter Makeup:

  1. Use an Oil-Based Makeup Remover: Glitter can be stubborn, so an oil-based remover is effective in breaking down the adhesive and glitter particles. Look for products labeled as "waterproof" or "long-wear."

  2. Micellar Water: If you prefer a gentler option, micellar water can also work well. Choose one that is specifically formulated for removing makeup.

  3. Cotton Pads or Balls: Use soft cotton pads or balls to apply the remover. This helps to gently lift the glitter without excessive rubbing.

  4. Patience is Key: Allow the remover to sit on the glitter for a few seconds before wiping it away. This helps to dissolve the makeup more effectively.

  5. Follow Up with a Cleanser: After removing the glitter, wash your face with a gentle cleanser to ensure all residue is gone and to prevent irritation.

  6. Avoid Rubbing: Be gentle around the eye area to avoid irritation. Rubbing can lead to redness or damage to the delicate skin.

Recommendation: For a reliable oil-based makeup remover, consider using products like Bifesta Cleansing Lotion or Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover.
